Prepping For A Pandemic ....9

ItsNotJustTheFuckingFlu · 01/03/2020 23:57

wheresmojo asked at the end of thread eight if other posters could keep an eye on threads filling up and start new ones if possible as she’s busy this week and may not have the time, saw thread 8 getting full so thought would start number 9 before going to bed. Thank you to ofwarren for the live updates too. I’ve copied and pasted the info that wheresmymojo has included in every thread, hopefully formatting doesn’t mess up.

Anxiety

As Preppers we tend to look at a reasonable worst case scenario to plan for. Everyone is welcome on the thread but if you find it makes you anxious be kind to yourself and think about sticking to once daily updates from the BBC or similar thanks Flowers

General COVID Info

The estimated replication rate is R= 2 to 4 based on latest expert estimates. This means each infected person spreads the virus to between 2 and 4 people. Experts estimate that, unchecked, it could infect 60% of the population.

Around 15-20% of cases are thought to be severe - that is resulting in the need for hospitalisation. Around 3-5% requiring ventilation.

The estimated mortality rate is around 1-2% at the moment (compared to 0.01-0.1% for flu). This may change as it is very difficult to estimate mortality.

Children tend to have milder symptoms. Those over 60 with underlying health issues and a history of smoking are more likely to be severe (although not exclusively this type of person).

Spread of COVID

It is estimated that the average incubation period is 3-5 days but can be as long as 24 days.

It can be spread with no symptoms.

It can be spread via droplet (cough/sneeze), aerosol (breathing same air in very close quarters), bodily fluids, fecal/oral route and formites (via surfaces, up to 28 days in the right circumstances but up to 3-5 days in more typical circumstances).

Updates

As this is a novel virus and knowledge is constantly being updated - I will post updates as they become available with links to source.

I am not a medical expert so any opinions or conjecture of my own should be taken with a pinch of salt!

Prepping Scenarios

Most of us are prepping for the following situations:

  • Wanting to stay indoors for 2-4 weeks + in case of a local outbreak / schools being closed
  • Potentially being ill with a flu type illness lasting 2-3 weeks with one or more of the household having the illness
  • Having to take a family member to hospital for COVID or any other reason during an outbreak

Prepping Items

Threads 1&2 have lists of things to think about to prep for the first scenario as do the Brexit prepping threads.

Main differences/additions to something like the Brexit list are:

  • Face masks if you can get them for any trips you have to make in public during an outbreak. These don't offer full protection and cannot be 100% relied upon but are probably better than nothing if you make sure you wear them correctly and dispose of them correctly. N95 masks are best but expensive and harder to wear, surgical face masks are second best. Dust masks are not going to help.
  • Hand sanitiser needs to be 60% or more alcohol content
  • Dettol / bleach / Miltons to disinfect. Not all disinfectants work but these three do
  • Plenty of at home/over counter treatments for flu type symptoms should you need to treat at home
  • Tissues (lots of) should you catch the virus
  • Think about meals that are easy to cook and eat should you be ill or both parents be ill at the same time (soup for example)
  • For a potential hospital trip you may want to prep a 'go bag' should you need to take someone to hospital with the virus (or anything else) during an outbreak. See Thread 1&2 for examples of what people are packing
  • Frequent and thorough hand washing, not touching your face and social distancing (no handshakes, hugs, etc) are some of the most effective ways to stay virus free

Other Thoughts

India have announced that they are stopping exports of some antibiotics, hormone treatments and vitamin supplements as they rely on China for raw materials.

Many factories that supplied fibre for use in sanitary towels and tampons are being diverted to manufacture face masks. Consider stocking up or changing to sustainable items (cloth STs, mooncup, period pants)

If you bulk buy hand gel with a high alcohol content make sure it is stored somewhere safe other than the one you’re using. It is flammable!

@MissusMaker his older brother is 17 and at college but there are only 11 in his class and he is great at hygiene as he's used to it with his brothers condition.
He has a younger brother too who has just turned 4. He was in nursery 2 days a week which I have cancelled.

BiddyPop · 02/03/2020 09:57

Thanks both Puppy and Babooshka for the powdered milk recommendations. I had thought I would cancel a planned day off on Friday as DD is also on an in service day from school, but maybe I will take it after all and just go up north instead (to Banbridge or Lisburn for the large Sainsburys there - and Banbridge outlet as well).

BridgeToTerabithia · 02/03/2020 09:57

You do not have to give six weeks notice to dereg? You can literally do it the same Fay.
Or did I read that wrong? But either way, you don't need to.

SingingBabooshkaBadly · 02/03/2020 09:58

I know a lot of posters have said they are pretty much done with their preps but for anyone planning an online shop who hasn’t previously used Ocado it’s worth noting they are currently offering new customers 30% off their first shop on a minimum spend of £60 (up to a maximum discount of £25) with three months free delivery. Here’s the voucher code.

I'm of the general opinion that, health issues and where there have been specific cases aside, it isn't probably the point to be keeping children off school.
If it does come to the point where you have teenagers at home though, I would recommend taking a look at CGP mathsbusters.
I'm a private tutor and honestly don't work for them or anything!
There is a Foundation GCSE and Higher GCSE version. Because of the linear nature of the maths syllabus I think the foundation version can be useful for average ability upwards from year 8 ( set it to level 3 for year 8)
It is an online learning system. When you pay you get a login so all completely remote. For £13 you get videos and written explanations of individual topics and practice questions. You can also work through questions on a level by level basis and try challenges. If you had a DC in isolation and could get them to do even 30 mins a day it would really help their maths while they are off.
It does sometimes need graph paper to work out questions but you can find versions online to print off.

