Prepping for Pandemic... 14

OK folks, we have been prepping for a Pandemic for 13 threads now. And a Pandemic we now have.

I think we all know this has gone beyond prepping now. And most of us agree that the UK Government has not really stepped up to the mark. We have had shared advice here from our Italian residents and those in other countries who have taken much more stringent measures.

So this thread continues to be about us being prepared. But it is more than that. It is about support, sharing of information and advice. It is now a community. A community who acknowledged a long time ago that this was always 'Not Just The Flu'

I thank you one and all for being here. We have tough times ahead. But we are all still here. Please share, rant, whatever. The great thing about these threads is that they have always been supportive and non judgemental. I like to think it's a safe space for all of us who are concerned. And trying to do our best. For ourselves. For our loved ones. And for our community and beyond.

@Legoandloldolls That Bombay potato looks amazing :) I bet it tastes awesome too .. if I batch cook and freeze curries for naan or chapattis I make them the same way - more spicy and thick so we can dilute it with water when we boil it anyway.
Dd acted sneaky and looks like she ate a handful of fondant icing when decorating the biscuits and now m worried it might make her sick. I haven’t used them before and now I am regretting it. What a worry

wheresmymojo · 14/03/2020 19:54

Jesus Christ. I just went on to the thread about people being selfish and not self isolating.

The level of continuing idiocy and selfishness is jaw dropping.

MoonlightMistletoe · 14/03/2020 19:57

That looks lovely @Legoandloldolls ! I've just made a beef mince curry with the veg that needed using up from the fridge, kids loved it too so win win! Going to freeze half for another night.

Have you got any favourite recipes for a curry dish? It's my favourite food to make and food seems to be the only distraction from this madness right now, apart from my children of course but I can't eat them Grin

I've stocked up several litre bottles of water because they keep doing random maintenance around here and we've had to do without a few times. We usually get notice but one time the water just wasn't working for a while.

Some people now worry that all the water maintenance people will get sick and supplies could vanish, but I feel like that's unlikely. Surely the army would get involved at that point?

Anyway though, I don't understand why you wouldn't have a few spare water bottles just in case (assuming you can afford it).

MoonlightMistletoe · 14/03/2020 19:58

What else can be grown on the windowsill? I've only got a few house plants and an aloe plant and would love to get on board with growing my own herbs!

Graphista · 14/03/2020 20:04

@pemberlyshades - nice to be noticed/thought of thank you.

I’ve been reading but took a long time to catch up on posts.

Also because I’m still furiously googling my favoured cleaning product trying to find supplies - to no avail - and frankly even getting substitutions is getting really difficult.

I’m having to literally limit what I do as a result. Which is where I was ocd wise several months ago. I’d reached a point I was still housebound but was moving around in the house, eating and sleeping better and that’s all now going rapidly downhill.

@tryingtoprep - yes I’m thinking the same! That the elderly and people with underlying conditions make up a much larger proportion of the population than the govt and media are wanting to make out!

I just read on another thread that some doctors are advising against use of anti-inflammatories like ibuprofen, and saying to stick to paracetamol if you have covid-19. So make sure you have paracetamol around if you haven't already.

MoonlightMistletoe · 14/03/2020 20:09

Great @Oxyiz I only have ibuprofen as it takes the edge off of my migraines and paracetamol doesn't help at all! Now I'm wondering to not use pain relief at all just in case :/

Miaowse · 14/03/2020 20:11

In case it is of use to anyone...

www.medisave.co.uk/search/?q=Virusolve

“Virusolve+ RTU is an effective disinfectant against 2019 Wuhan Novel Coronavirus (2019-nCoV).”

They have two types of wipes & a spray, but it is q expensive & high postage. I haven’t ordered any myself (nor bought from the company, but a relative has used and recommended Medisave to me before).

Also, there is a brand of pulse oximeter that has some kind of link up with St Johns Ambulance - out of stock most places but available with free delivery from here: www.kinetikwellbeing.com/product/pulseoximeter/

My sore throat has developed into a cold with no coughing (phew) haven't got to go anywhere til Thurs anyway so will be lying low til then (I work from home, so no time off for me).

