Prepping For A Pandemic ....9

ItsNotJustTheFuckingFlu · 01/03/2020 23:57

wheresmojo asked at the end of thread eight if other posters could keep an eye on threads filling up and start new ones if possible as she’s busy this week and may not have the time, saw thread 8 getting full so thought would start number 9 before going to bed. Thank you to ofwarren for the live updates too. I’ve copied and pasted the info that wheresmymojo has included in every thread, hopefully formatting doesn’t mess up.

Anxiety

As Preppers we tend to look at a reasonable worst case scenario to plan for. Everyone is welcome on the thread but if you find it makes you anxious be kind to yourself and think about sticking to once daily updates from the BBC or similar thanks Flowers

General COVID Info

The estimated replication rate is R= 2 to 4 based on latest expert estimates. This means each infected person spreads the virus to between 2 and 4 people. Experts estimate that, unchecked, it could infect 60% of the population.

Around 15-20% of cases are thought to be severe - that is resulting in the need for hospitalisation. Around 3-5% requiring ventilation.

The estimated mortality rate is around 1-2% at the moment (compared to 0.01-0.1% for flu). This may change as it is very difficult to estimate mortality.

Children tend to have milder symptoms. Those over 60 with underlying health issues and a history of smoking are more likely to be severe (although not exclusively this type of person).

Spread of COVID

It is estimated that the average incubation period is 3-5 days but can be as long as 24 days.

It can be spread with no symptoms.

It can be spread via droplet (cough/sneeze), aerosol (breathing same air in very close quarters), bodily fluids, fecal/oral route and formites (via surfaces, up to 28 days in the right circumstances but up to 3-5 days in more typical circumstances).

Updates

As this is a novel virus and knowledge is constantly being updated - I will post updates as they become available with links to source.

I am not a medical expert so any opinions or conjecture of my own should be taken with a pinch of salt!

Prepping Scenarios

Most of us are prepping for the following situations:

  • Wanting to stay indoors for 2-4 weeks + in case of a local outbreak / schools being closed
  • Potentially being ill with a flu type illness lasting 2-3 weeks with one or more of the household having the illness
  • Having to take a family member to hospital for COVID or any other reason during an outbreak

Prepping Items

Threads 1&2 have lists of things to think about to prep for the first scenario as do the Brexit prepping threads.

Main differences/additions to something like the Brexit list are:

  • Face masks if you can get them for any trips you have to make in public during an outbreak. These don't offer full protection and cannot be 100% relied upon but are probably better than nothing if you make sure you wear them correctly and dispose of them correctly. N95 masks are best but expensive and harder to wear, surgical face masks are second best. Dust masks are not going to help.
  • Hand sanitiser needs to be 60% or more alcohol content
  • Dettol / bleach / Miltons to disinfect. Not all disinfectants work but these three do
  • Plenty of at home/over counter treatments for flu type symptoms should you need to treat at home
  • Tissues (lots of) should you catch the virus
  • Think about meals that are easy to cook and eat should you be ill or both parents be ill at the same time (soup for example)
  • For a potential hospital trip you may want to prep a 'go bag' should you need to take someone to hospital with the virus (or anything else) during an outbreak. See Thread 1&2 for examples of what people are packing
  • Frequent and thorough hand washing, not touching your face and social distancing (no handshakes, hugs, etc) are some of the most effective ways to stay virus free

Other Thoughts

India have announced that they are stopping exports of some antibiotics, hormone treatments and vitamin supplements as they rely on China for raw materials.

Many factories that supplied fibre for use in sanitary towels and tampons are being diverted to manufacture face masks. Consider stocking up or changing to sustainable items (cloth STs, mooncup, period pants)

If you bulk buy hand gel with a high alcohol content make sure it is stored somewhere safe other than the one you’re using. It is flammable!

Starting to feel really anxious now. Prepped as well as I can, just wish I could get my student son to stop being so arrogant and bloody
Iisten to me! Hubby gave him a talking to last night and we told him that if the uni gets shut then he will drive the 3 hours immediately to fetch him home (assuming no lock down). Also told him to speak to his girlfriend whose family live in France for her to come to us too if she can't get home. Only afterwards did I consider what a responsibility that is; imagine we catch it and give it to her? The alternative is that she stays by herself which I can't think of! I just wish I had my adult (student) children home with me. I think it's that that's causing the anxiousness, plus the fact that myself and my husband are over 50 and he is diabetic. I just wish we were a few days on and out of this waiting stage, bad as it sounds.

Someone up thread asked about what you can do to treat Covid-19 at home. I'm not a nurse or a doctor, but I have a lot of medical knowledge and this is what I am doing

You cant cure it, but you can treat the symptoms and keep the patient more comfortable while their immune system fights it off

The symptoms are reported to be fever, sore throat, runny nose, body aches and cough - sometimes leading to pneumonia

I have ibuprofen and paracetomol for fevers/making patient more comfortable
I have medicine containing guaifenesin (I'm in the US and its called mucinex here) It thins mucus the body produces and makes it easier to cough up gunk from the lungs
I have humidifiers and rosemary/tea tree and mint essential oils as humid air is more comfortable to breath (although its been raining so much in the UK recently that your air is probably really humid anyway!)
ORS sachets so that I can keep the patient well hydrated and electrolyte levels up - I only get the medical grade ones as gatorade is pointless.
I have throat lozenges to help with sore throats and I'm going to get some of that spray on throat anesthetic stuff.
Then I have food and drinks that I know my family would likely want to eat if they were feeling dreadful
I have vitamin d to support their immune systems
I have Manuka honey as its meant to be anti viral (but this is a long shot)

At the first sign of anything I will be making cup after cup of hot tea (lemon and honey for the little dc) and getting them to sip sip and sip. Several studies have show that hot liquid in the mouth will kill virus and bacteria trying to get a foot hold. Repeated sipping keeps the area hostile for invaders and will reduce numbers if it cant completely wipe them out..... Clearly burning your mouth with too hot a liquid is counter productive, so be sensible if you want to try this one.....

