Prepping For A Pandemic ....9

ItsNotJustTheFuckingFlu · 01/03/2020 23:57

wheresmojo asked at the end of thread eight if other posters could keep an eye on threads filling up and start new ones if possible as she’s busy this week and may not have the time, saw thread 8 getting full so thought would start number 9 before going to bed. Thank you to ofwarren for the live updates too. I’ve copied and pasted the info that wheresmymojo has included in every thread, hopefully formatting doesn’t mess up.

Anxiety

As Preppers we tend to look at a reasonable worst case scenario to plan for. Everyone is welcome on the thread but if you find it makes you anxious be kind to yourself and think about sticking to once daily updates from the BBC or similar thanks Flowers

General COVID Info

The estimated replication rate is R= 2 to 4 based on latest expert estimates. This means each infected person spreads the virus to between 2 and 4 people. Experts estimate that, unchecked, it could infect 60% of the population.

Around 15-20% of cases are thought to be severe - that is resulting in the need for hospitalisation. Around 3-5% requiring ventilation.

The estimated mortality rate is around 1-2% at the moment (compared to 0.01-0.1% for flu). This may change as it is very difficult to estimate mortality.

Children tend to have milder symptoms. Those over 60 with underlying health issues and a history of smoking are more likely to be severe (although not exclusively this type of person).

Spread of COVID

It is estimated that the average incubation period is 3-5 days but can be as long as 24 days.

It can be spread with no symptoms.

It can be spread via droplet (cough/sneeze), aerosol (breathing same air in very close quarters), bodily fluids, fecal/oral route and formites (via surfaces, up to 28 days in the right circumstances but up to 3-5 days in more typical circumstances).

Updates

As this is a novel virus and knowledge is constantly being updated - I will post updates as they become available with links to source.

I am not a medical expert so any opinions or conjecture of my own should be taken with a pinch of salt!

Prepping Scenarios

Most of us are prepping for the following situations:

  • Wanting to stay indoors for 2-4 weeks + in case of a local outbreak / schools being closed
  • Potentially being ill with a flu type illness lasting 2-3 weeks with one or more of the household having the illness
  • Having to take a family member to hospital for COVID or any other reason during an outbreak

Prepping Items

Threads 1&2 have lists of things to think about to prep for the first scenario as do the Brexit prepping threads.

Main differences/additions to something like the Brexit list are:

  • Face masks if you can get them for any trips you have to make in public during an outbreak. These don't offer full protection and cannot be 100% relied upon but are probably better than nothing if you make sure you wear them correctly and dispose of them correctly. N95 masks are best but expensive and harder to wear, surgical face masks are second best. Dust masks are not going to help.
  • Hand sanitiser needs to be 60% or more alcohol content
  • Dettol / bleach / Miltons to disinfect. Not all disinfectants work but these three do
  • Plenty of at home/over counter treatments for flu type symptoms should you need to treat at home
  • Tissues (lots of) should you catch the virus
  • Think about meals that are easy to cook and eat should you be ill or both parents be ill at the same time (soup for example)
  • For a potential hospital trip you may want to prep a 'go bag' should you need to take someone to hospital with the virus (or anything else) during an outbreak. See Thread 1&2 for examples of what people are packing
  • Frequent and thorough hand washing, not touching your face and social distancing (no handshakes, hugs, etc) are some of the most effective ways to stay virus free

Other Thoughts

India have announced that they are stopping exports of some antibiotics, hormone treatments and vitamin supplements as they rely on China for raw materials.

Many factories that supplied fibre for use in sanitary towels and tampons are being diverted to manufacture face masks. Consider stocking up or changing to sustainable items (cloth STs, mooncup, period pants)

If you bulk buy hand gel with a high alcohol content make sure it is stored somewhere safe other than the one you’re using. It is flammable!

Latest number from Italy: 2050 infected and as previously reported by PP 52 deaths

Value ibuprofen has been difficult to get for ages - I asked in Boots and they said it’s because it’s manufactured in France and hinted to Brexit effect.

