Prepping For A Pandemic ....9

ItsNotJustTheFuckingFlu · 01/03/2020 23:57

wheresmojo asked at the end of thread eight if other posters could keep an eye on threads filling up and start new ones if possible as she’s busy this week and may not have the time, saw thread 8 getting full so thought would start number 9 before going to bed. Thank you to ofwarren for the live updates too. I’ve copied and pasted the info that wheresmymojo has included in every thread, hopefully formatting doesn’t mess up.

Anxiety

As Preppers we tend to look at a reasonable worst case scenario to plan for. Everyone is welcome on the thread but if you find it makes you anxious be kind to yourself and think about sticking to once daily updates from the BBC or similar thanks Flowers

General COVID Info

The estimated replication rate is R= 2 to 4 based on latest expert estimates. This means each infected person spreads the virus to between 2 and 4 people. Experts estimate that, unchecked, it could infect 60% of the population.

Around 15-20% of cases are thought to be severe - that is resulting in the need for hospitalisation. Around 3-5% requiring ventilation.

The estimated mortality rate is around 1-2% at the moment (compared to 0.01-0.1% for flu). This may change as it is very difficult to estimate mortality.

Children tend to have milder symptoms. Those over 60 with underlying health issues and a history of smoking are more likely to be severe (although not exclusively this type of person).

Spread of COVID

It is estimated that the average incubation period is 3-5 days but can be as long as 24 days.

It can be spread with no symptoms.

It can be spread via droplet (cough/sneeze), aerosol (breathing same air in very close quarters), bodily fluids, fecal/oral route and formites (via surfaces, up to 28 days in the right circumstances but up to 3-5 days in more typical circumstances).

Updates

As this is a novel virus and knowledge is constantly being updated - I will post updates as they become available with links to source.

I am not a medical expert so any opinions or conjecture of my own should be taken with a pinch of salt!

Prepping Scenarios

Most of us are prepping for the following situations:

  • Wanting to stay indoors for 2-4 weeks + in case of a local outbreak / schools being closed
  • Potentially being ill with a flu type illness lasting 2-3 weeks with one or more of the household having the illness
  • Having to take a family member to hospital for COVID or any other reason during an outbreak

Prepping Items

Threads 1&2 have lists of things to think about to prep for the first scenario as do the Brexit prepping threads.

Main differences/additions to something like the Brexit list are:

  • Face masks if you can get them for any trips you have to make in public during an outbreak. These don't offer full protection and cannot be 100% relied upon but are probably better than nothing if you make sure you wear them correctly and dispose of them correctly. N95 masks are best but expensive and harder to wear, surgical face masks are second best. Dust masks are not going to help.
  • Hand sanitiser needs to be 60% or more alcohol content
  • Dettol / bleach / Miltons to disinfect. Not all disinfectants work but these three do
  • Plenty of at home/over counter treatments for flu type symptoms should you need to treat at home
  • Tissues (lots of) should you catch the virus
  • Think about meals that are easy to cook and eat should you be ill or both parents be ill at the same time (soup for example)
  • For a potential hospital trip you may want to prep a 'go bag' should you need to take someone to hospital with the virus (or anything else) during an outbreak. See Thread 1&2 for examples of what people are packing
  • Frequent and thorough hand washing, not touching your face and social distancing (no handshakes, hugs, etc) are some of the most effective ways to stay virus free

Other Thoughts

India have announced that they are stopping exports of some antibiotics, hormone treatments and vitamin supplements as they rely on China for raw materials.

Many factories that supplied fibre for use in sanitary towels and tampons are being diverted to manufacture face masks. Consider stocking up or changing to sustainable items (cloth STs, mooncup, period pants)

If you bulk buy hand gel with a high alcohol content make sure it is stored somewhere safe other than the one you’re using. It is flammable!

He's taken advice that it's ok if you wash hands frequently.

I could pick a few holes there..

FelicityFebruary · 03/03/2020 12:06

Online stuff would be good OhYouBadKitten.

Legoandloldolls · 03/03/2020 12:07

If I and my kids had gotten over the virus and they knew that made us immune I would help out. But with four yoing kids I wouldn't risk their main carer for anything less than knowing we was then immune

Duckyneedsaclean · 03/03/2020 12:14

Sorry, I know this has been said already, but making hand gel - I'm playing to mix 7-8 parts isopropyl alcohol 99. 9% and 2-3 parts aloe vera gel. Will that work? Or do I need another ingredient?

I'm currently kicking myself for not thinking of stocking up for aged parents Blush

Duckyneedsaclean · 03/03/2020 12:20

Planning, not playing*

itsnotjustflu · 03/03/2020 12:25

all oddly quiet on the new cases in the UK front

ofwarren · 03/03/2020 12:28

Won't be any info on new UK cases till 2pm. Not unless the press manage to get a few snippets sooner.

preponderings · 03/03/2020 12:34

So... there are now two cases in our neighbouring town. The girl who brought it back and one of her classmates (rest of class self-isolating). DS has an appointment tomorrow, bus there will be ok, but the bus back is alway jammed, rarely seating space as it's the one most school children come home on. Make them walk the 50 mins home or get the bus?

ofwarren · 03/03/2020 12:35

Depending on their age preponderings I'd walk.