Whatthefoxgoingon · 02/03/2020 10:06

Morning all. Does anyone know if there will be news after the COBRA meeting?

ofwarren · 02/03/2020 10:07

Maybe you do in a private school bridge?

Puppycorn · 02/03/2020 10:12

@BiddyPop I would suggest you also order some online (what if you pop in to the large shop and don’t find any there? If you can’t physically visit more than one shop then you might miss it. But ordering them online earlier would mean that you will be able to buy) Ocado stock them too and @Singingbabooshka has kindly shared the coupon anyways

RhubarbTea · 02/03/2020 10:12

I also home educate and am very happy to answer questions if anyone wants info. You don't need to give 6 weeks notice, not in England anyway where I am. You just give the school a letter or email informing them of your choice to home educate and that's it. Done and dusted. Some will quibble or ask you to come in for a meeting but you are under no obligation to do so. Ditto if they try and argue or persuade you.

Khan Academy is pretty decent for maths stuff and it's all free.

I'm feeling quite tense today. The urge to go out and buy up the whole supermarket is strong! I'm going to go and get a few more items today, and try and be slow and steady with my prepping. I've got my Mob Kitchen and Tin Can Cook cookbooks out for recipe inspiration....

WeBuiltCisCityOnSexistRoles · 02/03/2020 10:13

I would think so, and hope so fox!

I have (long standing) respiratory issues and immune system. DH has said he would be more comfortable if didn't go out at the moment (but he wouldn't tell me not to, my choice Wink) so I'm weighing it up.

I have DC at different schools/colleges/workplaces so I take the view they are more likely to pass it on at home, but I do see where he is coming from. But this could go on for months, do I stay in for that long?. But then again, if a DC of mine were in the same situation I would be tying them to the sofa! It's very hard to make a decision. Interested to know what other people think.

(We have done what we can at home, lots of discussion of hand hygiene and cleaning surfaces, no hugging/kissing. And I certainly have enough food in not to need to leave the house forvever for the next few weeks Grin)

lemonjumper · 02/03/2020 10:15

Or did I read that wrong? But either way, you don't need to.

I don't know the situation of the person you are replying to but in Scotland, if your child is already enrolled in a public school, you have to seek permission to withdraw from the local authority. The process takes around 6 weeks.

Puppycorn · 02/03/2020 10:17

Also please can someone explain what are the rules regarding homeschooling dd? She is in reception (sep born) and I cannot find any information in homeschooling boards about what are the procedures and how to go about de registering / consequences etc. She is our only dd born after 8 years of trying so we are growing very concerned day by day.

Humina · 02/03/2020 10:19

Everything pretty much normal in our Lidl, apart from hand gel has completely disappeared. Stock levels fine for everything else. Got some packet rice and the filtered milk (their version of Cravendale) as it lasts a bit longer and no one likes UHT here.

planningaheadtoday · 02/03/2020 10:21

@MinesaPinotPlease
I could have written your post!

About two weeks ago I ended up bartering with mine and agreed to pay for everything (I was going to anyway) if he got the items on the list I'd sent him.

It worked, he shopped and posted me pictures of his haul. Including a PPF3 filter mask and goggles.

He is fit and well but he's a hazard if he brings home this virus as two in our household are 60+ with other significant conditions.

I think the vast majority of uni students haven't given prep a thought.

HalfaMillion · 02/03/2020 10:21

@Heartyhooker thanks for the info about ILkley Grammar. Wish all the other local schools would put minds at rest too

ofwarren · 02/03/2020 10:21

I bet that's what it is then lemonjumper they are most likely Scottish.

BridgeToTerabithia · 02/03/2020 10:31

Apologies I should have said that I was referring in England. Sorry.

What time.is the cobra meeting?

MoonlightMistletoe · 02/03/2020 10:33

Copied from an article from ITV

"If the government really wants to contain or delay the spread of coronavirus, then it will have to find proper money to compensate those who do the right thing by not working.
And also compensate businesses that can’t trade because they lack a sufficient number of virus-free staff. It won’t be cheap."

t.co/41GG4EKwPf

Am I right to think the gov haven't acted sooner because it will be costly ?

What time is the COBRA meeting does anyone know?

Puppycorn · 02/03/2020 10:35

@RhubarbTea Personally I would like my daughter to attend school once this virus thing calms down so if we de register now , can we re-apply again next academic year? It’s mainly for her social well being. Me and dh are both post grads and I am confident I can educate her well at home if need be (infact me and dh were discussing this option because dd is very soft and girly-girly by nature and we were worried about bullying and stuffs that might happen at school etc when dh suggested if it’s bad he would take her off and homeschool or move back to India and put her in Montessori or international school)

What are the best online schools if any for primary aged children? Also once when I was discussing options some parent said it’s “compulsory school age” and you just can’t homeschool as and when you want. Is that true?

BridgeToTerabithia · 02/03/2020 10:36

Also Shock at Iran. 523!!

Heartyhooker · 02/03/2020 10:37

@HalfaMillion primary have sent an update as well , but then Headmaster has a PhD in microbiology.

FourTeaFallOut · 02/03/2020 10:37

She is our only dd born after 8 years of trying so we are growing very concerned day by day.

She's your child. You could take her out today and ring the LA tomorrow and sort out the admin later. I'm not recommending that you do but she doesn't have to work her notice.

HasaDigaEebowai · 02/03/2020 10:39

She is our only dd born after 8 years of trying so we are growing very concerned day by day

That's an odd thing to say. I get pregnant at the drop of a hat and have more than one child but I'm still really concerned about both (even though I have a spare!) Confused
