Prepping for Pandemic... 14

FuckThisWind · 12/03/2020 18:55

OK folks, we have been prepping for a Pandemic for 13 threads now. And a Pandemic we now have.

I think we all know this has gone beyond prepping now. And most of us agree that the UK Government has not really stepped up to the mark. We have had shared advice here from our Italian residents and those in other countries who have taken much more stringent measures.

So this thread continues to be about us being prepared. But it is more than that. It is about support, sharing of information and advice. It is now a community. A community who acknowledged a long time ago that this was always 'Not Just The Flu'

I thank you one and all for being here. We have tough times ahead. But we are all still here. Please share, rant, whatever. The great thing about these threads is that they have always been supportive and non judgemental. I like to think it's a safe space for all of us who are concerned. And trying to do our best. For ourselves. For our loved ones. And for our community and beyond.

Another one grateful for this thread and for all the preppers sharing their knowledge and tips about how to be prepared. It's a relief to know this is here. Thank you !

I'm hoping that dds University closes - some uni's are moving towards online lectures.
Keeping Ds off school from Monday - saying he's got a cough so self isolating.

Bought a stash of Easter eggs and also mothers day cards / birthday cards to cover the next few months.

I bought some Salbutamol inhalers online which came on Tuesday. No asthma but can be used for severe chest infections so added them to the first aid stash. Also my digital thermometer came too. Ds is on melatonin and meds for his Adhd, I requested his meds from the hospital early so he has 4 months worth now.
I also managed to get an extra months worth of my meds (don't ask me how) so if we are on lock down we should be good for a while.

I'm sorting out the spare room today as using that as the isolation room should it be necessary. Other than that, keeping on top of all hhold chores as much as possible.

@84TinsOfBeans did I come back to you about my callow dehydrator? It’s a 5 tray with a horizontal fan and packs away quite neatly. It’s cylindrical.

I think Amazon sell callows for around £60 but o bought second hand.

Lovely reminder about the food bank. I’ll be sure to try and get some stocks of pasta in the bins next time I brave a big supermarket.

FuckThisWind · 13/03/2020 06:12

Morning preppers!

Hope you're all feeling as well as you can be, and had a good nights sleep.

Hi Bercows I was on the Brexit boards too.

Welcome @Graphista. I am familiar with you and your situation. I'm starting to wonder if GPs may start asking Pharmacies to keep Hand sanitiser aside for those most in need. May be worth a quick call to your GP to voice your fears. I hope you manage to get what you need with the combination of deliveries you have.

itsnotjustflu how are you feeling this morning?

DD will have to go to my Mums. And I'm rejoining the Retail front line later today. God help me!

Braving the supermarket to get some fresh fruit to dehydrate.

But also going to try and spend some time today Not Being A Prepper.
Unsurprisingly, I am a bit of a Trekkie and the new episode of Picard is available. I have a window of opportunity to watch that today. I need to give my emotions some time off. Regroup for the next phase.

FuckThisWind · 13/03/2020 06:25

Good luck bellini

And very good point about giving emotions time off. I have something similar planned for my down time on Sunday. Hope you enjoy switching off.

Posharmchairs · 13/03/2020 06:32

@bellinisurge what are your favourites to dehydrate? I’ve only really done veggies as that’s what we use most had I buy frozen fruit.

Pegase · 13/03/2020 06:33

Incidentally why are people so worried about school fines?! Really it would be the very last thing on a school SLT's mind at the moment, even if an attendance officer tries to claim otherwise! Just don't send your child if you don't want to!

FlamingoMingo · 13/03/2020 06:34

Another one delurking to say thank you to everyone for their help and advise. I've been following since the early threads and we're as ready as we can be.
I too feel so frustrated at the lack of action by the government. At work we're about to split into two teams doing alternate fortnights in the office and then working from home. For business resilience the two teams have to stay completely separate from each other and never come into contact. The two people I get on with best are going to be in the opposing team to me and so it's likely I now won't see them for months ☹️

itsnotjustflu · 13/03/2020 06:36

Morning

@fuckthiswind thanks for asking. Scared I guess. If schools aren't shut in the next 10 days I'm going to have to find a way of telling dh we are deregistering him without a row. Couldn't get to sleep...woke silly early with the worry. Boris knows this disease is going to be around for a very long time

84TinsOfBeans · 13/03/2020 06:39

@Catmaiden @Posharmchairs
Thank you for the guidance on dehydrators.
I've bought a beginners guide book for my husband's birthday and I'll write a voucher to buy one. The price range is so vast so I'd like to confer with him. I'm going to pass on your advice so thanks again.

We have a glut of strawberries in the summer so looking forward to doing those. I also would like to make apple crisps for snacks so we can stop the plastic waste of buying expensive little packets.

What are your favourite items to dehydrate and what do you do with the end products that you have?

84TinsOfBeans · 13/03/2020 06:41

I see I should add @bellinisurge to the dehydrator gang too. See message above

Posharmchairs · 13/03/2020 06:46

@84TinsOfBeans

I like to dehydrate veg that I use in lots of our staple meals.

Mushrooms, peppers...

It’s useful to be able to buy reduced food that’s getting a little squidgy and save it.

Strawberries and bananas also make lovely snacks. (Though not according to my small who would choose a sprout over a raspberry 🙄).

I also use it for lemons and oranges for decorations and for special occasion drinks. In Spain I think dehydrated grapefruit is a thing with your cocktail.

And yes I’ve gone off piste 😂 but I reckon we need a cocktail even if it’s not yet 7am!

