Prepping for Pandemic... 14

OK folks, we have been prepping for a Pandemic for 13 threads now. And a Pandemic we now have.

I think we all know this has gone beyond prepping now. And most of us agree that the UK Government has not really stepped up to the mark. We have had shared advice here from our Italian residents and those in other countries who have taken much more stringent measures.

So this thread continues to be about us being prepared. But it is more than that. It is about support, sharing of information and advice. It is now a community. A community who acknowledged a long time ago that this was always 'Not Just The Flu'

I thank you one and all for being here. We have tough times ahead. But we are all still here. Please share, rant, whatever. The great thing about these threads is that they have always been supportive and non judgemental. I like to think it's a safe space for all of us who are concerned. And trying to do our best. For ourselves. For our loved ones. And for our community and beyond.

Good morning everyone.

I'm not sure if this symptom chart has been added to the thread but it's very useful.

Me again. Can anyone remember what the next stage of Boris's plan of action was please? At what point do we think we will move into the next phase? I bet that's the phase he shuts things. Although he thinks we are 4 weeks behind Italy. Not sure where he got that from

IndecentFeminist · 13/03/2020 07:35

Are there any stats showing the number of those infected in hospital etc? Like the Italian ones?

itsnotjustflu · 13/03/2020 07:36

Also would imagine today's figures will be next to nothing and the only thing we can expect from now on is fatalities. Although who is to say they will be honest about them

Legoandloldolls · 13/03/2020 07:39

Checking in. Sorry I cant keep up now. I was looking for surgical spirt online and you normally can get 3x250ml for £15. Now its £50 for 250ml!

If this is going to peak in May, how will the hand gels last until then? I think I might put soap in my car for the school run

AlohaMolly · 13/03/2020 07:45

Good morning all. I’m with the PP who says they honestly believe it’ll be closures by Friday, but it’ll be a long week.

The first case in north Wales was announced yesterday and it’s confirmed that they had no known contacts and haven’t travelled.

I (or 3 yo DS) haven’t seen my mum since Christmas. She’s 60 this year and every year I go away for two nights with DS for Mother’s Day and my mum comes for one of those nights. We are due to meet in Chester on Sunday 22nd and stay overnight... if Boris hasn’t locked us down by Friday, would you cancel?

For a PP asking about exercise - Cosmic Yoga is yoga on YouTube for kids. Pop Sugar do fun dancey cardio workouts in a few different styles of dance too, mostly for adults but I don’t why see children couldn’t join in.

@MotherofDragonite

Have you got chalk? My kids used to love that :)

@84TinsOfBeans 😰😰😰 DH and I get along well, but the close confines are causing bickering even for us. We're out of routine and it feels like holiday but the DC still have to work. It's weird.

Reminder to buy two/three times more dishwasher tablets than normal. More people, more meals, more dishes. I'm also washing more as we're changing sheets and towels more frequently due to illness.

Time for me to get the DC out of bed ready for another day of 'school'.

😷😷stay healthy 😷😷

Which reminds me - in the shop yesterday there were loads of people in masks. First time I've seen that. Protecting themselves or others??? We wore gloves and maintained our distance. 🤞

Morning y’all,
Another new day and this “I can’t believe what is happening around” feeling is not going away. Flutters and panic shrouds my clarity and thoughts often but I am trying my best to keep up on top of all this. Today I am planning to sort some gardening and also thinking of organising a little more.
For kids yoga I love the videos by Teresa Power which is easy for my dd to follow. Also I think for adults - doing pranayama/surya namaskar and all other lung health poses will help. Yoga journal has some of the poses listed here

www.yogajournal.com/poses/anatomy/lungs

@Tropicalsquirrel yes name changed. For tropical gardening, you can ask your questions to me.

@Pegase The schools here try to over react everything so their funding and jobs are safe. If there are more unauthorised absences there will be more inspections I guess. For the fines - it’s upto the school to decide - even though my dd is sick the lady on the other side said she will not authorise her absence so it’s more like they have these powers they can misuse it as and when like (no one can ask anything to them) so we risk losing our places . Also the lady said she will have a black mark in her attendance that will continue to raise eyebrows even until university - is that true?? The way the schools work here in the U.K. surprises me - Not impressed at all. To be honest I have lived in both -what everyone calls a third world country as well as in U.K. but what I feel is the life here has more struggles because of stupid rules creating problems that leads to much less happiness than a third world country has. These people are made to believe they are smart - go around and hunt deals every three months to keep their bills down anyone? They are kept busy sorting their own problems so they can’t even think beyond that.

