Prepping for Pandemic... 14

OK folks, we have been prepping for a Pandemic for 13 threads now. And a Pandemic we now have.

I think we all know this has gone beyond prepping now. And most of us agree that the UK Government has not really stepped up to the mark. We have had shared advice here from our Italian residents and those in other countries who have taken much more stringent measures.

So this thread continues to be about us being prepared. But it is more than that. It is about support, sharing of information and advice. It is now a community. A community who acknowledged a long time ago that this was always 'Not Just The Flu'

I thank you one and all for being here. We have tough times ahead. But we are all still here. Please share, rant, whatever. The great thing about these threads is that they have always been supportive and non judgemental. I like to think it's a safe space for all of us who are concerned. And trying to do our best. For ourselves. For our loved ones. And for our community and beyond.

@oops - teachers here have set up Google classrooms and host google hangouts for lessons. Good luck. It's so hard for me kids to keep track between the hwk logging system, Google classrooms and emails.

@Lego.... 💐💐 When will you get there?

@pemberlyshades - I think that's due to the more even spread in the UK. Yesterday there were cases in 21 provinces. Lombardy has had 56% of all cases.

sideorderofchips · 14/03/2020 17:19

Are hospital coping or are we just told this to prevent more panic

middleager · 14/03/2020 17:23

I'm actually feeling a bit numb. It was always going to be awful but knowing the rest of the world is taking action to limit the damage and protect lives, whilst the UK does nothing is horrifying. I can't quite believe this is real.

This is what I feel. If we were at least trying to fight this strategically I would feel less helpless. Instead, it feels as if we are just being sent over the top.

Our children will have long memories.
In 4 years mine will be old enough to vote.

wherearemychickens if I remember right I think the comment about the virus binding to zinc might have come from people who were recommending zinc in lozenges (there was a particular one, in a statement from a medic, cold-eze, from the US, but there are others); I think the zinc coats your mouth and throat and prevents the virus travelling to the lungs. So in that way it is a good thing!

You could look up max intakes of zinc online but I also read something about 80g dose being prescribed, again that was in what I think was a professional article and I've read so many I couldn't re-trace it. Sorry I can't be more certain.

Well worth investigating the lozenge coating idea. I've been taking a daily effervescent vitC + zinc for some time for the same reason as you.

ah! look up snopes.com zinc lozenges coronavirus. Near the bottom the medic says:
"In my experience as a virologist and pathologist, zinc will inhibit the replication of many viruses, including coronaviruses. I expect COVID-19 [the disease caused by the novel coronavirus] will be inhibited similarly, but I have no direct experimental support for this claim. I must add, however, that using zinc lozenges as directed by the manufacturer is no guarantee against being infected by the virus, even if it inhibits the viral replication in the nasopharynx."

Anything is worth a try!

I bought some zinc-max triple strength with copper from ebay - shall suck them when I have to go on public transport next week - hoping they don't go missing en route to me...as a couple of other items have done.

I really want to see my Mom (73). She lives 80 miles away with my brother at the moment as her partner of 30 years left at Chrismas and my mother just wanted to get away. She's been very depressed.

I used to see her a couple of times a week and was looking forward to seeing her next weekend for Mother's Day and next weekend which is cancelled.

Now my 25 year old nephew has been told by work to self isolate as he has been in direct regular contact for three days with a client who tested positive after being in Italy.
The day before he found out, my nephew had spent the evening with my mother and sge kissed and hugged him and sat by him all evening.

So any hopes I had if going to see her in the week may be gone and it leaves me worried for her. My teenage son is asthmatic so being careful too.

echobench · 14/03/2020 17:31

Haven't caught up with the new thread but continued thanks for all the advice over very many threads.

Has anyone seen this? nypost.com/2020/03/14/using-tote-bags-instead-of-plastic-could-help-spread-the-coronavirus/
I'm not familiar with the paper or how reliable it is, but this is a bit of an added worry...

pemberlyshades · 14/03/2020 17:31

This is a really reassuring twitter thread about the possible explanation behind why Bojo is taking this approach- my brother sent it to me earlier

pemberlyshades · 14/03/2020 17:34

@VenetoResident yes I agree. The geographical spread is more even here... so far anyway!

