Prepping For Pandemic..... 11

Thread 11.

This prepping for a pandemic pack was posted one one of the previous threads, I thought I’d post for this thread as there’s more people joining the threads. I had a quick scan through the last couple of thread to find a list that’s been posted a few times but couldn’t find it. The pack seems a bit end of days in some parts buts it’s got some useful ideas.

Pandemic Preparedness Pack

The Emotional Prep thread started by @Neome might be worth a look for those of us feeling anxious as things ramp up.

Emotional Prep Thread

Also attached a screenshot of a post on previous threads by @blackeyesusan (hope you don’t mind) with storage ideas for those of us living in smaller homes.

Can anybody remember the naame of the zinc and vitamin c lozenge?

MinesaPinotPlease · 05/03/2020 22:49

@onetimeprepper

One type is Zincovit-C.

twitter.com/oliveblogs/status/1235491918844321792?s=19

I saw this on twitter and someone commented suggesting that it would be helpful posted here. It's a list of tips from a mum who quarantined her daughter's when they caught swine flu.

OneTimePrepper · 05/03/2020 22:59

@MinesaPinotPlease Thank you, thats the one I was trying to remember.

tryingtoprep · 05/03/2020 23:01

I'll rather be at home if I had a genuinely mild form. The worry is when hospitals have no capacity for those that do need beds. I assume Boris, if he caught it, would be found a bed. What if several senior MPs (or their families) caught it at the same time - when beds were at capacity? Do they think they're special and won't catch it?

@OneTimePrepper Can't remember the name but there were several different brands of zinc + C + propolis lozenges on Amazon last night. Not sure what's available now. You could try the throat sprays too.

GalOopNorth · 05/03/2020 23:22

My worry is mild can turn more serious, right? But nobody will be able to come and help, resources will be so stretched.

AlohaMolly · 05/03/2020 23:36

I budget really hard and although I’m technically prepped I think I’m going to use my disposable income on adding more. The anticipation is really getting to me.

SingingBabooshkaBadly · 05/03/2020 23:45

@GeistohneGrenzen thank you for posting the antibacterial gel link on the last thread. I’m in two minds really as I do have the alcohol free stuff that says it’s anti viral and I don’t want to take supplies away from someone who doesn’t have any at all. On the other hand I keep reading it has to be at least 60% alcohol. No doubt I’ll dither about and then decide to get some just as it goes out of stock 🙄🙄🙄

I’m feeling anxious - DH - older than me, Parkinson’s, pacemaker, minor respiratory issues - is going to meet a friend for lunch tomorrow. I don’t want him to go - eating out and mixing unnecessarily. On the other hand said friend is suffering from cancer, has been very depressed and wants to see him. I’d be a horrible person to try to stop him wouldn’t I?

Readyme · 05/03/2020 23:53

The anticipation is horrible. I'm trying to decide when I should do my next supermarket shop I suspect this weekend is going to be another busy one for supermarkets.
At the same time I don't feel I need enough to justify home delivery.

Effieray · 05/03/2020 23:53

Checking in. Thank you for new thread.

Had to go to school event this evening. Both myself and DC chose to wear black cotton gloves (which my DS immediately termed "serial killer gloves"!) No one else there wearing gloves or masks or seemingly taking any other precautions (we sat at the back.)

AlohaMolly · 05/03/2020 23:56

My DP is like what someone else described their DP as on the last thread. Really defensive and convinced it’s NOTHING. I’m trying to figure out when I make him listen because there’s a risk of a massive row sad]

I also am on the scout for offers etc so I can get a decent cheap top up stash shop delivered.

echobench · 05/03/2020 23:58

I would get DH to invite his friend round to your house, @SingingBabooshkaBadly. Sounds like both of them should be avoiding crowds.

SingingBabooshkaBadly · 06/03/2020 00:06

echobench he did invite him. His friend doesn’t feel his mental health is good enough to drive that far so DH offered to head over to him and pick him up and go to a pub local to friend. There are other issues that mean visiting at friend’s house is out.

I don’t like it 🙁

NutellaQuest · 06/03/2020 00:15

Thanks for the new thread. Have a good night all.

Legoandloldolls · 06/03/2020 00:21

Just watch ITV news at 10. I thought the presenter seemed a bit concerned. They keep saying 9-12 weeks but where are we now? Week 1?

I was a bit anxious yesterday but had coffee with my mate today and feel better, but sureal today. Like watching a movie.

Kids are blissfully unaware but washing their hands. I am prepped but yes I still feel like I haven't done enough. Also feel like I should try to help my mum asap.

RhubarbTea · 06/03/2020 00:29

I'm veering from totally anxious and full of dread to serene and having forgotten all about it (for short moments), the latter being a sort of short circuit in my brain where I just live my life normally and feel peaceful and calm until it all hits me again.

I still haven't managed to find any hand gel whatsoever, every single shop is sold out and many are now sold out of antibac handwash and lots of types of soap as well.

I'm a bit crap with change at the best of times and I just want life to go back to how it was, not sure when exactly that would be... before the Tories won the election? Before we realised climate change was a thing? This pandemic is coming at a bad time for me and it's hard not to feel real despair at times. DC and I are watching more comedy shows, laughing more, trying to play and relax and be silly wherever possible.

But I still really want to find some hand gel...

