Prepping For A Pandemic ....9

ItsNotJustTheFuckingFlu · 01/03/2020 23:57

wheresmojo asked at the end of thread eight if other posters could keep an eye on threads filling up and start new ones if possible as she’s busy this week and may not have the time, saw thread 8 getting full so thought would start number 9 before going to bed. Thank you to ofwarren for the live updates too. I’ve copied and pasted the info that wheresmymojo has included in every thread, hopefully formatting doesn’t mess up.

Anxiety

As Preppers we tend to look at a reasonable worst case scenario to plan for. Everyone is welcome on the thread but if you find it makes you anxious be kind to yourself and think about sticking to once daily updates from the BBC or similar thanks Flowers

General COVID Info

The estimated replication rate is R= 2 to 4 based on latest expert estimates. This means each infected person spreads the virus to between 2 and 4 people. Experts estimate that, unchecked, it could infect 60% of the population.

Around 15-20% of cases are thought to be severe - that is resulting in the need for hospitalisation. Around 3-5% requiring ventilation.

The estimated mortality rate is around 1-2% at the moment (compared to 0.01-0.1% for flu). This may change as it is very difficult to estimate mortality.

Children tend to have milder symptoms. Those over 60 with underlying health issues and a history of smoking are more likely to be severe (although not exclusively this type of person).

Spread of COVID

It is estimated that the average incubation period is 3-5 days but can be as long as 24 days.

It can be spread with no symptoms.

It can be spread via droplet (cough/sneeze), aerosol (breathing same air in very close quarters), bodily fluids, fecal/oral route and formites (via surfaces, up to 28 days in the right circumstances but up to 3-5 days in more typical circumstances).

Updates

As this is a novel virus and knowledge is constantly being updated - I will post updates as they become available with links to source.

I am not a medical expert so any opinions or conjecture of my own should be taken with a pinch of salt!

Prepping Scenarios

Most of us are prepping for the following situations:

  • Wanting to stay indoors for 2-4 weeks + in case of a local outbreak / schools being closed
  • Potentially being ill with a flu type illness lasting 2-3 weeks with one or more of the household having the illness
  • Having to take a family member to hospital for COVID or any other reason during an outbreak

Prepping Items

Threads 1&2 have lists of things to think about to prep for the first scenario as do the Brexit prepping threads.

Main differences/additions to something like the Brexit list are:

  • Face masks if you can get them for any trips you have to make in public during an outbreak. These don't offer full protection and cannot be 100% relied upon but are probably better than nothing if you make sure you wear them correctly and dispose of them correctly. N95 masks are best but expensive and harder to wear, surgical face masks are second best. Dust masks are not going to help.
  • Hand sanitiser needs to be 60% or more alcohol content
  • Dettol / bleach / Miltons to disinfect. Not all disinfectants work but these three do
  • Plenty of at home/over counter treatments for flu type symptoms should you need to treat at home
  • Tissues (lots of) should you catch the virus
  • Think about meals that are easy to cook and eat should you be ill or both parents be ill at the same time (soup for example)
  • For a potential hospital trip you may want to prep a 'go bag' should you need to take someone to hospital with the virus (or anything else) during an outbreak. See Thread 1&2 for examples of what people are packing
  • Frequent and thorough hand washing, not touching your face and social distancing (no handshakes, hugs, etc) are some of the most effective ways to stay virus free

Other Thoughts

India have announced that they are stopping exports of some antibiotics, hormone treatments and vitamin supplements as they rely on China for raw materials.

Many factories that supplied fibre for use in sanitary towels and tampons are being diverted to manufacture face masks. Consider stocking up or changing to sustainable items (cloth STs, mooncup, period pants)

If you bulk buy hand gel with a high alcohol content make sure it is stored somewhere safe other than the one you’re using. It is flammable!

