Thread 12!

I can't seem to carry over the clicky links in the OP of the last thread. Can anyone else?

Ignore me, got my maths wrong. But still 2/3 of cases seem to be in hospital. Though good to know that this is likely to be because they are not testing milder cases etc.

itsnotjustflu · 09/03/2020 18:35

My gp hasn't rung me about inhalers ... I have none and have been avoiding going in to ask. They wanted me to do an asthma review two years ago and I didn't go

FuckThisWind · 09/03/2020 18:42

Give them a ring in the morning @itsnotjustflu

My surgery seemed to have me marked for some reason.

FuckThisWind · 09/03/2020 18:43

But they also mentioned that I was flagged up as having two long term health problems. (I do - the other being severely high BP)

I'm 48.

HasaDigaEebowai · 09/03/2020 18:48

Just to let people know Ive just been into home bargains (which was deserted). They had a shelf full of large sized hand sanitiser 500 ml for 99p but are rationing to 2 per customer. Annoyingly it doesn't have the alcohol content specified on the bottle and so I am assuming it could be under and adding some surgical spirit.

Business & Economic Impact

For anyone interested in the wider economic impact McKinsey have published a briefing note with their estimates of impact on GDP by region.

It shows best case (quick recovery like China) versus worst case (global pandemic, no quick recovery like China).

The worst case is pretty horrifying.

Full briefing note here: www.mckinsey.com/business-functions/risk/our-insights/covid-19-implications-for-business?cid=other-eml-alt-mip-mck&hlkid=0c9161c2e2ed44079b452c62336fdc0c&hctky=10059919&hdpid=5d2d919f-402a-4cc1-bb7f-cd772a29f8d0

I just cannot get my head round the fact the updated health advice is to self isolate from listed countries, yet at least 15 flights from Milan alone, have been allowed to land and disembark to the UK today with absolutely NO checks whatsoever.

Looking at various charts our trajectory is roughly 2 weeks behind Italy where just over 2 weeks ago they quarantined the initial villages, to the current situation.

It just beggars belief Shock

VenetoResident · 09/03/2020 18:52

Age range for deaths in Italy:
1% 50-59 yo
10% 60-69
31% 70-79
44% 80-89
13% >90

BanKittenHeels · 09/03/2020 18:57

Nipped into Waitrose earlier to get some rye flour to feed the sourdough starter (shelves all well stocked) and had to help an old guy ~ 80 decide which soap to buy. He was so glad when I told him bar soap was safe and then I had to get him to reassure me he had enough food in the house for 2/52 before I’d let him go. He told me has lots of lard for pastry making and his daughter made him 12 jars of jam last summer. He was so fragile looking, he reminded me of a relative who is older and currently has terminal AM leukaemia. I sat in my car and cried. Sorry if that’s a downer, I’m just absolutely dreading work and knowing how this is going to escalate.

Sorry to Nato, I promised I would overlay the Italy and U.K. dates and figures but I haven’t sat down for a second. Maybe tomorrow!

Our children didn’t go to school today.

FuckThisWind · 09/03/2020 19:01

Oh @BanKittenHeels hugs to you. It's all become so bloody real for some of us (and beyond for some of our friends in Italy etc)

Riv12345 · 09/03/2020 19:02

Just heard corona virus is in guernsey.

I'm due to go there on a cruise in May

Justmum89 · 09/03/2020 19:09

Italy's numbers are so worrying and I can see the UK on the same course in a couple of weeks.

I'm so sad that we already have 5 avoidable deaths at the hands of our government and their lack of response to this 😢 with many older family members it angers me that the lives of the elderly seem to be dismissed so disgustingly!

On another note I am so so sick of hearing the song "Happy Birthday". Everyone in my house seems to feel the need to sing it out loud, very loudly every time they wash their hands. 2 children and DH it's getting boring very quickly!!

hankyspanky · 09/03/2020 19:10

@BanKittenHeels Flowers

I sat and cried earlier after chatting to family and friends in Italy. It's not made any easier by my DM being over 150 miles away insisting its 'just the same as flu'. Luckily, my siblings live close to her and are able to keep a close eye on her.

just5morepeas · 09/03/2020 19:12

Well, I can only assume the government wants it to spread. My aunt rang 111 yesterday for a sore throat/temp and was told because she's not recently returned from abroad or has contact with anyone who has got it they're not testing.

She asked if she needed to self-isolate and was told no. So she's not going to.

hankyspanky · 09/03/2020 19:14

I wonder if it would make any difference if everyone phoning 111 for advice, when asked the question, "have you travelled to an infected country" replied, "I live in one'??

Puppycorn · 09/03/2020 19:18

Called 111 for advise today as the GP surgery won’t say the time or day when the confirmed case visited them. Dh visited pharmacy which is in the same block and was there exactly for 6 min on an evening early last week. Seems they don’t have any information about the time or date the person visited the surgery. The advise was to carry on as normal. Also a general advise that it spreads only if the exposure lasts more than 15 minutes and if they had touched surfaces. Call back them if anyone thinks they have symptoms.

sideorderofchips · 09/03/2020 19:19

@Riv12345 I'm in jersey and we are getting nervous of it coming here. 100000 people on an island 9 miles by 5.takes 72 hours for us to get test results. When it hits it will hit badly.

just5morepeas · 09/03/2020 19:21

Yes, the complacency is boggling. They know it's here already, I don't get the not-testing. Yes, she probably doesn't have it, but unless they test how can you know! And telling her not to isolate herself! Idgi.

FuckThisWind · 09/03/2020 19:26

Scary figs for Italy!

DD(8) has just come down with a water infection. I'll be keeping her off and hopefully getting docs appt / phone appt in morning (we were told last time that if it happened again, she would be put on daily antibiotics)

Upshot: pleased I am prepped. What with the phone call I've just had about my asthma, possible guidance coming out about people with mild respiratory illnesses self isolating and our governments utter ineptness. Looks like I might have to channel resources into myself and DD. And here was me thinking I'd be helping out my Mum with cancer and Dad with severe heart disease.

Sillyscrabblegames · 09/03/2020 19:26

Hello preppers. Has anyone got a good list of what to stock for self isolation? I just can't get my head to focus.

Rayn · 09/03/2020 19:28

It's so hard knowing what to do. We have all and a sore throat and bad cough for the last week in our house. We have to just presume it's a virus as we have not been travelling or in contact with anyone. Normally one of us gets a cough/cold but it's the firs time it has run through all six of us. Makes you wonder??

sideorderofchips · 09/03/2020 19:32

This is local denial.

Legoandloldolls · 09/03/2020 19:43

Dh is trying to get travel insurance before we start to pay the balance off. Insurance company has asked him to phone Tui to make sure that if the UK says "no flights in/ out of the UK in the 28 days" that TUI will cover the cost anyway.

Purely conjecture but I wonder how unlikely it would be? Even China didnt do that