FuckThisWind · 13/03/2020 06:54

I really believe, with all my heart that schools will be closed by next Friday. The news this morning shows that CV is rampant now. Lots of sporting fixtures worldwide are postponed or cancelled. Football players and coaches testing positive. Chelsea football club having to self isolate. What does that show us? That travel, crowds, handshaking etc is all spreading this like wildfire.

So quite how much longer can Boris get away with this 'Science shows us that it doesn't always help closing schools and banning large gatherings' bullshit?
Wake up and smell the fucking coffee, mate. This thing is going to peak quicker than your graphs show. And you're making that happen!

I’ve been feeling upset angry this morning. But after pondering the numbers and what if anything I might do this protest song came into my mind and the video really says what I am feeling. Perhaps it time, again, to be Singing for our Lives

The numbers I was pondering are these:

Boris Johnson says there are probably 10,000 people infected. Chris Whitty saying he thinks the case fatality rate is 1% meaning there are 90 people infected now (1) who will die in the next three weeks (2).

I want to ask why they think it is reasonable for people who have a higher risk of death of they catch this disease to continue to work, travel shop and and generally interact with a population where 1 in 6,600 (3) - that’s approximately 1,477 people in London, 160 in Glasgow or 17 in Uxbridge and Ruislip (4) - are already infected.

32 thousand people in Uxbridge and Ruislip are over 50 and at this higher risk. 5 of them are probably infected and one, perhaps not even showing any symptoms yet, may die in the next three weeks. If that was you how would you want to spend your remaining time?

(1) 1% of 10,000 is 100, 10 have already died
(2) from infection to recovery or infection to death was calculated at approximately 3 weeks in the early stages of the pandemic.
(3) 66,000,000 divided by 10,000 is 1 in 6,600
(4) Populations of London, Glasgow and constituency of Uxbridge and Ruislip divided by 6,600
(5) Around 150 people were at a conference in fishmonger’s Hall last November. One of then was a terrorist who started to attack those present. He ran outside and police, paramedics and members of the public became involved, perhaps another 50 people. 1 terrorist, 2 people dead, 2 seriously injured, 2 less seriously injured. Everyone else shocked and many traumatised. 1% dead, 2% injured, the vast majority with no visible sign of being in any way affected in the long term.

bellinisurge · 13/03/2020 06:58

My big favourite to dehydrate is fruit leather. Use a bit of whizzed up stewed apple as a base. Going to try kiwi today or whatever is in Tesco when I brave it after dropping dd off at school.
Made it with orange, with raspberries, just plain apple.
Dd absolutely loves it.
Obviously it's a bad time of year for fruit but, fuck it.

Nomorewineever · 13/03/2020 07:11

@MrsPlesWearsAFez thank you (meds thing). Back I go today then!!😷

pemberlyshades · 13/03/2020 07:17

Woken up feeling really tearful. That article about Iran mass graves is awful but thank you for sharing.
I might try to do some yoga or guided meditation today.
Plan for the weekend is to put together emergency bags (can anyone remember which thread we covered that in?!)
Buy paint for redecorating when we are told to self isolate.
Take stock and maybe meal plan.

SharpieInThe · 13/03/2020 07:23

Good Morning Preppers. Thank you for such a positive start to the thread.

I'm shopping today, usual shop not a prep shop but I'm a nosey parker so I'll be checking out the shelves and other people's trolleys.

I went to Food Warehouse this week and it's like Costco Lite with no membership.

itsnotjustflu · 13/03/2020 07:28

DS not going in today. Not telling the school a particular reason why until Monday. Anyone else?

VenetoResident · 13/03/2020 07:28

@aliasname

Can I ask what things you are struggling with at the moment? Is there anything obvious that we haven't thought of which the supermarkets run out of quickly?

We went shopping yesterday to buy printer paper. We went to the equivalent of a Tesco extra.

The only thing that was missing (apart from hand sanitiser) was vegetables. There were some, but I wanted cauli, broccoli, cabbage, carrots, onions. None. We came away with green beans.

But speaking to friends that was a completely isolated experience. Other shops had plenty. But were really limiting numbers of shoppers.

We will just eat our way through the sack of green beans!

People are struggling with what the requirements really mean. Imagine thousands of people living in apartments with dogs. They need walking. Is that allowed? How long, how far, how often?

Today they will shut all the parks in my city - to stop the gatherings of people. But they have clarified that a walk or jog near your home is fine.

There is a lot of finger pointing on local FB groups.

HasaDigaEebowai · 13/03/2020 07:30

My dc are now out of school. It isn’t great since ds1 is in year 10 so doing gcse work but he’ll have to cope. Tip for anyone considering pulling your dc out - think about what they will need now. Limited number of revision guides etc in our library, we had to hunt around for another mouse to set up another computer so both dcs can work and the WiFi is struggling with me working and two dcs also online at the same time. We will also need more printer ink. School is very much in my bad books with its poor communication and insistence with everything carrying on completely as normal (unnecessary since it’s an independent)

itsnotjustflu · 13/03/2020 07:30

@pemberlyshades I think it was 11

@FuckThisWind well said

youkiddingme · 13/03/2020 07:33

Officially there's no cases in our nearest City. On a local facebook group I have seen several reports of people who know someone who has it. There are pics of local streets with medics in attendance in Hazmat suits to back up these reports. We're starting to hear of prominent people with it. like the Chelsea player and Aresenal coach. I think the government guestimate of 10 000 is way too low.