Legoandloldolls · 13/03/2020 07:57

It the schools and work places stay open I think I need rethink my prepping strategies.

I just dont know what to do anymore? You think we will go down a certain route but were not

Readyme · 13/03/2020 08:03

@MotherOfDragonite Cosmic kids on Amazon is great for young kids each episode has it's own story line DC loves it.

This thread has lots of ideas www.mumsnet.com/Talk/preppers/3844885-Stocking-up-on-things-the-Dc-can-do-at-home

Sprayitall · 13/03/2020 08:04

The latest news being agency nurses will not be paid if they come into contact and self isolate in my town. How horrible is that? Also this shocks me (copy pasting)

“The whistleblower also criticised the isolation area used for suspected coronavirus patient in A&E.

"The isolation area is the Observation Unit which is being screened from the rest of the unit by a small plastic screen. This is a five bedded area divided into two smaller areas. It is not a negative pressure area and is easily accessed by one door on one end which leads onto the ambulance queuing area and at the other end it leads into the patients' kitchen," she said.”

MoreCoffeeNeeded · 13/03/2020 08:04

Morning. Son has a fever of 38. And a sore throat. He also has a blocked nose so I think it is just a cold. But PHE said stay home for seven days with a fever? I have called the school to ask what we should do in their eyes - they have immunocompromised children there but I do not want to get fined. Either way, much to his disgust, he is not going in today. DH says follow PHE advice, 7 days at home. Which I am inclined to follow tbh. It doesn't help that his friend has the same thing and is being "forced in" by her parents. We are in an area that has cases. In fact, the highest number in any county.

Sorry bit of a ramble there.

rhij86 · 13/03/2020 08:05

Morning all,

I'm off work today unexpectedly - if I stand up for too long or move too quickly I have dizzy spells. Hoping it's just a temporary pregnancy symptom and nothing more sinister. DS has still gone to my parents, so I'm going to use the time to do a lot of sorting, stock taking and cleaning that I've been putting off as I've been too tired in the evenings.

Will stay on this thread but going to keep the news off today, and listen to one of my favourite podcasts to distance myself a bit.

At my second job yesterday (lecturing) and the staff were saying they can't see them being open past the end of next week. They were busy prepping revision packs etc ready for exams (although this was before the absolute shitshow announcement yesterday, so they may have changed their views since then.

Sprayitall · 13/03/2020 08:07

@Legoandloldolls Same with me. This week I have managed to keep dd off but what can we do next week - Why can’t people have choices if they need to expose themselves or not. This take it in the chin approach is not right.

rhij86 · 13/03/2020 08:07

@MoreCoffeeNeeded I would keep DS home without question if it was me, and argue any fine they tried to impose (doubt they would) as you are following government and PHE guidelines. Hope he feels better soon.

AmelieTaylor · 13/03/2020 08:07

@FuckThisWind stay safe going back to work x. Have you worked out if you can tell them to shove their job? Maybe tell your 🐝 🐝 to get working!!

I’m in a spin - so many things to do & decisions to make. Urgh

I just want to go back to life before all of this. I wasn’t terribly well & my knees were (still are) bad and were causing me lots of problems, worries about my job etc..but that’s seeming like a cake walk now. I just want to wake up from this nightmare.

51with ‘underlying health issues’ - I’m really scared. And very scared for elderly family members & friends

ofwarren · 13/03/2020 08:12

Sir Patrick Vallance says at least 60% of the population needs to contract COVID-19 in order to develop "herd immunity" to prevent further transmission in the future

They have admitted on SKY news that this is their plan..

hankyspanky · 13/03/2020 08:14

Morning all you lovely people Brew

Can anyone tell me on which thread I asked the gardening question and had some really helpful answers. This has moved so fast, I can't fine it again!!

I'm not even going to comment on yesterdays shambolic shitshow.

Thank you all for being so lovely and helpful. I live alone and the support I've got from this group has been tremendous.

