Argument with DH. Is your draining board to the left or right of the sink?

Discussing layout of new kitchen.

DH says the space would work better if the draining board was on the left of the sink. I say the draining board is always on the right of the sink and I would feel weird washing up if it was on the left.

Who's right?

In both of my parents homes it's on the right and in my house it's on the left. Actually doesn't bother me which way round it goes!

allwornout0 · 14/06/2017 08:59

Mine is on the right, I wanted it that way so that I would have a bigger area of work surface and it works well.
The prat of a kitchen fitter I had the misfortune to have kept trying to argue that as I am right handed it should be on the left, I had to really make a point on insisting that if I wanted it on the right than that is where it should be. I just thought as i'm paying it goes where ever I damn well want.

Our house - left
Friend's house in the same street - right
House I grew up in - right
Both sisters' houses - right
Parent's house - right
In-laws house - left
Our new utility room - both sides

I grew up abroad and we had a double sink with a drainer on each side. When I first came to England I was baffled by having only one drainer. I've only ever had them on my left in UK, but dad DSis and PiLs all have theirs on the right.

I think to get it right from a blank sheet it's important to think about the flows of things around the kitchen from preparation to cooking to clearing away. Think about the obvious place to pile dirty pans, utensils and dishes up, and where the clean stuff sits afterwards, and set the sink/drainer accordingly.

I am amazed this is something people have such strong opinions on Grin Ours is on the right, old house was on the left, work is on the right, my parents is on the left......... in other words there is no right or wrong, do what ever works for you and the kitchen Smile

wowfudge · 14/06/2017 10:09

I've had both - I'm left handed but have always just gone with whatever worked best with the kitchen layout and sink positioning.

Gizlotsmum · 14/06/2017 10:10

Ours is on the left, parents and in laws are on the right.

Gizlotsmum · 14/06/2017 10:11

Nope switch that ( got my left and rights muddled, ours is on right parents and inlaws on left )

Bananamama1213 · 14/06/2017 10:13

Right!

BeautyQueenFromMars · 14/06/2017 10:14

4 houses in my family, 3 have drainer on the right, 1 has it on the left.

BeautyQueenFromMars · 14/06/2017 10:15

Ooh there are 2 at work, 1 is on the left, the other is on the right. Equal opportunities in action 😉😁

Changebagsandgladrags · 14/06/2017 12:23

In our previous house the draining board was on the left. In this house it's on the right. I don't really notice an issue with either...

Monkeybunkey · 14/06/2017 12:24

I have one on both sides, however the draining rack is on the right. The left hand side is stuff waiting to be washed up (or put in the dishwasher).

DeliciouslyHella · 14/06/2017 12:27

Ours is left, as it has been in every place we've lived in.

My parents have two sinks - one left and one right.

lorelairoryemily · 14/06/2017 12:47

Mine is on the right, my sister's is on the left. My mother's is on the left too, I couldn't use theirs, it would drive me crazy

fishfingerSarnies · 14/06/2017 12:48

Right

steppemum · 14/06/2017 12:51

mine's on right
parent's is on left
brother's s on right
other brother on right
old one now in my garage is on right
friend I had coffee with today on left
best friend on left
friend round corner on right

actually doesn't bother me!

StayGoldPonyBoy · 14/06/2017 13:03

Left for us, and my parents, in-laws and grandparents! I can't imagine it on the right Grin

metalmum15 · 14/06/2017 13:12

We've got 2 sinks, one is on the left, the other on the right. But I never wash up because I have a dishwasher Grin

MissMurielStacy · 14/06/2017 13:19

Mine are both on the left (kitchen and utility), in my parent's house it is on the right.

Idratherhaveacupoftea · 14/06/2017 13:26

Left.

MissWilmottsGhost · 14/06/2017 13:27

Mine is on the left.

Surely it depends on the kitchen layout, not whether you're left or right handed? If mine was on the right the sink would be in the corner, and that would be weird.

NotCitrus · 14/06/2017 13:31

Left, as is the dishwasher. we're both right-handed but designed it that way, mostly as it's the only place to put it.

Processing in a direction doesn't really happen as stuff is piled in and all round the sink and on the peninsula to the left, mostly ends up in the dishwasher.

Huffletuff · 14/06/2017 13:34

Left and has been in every other house I've owned.
