Shall I inform the school and other parents?
The person spent 4 years in jail and I don’t feel comfortable that my child Is in one classroom as the convict’s son.
I know school probably just cares about their money but isn’t it a bad look for them to have a convict within their community?

My add to your post is this, most people who have enough money to send their child to a private school have usually committed a criminal offence, even if it’s just a tax dodge !
yes its a sweeping generalisation,
however because someone is wealthy and educated doesn’t mean they are beyond the law. Also this person has served there sentence.

At my son’s private school the father of one of my son’s classmates was sent down for 25 years for drugs. Turns out he was the lynchpin of a drugs running gang. There was an order made to seize his assets but they allowed school fees to be paid for his final year. Even before his conviction it was clear they were dodgy so not a massive surprise. He was actually very pleasant. His wife was like a fish wife and I used to call her the gangster’s moll in my head as she tottered in to the playground in her hooker heels with every designer brand emblazoned across every item of clothing and accessory. The very caricature of a gangster’s moll whilst tge old money stood around in shabby jackets and wellies. I would still invite her child to parties but she generally never responded and often didn’t turn up which she did with everyone so people were more pissed off at that than where they got their money from.

A friend who worked at another private school said they knew all the gangster children because their parents would always pay the fees in cash.

Another gangster lived in a council house on a very rough estate so it was very incongruous to see his children in their straw boaters being driven to their private school

To be honest, even though their money was obtained through crime, I thought at least they were trying to give their children a better life through education.

The gangster on the council estate may not have been a gangster at all . Maybe they inherited their money and decided to invest it in their children’s education.Or maybe their Grandparents are footing the bill ? Maybe the kids were super smart and won bursary’s ? Who knows ! It’s human nature to want better for your kids whatever your background. These parents have understood the value of a good education and contacts so good for them .

Oh you peculiar person @1Messycoo

NeverHadHaveHas · 25/01/2026 09:41

There is a parent at our private school who has been to jail relatively recently and it was well publicised in local press. School knows, parents know and no one gives a fuck because we are generally nice people who don’t judge kids for the actions of their parents.
Have you really nothing better to think about at 3am?

allthingsinmoderation · 25/01/2026 09:42

Seems unreasonable to punish a child for the alleged crimes of the children.
Are you saying if a parent commits a crime their children should not be educated? I think the opposite.

RestartingForNY · 25/01/2026 09:42

Don't be insane - convicts children still get to go to school.

People like this (criminals) shouldn’t be allowed In private schools.

The child is not a criminal.
Criminals and former-criminals exist in all parts of society OP.

THisbackwithavengeance · 25/01/2026 09:44

Ok then…

Bottomofthedeepbluesea · 25/01/2026 09:45

Haha, this is a funny one. I’d love to see what Percentage of private school funding can be tracked back to criminality.

OMG!!!!

Strumpetpumpet · 25/01/2026 09:52

I used to work in a private school (in the finance office)
We used to joke about the number of parents who paid their fees in cash, many likely from ill gotten gains
The family in question will be far from the only parents engaged in criminal activity.

Funnywonder · 25/01/2026 09:53

Another idiotic rage bait post. Seriously OP, get a fucking life.

Why not? Is there anything in the terms and conditions saying that a parent with a previous conviction who has served their time cannot have a child in private education? Or is it just your own prejudice and nosiness that makes you think this is any of your business?

Hmm, yes - NHS doctors, teachers, pharma researchers and engineers on PAYE taxation have soooo much opportunity for tax fraud.

Better to consider what proportion of benefit claimants (51% of parents) are working on the side.

The UK's black economy, or shadow economy, is estimated around £150 billion (approx. 10% of GDP), and around 9% of adults are estimated to take part: with significant growth in cash-based sectors like trades, takeaways, and car washes.

Think how much extra money there would be for the NHS and schools if they actually declared the income and paid tax.

You do realise that a large number of children at Eton, Harrow,Westminster will come from families where the money for their fabulous lifestyle has been obtained in the most appalling ways. The way things are going they'll end up as the only ones who can afford the fees
We had a local dominatrix ( Miss Whiplash) who wanted to make a very large donation to the small C of E state primary I taught in.It would have made a huge difference to what we could achieve but the governors felt obliged to say no. I dare say a private school would have found a way to 'clean it up a bit' before it appeared in the accounts It's all about the money.

strawberrybubblegum · 25/01/2026 09:57

If you pay a tradesman cash, you're part of the problem.

But they should be allowed in state schools with us poorer folk?!
I actually think it sounds like this is a perfect fit!

ApolloandDaphne · 25/01/2026 10:01

I know someone who has spent time in prison for fraud. Their child (born after they were released) has done their whole schooling at a private school. This has been paid for with funds from genuine hard work by the family and not fraud. Do you think this child should have been denied a private education because one of their parents committed a crime way before they were born and managed to turn their life around?

UncannyFanny · 25/01/2026 09:58

Has he been found to have avoided tax? Do tell.

Angela Rayner on the other hand underpaid £40k of stamp duty that was due....

sprigatito · 25/01/2026 10:03

Oh dear. I suspect you are labouring under the misapprehension that paying for education guarantees you a perfect world in which your child is insulated against associating with people you consider inferior. Unfortunately, as you’ve discovered, even wealthy people can be scummy.

No, you shouldn’t launch a vindictive smear campaign against another child’s family. There isn’t a school in the world that will allow you to filter your child’s classmates based on their parents’ characters, however much money you throw at it. Better you change your attitude now and teach your child to take people as they find them.

oncemoreuntothebeachdearfriends · 25/01/2026 10:03

Put your child in a state school where he can mix with the children of poor criminals rather than rich ones.

Quite right! Get them all into the state schools to be educated with the rest of the plebs!

YABU

what does it have to do with the child?

I’d steer my child away from a friendship with them if I could, but otherwise stay out of it. It’s nothing to do with you
