Thread 12!

I can't seem to carry over the clicky links in the OP of the last thread. Can anyone else?

I have been on the threads since the first one, but I have name changed as I don’t want to out myself - sorry, I know that’s annoying

I’m not sure what to do about this....

There was a student from (senior, largely boarding) school tested last week - his test has come back ‘clear’ but we all know that means jack shit. Student is coming back to school tomorrow (personally I think they should be self isolating for 14 days) the school is already set up so everything is on the students laptops, they don’t use exercise books/paper at all) so he wouldn’t miss anything.

Another email to say one of the non resident teachers is self isolating as his wife has been to northern Italy. They’re self isolating in separate areas of their house (apparently), she has symptoms 💐 I cant see him not looking after her! if her test comes back negative he will be straight back to school (as I said, regular schooling is all done on their lap tops ) they have organised sub teacher/set work etc. So I think the teacher should self isolate for 14 days anyway.

What part of many early tests incorrectly showing as negative do they not understand?!

Roughly
2000 kids (Largely boarding)
200 teachers
200 non teaching staff
Possibly more.

I get why closing the school would be extremely difficult (large percentage of international students) but quite a few UK parents have offered to host in addition to host parents that already are on stand by)

But why put students and staff at risk as well as their families/host families & the wider community???

Why allow the student or the teacher back when they could isolate easily for a fortnight?!

Just why?😢😫🤯

(I would keep ‘Our’ kids home if the decision was mine, but it’s not. I have daily close contact with them though. I don’t really want to say more than that yet).

@exochord only bought in lots as our tap water is horrid and I don't want to have to go out and try to buy any if things get worse

I've just read this:

One in five patients positive at #coronavirus he is between 19 and 50 years old @s_brusaferro : the data confirm that all age groups contribute to the spread of the infection.

8342 positive cases #Covid_19 to 9 March 10am

  • 1.4% < 19 years
  • 22% 19-50 years old
  • 37.4%: 51-70 years old
  • 39.2%: > 70 years old

62.1% men
583 positive health workers

VenetoResident · 09/03/2020 22:16

Does anyone have a source for the Italy stats, particularly hospital admissions. I've searched Google but not finding anything and it would be really helpful to convince people close to me who are convinced this is just a big fuss about a mild flu *

VenetoResident · 09/03/2020 22:21

The link didn't open the exact page unfortunately but if you don't speak Italian, open it in Google chrome.

Annoyingly I can't attach pictures.

This bloke posts loads on Twitter and always posts government data.

itsnotjustflu · 09/03/2020 22:28

.....mushrooms. are frozen mushrooms horrid? if I slice and freeze uncooked mushrooms are they also horrid? tinned mushies not an option - yuk. If we decide not to 'mix' with society I need mushrooms somehow

.... and thank you for all being sane and rational people. It's a huge relief to have you all to cyber chat with

itsnotjustflu · 09/03/2020 22:30

p.s. hubby is officially useless at checking substitutes from Tesco. I ordered a variety of soaps as all are running out at home. Each got substituted for honey and cream soap.....urgh! He'd also ordered some freezer meals incase we feel too poorly to cook - 3 of them got replaced for liver and bacon. double urgh!

KimonoKim · 09/03/2020 22:31

@itsnotjustflu

Frozen mushrooms are absolutely fine. Can cook from frozen and end up no different to fresh. I've been having mushrooms this way for years.

AmelieTaylor · 09/03/2020 22:31

@VenetoResident

Thank you for that. That’s a higher % of under 19’s than I though, but the death rate is (thankfully) very low. It would be good if they’d used the same age groups as the earlier stats though.

MinesaPinotPlease · 09/03/2020 22:32

@ItsNotJustTheFuckingFlu

They swapped a frozen meal for liver? Shock

Wow - that is one Weird swap!

MinesaPinotPlease · 09/03/2020 22:33

Sorry tagged the wrong person :)

Your user names are very similar :)

NatoPMT · 09/03/2020 22:34

Husband just phoned me to ask if I’d bought Horlicks

So his contribution so far, is horlicks, and custard.