Stay safe and wash your hands Wink

Pebble21uk · 13/03/2020 08:16

I had a very disturbed night through worry. I feel like I have so little control ( both self and partner work in different schools and both have asthma). If schools would only shut I would feel so much better. I'm doing everything I can but I never realised we live in a dictatorship!
The sun is shining today. I want to spend some time in the garden... Sort out what veg to plant when and where ( I work part time)
My mental health is suffering now. I need to be allowed to have more control.

NatoPMT · 13/03/2020 08:17

Checking in - I love the opening post of the thread @FuckThisWind. Thank you

Needed a break after hearing about the tenants upstairs. I had a headache, sore neck & shoulders and a sore throat and felt dizzy

I requested a full timeline of events so I could work out if I’d put my elderly neighbours at risk. Actually their events made it sound very unlikely they’d contracted it off the confirmed case

Whether he has it anyway is less understood but they are getting tested so no uncertainty there

Think my symptoms are psychosomatic but still have a sore neck

Self isolating with daughter off school - she was escorted off the school grounds yesterday - yaaaas!!

@rhij86 I was feeling dizzy too, but not pregnant so might be stress for me - is that Possible for you?

LittleSwede · 13/03/2020 08:17

Morning all. Haven't posted for a while but have lurked a bit. So glad I started prepping for Brexit last year and then replenished the stock in February. Have a fair bit of things in but could do with more flour and milk powder.

So I started coughing yesterday (which I often do with even minor colds) so guess I'm self isolating. DD has been coughing for weeks now and is now on a trial with an inhaler after antibiotics didn't make a difference. She's been off since Tuesday and keeping her home today.

This morning Sir Patrick Valance confirmed my theory that the self isolating even for mild symptoms will actually cut down on people being out at work and school enormously. So in a way it will reduce social contact quite significantly, provided people actually follow the advice that it.
Theoretically loads of kids should be home today as so many have coughs and colds this time of year. I just worry that parents won't follow advice and send kids in to school anyway.

Legoandloldolls · 13/03/2020 08:21

Ugh. I'm all at sea now. I think my plan is see my mum NOW. Before this explodes. Make sure she has my hand gel. I found another one in my cardi pocket. Good job I normally impulse buy them often as they was a change bag staple.

I feel lost really. I think I need to have a normal day and check my finances as my next priority. I will check in and out today.

Feels like we have gone from being ready to act, too keep calm and carry on. I cant shake the fear I will have no mum in 2021 😭😭😭😭😭 even worse, there will be many, many more like me. Sorry to be depressed. I will come back with some witty observations later.

NatoPMT · 13/03/2020 08:23

I’ve missed a few pages so sorry if this has been covered.

How does everyone feel about Jenny Harries, Chris Whitty etc now?

inmylifeIlovedthemall · 13/03/2020 08:24

Phew, have caught up at last.

Thank you Fuckthiswind for your lovely opening post. I have been here since the start (recently namechanged) and honestly don’t think I would be coping now without you all. I really feel I have found my tribe.

I am older, with an underlying heart condition which put me in a very high risk category. I feel totally thrown under the bus by BJ and his cronies and increasingly angry.

The comments about people dying before their time really got to me in yesterdays press conference. The whole thing was a patronising charade, explaining why our country will be putting the stability of the financial markets above the lives of well over a million people.

The time for averting a high number of deaths has now passed and I suspect that history will prove that the UK experiences the highest % death toll of any country in Europe. That will be down to our initial failure to restrict unwell travellers entering our population, a reluctance to allow people to work from home where possible and a dogged determination to continue to keep schools open. It will also be due to a reluctance to properly fund and equip the NHS to face the forthcoming pressures. The time for throwing money at this problem was when there was still equipment and resources available to buy and establish, not this week in some grandstand Budget gesture.

I am as prepped as possible but struggling mentally to face dying alone, at home, possibly in great distress and then potentially. being buried in a mass grave. My family are half an hour away, but as I am having to self isolate I haven’t seen them for 10 days and now face possibly never seeing them again.

If I have learned anything from all of this it is that I have wasted too much of my life, doing the right things, working hard to provide financial stability and following the rules.

My advise to anyone struggling with a decision regarding whether to take their children out of school, is to do what feel right for you and your family. Stuff the rules. The only things that really matter now is your family, your loved ones and your community.

When this is all over the country will be in shock and I hope very much you will not be being pursued for fines or refused school places. If you are I hope that the society that remains will bite back at our political class and make it clear that their behaviour in all of this has been totally unacceptable !!
