Shall I inform the school and other parents?
The person spent 4 years in jail and I don’t feel comfortable that my child Is in one classroom as the convict’s son.
I know school probably just cares about their money but isn’t it a bad look for them to have a convict within their community?

I have taught many lovely children who had criminal parents or dirty and unkempt parents, alcoholic or drug addicted parents, rude and annoying parents or just plain lazy uninterested parents. No child is responsible for their parent’s lifestyle or behaviour.
When a new poster appears with a username consisting of an adjective, colour/jewel and an animal name. I am a bit suspicious. I have read that this is what MN recommends to new users as a way to formulate a username. To me it lacks imagination. This together with the two brief replies from the OP leads me to completely disregard their views on the parentage of the child involved.

Yes, but this is a private school.

RosyPumpkins · 25/01/2026 16:34

Coming back to this thread as I went to private school and have suddenly realised my Dad might be a criminal without my having noticed! I can hardly stand the excitement. A phone call home is needed I think.

RampantIvy · 25/01/2026 17:14

I'm surprised this thread is still up. OP hasn't returned.

I know a man who owns a restaurant and at certain times of the year he opens very early for groups of people who have pre booked at 9am. He will serve alcohol from the time he opens as well as serving food and will only take cash payments. This is at the very least tax evasion but as the owner has never been charged or convicted he has no criminal record. Does this mean as he appears squeaky clean it is okay for his children to go to private school even though he is just as guilty as the parent that you know who was convicted. The man I know will not be the only person who owns a restaurant who sometimes takes cash under the table either. Children are innocent and should not be held accountable for the actions of their parents. This child deserves to grow up without the fear of being ostracised for something they had no part in. Say nothing and do nothing OP.

CriminalSortingHat · 26/01/2026 01:51

As long as the sorting hat places this boy in Slytherin, all will be well.

The independent school where I used to work had a clause in the parent school contract which said something like the fees couldn’t be paid from “ the proceeds of the profits of crime.”

Check whatever you signed when your child first joined.

HatKat · 26/01/2026 03:31

So what? Keep your nose out and NO you dont need to inform anybody. It is not the childs fault and dont you think the family would've had enough shame at the time of the conviction without you adding to it, when no doubt the parent is trying to move forward with their life. I can tell what type of person you are just from this one post you have created!

This is so weird.

Nothing can be legally paid for with the “proceeds of crime”.

Caughtletren · 26/01/2026 06:18

My children go to a private school and I can guarantee that if the OP posted on class chat this information…. The response would be WTAF…. STFU!!! No one would be remotely exercised by the information but horrified by the twatty parent ( @KindOpalBear ) telling us

I know, the fact they went to the trouble of making a sign makes it sound like they have had more than one person trying though!

Like saying “unfortunately we cannot accept drugs as payment in kind”, or “please do not ask for fees to be waived in exchange for the release of the headmaster’s children, as refusal often offends”.

Amonthinthecountry · 26/01/2026 08:41

This cannot be for real. Imagine working in the school office when this call comes in!

I don’t believe it was a contract condition!

40andnotsofabulous · 26/01/2026 09:23

@KindOpalBear, I really do hope you are joking?!

Why would you tell other parents? Why tell the school? What business is it of yours, and why should it matter? Regardless of your personal views on the parents, the (innocent) child is the person who is likely to suffer if you follow through with your absurd suggestion. I really struggle to understand why you would be cruel to an innocent child. Leave well alone.

Legally, no.

I’m going back 20 years here. I didn’t write this in the first place because I’m vague on detail, but I think parents had to be able to show a legitimate source for the income with which they paid the fees.

Don't be silly, it doesn't mean that at all. It's just the typical kind of legal clause lawyers put in to make sure that you won't be bound to a contract under ridiculous circumstances due to some legal loophole/unscrupulous human rights lawyers.

It's exactly the same reason as most countries ask 'Are you a member of a terrorist organisation' on your visa application. It's not because they expect anyone to reply 'yes'. It's because if they find out you are, then they can expel you from the country really easily for lying on your visa application. That's much easier than having to prove that membership of that particular terrorist organisation is sufficient to justify expulsion... especially if they can dig up someone else in the country who is also a member of that terrorist organisation, but hasn't been expelled because they are a citizen, or single parent of a citizen.. and so clearly you're actually illegally discriminating on race because you only get rid of white members of that terrorist organisation whilst allowing black ones to stay... etc

It's exactly the same.

HairyToity · 27/01/2026 07:42

Donald Trump is as dodgy as they come and all his kids went to private schools... Afraid private school doesn't in any way guarantee your kid won't be with criminal's children. I'd keep out of it.

MidWayThruJanuary · 27/01/2026 09:53

Beatrice and Eugenie of York attended private schools....