AmelieTaylor · 09/03/2020 22:34

@Puppycorn

Yes, we can read your posts, nothing gets overwritten. It’s just very difficult to reply to absolutely everyone. Sorry 🌷

Is there a post in particular you’d like a reply to? (Say what time & I’ll have another look at it!)

AmelieTaylor · 09/03/2020 22:37

@NatoPMT

...and not even buying it, just asking if YOU have !! 🤣🤣

Best you tell him that you have done your best, but he needs to have a look and have some input into what you have as it’s not fair for you to be solely responsible and you do not want to hear one negative word about any of it should it be required!

ofwarren · 09/03/2020 22:38

That map is brilliant @welliamnot!

GruffaloStick · 09/03/2020 22:39

VenetoResident thank you for posting the links.
It's absolutely terrifying. It feels like I'm in a bizarre nightmare - so many of the UK are still seeing this as a mild virus

GruffaloStick · 09/03/2020 22:42

Haha NatoPMT my DHs contribution was whiskey and pot noodles. PrioritiesGrin

tryingtoprep · 09/03/2020 23:00

@Puppycorn I also read your posts. I remember agreeing with pretty much everything you say. It's such a fast moving thread I've given up trying to completely catch up. I'm guessing lots of us are missing or skimming through posts. I think you were wondering what to do about school now there's a confirmed case close by? I can't remember, do any of you have preexisting conditions? Just my view but I'd definitely take DC out if so. If not, I'd probably still do it but I've always been slightly germphobic. Is it an oversubscribed school? Have you asked if they'd be able to hold the place open? Can you home educate? It's such a difficult decision. If your DH can't work from home, have him wash hands and changed into different clothes as soon as he gets home. Same for DC if staying in school. DP is still commuting in London so I understand your fears.

mumoftwodc · 09/03/2020 23:10

Thanks for the link @NatoPMT

itsnotjustflu · 09/03/2020 23:14

that's good to know about mushrooms thanks

it was a frozen liver and bacon meal...yuk. None of us eat it

MotherOfDragonite · 09/03/2020 23:19

Hello again, these threads are so fast-moving that I can't keep up!

Since I was on here last I have bought an oximeter and stocked up on extra covers for the ear thermometer (mentioning in case others have forgotten this one!), cough syrup, and vitamin C.

I am increasingly alarmed by the lack of action or solid advice from the government. They are taking no measures whatsoever to mitigate this.

"One of the theories is you could take it on the chin, take it all in one go and allow the virus to move through the population without really taking as many draconian measures.”

  • Boris Johnson

I am trying not to get too anxious but to think about the practical things I can do myself! This thread helps! I am also now walking rather than taking public transport, as we are in London.

WwwashYourHands · 09/03/2020 23:31

Sorry can’t keep up with thread.

NC. Just to say that family friend who is a doctor in Italy says it’s like a war zone. The worst thing is patients dying in isolation. Their families have to say goodbye through glass. Utterly heartbreaking.

When oh when will this inept government do something?

BanKittenHeels · 09/03/2020 23:31

Thanks for being so sweet about the old guy, it was shattering.

I am packing my bag for my next shift, usually it would be lunch, my water bottle, my ID and a spare uniform. This time I add 2 multipacks of knickers, 3 sports bras, 4/52 of my medication, condensed personal hygiene kit, a phone charger, tissues, a small fleece blanket, a hoodie and joggers, physical photos of my family and last but not least all of the work uniform I own.

BlackeyedSusan · 09/03/2020 23:34

BKH, gosh that sounds serious.

Facingtheunkown · 09/03/2020 23:49

Mother, he was quoting a medic. And after he said he would rather mitigate that. And, the way he followed up with the mitigate statement sounded like he was not happy with taking it on the chin, at all...

Re mushroom, slice or dice first or freeze whole?