Hi wise tribe,

Our school sent out this message yesterday afternoon

"Dear Parents/Carers, Please see below the latest updated information we have received regarding Coronavirus. Department for Education Coronavirus helpline Today, we have launched a new helpline to answer questions about COVID-19 related to education. Staff, parents and young people can contact the helpline as follows: Phone: 0800 046 8687 Email:[email protected] hours: 8am to 6pm (Monday to Friday) No school should close in response to a suspected (or confirmed) COVID-19 case unless directed to do so by Public Health England."

I phoned the number given (it took a while to get through, as expected) and asked about the scenario of a child with additional needs who could not reliably comply with hygiene recommendations whose parent carers fell within the WHO advice for individuals at risk of severe illness. I was directed to contact 111 and school SENCO which I will do this morning.

My very considered best guess is that we have a few days to figure this out so I don't intend to unilaterally withdraw my child unless local information changes.

Does anyone know where I can find raw data for research purposes? There have been various statements about data and research being made freely available and after reading a recent lancet article on transmission modelling I want to do some number crunching.

Stephen McDonnell (BBC) on Twitter:

The 7 new infections in #Zhejiang Province were from a group of overseas Chinese who normally live in #Italy. They work in the same restaurant in Bergamo. 6 of them flew from #Milan to #Moscow to #Shanghai then travelled to #Qingtian in Zhejiang. One travelled back via #Germany.

The irony is that China will have to start protecting itself from the consequences of the woeful response in the rest of the world.

There are a series of videos on Youtube from David Able and his wife from the Diamond Princes and their experience. If you go back to Vlog #70 or thereabouts, he explained s his symptoms.

He’s 80 a diabetic and seems to be recovering well.

One the the latest ones here.

Lurker since thread 1 here. Finding this so useful. Haven't seen anyone mention this...

Think about home security in the event everyone in your household is away from home for days/ weeks. Secure your banking and internet passwords. If you have them written down, is that safe? Exactly how to do it is a good question...suggestions welcome. But my idea is gather them all together and if you feel they may become unsafe just destroy the record and sort out the consequences later. (Obviously that's a plan for long term savings not day to day money).

avocadoincident · 03/03/2020 06:48

@applesandpears33 you can use puy/vertes lentils anywhere you would use mince or veggie mince.

I'm sure @Plantherd you are all over the lentils! Do you know Anna Jones' cookbooks? Gorgeous vegan food in there. Incredibly tasty on not that many ingredients. Most of our food comes from those books so I've stocked up on the specific ingredients from the books. She was trained by Jaime Oliver.

I've frozen chopped peppers, grated courgette (water squeezed out, chopped celery, loads of different types of soups and there's always random curry and chilli and stew pots in our freezer.

Guardian article saying the Government should be planning for half the NHS workforce to gel ill.

Destinysdaughter · 03/03/2020 07:11

Been thinking, maybe it's better to contract it now, while the NHS still has capacity to treat people!

FourTeaFallOut · 03/03/2020 07:24

You might want to wait a week or two till they have tested the efficacy of current meds before you start licking someone with coronavirus destinysdaughter.

TipseyTorvey · 03/03/2020 07:25

I thought the same Destiny. Those early videos of thousands of people queuing up in China freaked me out.

On that note, does anyone else think its weird that initially there were loads of videos and vloggers coming out of china and now there's silence?

Dennisreynoldsduster · 03/03/2020 07:33

Don’t forget, in China, most ailments are treated by the hospital they don’t have doctors surgeries in the way we do. Some private clinics but they closed in jan I believe so any ailments HAD to go to the hospital. The media didn’t report that though!

I just watched a guy delivering junk mail from my window. Coughing all over his pile and then posting the leaflets through people’s letterboxes. Luckily I have a separate porch and went out there armed with the dettol spray. Going to stick my “no junk mail” sign back up.