Local high school here just send a fb message saying a parent has tested positive so are closing until friday

Puppycorn · 03/03/2020 13:17

Wired U.K. has an article about will school closures stop coronavirus? It also has the link to the guidance associated with “influenza pandemic preparedness strategy” which was quoted because of the vagueness about when head teachers should decide the closure of the schools. Read the guidance and have copied it below -

Source: link from wired U.K. to a pdf for the same - apple.news/Ayff-omjgTGmrRSJrSzUsLg

School closures
4.23 There is modelling data highlighting the potential benefit of school closures in certain circumstances15, both in terms of protecting individual children from infection and in reducing overall transmission of the virus in the population. However, to be effective prolonged closures are required. This would involve schools over a wide area, but carries a risk that social mixing of children outside school would defeat the object of the closures.
4.24 However, under some circumstances head teachers (and their Boards of Governors where relevant) may take the decision to close individual establishments temporarily. Such closures should be guided by the following planning principles:
• Using a precautionary approach in the early stages of an influenza pandemic and depending on the public health risk assessment, Directors of Public Health may advise localised closures (individual schools or catchment areas). The purpose would be to reduce the initial spread of infection locally while gathering more information about the spread of the virus.
14 Impact of mass gatherings on an influenza pandemic. Scientific Evidence Base Review 2011
15 House T, Baguelin M, van Hoek AJ, White PJ, Sadique Z, Eames K, Read JM, Hens N, Melegaro A, Edmunds WJ, MJ Keeling. Modelling the impact of local reactive school closures on critical care provision during an influenza pandemic. Proceedings of the Royal Society series B (in press).
39

UK Influenza Pandemic Preparedness Strategy 2011
• Once the virus is more established in the country, the general policy would be that schools should not close – unless there are specific local business continuity reasons (staff shortages or particularly vulnerable children). This policy will be reviewed in light of information about how the pandemic is unfolding at the time.
4.25 The impact of closure of schools and similar settings on all sectors would have substantial economic and social consequences, and have a disproportionately large effect on health and social care because of the demographic profile of those employed in these sectors. Such a step would therefore only be taken in an influenza pandemic with a very high impact and so, although school closures cannot be ruled out, it should not be the primary focus of schools’ planning.

I think it is going to keep going up, because it's already out there and they are just playing catchup. Like most countries right now. Sad

WeBuiltCisCityOnSexistRoles · 03/03/2020 13:17

@ofwarren I worried my post sounded a bit patronising when I had pressed post. Blush

One thing that did infuriate me is that total lack of specifics. There are (I think) specific policies that should be put into place right now eg

•People on ZHC unable to work (or low income families etc) assured they will receive appropriate universal credit now as soon as they claim, not making them wait five weeks
•In the same vein, full wages/SSP/unpaid first days issue needs resolving - I can see how small companies could be sent under by this but workers without any money will also tank the economy. The government need to address this FFS.
•confirmation that people who remove DC to home educate for a period will have school places kept open (this could be a set time)
•I would also like to see restrictions announced about people buying up shelves of hand sanitiser etc. This should be addressed right now and isn't hard to do - supermarkets already say when there are special offers on "limited to two purchases per customer"'etc

They are just a couple off the top of my head. We just need more specific actions and details in general! I am going to channel my anger and frustration and contact my MP and I think as many people as possible should do this to get our voices heard. (I am going to ask specific questions like the above and press for answers).

(I'm also a bit of a fan of direct action like protesting in streets but A. This would be a large gathering and I should avoid and B. It has potential to kick off if we do this

SouthWestmom · 03/03/2020 13:17

Hi, I've given in and actually bought some stuff. Was in Morrisons today and there was no hand gel (was looking for soap for sink) at all - took me a while to realise what the huge gap was !

So I heard the statement from BJ and thought what a load of waffle.

I've bought six litres water, toothbrushes and paste, cereal and UHT milk, tissues, painkillers and biscuits, tinned beans, bleach.

I think I'm thinking if we have to be inside for a while or if people panic buy?

Hope this is the right thread

Sassenach85 · 03/03/2020 13:25

I think someone mentioned this, but dh was telling me he was chatting to a guy who has built robotic machines to make face masks but they can’t use these new robots as the materials they need come from China!

I’m honestly feeling more and more like I should be doing something I just don’t know what

Dds school have asked every child to go with a pack, tissues, hand gel and hand wash. I can’t find one bottle of hand gel.

