Prepping for Pandemic... 14

OK folks, we have been prepping for a Pandemic for 13 threads now. And a Pandemic we now have.

I think we all know this has gone beyond prepping now. And most of us agree that the UK Government has not really stepped up to the mark. We have had shared advice here from our Italian residents and those in other countries who have taken much more stringent measures.

So this thread continues to be about us being prepared. But it is more than that. It is about support, sharing of information and advice. It is now a community. A community who acknowledged a long time ago that this was always 'Not Just The Flu'

I thank you one and all for being here. We have tough times ahead. But we are all still here. Please share, rant, whatever. The great thing about these threads is that they have always been supportive and non judgemental. I like to think it's a safe space for all of us who are concerned. And trying to do our best. For ourselves. For our loved ones. And for our community and beyond.

The articles. Still "could" do this. "Might" do that. Meanwhile everywhere else in the world does it now. I wish we were special in the UK. Some kind of magical healing power in our water but I don't think it's true.

I need to go away and do my breathing exercises. I'm getting too worked up. Maybe the UK approach is the right one. Maybe all the other countries have got it wrong. We can but hope.

For emergencies I've got quinine. Couldn't get hold of chloroquine but found the natural derivative, cinchona bark. It has some scary side effects so I plan to take only if I develop bad symptoms and can't access help.

BlackeyedSusan · 13/03/2020 23:13

@MrsWhites me too.

Swearing at the radio has definitely increased too.

wheresmymojo · 13/03/2020 23:14

I'll be honest this whole thing is making me turn into more of a wannabe Dictator by the fucking minute.

If I was in charge I think I'd be going full China on everyone's arse now.

wheresmymojo · 13/03/2020 23:15

A few weeks ago:

Me: "OMG they're welding people into their apartments" Shock

Now:

Me: "I wish we could just weld all these fuckers into their houses"

tryingtoprep · 13/03/2020 23:18

I vote for you @wheresmymojo! I really need to switch off for a while. Hope everyone manages some time out. De-stressing and sleep is so important right now.

BlackeyedSusan · 13/03/2020 23:19

Hmm, now that sounds a good idea!

Catmaiden · 13/03/2020 23:21

I've only been averaging a couple of hours a night for the last week :(

HasaDigaEebowai · 13/03/2020 23:22

I wish I could weld us into the house!

BanKittenHeels · 13/03/2020 23:26

Not sure who asked after me sorry - I’m all a dither.
Work has been manic, everyone trying to get in with other things before “something kicks off”. Tension in the air in palpable.
I’m actually self isolating as of today (although we are taking it as a whole household as the nanny and her DP both have a cough and are febrile too) and DH is at a hotel. DC all fine.

In a huge quarrel with a friend who is refusing to self isolate but go on holiday.

Period from hell on top of all this but it was late and was starting to panic I might need to POAS, so that’s something of a relief in this troubling time (and my specific circumstances).

Dreading our dogs realising they won’t be getting walks. All 3 of them live for a good chase around the park and one of them even accompanies DH on his runs. They will all have a lot of energy to burn off.

I spent most of this evening learning some new embroidery stitches which was a nice little break.

AmelieTaylor · 13/03/2020 23:31

I wish I was 10 years younger & didn’t have diabetes. I’d still be worried about older friends & family, but I’d feel better placed to help them

MrsWhites · 13/03/2020 23:31

As someone else said, media coverage is full of ‘they may’ or ‘it is thought’ it’s all crap! If you look at daily mail home page right now, the main headline says ‘mass gatherings will be banned from next weekend but schools will stay open’...literally an inch further down the page ‘Schools prepare to close for a 4 week extended Easter break’!

FFS make your mind up!!!

AlohaMolly · 13/03/2020 23:32

The Welsh health minister has taken action with the nhs in wales - all outpatient treatment suspended amongst other things.

Vaki · 13/03/2020 23:33

I think we're at the tipping point now, large events cancelled, queen cancelling events, panicking buying.

Now the government are under pressure from the public, back benches and the world health organisation which suggests to me we will very quickly be moving to highly suggesting working from home and possible school suspensions or at least reduced openings

AmelieTaylor · 13/03/2020 23:38

@BanKittenHeels

Oh god, I can’t believe your nanny & her bf are showing symptoms on top of everything else!😖

Embroidery sounds good.

I had a few minutes earlier when I was suitably distracted & didn’t think about it for about half an hour, but it was a horrible sick feeling when it all came flooding back.