I have a pulse oximeter so I will be keeping an eye on oxygen saturation in combination with pulse rate

And then I cross my fingers and hope that DS3 and I dont catch it as we both have heart conditions which raises the likelihood of complications

Good night and a prepper wave to all.

Lumene · 02/03/2020 22:24

Thanks SeatoSki

ofwarren · 02/03/2020 22:24

Good night Felicity

middleager · 02/03/2020 22:24

Goodnight

And thanks Sea some helpful, practical advice there.

This thread is a comfort during uncertain times (when everyone around me seems in denial).

permanentlyfrazzled1 · 02/03/2020 22:27

SeaToSki Thanks for that, really useful. Hope you and your son manage to stay safe.

Ibloodylovewomen · 02/03/2020 22:33

Grateful for all the thoughts on here. Have people prepped for power going out? If so, can I ask what are you doing please?

Also, those of you who have masks, would you wear one to the GP surgery if you had an appointment this week? I feel like I'll be walking into one of the worst places for potential infection Confused

ofwarren · 02/03/2020 22:35

4th case of #coronavirus found in #Illinois as wife of infected man being treated at Arlington Heights hospital also tests positive.

itsnotjustflu · 02/03/2020 22:40

@Ibloodylovewomen yes we have. we have candles and a generator to run our fridge. We also have a mini gas stove with lots of small cans of gas. We'd have bought a bbq but we are moving soon plus wanted a small hob anyway

middleager · 02/03/2020 22:42

I didn't think of a BBQ but good idea.

Interesting article in the Guardian about how supermarkets and their suppliers plan for panic buying and the impacts of a pandemic. Reassuring actually.

Just got back from the shops. I normally go after 9pm and it’s definitely more sparse than the normal for this time of night. In Aldi all the sardines in tomatoe sauce randomly was gone ( except one tin!) in the big Sainsbury’s in Guildford there was no Sainsbury’s own brand pasta at all no. No risotto rice at all either. Mind you I can’t vouch for what Sainsbury’s there are like for stock levels as I try to avoid it there at night. Some of staff was swearing like sailers and it reminded me what a dump it is 😯

T0tallyFuckedUpFamily · 02/03/2020 22:56

just a wee tip for anyone that is batch cooking and worried about freezer space. Make your soups a lot thicker than usual and us less liquid in your stews, curries, etc. That way they take up less room in the freezer and you can add water/stock/milk/milk alternative to thin them out, when you’re defrosting.

MrsBobDylan · 02/03/2020 23:12

I have 3 dc, one of who has type 1 diabetes and is currently fighting off an infection with the help of anti-biotics and steroids. There is a confirmed case of Coronavirus in the school opposite his and I am very worried for him.

I have been plowing my nervous energy into prepping and have a chest freezer arriving on Thursday and a massive shop arriving Friday. I have been batch cooking and have 7 dishes prepped which each serve four people (autistic ds will stick to his regular diet of nuggets and mini pizza thanks :D).

This thread has reminded me I need to stock up on flu medication and bread to freeze. In fact I will add them to my shop.

DH is refusing to worry which I'm finding a bit irritating, although it's probably for the best. DS12 is very, very unaware of how his diabetes may impact him and I want to keep it that way but still get him to practice preventive measures.

AlohaMolly · 02/03/2020 23:15

@wheresmymojo I might hold you to that GrinGrin

planningaheadtoday · 02/03/2020 23:36

@T0tallyFuckedUpFamily thank you for that tip. It had never occurred to me.

AdaColeman · 02/03/2020 23:38

Interesting about the sipping of hot drinks, I’ve got plenty of herbal teas I could that with. Thank you @SeaToSki.

UPDATE from Lake Washington Institute of Technology on the 22 students & faculty who visited Kirkland nursing home where multiple ppl contracted #coronavirus. They are now being told, 3 days after coronavirus cases were confirmed at facility, that they should self-quarantine. t.co/207R16Y4ch

MakeLemonade · 02/03/2020 23:49

Has anyone come across any first hand accounts of what it’s been like having it? I’d be interested in reading content like this - ideally with some balance from the milder cases to the more serious.

I went to Waitrose today and stocked up on micro bags of vegetables and grains as they were on offer and ice lollies. Stock was pretty good apart from toilet rolls and ibuprofen.

The German cruise ship "Aida Aura" has postponed its departure from Haugesund due to fear of #coronavirus in two of the passengers. The two passengers are now quarantined in their cabin and awaiting their test results.

RedLentilYellowLentil · 03/03/2020 01:09

Here are a few first person accounts @MakeLemonade. I read another one in the Guardian the other day too but I can't find it now.

BlackeyedSusan · 03/03/2020 01:57

Half way through the thread in just over one day. Getting serious. Germany and France are leapfrogging each other in the tables of cases, the graph has steepened again.

Tomorrow I predict more than four new UK cases. I wonder if some of the results were delayed to coincide with whatever announcements are to be made after the Cobra meeting.

MyHairIsSoapy · 03/03/2020 02:50

Ocado were only offering me slots 3 days out. They were vanishing as I looked at them.

I am glad I stocked up last month. That is the definition of prepping. Before it hit the news I ordered a job lot of hand gel that I’m now handing out to people close to me and family to help keep people safe.