It made me think though... there is SO much margin for contamination that you simply can’t control... I feel like I’m going to be washing my hands every five minutes!

WeBuiltCisCityOnSexistRoles · 03/03/2020 07:34

Well I have coined a new word I thought this thread would like (although no doubt it's already all over social media and I just don't know as i don't use it Grin)

CoughShaming

I have coined this after fearing I would tarred and feathered on a bus journey. I have long standing respiratory issues (v bad the moment) but they well predate CV and it's (sorry) an awful gunky wet cough, not dry. I cough into tissues and dispose and use hand gel. I pull my scarf over my face so people don't hear my breathing Wink

Bloody hell though, I think everyone assumed I was Patient Zero of the local area, people ostentatiously moving away, the looks I got, and MN style audible tuts. DH would feel happier if I stayed in the house atm anyway for my health and I'm tending to agree with him now.

I know we are tend towards the Worry end of the scale on this thread Grin would you lot be fearful (please be honest!) if you saw me out and about?

WeBuiltCisCityOnSexistRoles · 03/03/2020 07:36

(I actually hardly go out anyway and it's mostly hospital trips but my life is boring Grin and I fear we will have to quarantine at some point so I like getting out on my good days while I can)

CrapTVAddict · 03/03/2020 07:41

Has anyone else been locked out of Tesco's?
Received a email to say they blocked my account due to detecting a potential scam on Clubcard vouchers and thousands of other people received the same email.
Now I can't sign in at all and order anything. This has happened at the worst time when I would need help with shopping due to helping elderly family members have some basic food in.
The paranoid side of me thinks the govt will stop online shopping to stop people panic buying

Dennisreynoldsduster · 03/03/2020 07:41

I’m going to go out today.
I haven’t been but realised this thing isn’t even nearly at its peak yet and as DH commutes and my mum works in a hospital and looks after DS once a week, me going out a couple of times isn’t going to make a huge amount of difference.
I feel better now that I’m fully prepped - when the case in Essex was announced it was nice not to have to rush to the shops to buy bread and milk!

HasaDigaEebowai · 03/03/2020 07:44

Been thinking, maybe it's better to contract it now, while the NHS still has capacity to treat people

My A&E consultant friend said this - on the face of it in jest but actually completely serious

echobench · 03/03/2020 07:45

Sainsbury’s have capacity in my area.

HasaDigaEebowai · 03/03/2020 07:47

I'm teaching today. Not looking forward to it since the room has no ventilation and there are always people coughing and sneezing. A class full of earnest law students means they generally all turn up too.

ofwarren · 03/03/2020 07:51

China's National Health Commission reported 11 new cases of coronavirus outside Hubei province on Monday. Of those, 7 were "imported from Italy," according to local officials

Legoandloldolls · 03/03/2020 07:51

I am still going to go out. It's looking more and more likely that there will be no lockdown so I'm planning on stopping up my shopping weekly and still meeting my friend for coffee.

I will try Tesco in a bit. I might book a weekly slot as far into the future as I can and try to top up from there.

It's the not knowing what the plans will be but it really feels like nothing will shut, which means catching it is just a waiting game. I cant see everyone self isolating properly esp as 111 seem so reluctant to test people who seem likely to have it but only mildly ill.

ofwarren · 03/03/2020 07:51

NEW: Georgia state reports 2 confirmed cases of coronavirus t.co/eUoE2bjB9j

TipseyTorvey · 03/03/2020 07:53

My sainsbury app is fine too. I have our normal slot booked for Friday but I live very close to three supermarkets so I'm not too worried.

Martin Lewis did a twitter poll yesterday asking if anyone was prepping. 85% said no. Then he was criticised for causing panic. I suspect most people won't panic buy until there is actually panic.

South Korea reports 477 new cases of coronavirus and 6 new deaths, raising total to 4,812 cases and 34 dead t.co/eUoE2b20hL

@avocadoincident

I don't know about the cookbooks but will take a look, thank you Smile

I do love Lentils and how versatile they are.