I should have seen that coming and i didn’t and now I feel worried I should be preparing for something I just don’t know what

Puppycorn · 03/03/2020 13:28

@Noeuf Local uncommon shops like the range etc have sold out of handgels. I think it’s good to be little prepared than being caught without the basics. I have bought the things I might anyways use so it’s more like forward buying for 2-3 weeks. I don’t want to stockpile for longer and deprive others who might be in need but that’s just me because Yesterday I saw people buying lots more than usual in their carts.. that made me wonder if it’s panic buying or is it because it’s pay day.. I had no idea.

LightofMine · 03/03/2020 13:32

@WeBuiltCisCityOnSexistRoles

We definitely need clarification on income and sick pay for people wfh / zero hours / self employed / unemployed etc. Will they pay people who have lost their income and don't qualify for sick pay or cant attend job centres?

I would also like them to confirm how many empty ICU beds we have ready and on standby for the increasing demand Hmm.

itsnotjustflu · 03/03/2020 13:34

@lurnene I've looked at it online but it seems to include fresh ingredients as well?

RedLentilYellowLentil · 03/03/2020 13:34

Oh dear, once again, Britain is in denial. I guess we thought our sovereign pride would stop the coronavirus in its tracks at our sainted borders. I think we will be on to the next phase very soon and not long after that the shit will hit the fan for people who haven't been using the time we had wisely.

I feel sorry for all the people still believing the 'Don't panic, Mr Mainwaring' nonsense. Anyone would think the government will be delivering three hot meals a day to anyone off sick, when in reality there won't even be sick pay or benefits for a lot of people.

Wash your hands to the national anthem ffs. Angry

ItsNotJustTheFuckingFlu · 03/03/2020 13:35

I know we are tend towards the Worry end of the scale on this thread would you lot be fearful (please be honest!) if you saw me out and about?

It's horrible isn't it, I have similar symptoms from my lung condition and the embarrassment from the wet coughing men's I avoid going out because people do look and people do judge even before all this CV stuff.

I know this makes me sound like a total hypocrite but I think I would be a bit "uh oh" in my own head if I heard anyone coughing a lot, but if I saw you covering mouth and managing your hygiene I wouldn't be fearful and I'd not stare and tut at you because I know how that feels myself. It's shit.

itsnotjustflu · 03/03/2020 13:36

chap in a local group I'm in has just admitted he went in 12 shops looking for hand gel. Finally found some in Lidl and bought 10! FFS How does that help when the town is nearly out. Good job I bought mine weeks ago ;)

SouthWestmom · 03/03/2020 13:45

puppy corn

It's tricky isn't it? I just don't want to be the sensible one who ends up starving because everyone else has bought everything they can find!

When BJ said about how studies showed people tended to be helpful/altruistic I just thought what planet is he on? Round here they all seem to have bought everything (not much frozen stuff left) and worried about themselves!

FelicityFebruary · 03/03/2020 13:48

All very good points tryingtoprep.

Puppycorn · 03/03/2020 13:50

@itsnotjustflu If they can’t get hand gel it’s enough they get liquid soap. The Sainsbury’s aisle yesterday was empty of all Anti-Bacterial hand gels (which I’m sure is no good than soap as they are anti bacterial not anti viral) but all the soaps were full. I also couldn’t buy my usual glycerol dry cough syrup covonia dry and tickly (I often get throat dryness and real bad dry coughs because of diabetes) because people have panic bought them I think. Thankfully I had one at home. Almost many of my usual normal things were substituted in Ocado order so I had to request refund and order it in Sainsbury’s .

#Why #are #you #using #hashtags?

Skyejuly · 03/03/2020 13:55

It's from Twitter....

Effieray · 03/03/2020 13:55

Liverpool Echo:

A Wirral school has been closed after a parent of a pupil tested positive for coronavirus.
Hilbre High school in West Kirby has today been closed after it was revealed that the infected parent attended the school yesterday, before it was known they had contracted the virus.._

SuckingDieselFella · 03/03/2020 13:57

#Yes I #know hashtags are from #twitter but they don't #work on a #forum, do they?

savethecat · 03/03/2020 13:57

The wirral case is actually a stepmum and apparently the lad only goes to her place occasionally but did go while she has been infected.

Effieray · 03/03/2020 13:59

The person updating us from Twitter is doing an amazing job and copies and pastes the tweets.
