Prepping For A Pandemic ....9

ItsNotJustTheFuckingFlu · 01/03/2020 23:57

wheresmojo asked at the end of thread eight if other posters could keep an eye on threads filling up and start new ones if possible as she’s busy this week and may not have the time, saw thread 8 getting full so thought would start number 9 before going to bed. Thank you to ofwarren for the live updates too. I’ve copied and pasted the info that wheresmymojo has included in every thread, hopefully formatting doesn’t mess up.

Anxiety

As Preppers we tend to look at a reasonable worst case scenario to plan for. Everyone is welcome on the thread but if you find it makes you anxious be kind to yourself and think about sticking to once daily updates from the BBC or similar thanks Flowers

General COVID Info

The estimated replication rate is R= 2 to 4 based on latest expert estimates. This means each infected person spreads the virus to between 2 and 4 people. Experts estimate that, unchecked, it could infect 60% of the population.

Around 15-20% of cases are thought to be severe - that is resulting in the need for hospitalisation. Around 3-5% requiring ventilation.

The estimated mortality rate is around 1-2% at the moment (compared to 0.01-0.1% for flu). This may change as it is very difficult to estimate mortality.

Children tend to have milder symptoms. Those over 60 with underlying health issues and a history of smoking are more likely to be severe (although not exclusively this type of person).

Spread of COVID

It is estimated that the average incubation period is 3-5 days but can be as long as 24 days.

It can be spread with no symptoms.

It can be spread via droplet (cough/sneeze), aerosol (breathing same air in very close quarters), bodily fluids, fecal/oral route and formites (via surfaces, up to 28 days in the right circumstances but up to 3-5 days in more typical circumstances).

Updates

As this is a novel virus and knowledge is constantly being updated - I will post updates as they become available with links to source.

I am not a medical expert so any opinions or conjecture of my own should be taken with a pinch of salt!

Prepping Scenarios

Most of us are prepping for the following situations:

  • Wanting to stay indoors for 2-4 weeks + in case of a local outbreak / schools being closed
  • Potentially being ill with a flu type illness lasting 2-3 weeks with one or more of the household having the illness
  • Having to take a family member to hospital for COVID or any other reason during an outbreak

Prepping Items

Threads 1&2 have lists of things to think about to prep for the first scenario as do the Brexit prepping threads.

Main differences/additions to something like the Brexit list are:

  • Face masks if you can get them for any trips you have to make in public during an outbreak. These don't offer full protection and cannot be 100% relied upon but are probably better than nothing if you make sure you wear them correctly and dispose of them correctly. N95 masks are best but expensive and harder to wear, surgical face masks are second best. Dust masks are not going to help.
  • Hand sanitiser needs to be 60% or more alcohol content
  • Dettol / bleach / Miltons to disinfect. Not all disinfectants work but these three do
  • Plenty of at home/over counter treatments for flu type symptoms should you need to treat at home
  • Tissues (lots of) should you catch the virus
  • Think about meals that are easy to cook and eat should you be ill or both parents be ill at the same time (soup for example)
  • For a potential hospital trip you may want to prep a 'go bag' should you need to take someone to hospital with the virus (or anything else) during an outbreak. See Thread 1&2 for examples of what people are packing
  • Frequent and thorough hand washing, not touching your face and social distancing (no handshakes, hugs, etc) are some of the most effective ways to stay virus free

Other Thoughts

India have announced that they are stopping exports of some antibiotics, hormone treatments and vitamin supplements as they rely on China for raw materials.

Many factories that supplied fibre for use in sanitary towels and tampons are being diverted to manufacture face masks. Consider stocking up or changing to sustainable items (cloth STs, mooncup, period pants)

If you bulk buy hand gel with a high alcohol content make sure it is stored somewhere safe other than the one you’re using. It is flammable!

I think my dds are worried.
one of whom is at uni, first year
i tried to allay her fears.

Skyejuly · 02/03/2020 08:04

Both my teenagers are dismissive of the seriousness of the issue. Winds me up

Blueberryham · 02/03/2020 08:05

So Matt Hancock is saying now that they can’t rule out cancelling large events, shitting down schools and quarantining cities. This makes me both reassured and worried. They are starting to take it more seriously

ooopsupsideyourhead · 02/03/2020 08:05

DH works for a large multi-national French company here in the UK. This morning all employees have been sent an email (in French) about self isolation and working from hone for anyone who comes from one of the nine affected towns/villages. It also reinforces hygiene. Most employees in the UK aren’t French speaking - but it’s certainly made them sit up an notice ~including DH~

I'm so angry at myself for going into so many supermarkets at the weekend especially because I didn't have the balls to wear a mask.
I have Lots of deliveries coming over the next 48h (home ed and birthday stuff for DD) after that we are bugging in.

For those considering home education but have to give 6 weeks notice consider joining an online school technically you have just moved schools. There is one that does monthly contracts you could sign up once the 6 weeks are up you could cancel.

For those with kids newly turned 5 you should be able to immediately withdraw its the term After they are 5 years old that compulsory education which for kids newly 5 would be after Easter.

Best place to check for that sort of advice is regional FB home ed groups

EnidBlyton · 02/03/2020 08:06

I must say I think they have Always taken it seriously but there is no point in panicking.