I need to go through the fridge tomorrow, we've got a few ends of meals that need using up, and I might send DH to the green grocers stall to top up on veg when I know what's in.

I can't keep herb plants alive when I buy them. They always seem to die really dramatically within about a week. Don't know what I'm doing wrong.

Another fan of nemotodes to control slugs, we have tons, I also use slug traps with beer, egg shells and slug tape. But nemotodes make the subsequent fight much easier.

Pebble21uk · 14/03/2020 20:28

I've just been on one of my regular prepper forums and asked about P3 masks (I have Force 8 Press to check P3s) and yes, for anyone interested, they do protect from coronavirus.

I don't suppose anything is 100% but they do have significant impact. They look pretty extreme though, so will need a bit bravery to wear... but hey, I'm asthmatic and I have an 83 year old mum with hear failure - so I give no fucks if it keeps me safe!

Pebble21uk · 14/03/2020 20:29

heart failure!!!

youkiddingme · 14/03/2020 20:30

Thank you very much tryingtoprep - just what I needed.

Sprayitall · 14/03/2020 20:30

Supermarket herbs don’t grow well. The garden centre ones do. I have no idea why.

Orchidflower1 · 14/03/2020 20:32

Has anyone had any thoughts re propolis lozenges?

Years ago my granny used to take a spoon full of honey “ for the propolis” I’m not quite sure if she was right or what it does. Is propolis in/ fro honey?

I was looking on the Holland and Barrett website for zinc stuff and saw some propolis lozenges wondering about getting them as a preventative??

Sprayitall · 14/03/2020 20:32

How long can wear p3 masks? I found out it’s very hard to breather when wearing one

Sprayitall · 14/03/2020 20:32

breathe*

preponderings · 14/03/2020 20:34

Haven't really had time to catch up. Hugs to all facing difficult decisions right now.

Schools are closed, a family has tested positive. It's likely all shops expect supermarkets and pharmacies will shut in the next few days. I've ordered DD some shoes (I know we'll be limited going out, but she only has winter boots). But having a total mind blank as to what we might need from non-food shops. DH wants to go out on a family picnic tomorrow, I just want to stay home!

Sprayitall · 14/03/2020 20:34

@Orchidflower1 I have no idea what propolis is but zincovit c has them all (zinc , vit c and propolis) I ordered two couple of weeks ago from healthaid eBay

Sprayitall · 14/03/2020 20:38

@preponderings which county is the family from? Dh is very conscious while going out but doesn’t want to be thought as an weirdo so he is resisting gloves when out and about.

We don’t have lot of masks (just a couple of them that was used during the paint job lol) When is it better to start wearing them all? We don’t want to run out of it when the peak time comes neither do we want to risk ourselves. I am very confused

Joyfulljenny · 14/03/2020 20:40

Regarding ibuprofen, the man in the Manchester Evening News article who actually had it found it actually alleviated his symptoms

Pebble21uk · 14/03/2020 20:45

Sprayitall do you have one with a valve with 'low breathing resistance'? I tried mine today and was surprised at how much better it was than I thought it would be! I also have a Cambridge Masks N99 fabric mask and it was actually easier to breathe in the P3.

The cartridges on the P3 shoudl last 350 hours I think if in 'normal' air ie not worn in a smog etc. You can also buy replacement cartridges for them (although whether we'd be able to get hold of any is another matter!)

applesandpears33 · 14/03/2020 20:45

Growing herbs can be a bit hit or miss from the supermarket, but I still have a mint plant in the garden that I bought from Aldi about 10 years ago. Basil and corriander plants usually stay alive for a month or two before they get so stringy they have to be thrown out. I'm hoping fresh herbs could add a bit of zing to otherwise dull foods.

Oxyiz · 14/03/2020 20:51

Reuters story on France warning against anti-inflammatories here: https://www.reuters.com/article/us-health-coronavirus-france-drug/france-warns-against-use-of-anti-inflammatory-drugs-to-tackle-coronavirus-idUSKBN2110Q8. It doesn't say why though, so maybe it's all still guesswork?