Lycidas · 03/03/2020 12:36

No worse feeling than following this from the start but not thinking of buying hand gel...

BridgeToTerabithia · 03/03/2020 12:36

So france is saying in their advice no non essentials travel (link above). But fco says carry on.

Ok. That makes sense.

NOT

itsnotjustflu · 03/03/2020 12:36

Does anyone know of any FB groups/pages or even websites for meal ideas with tinned food? I can only seem to find books/pages etc with ideas that involve lots of other ingredients....including the one that keeps getting suggested.

itsnotjustflu · 03/03/2020 12:37

@ofwarren will it be the same everyday then? I hadn't even noticed when they were announced. thx

ThreeTree · 03/03/2020 12:49

With regards to planning in the background, I work in non government but in critical national infrastructure. We have enacted the first stage of the the DR procedures for 2 priority teams and business continuity are actively planning, but otherwise it’s hand wash, hand gel and business as usual.

WeBuiltCisCityOnSexistRoles · 03/03/2020 12:58

Actually I don't think that "statement" gives us any cause to panic any more than we already are and it's an opportunity to take a deep breath and consider things.

It didn't tell us anything we didn't know about the virus (unless I've missed something?) so it just confirmed what we already knew. It also confirmed another thing we already knew, that our PM and government are ineffectual and ill prepared. It's confirmed that we are reliant on ourselves not the government. None of this will come as a surprise to the vast majority of people on this thread?

On the contrary, we should be assured we have done the best we can to date - the whole reason we are all here is because we have planned and prepared as best we can with the information we have and lack of guarantees about the short term future.

The people who probably will be panicking are the ones who say "it's just a flu" and the people who say "but the government would never just leave people without "

We are not those people (that is meant to be lighthearted under the circumstances).

I really don't think we should fall into extra panic mode and I think that we should take this an opportunity to remember we are the people who are best prepared for the shit hitting the fan.

I am one of the people in the at risk group with respiratory and other issues, and ill at the moment so I have no resilience and I have DC at schools/college/work and a DH at work so high chance of picking this up with bad consequences. I am of course extremely worried (perhaps slightly terrified!) about this aspect but I'm trying to calm myself with the thought that I have and am doing the best we can. I have prepared myself and my family. I need to be calm to make decisions about schools etc. I need to be calm for my DC.

It is terrifying of course it is but we have prepared and I think we should take strength from this fact and see it as a positive to calm our fears and equip us for the future.

ofwarren · 03/03/2020 13:01

Thank you Webuiltciscity I needed that.
Feeling a bit lost and ignored by our government.

ofwarren · 03/03/2020 13:02

Yes every day *itsnotjusttheflu

wheresmymojo · 03/03/2020 13:09

Sky have just announced another 12 = 51 total in the UK

Thought we weren't supposed to find out until 2pm.

Must have been leaked....

tryingtoprep · 03/03/2020 13:10

So a few thoughts.

UK lack of action compared to other countries. I think our government's relying on public apathy. There'll be unhappy comments online but plenty other people happy to remain in denial, eager to believe all is well. Other countries, for example the French, don't accept it. Look at the Louvre workers. When the UK pension age was raised, we muttered a bit but that's it. In France, it triggered protests that have been going on for months.

If we want measures taken to protect us, save lives, mitigate the damage (including longer-term economic disruption), we need more - and louder - public outrage. I DON'T mean violence. Unfortunately we also need the media including the BBC to challenge decisions. That's not happening for some reason.

Mitigation. How would it disrupt the economy if all those who could, worked from home? DP's job can be done from home. I've seen others post here about it. Their employers don't want them to but it's perfectly doable. Likewise schools. Some parents can look after their children at home, some do have childcare. That means less people at work and school, which makes a difference.

Finally, I've asked before. Are ICU beds held back for the PM and senior ministers? Will Boris (possibly at increased risk being over 50) stay in London to lead by example - "continuing as normal" if cases spiral?

wheresmymojo · 03/03/2020 13:10

Sky doesn't say where they are...

RhubarbTea · 03/03/2020 13:10

I saw the time too and wondered why it was early. I'm going to try and find out where in the country they are...

AuntImmortelle · 03/03/2020 13:11

Matt Hancock said we are at 51 cases now - told the House of Commons.

EliK · 03/03/2020 13:12

It's just going to keep going up isn't it Sad think I've been in denial despite prepping as much as I can.

Lumene · 03/03/2020 13:13

@itsnotjustflu Jack Monroe recently released a book with recipes for tinned food have you tried that?

wheresmymojo · 03/03/2020 13:14

Yep...it will keep spreading. The only thing that can be done without the kind of tactics China have used is to delay the speed of the spread.