GeistohneGrenzen · 14/03/2020 17:36

Sprayitall I believe another good egg substitute is the liquid from a can of chick peas. It has a 'proper' name and is used a lot by vegans, but that's all I remember!

wheresmymojo · 14/03/2020 17:40

Aquafaber is the name of chickpea juice

Posted on Reddit - haven't checked French news to validate as my French is merde.

"got a message from one of my friends who is a doctor in France this week letting me know that from what they are seeing in YOUNG French patients, taking anti-inflammatory drugs like Ibuprofen or Cortisone when you are ill or showing Covid symptoms could make you worse off and could potentially mean your case becomes severe. This seems to be quite rare so far but she told me this before an official source confirmed it and it has now been made public information in France, not sure about the UK but just FYI, please stick to paracetamol if you show symptoms for now."

echobench · 14/03/2020 17:45

@wheresmymojo I saw that in Le Monde -- advice from French health minister.

Mum2jenny · 14/03/2020 17:47

I was out locally this afternoon, couldn’t get a parking space in the local Morrison’s, so didn’t bother. Went to the other supermarket and got most of what I wanted. However no frozen scallops - an obvious essential in life!! I did get hand wash liquid as I just realized the one in the loo I never use was really manky.. and washing ones hands are essential apparently!!!!

wheresmymojo · 14/03/2020 17:48

Two things I have noticed today that I haven't bought extra of:

  • Baking parchment (currently hoping my banana bread isn't going to stick to the tin)
  • Washing up sponges
AlohaMolly · 14/03/2020 17:52

If we don’t need to tell someone we have it, they surely aren’t recording figures at all??

I saw the twitter thread as well, saying that Johnson is following the science to achieve herd immunity, but is that possible? Do you get immunity from a flu type virus?

Orchidflower1 · 14/03/2020 17:52

@Legoandloldolls I’m sorry to hear your having added stress from someone who is supposed to be helping you.

I’m really cross and sad at Dh as he’s going to a friends 10th wedding anniversary party tonight. I have phoned and said I can’t come ( anxiety awful/ risk of infection etc). I asked dh not to go but he still is.

pemberlyshades · 14/03/2020 17:54

Omg mojo that's so freaky- I thought the exact same thing! Baking paper and washing up cloths!!!

Pppppickupapenguin · 14/03/2020 18:01

This made me laugh. A lot.

Nomorewineever · 14/03/2020 18:03

@wheresmymojo tallies with asthma. Ibuprofen can make respiratory issues worse in asthmatics. So maybe it does the same with this?

ooopsupsideyourhead · 14/03/2020 18:21

@VenetoResident thanks for your helpful updates so far on how things are going in Italy, hoping that you will have time to answer a couple of questions?

  1. How are services such as rubbish collection and post affected?
  2. Are food shops well stocked, or is it mostly basic provisions available?
  3. (frivolous!) are the TV stations showing anything distracting, like family films?
Sprayitall · 14/03/2020 18:23

Thank you all for your lovely suggestions. I am just going by a no egg recipe let me see how it turns out. Panic buyers everywhere and the little shop near home ran out of plain flour. I can’t believe this because not many buy it usually. Me and dd not going out .. dh ran some errands today to prepare ourselves a little better. Got some gardening stuff to keep us busy for few days. Dh talked to a friend who said he is still sending kids to school but couple of them are having phlegmy cough so he will call the school and ask if he can leave them there. The parents both work from home and their kids attend the same school as dd but still they think leaving them at the school is the best solution (which makes me look like unnecessarily panicking mum once again) I am dreading Monday and the absence lectures from dd’s school 😭 My dd is scared and doesn’t want to go . She loves school in ordinary days and a very level headed for her age. what are you all going to say/do? Could someone pm me about that.

Sprayitall · 14/03/2020 18:30

Does anyone know how do we vacuum pack cabbage? Do we chop them up or do it full? Also do they get freezer burns?

pemberlyshades · 14/03/2020 18:35

@Nomorewineever and @wheresmymojo and also it can make chicken pox worse right? And isn't that part of the herpes virus class? It seems like covid 19 is a mix of herpes, aids, sars etc. It does beg the question- where did it come from?