NatoPMT · 06/03/2020 00:29

@VenetoResident - thank you so much for even mentioning your bottle - that’s extremely thoughtful ❤️❤️ But I’m in London

I hope your boy improves very very soon, I’m sorry you’re going through this

Lol at serial killer gloves, I call them Murder Gloves

Husband got jolted up to date tonight by the news. Asked me to talk him through our cupboard and requested.... custard. He also realised what I’ve been up to since January

Finally agreed to discuss a strategy for his business and how we’d fund the closure. His suppliers will shut before he does at the last minute so he’s going to swap houses with his mum and while he’s working we will isolate at our house with her - just have to get her to agree now.

I’m still jittery and might need to switch off a bit to calm down for a day or two

Nighty night

JustMeAndMyTins · 06/03/2020 00:54

@NatoPMT that sounds like a good plan. All round - the husband, the mum collection and the switching off.

This made me laugh:

‘Asked me to talk him through our cupboard and requested.... custard.’

Firstly. I love that he wanted to be ‘talked through it’ but also, I bought custard powder too! It’s not a surprise to me that I like it but I cannot remember when I last would have eaten it and cannot recall ever buying it!

I had a weird moment in the shower where I slipped onto the ‘it’s just flu’ bandwagon and almost laughed at how silly I’d been. It was short-lived. I wish it had hung around - modified with my stash and copious amounts of hand gel of course. It was a really nice feeling.

Legoandloldolls · 06/03/2020 01:19

I was in a local garden centre today. They had personalised hand gels. Not sure what the alcohol content was? But I think they was £3 or maybe £2? I might pop back tomorrow and take a picture so people can look out for them.

If anyone is passing primark I bet they have have them in again at some point. Its 74% ethanolmand 80p for 100ml. Plus if they dont have any I highly recommend primark socks. Cheap. Shrink to a comedy size in the wash but they still fit and last well. Pretend your looking for socks ........both are at the tills.......

Have NC - and FUCK OFF DAILY MAIL

I feel almost ready, although I could do with more loo roll tbh. The freezer is full so this week's shop will be in the fridge for meat.

There are cases in the two towns next to us. Most of our town commute to London. Big drama tonight on the local FB group as a school is taking a group of children to Italy - very concerned parents, letters from the school screenshot onto the group, lots of its only flu, people pulling out of the trip, school refusing to refund those who have pulled out, parents of children not going getting mad at the school and saying their children will not be going back in once the trip children return - caused a bit of a hooha! Another local school has already canceled a trip at no cost to parents. It is only a matter of time really, but our council says it is pointless telling us where the cases are so we are relying on local media finding out. Friends who commute said tonight that there are people starting to wear masks on the tube now that there are loads of cases in London.

DH is unaware of preps but when he heard on the news that paracetamol was going to be in short supply because of China to India supply chains he did turn to me and say "hmm, get some?". In light of that, today I took a picture of our current stock and sent it to him. He immediately replied "Well it is eight per day per adult, and like you said if one of us gets it then all of us will. We need some more!" Tonight when I collected him we went to the local Asda and got the allowed two packets each. (one adult tablets and one calpol for the young ones who can't take tablets) He mentioned he will get some more tomorrow too Grin Baby steps! Grin

VenetoResident · 06/03/2020 01:43

No, 60 doesn't seem old to me, but it's frustrating that unless you're older and seriously ill you can't get tested. That means that lots of people are still using buses and trams and spreading the virus unnecessarily. Life here seems very very normal. We're not from the area so we don't really know many people aged above 50 never mind 60+

The only shortage I've noticed in shops here is hand gel.

Sorry @NatoPMT - I thought for some reason you were local. Was your friend local? Strangely wide awake tonight, tempted to try some for myself. Does it help much?

I had a day off yesterday and went for my normal supermarket shop.

It was quite odd in the large Tesco. No hand wash apart from a few bottles of expensive 'luxury' brands. No Detoll wipes. No bags of dried pasta (plenty of fresh in the fridge though). No cheap paracetamol or ibuprofen, only expensive branded packs. The bread didn't look as well stocked as normal. There was quite a queue at the in-store pharmacy.

At the moment I am trying shop as normal, not starting to use items I've got in stock I needed hand wash because I'm using far more than normal. Fortunately, I was meeting a friend in the garden centre for coffee and they had loads. Who would have thought of going to a garden centre for soap?!

To those who say it's just the flu: I am young and healthy but I had a dose of flu last year that knocked me out for about a week. I would not have been able to go shopping (even climbing the stairs to go to bed felt like I'd climbed a mountain and anyway, I wouldn't have wanted to spread germs). So, even if this is just the flu (it's not!), it still makes sense to be prepared.

When I was a student I worked in a supermarket during the petrol tanker driver strikes. In our store, there were a few nasty scenes when we had bread deliveries, and we had to have a police presence at our petrol station. Yesterday reminded me of those times so I'm glad I can avoid the shops if I need to over the next few weeks.

Well DH was in a foul mood last night! I made a comment about the bus not being as busy as usual yesterday - normally we don't get a seat but it was half empty. Don't know if people are actively avoiding the bus or the weather was so bad no kids were hanging around and they took the earlier bus. DH didn't book his parking spot early enough and now only has one day parking next week. So he's going to go in person and ask today. So he'll either have to bike the 30+ km each way or take the bus and a very busy train.

Our school has the official posters up, children have been spoken to, had lessons on the virus etc. I went to another school yesterday and nothing. No posters anywhere, kids were coughing and sneezing without covering. One grandmother was telling her GD she was too ill to go to an after school activity - surely if she's too ill for that, then she's too ill for school!
