Private school teacher with tattoos?

bubblenance · 03/03/2026 18:29

What is your opinion? If your child attends a private school and you noticed their teacher had tattoos up arms etc….

Would It bother you? Non offensive tattoos.

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

Would not bother me personally. I reckon about a third of my professional work colleagues have tattoos although they are for the most part not on show. Its not such a big deal these days unless it is some spiders web tattoo on their face or some football hooligan emblem. If they are an otherwise great teacher I could not care less.

The op said 'up their arms' which rather suggested visible and numerous.

It would be quite extreme for people to object to staff having a tattoo per se. How would they know?!

Plus it is so very common these days you'd run out of staff pretty quickly!

NeverDropYourMooncup · 03/03/2026 19:07

If they're swastikas and women/mermaids with unfeasibly large breasts, then it's a problem.

Otherwise, even the crappy watercolour ones that go blotchy, they're fine.

ChirpyAmberLion · 03/03/2026 19:08

I’m 51 a Corporate professional and I have two tattoos!

They are both tattoos taken from two photos of my late beloved dog, are incredibly personal to me, and whilst not for ‘show’ they are on each inner forearm. I’m proud of them, I love them, and they are ‘something’ that I carry everywhere as a reminder.

if someone took offence it’s entirely up to them, but it most certainly (in my humble opinion) does NOT impede me from carrying out my professional duties in a Corporate setting. If someone were to complain or infer that I shouldn’t be in the role I’m in, I’d be, well, more than flabbergasted.

BitterTits · 03/03/2026 19:08

So funny. Is it acceptable for the state school plebs?

Jlom · 03/03/2026 19:08

StarlightRobot · 03/03/2026 18:41

Yes, it would bother me. Teachers are role models and I wouldn’t want my child permanently marking their body, so I wouldn’t want to see it on their teacher either.

If this were the case all my school friends would be walking around in floral blouses and pleated skirts, sporting princess Diana haircuts. Since when did children want to look like their teachers?

emmetgirl · 03/03/2026 19:08

Of course not. Why would it?

Flowersandfauna · 03/03/2026 19:08

It would bother me!
Last we we attended hospital and the nurse was covered in tattoos, was gross 😔

What's gross about it?

WinterFrogs · 03/03/2026 19:10

IdaGlossop · 03/03/2026 19:00

I was, but it's telling that some people think I was bring serious ie we live cheek by jowl with people who do have this attitude.

True that

Lamelie · 03/03/2026 19:14

Tattoos don’t bother me. However, I once did a ‘through the gate’, accompanying a prisoner on release, and she was outraged that the governor had tattoos. Made me think about how appearances, status and respect are interlinked and very personal.

LadyGaGasPokerFace · 03/03/2026 19:14

I work in private. Some staff have tattoos. One head of science had tattoos. She left our school to teach elsewhere. Piercings too. She was a cracking teacher. Kids loved her, she was about 5’1” and a fiery teacher if crossed.

LamonicBibber1 · 03/03/2026 19:16

@IdaGlossop has me laughing out loud on this thread, thank you, that prisons being full comment is gold 😂

It's ok not to personally like tattoos, but to transmogrify the wearer of said tattoos into some sort of deviant/scruff/less-than, is truly a display of pointlessly judgemental unintelligence. You cannot, after all, judge a book by it's cover.

And... Why are you paying thousands to this school, if you don't trust their judgement around hiring staff..

Loving this response😂
We need to keep the hoi poloi at arms length, ghastly scum class corrupting us decent people with their tattoos and our university education with firsts.

Thindog · 03/03/2026 19:17

The obvious answer is to give the teacher some thick make up and ask them to slap it over the tattoos when they teach your child.

StarlightRobot · 03/03/2026 19:17

@Ihaveneedofwaternear

For me it is about the teacher being a role model and as mentioned in my previous post I wouldn’t want my child one day to emulate that look. We are talking about tattoos that would be visible so I suppose we are talking about forearms and hands, that type of placement. I do work in a conservative profession (city) and can’t think of a single instance where I have seen a tattoo on professional team members, so I probably do carry some bias. In my wider family, big visible tattoos are not really common, and so it is less normal for me. I also wouldn’t want my child to get a tattoo they regret one day (my brother spent a lot on getting his back tattoo lasered), and maybe I wouldn’t want my child to be judged for it as they would be in certain circles (yes I totally get that irony). Also, and this is just completely personal, I am not crazy about tattoos generally for my own child. And before I get flamed, of course I have zero control over that and of course my child can do whatever they want as an adult and their body is their own.

I would not think any less of the teacher or their ability to teach.

My feelings on this probably are not 100 per cent rational, and I completely understand that I will be out of step with the majority. I also very much doubt I am alone on this.

IdaGlossop · 03/03/2026 19:19

StarlightRobot · 03/03/2026 18:55

@IdaGlossop

That is an interesting question. I wouldn’t have a view about a teacher’s religion or diet which I think are private matters anyway. I suppose visible tattoos are different as something on display. The question was whether it would bother me but I certainly would keep that opinion to myself. I know tattoos are completely ubiquitous these days.

I'm not keen on tattoos myself, and am relieved my DD doesn't want any, but dislike them as much for gardeners, plumbers and mortgage brokers as I do for teachers.

Newgirls · 03/03/2026 19:19

I think some parents might mind - some are buying into the image of a place - posh lawns, old buildings etc. Prob ok on a cool music teacher less so on the headteacher?!

I guess she smelt of b.o if she was gross, or was she doing a difficult job and showing some ink?
Some people really need to get a life on this thread.

Anyusernamewilldo8963 · 03/03/2026 19:21

Ooooh I'd be clutching me pearls! Clearly they are a never do well that might corrupt my precious DC 🙄 please tell me I've fallen for the trap of a rage bait post and you don't seriously have an issue with a teacher for choosing to get ink that you've admitted is completely non offensive.....

LamonicBibber1 · 03/03/2026 19:23

@StarlightRobot What is one small and irrelevant facet of yourself that we can use to beat you with? Do you have droopy hair like a spaniel? Do you wear ugly block heels? Or cheap fabric? Do you have a large nose or pierced ears? Are you a Tory? Do you eat meat?

Do you see what I'm getting at. You're entitled to your opinion, but none of those superfluous things are a reason to write you off as a whole. And I think (barring offensive ones) it should be the same for tattooed people. Peace, and love 🌷

WednesdaysChild73 · 03/03/2026 19:24

Tattoos are as common as ear piercings now, many professionals have tattoos.

StarlightRobot · 03/03/2026 19:25

@LamonicBibber1

there are too many flaws to count! I do hear you! I am being completely honest about my bias and to be honest it’s refreshing to be challenged on it.

WednesdaysChild73 · 03/03/2026 19:25

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 03/03/2026 18:32

Why does it make a difference that they’re a private school teacher?

Valid point 👍🏻
