SATS 2016

We got our results today, still trying to decipher raw/scaled score. DD got EXS for everything, which is great, but it's very hard not knowing what she would have got on the old system!

So much pressure on the kids so young. I hate this.

I hate the targets and marks. Sigh.

toomanyeasterbunnies · 08/07/2016 22:36

I am delighted that my DD passed all three tests. She is on the SEN register and her school have provided amazing help to her. I am very proud that she past them all as she has worked really hard.

However, I disagree with testing children so young and all the pressure that the changes in the curriculum\SATS have put on teachers and pupils. If she did not pass them ( she got 100 on SPAG paper so could have gone either way) then she would have been devastated as to her it would have validated the feelings she has of being the "dumb".

KingscoteStaff · 09/07/2016 05:09

The tests that were externally marked (reading, SPAG and maths) were graded MET or NOT MET (can't remember the exact code).
Writing and Science are teacher assessed, and can be graded MET , NOT MET or GDS.

However, some schools will also be publishing their Teacher Assessment for Reading, SPAG and Maths in the children's reports, so they might award a GDS for these subjects based on the teacher's complete knowledge of the child's work.

At some point in the Autumn ( we think), an 'official' threshold for GDS will be set, in order to judge progress, but no one knows whether that will be 108+ or 115+ or whatever.

The '47% are failing' statistic is the children who have not met in one or more subjects. It therefore includes a child in my class who got 115 119 98 - she has a massive problem with maths, despite a huge amount of help from me and effort from her this year. However, she got a Level 1 in Maths back in Year 2, so she has still made progress. I will just have to wait until the Autumn to find out whether the progress is deemed 'good enough'.

mrz · 09/07/2016 06:29

"There is no threshold for ‘Greater Depth’. Indeed, for tested subjects, there is no ‘Greater Depth’ at all. The scaled score indicates how far above the expected standard a child is, so there is no need for a label. After all, where would the benefit be in saying that a child who scored 117 is high achieving but a child who scored 116 isn’t, when clearly they both are?
There will be an accountability measure that schools have to publish later that is linked to “high scores”, but this is likely to be a combined measure, for example, the proportion of pupils who achieved over 115 in all 3 tested subjects. Note, that I’ve just picked 115 out of thin air. We don’t know what will be counted as a high score, and for the purposes of reporting to parents and children, we don’t need to know"

Thank goodness for Google and this thread, trying to work out what the results mean is like knitting fog!

My year 6 DS did really well but we knew he would as he just 'gets it'. Consequently my year 5 DS is already bricking it as he really struggles. I had tears from him last night but we cuddled, talked and have a plan of attack which seems to have calmed him down Sad

PonderingProsecco · 09/07/2016 07:16

Sad Plan of attack talk worries me.
Not had my year 6 results yet for ds [next Thursday].
He has a legibility issue and may have bombed. Just a handwriting/ coordination thing which probably won't matter when he is older.
I hope secondary will not judge too much on SATs.
The high stakes talk here depresses me and hope not as important as all that....

iloveshortbread · 09/07/2016 07:30

Aibu to say the new SATs are doing exactly what I and many parents actually want: improving standards. At my dd's school it was teachers who were stressed and they were passing that down to the kids. The kids were fine and my dd who is no genius had no problem at all with them. To be honest, if your DC has just had to sit various tests for schools incl grammars and indies etc, it is pointless having SATs they would just walk through. I think there is too much trembling of bottom lips here. If you want better schools, you need harder and more rigorous tests but I agree that the results were poorly explained.

scrappydappydoo · 09/07/2016 07:35

My DD is current yr5 so she's got all this crap to come. Still trying to understand all of this...
Am I right in thinking that the info in the pictures redsky posted earlier will change for my DDs cohort? So a score of 21 in reading this year would mean that precious 100 standard but next year a score of 21 could be a 99 and therefore not a pass?? I am so confused!

Sofabitch · 09/07/2016 07:37

I got yr2 and yr 6 sats resukts yesterday both innthr same format. Raw scores and scaled scores. The yr6 teacher said anything over 110 and they'd be around the old level 5 over 115 and they are entreing old level 6 territory.

Listenint to the speech at the begining from the teacher about how not to be disappointed etc.. she said loads of really bright children did not meet expected standards.

Mov1ngOn · 09/07/2016 07:45

I don't think it's raising standards at all. Just the opposite in fact. It's teaching to a test a prescribed list of facts. It's not the same as a rich education and says nothing of a child's ability to think, write creatively etc. And has the side effect of pushing out anything not tested.
Very very different to the usual internal annual testing at private school of content covered.

The what tests are flawed so don't really test what they're designed to either. So bright children don't pass etc.

Also labelling children as "not meeting standards" throughout primary does not encourage and inspire to develop talents.

If only people with knowledge of education made the decisions...

PonderingProsecco · 09/07/2016 07:46

Those who believe in grammar school system etc going to love SATs and all testing I guess shortbread...
Drill, drill, drill....

AuldYow · 09/07/2016 08:23

Why does a plan of attack worry you PonderingProsecco, he was much calmer once we talked about it. Part of the plan was not to worry!

Oops sorry about double post!

PonderingProsecco · 09/07/2016 08:28

Not to worry sounds a good plan!

mrz · 09/07/2016 09:45

NUT posted about child/ren who passed 11+ but have "failed" SATs

ineedaholidaynow · 09/07/2016 10:13

A teacher friend has told me that with teacher assessments for Maths, Reading, Writing and Science only Writing can be graded GDS, there is no option to grade the others GDS.

Can someone tell me why the Government have come up with this? Does this mean for school reports going forward for children in Y5 and below, this will be the way subjects are graded? It seems very odd for DS who has consistently been graded as exceeded, or whatever the relevant term was, in Maths since YR to be graded as EXS in his final assessment for Primary School. It is slightly demoralising for him.

Banana99 · 09/07/2016 10:29

My daughter got GDS for reading

KingscoteStaff · 09/07/2016 10:29

Ineedaholiday, have a look at my post of 5.09 and mrz's of 6.29.

You may have to wait until the Autumn to see whether your DS's progress from Yr2 has been 'expected' or better than that. And progress is the most important thing to measure.

KingscoteStaff · 09/07/2016 10:41

Banana that must be a Teacher Assessment of her Reading, not the mark on her SATs.

nuttymango · 09/07/2016 10:58

We got the results for DD on her report, she didn't know what they were before I told her.
We're happy, she's one of the 53% and not doing any SATs preparation at home worked out OK.

soyvanillalatte · 09/07/2016 11:14

I almost feel conned.
We were told by the school that the SATS were purely to check the school's teaching strengths/weaknesses and that the results would possibly be used to stream kids when they get to secondary school. I didn't bother checking -after the whole 11 plus and high school entrance exams -and just ignored it all hoping it would all go away. No-one I knew did any work at home for these. I'm a bit surprised to hear people considered that.
Luckily he passed but I had NO idea kids would have to resit of they didn't reach the 100 (is this correct or have I got the wrong end of the stick again?)
This could have gone either way.

mrz · 09/07/2016 11:30

Children won't have to resit this year but resits are being introduced in 2017

soyvanillalatte · 09/07/2016 11:31

ah, thanks. Would love to see some info on how the sats results correlate with 11 plus results at some stage in the future