AlohaMolly · 02/03/2020 08:08

DP is self employed so doesn’t have work emails etc and he’s a stubborn, authority resisting bastard at times.

Puppycorn · 02/03/2020 08:08

@NatoPMT My dd is sep born so I don’t think the school would allow that. As I said the school is so strict so received an email that authorising absences won’t be done unless it’s sickness or grievance (with proof ) it seems . closing the school isn’t going to be done anytime sooner either. A worried mum here. Also it’s very scary to think if someone gets ill. I am at a high risk group. Today I’m planning to sort out the laundry and wash up all the essentials needed for the hospital bag. Mum and dad are already pressurising us to travel back home after they have seen the news etc India has recorded only 3 cases so far and the medical care is better than Nhs. (Plus chloroquine is available even in a corner shop - which is currently being tested) I am the one who is putting it off as I feel airports are high risk now.

I'm wondering if it is worth being careful now about buying loose unpackaged food?
Loose fruit has something like an average of 20 types of cosmetic traces on it.... we only buy packaged foods now!

If Lego is a hit, how about the more technical Lego or something like Meccano?

Interesting at the bus stop today. Not possible to keep a 2m difference from everyone. Never noticed before how far people's breath goes - there were a couple of smokers so you could see. I assume everyone else's breath follows the same trajectory but as there's no smoke you don't see it. You could go crazy thinking about this stuff!
One guy was carrying a pack of tissues, put it down to get one mini pack out and blew his nose. The woman next to him surreptitiously pulled her scarf over her mouth and nose!
Saw several people shake hands, even though it's been advised not to.
One person wearing a mask.

I opted for putting my bag on the seat so no one could sit next to me Blush

We’ve had issues with DS’ school (he’s 4 in May so no legal obligation to be there anyway) and we’ve taken him out as of Wednesday last week with the idea of putting him into a different school/nursery, but I’m going to hold off until easter maybe...

BiddyPop · 02/03/2020 08:10

DH, having been watching everything much closer than me but not worried for weeks, has suddenly hit “its inevitable and we will be quarantined” mindset. So has a few things he wants us to keep topped up (fresh milk etc).

Coincidentally I did a large supermarket shop on Friday night including extra stores items. Lots is still in the car until I have a quiet house tomorrow to stash it away.

But you cAnt find powdered milk here at all. I’m regretting having thrown out the old carton (which was out of date a couple of years and had been open for a long time) in my late summer clear out. I have a tin of evaporated milk and a carton of almond milk to try if necessary.

MoonlightMistletoe · 02/03/2020 08:11

I'm keeping my son off nursery today, he has already got a cough and recently recovered from chicken pox so I do not feel comfortable sending him in. It's not panic it's taking the situation seriously and preventing where I can.

Anyone else feel angry ? It should never have come to this and I am dreading the numbers today.

Flyingsouthwiththeswallows · 02/03/2020 08:13

I am already trying to avoid precooked / uncooked food Effieray. So far I have just been testing my ability to deal without things like Bread, salads, fruit etc.

However, I am not worrying about Veg etc that will be cooked. Essential for me as a Vegetarian.

I am also assuming that things like biscuits, butter, cheese etc which are factory packed, should be safe.

It is relatively easy not to eat out, but I will need to improve my bread baking skills and may start growing some salads once the frosts have gone.

Heartyhooker · 02/03/2020 08:14

Just had an email from Ilkley Grammar confirming the case announced yesterday has no direct link with them, which is a little reassuring. Have yet again gone over hand washing technique and told ds1 he is on packed lunches for the foreseeable future, and regretting putting a month's worth of money on parentpay. However, he has packed lunch with a small group of friends and doesn't sit in the main hall. Have resolved not to worry until someone panic buys the hundred pound plus Easter egg in Bettys window

Vodkaskirts · 02/03/2020 08:14

Well I live next but 1 town to Bury
On my bus commute to work traffic is terrible. I thought or hoped it would be a little quieter
I had to top up my bus card bus driver has his mitts all over it
I cleaned it my hands and my phone
Then I coughed inti my hand realised what I had done coughed into my scarf next.
And I have a itchy snotty nose that I gave touches twice only realising after I've been on the bus 15 mins

I need to start really concentrating on what I am doing as I dont have much hand gel

A previous poster suggested getting an essential oil diffuser to help with congestion so I ordered one from Amazon and a selection of oils. It arrived yesterday and I had it on for a few hours, using a combination of orange and bergamot oil. When I went to bed I could breathe a bit better ( have sinus issues). So that's something worth thinking about getting to help relieve symptoms.

Makes the room smell nice too!

Puppycorn · 02/03/2020 08:50

@BiddyPop Have you tried online? It’s called “marvel” original dried skimmed milk in Sainsbury’s/Tesco/Ocado and “nestle nido” is available. There was also this full cream milk powder from fudco - local Indian shop and online.

WorriedMam2020 · 02/03/2020 08:51

@AlohaMolly I’ve seen that too on FB and can’t believe how stupid people are being - exactly what @ofwarren says. It’s the start of it emerging here and it’s only going to get worse