I just want to go back to life before this!! It didn’t seem great at the time, but fuck me, I’d willingly take that now!!

wherearemychickens · 13/03/2020 23:41

Mistletoe, where is your excerpt from a page back please? About schools potentially closing for 13-16 weeks?

BanKittenHeels · 13/03/2020 23:45

AmelieTaylor

I know, trust us all to get it in one go but it’s close quarters in this house with so many kids and DH and I working where we do, it was only so long before one of us brought it home.

I am luckily off until 22/03 anyway, so I’m not missing any work through self isolation. All going well with these symptoms, I’ll be back in work on that date.

BanKittenHeels · 13/03/2020 23:48

That’s assuming “it” is covid. It could be anything. Our little fomites of children are always bringing home bugs so usually 3-4 of us have a cough or elevated temp at anyone time!

Embroidery kits are about £10 on Amazon, if anyone wants to pick up something fun for some mindfulness. This game with two beginners projects including instructions.

MidsummerMeadow · 13/03/2020 23:49

I’ve had a panic attack and can’t stop crying. Triggered by the telegraph front page of a man on the tube in a full gas mask. My anxiety has been under control for a few years and I’ve been concerned but ok in the past few weeks but suddenly the lid blew off tonight. I live alone so have no one to talk to or help calm me down so I hope you don’t mind me posting here. I’m frightened. What’s happened to the world, to our country, everything was ok a few months ago now we’ve plunged into a nightmare. I don’t want my loved ones to die awful deaths.

wheresmymojo · 13/03/2020 23:51

This thread goes to show what a shit shower the Govt advice is.

The DH sounds like he actually could have CV and some posters are getting snippy about the suggestion that the rest of the family should self isolate so as not to spread it because 'that's not the official guidance'

We think DH has coronavirus.... www.mumsnet.com/Talk/coronavirus/3847443-We-think-DH-has-coronavirus

AmelieTaylor · 13/03/2020 23:52

In ‘Good news’ today (well all considered!!)

I’ve heard of a few things that have been postponed or otherwise significantly changed

The Masons (yes, the secretive hand shake mob) have said NO shaking hands, not even with gloves on. Over 65’s banned from a Big Deal Meeting in a couple of weeks and a no fundraising/promotional events -all cancelled.

(I know it was mentioned earlier)

  • London Marathon postponed until the end of the year.

-all the sports associations that have cancelled or postponed events/entire seasons.

-neighbours daughter’s Sen school closing on Tuesday

-lots of schools giving parents the nod to keep kids home

Music Festival (the competition sort, not the party in a field sort) is changing their format to reduce numbers in the room at any one time.

It’s good to hear so many groups of people saying ‘fuck that WE will make alternative plans despite what Bozo The Clown is saying. 😊

Most touching thing I’ve heard all day though, was Liverpool’s manager Jürgen Klopp’s address to the fans. As I said earlier, I’d vote him
In as PM for sure. That’s the kind of attitude our PM should have.

RageAgainst84 · 13/03/2020 23:58

@YellowPinkie The Nido powdered milk tastes much more normal than UHT. If you made that up and refrigerated it would definite pass for normal milk. You can get it in the world food aisle of big Tescos or on Amazon

AmelieTaylor · 13/03/2020 23:59

@wherearemychickens

I’ve heard several ‘officials’ say that now, about schools needing to be closed for 13-16 weeks if they close them.

I guess because they didn’t ‘contain’ very well & it’s now do widespread and supposedly ‘delayed’ they’ll need to be closed while the longer, flatter, ‘curve’ plays out. Obviously if things had been different (ie they’d WANTED to keep the death rate low, the time the schools closed for would have been shorter. The few weeks leading up to Easter & Easter holidays might well have been enough to put a halt in its rampage around the country. But that would have to have been their goal and it clearly never was 😢

Tropicalsquirrel · 14/03/2020 00:00

So sad to hear about that baby. The standard practice here in Singapore seems to be that they separate babies and mothers to go to different hospitals (babies to the children’s hospital, mother’s to the infectious diseases centre) based on cases to date. Being separated from my little one is the thing that I’m most afraid of in this pandemic.

RageAgainst84 · 14/03/2020 00:00

Re nebulisers... the saline has to be prescribed doesn’t it? What saline are people going to be using? Could I ask my GP to prescribe or is there another option??? Ds has asthma and responds really well to saline nebs

wheresmymojo · 14/03/2020 00:00

I've just realised that if Italy's deaths carry on at the same rate as today (250) they will have as many deaths as China this time next week...and then will be exceeding China...
