Prepping for Pandemic... 14

OK folks, we have been prepping for a Pandemic for 13 threads now. And a Pandemic we now have.

I think we all know this has gone beyond prepping now. And most of us agree that the UK Government has not really stepped up to the mark. We have had shared advice here from our Italian residents and those in other countries who have taken much more stringent measures.

So this thread continues to be about us being prepared. But it is more than that. It is about support, sharing of information and advice. It is now a community. A community who acknowledged a long time ago that this was always 'Not Just The Flu'

I thank you one and all for being here. We have tough times ahead. But we are all still here. Please share, rant, whatever. The great thing about these threads is that they have always been supportive and non judgemental. I like to think it's a safe space for all of us who are concerned. And trying to do our best. For ourselves. For our loved ones. And for our community and beyond.

Frightening as those are just hospital admissions. Come on Boris this is horrid

pemberlyshades · 14/03/2020 14:27

@elsa8 where have you seen that? Health and social cares twitter hasn't posted today's numbers yet.

Sprayitall · 14/03/2020 14:27

@Saffronesque I don’t have many plants and they all are in individual pots. I don’t want to kill the slugs(I don’t have the heart to do that ) I don’t know why may be the way I was brought up. DJ says a 9v battery will do the trick I need to find the idea. Will keep you posted how I get on.

Orchidflower1 · 14/03/2020 14:28

That’s staggering 21 is just awful. 🌺

Orchidflower1 · 14/03/2020 14:29

Sky news say 21

Whatthefoxgoingon · 14/03/2020 14:30

I don’t understand the reasoning behind not testing in the community? We will have massively underreported the numbers. Our scientists won’t have the correct data to learn from this; they need all the information they can get or how will we learn from these unprecedented times?

MacronsPensWiper · 14/03/2020 14:30

Each death is about 10 thousand infected

Justmum89 · 14/03/2020 14:31

I thought they were calculating it as each death = 1,000 cases?

AlohaMolly · 14/03/2020 14:32

Fuck.

Does over 20 trigger something?

TiddleTaddleTat · 14/03/2020 14:32

If the expected mortality is 1% then surely one in a 100?

MacronsPensWiper · 14/03/2020 14:33

What the fox.

The only thing I heard is that doctors don't test for flu but flu victims in hospital get logged and they get accurate figs from that??

Whatthefoxgoingon · 14/03/2020 14:34

This truly seems like back of the envelope guesstimates. Sampling size is too small surely.

MacronsPensWiper · 14/03/2020 14:34

Just my figs are probably wrong

Justmum89 · 14/03/2020 14:34

@TiddleTaddleTat yes that sounds right to me though when we were on 10 deaths they were saying they estimate there to be 5-10k cases? I dont know anymore it's all too much to process 😭

MoonlightMistletoe · 14/03/2020 14:35

Are we expecting cases to double daily now then?

MacronsPensWiper · 14/03/2020 14:35

I'm keeping older dd off from Monday.

MoonlightMistletoe · 14/03/2020 14:36

Did you see the sky broadcast on twitter? The reporter asked if the gobs response is going to change and he responded with a blunt NO!

MoonlightMistletoe · 14/03/2020 14:37

UPDATE on coronavirus (#COVID19) testing in the UK:
As of 9am on 14 March, a total of 37,746 have been tested:

36,606 negative
1140 positive

Across the UK, 21 patients who tested positive for coronavirus (COVID-19) have sadly died. t.co/YEo5QOEGzX

QueSera · 14/03/2020 14:42

We are following Italy's pattern.
Yesterday we mirrored them two weeks ago, 27 Feb:
Italy 27 Feb: 650 cases and 17 deaths
UK yesterday: 798 cases and 11 deaths

Today we mirror them at 28 Feb:
Italy 28 Feb: 888 cases and 21 deaths
UK today: 1,140 cases and 21 deaths

I had thought that if we continue to follow Italy's pattern that we could expect a sharp uptick in deaths early/mid next week. Today's death number was higher than I expected. Sad
Totally hope I'm wrong about all this and that UK's lack of action works out....Confused

Readyme · 14/03/2020 14:47

The new confirmed cases didn't shock me but 10 deaths in 24 hours was a big shock despite knowing we are following Italy's numbers the reality of the situation is shocking.

Pebble21uk · 14/03/2020 14:48

Anyone know when the next COBRA meeting is due?

lachy · 14/03/2020 14:52

I took DD (4) to her ballet class, and then into her swimming lesson this morning. Ballet teacher asked all children to wash their hands and then use sanitizer before and after class. I'm expecting an email to say that her class will close (children range from 2 - starting school).

Swimming lesson - was only DD and two other children in the pool where normally there would be at least 6. I expect that her lessons will stop after next Saturday.

I'd been deliberating whether to go today or not, but she's not going to either until the peak is over.

DH and DD have gone to pick up the click and collect shopping and I'm planning the deep clean of our house. I want to bleach the house from top to bottom, strip the beds, boil wash the bedding (anxiety always makes me want to go crazy with the cleaning).

In the summer sales last year I bought all of DD's clothes for this summer, I'm glad I did, because apart from essential stuff I don't want to be going in any shops and certainly not to buy clothes!

My switch off hobby is crochet, I'm doing a virus (!Confused!) shawl at the moment, and can highly recommend it as a "take your mind off things" activity. (I taught myself using the Bella Coco tutorials on YouTube.)

Sprayitall · 14/03/2020 14:52

What.. sorry I am just seeing the numbers.. 21?? Ten in a day? Can’t believe this
