Prepping For A Pandemic ....9

ItsNotJustTheFuckingFlu · 01/03/2020 23:57

wheresmojo asked at the end of thread eight if other posters could keep an eye on threads filling up and start new ones if possible as she’s busy this week and may not have the time, saw thread 8 getting full so thought would start number 9 before going to bed. Thank you to ofwarren for the live updates too. I’ve copied and pasted the info that wheresmymojo has included in every thread, hopefully formatting doesn’t mess up.

Anxiety

As Preppers we tend to look at a reasonable worst case scenario to plan for. Everyone is welcome on the thread but if you find it makes you anxious be kind to yourself and think about sticking to once daily updates from the BBC or similar thanks Flowers

General COVID Info

The estimated replication rate is R= 2 to 4 based on latest expert estimates. This means each infected person spreads the virus to between 2 and 4 people. Experts estimate that, unchecked, it could infect 60% of the population.

Around 15-20% of cases are thought to be severe - that is resulting in the need for hospitalisation. Around 3-5% requiring ventilation.

The estimated mortality rate is around 1-2% at the moment (compared to 0.01-0.1% for flu). This may change as it is very difficult to estimate mortality.

Children tend to have milder symptoms. Those over 60 with underlying health issues and a history of smoking are more likely to be severe (although not exclusively this type of person).

Spread of COVID

It is estimated that the average incubation period is 3-5 days but can be as long as 24 days.

It can be spread with no symptoms.

It can be spread via droplet (cough/sneeze), aerosol (breathing same air in very close quarters), bodily fluids, fecal/oral route and formites (via surfaces, up to 28 days in the right circumstances but up to 3-5 days in more typical circumstances).

Updates

As this is a novel virus and knowledge is constantly being updated - I will post updates as they become available with links to source.

I am not a medical expert so any opinions or conjecture of my own should be taken with a pinch of salt!

Prepping Scenarios

Most of us are prepping for the following situations:

  • Wanting to stay indoors for 2-4 weeks + in case of a local outbreak / schools being closed
  • Potentially being ill with a flu type illness lasting 2-3 weeks with one or more of the household having the illness
  • Having to take a family member to hospital for COVID or any other reason during an outbreak

Prepping Items

Threads 1&2 have lists of things to think about to prep for the first scenario as do the Brexit prepping threads.

Main differences/additions to something like the Brexit list are:

  • Face masks if you can get them for any trips you have to make in public during an outbreak. These don't offer full protection and cannot be 100% relied upon but are probably better than nothing if you make sure you wear them correctly and dispose of them correctly. N95 masks are best but expensive and harder to wear, surgical face masks are second best. Dust masks are not going to help.
  • Hand sanitiser needs to be 60% or more alcohol content
  • Dettol / bleach / Miltons to disinfect. Not all disinfectants work but these three do
  • Plenty of at home/over counter treatments for flu type symptoms should you need to treat at home
  • Tissues (lots of) should you catch the virus
  • Think about meals that are easy to cook and eat should you be ill or both parents be ill at the same time (soup for example)
  • For a potential hospital trip you may want to prep a 'go bag' should you need to take someone to hospital with the virus (or anything else) during an outbreak. See Thread 1&2 for examples of what people are packing
  • Frequent and thorough hand washing, not touching your face and social distancing (no handshakes, hugs, etc) are some of the most effective ways to stay virus free

Other Thoughts

India have announced that they are stopping exports of some antibiotics, hormone treatments and vitamin supplements as they rely on China for raw materials.

Many factories that supplied fibre for use in sanitary towels and tampons are being diverted to manufacture face masks. Consider stocking up or changing to sustainable items (cloth STs, mooncup, period pants)

If you bulk buy hand gel with a high alcohol content make sure it is stored somewhere safe other than the one you’re using. It is flammable!

Tinnednut as I posted earlier. There will be more of them about, after the numpty 'expert' on the BBC 1 programme use seasonal flu for context Hmm

wheresmymojo · 02/03/2020 20:25

I just went for a quick read through the 'positive Coronavirus' thread to see how they were getting on.

One of the last posts by the OP is:

"Also, headline today said the UK had hit 40 cases but I think this has been redacted and confirmed to be 35, so not as big a jump."

So...yeah Confused

Heartyhooker · 02/03/2020 20:25

@BigChocFrenzy have gone to one weekly online shop instead of mooching around Booths after the school run. Standing over family with vitamins and handwashing. Planning to walk to work instead of public transport

BigChocFrenzy · 02/03/2020 20:26

Vaccination is still 12-18 months from being available against Coronavirus

I've not read of any "cure" once people get it, just palliative treatment and tackling any other diseases that arise in a weakened system.

afaik, the number of cases are expected to fall off sharply this summer ?

but next winter it may rocket up again everywhere, as we still won't have a vaccination
So we will probably need to keep the stockpile topped up until that is available - this current prepping is probably not just a short term thing

I read it may be with us permanently in various forms, but later if we are able to vaccinate and possibly also some people acquire immunity, it should become less of a public health crisis.

Australian health officials are meeting today to consider additional measures to stop the spread of coronavirus, including a possible ban on large gatherings and asking people to work from home - ABC, citing sources

echobench · 02/03/2020 20:29

Well I've filled in the questionnaire online regarding DD and her symptoms. Was told to contact GP. So clicked on the out of hours service. Got a call from a doctor saying that we weren't covered by their OOH service and he would put me through to 111. Now just on hold...

BigChocFrenzy · 02/03/2020 20:29

heartyhooker Yes, I forgot another change: I also scrub my hands thoroughly whenever I get home and I wash for longer before I eat out

I don't yet use gel when out, but I will do later if advice here changes

ofwarren · 02/03/2020 20:32

#panicbuying on twitter is interesting.
Lots of photos from lots of Brits buying what they can.
Soooo glad I got my prep in weeks ago!!

ifonly4 · 02/03/2020 20:35

springinsight I've had pneumonia twice. On both occasions I felt awful for about four days before as well as bouts of extreme chills. Then over 24 hours going from feeling a bit breathless, to finding it hard to take a sufficient breath and pain in lungs. First occasion, I can remember sat under a quilt with heating turned up to 30c and cold. Second occasion I'd felt so ill the previous days I hadn't washed/showered and remember telling DH I needed the doctor, but couldn't see one as I wasn't filthy (luckily he was there to run a bath and help me).

I have no respiratory or other health problems, am fairly fit and active and I still managed to get pneumonia at 38 and 42.

BigChocFrenzy · 02/03/2020 20:38

The German govt cancelled an international trade fair in Berlin
and also banned large events / crowds - I think the limit is 1,000 people atm

One town has 1,000 people quarantined

I'm surprised the UK govt is not being more proactive
Other European govts seem to be taking it far more seriously, even those with few cases

mogloveseggs · 02/03/2020 20:39

@ofwarren the leaflet given says 24-48 hours but the nurse said realistically 3-4 days!
It took 26 hours to get a call back from 111.

BigChocFrenzy · 02/03/2020 20:41

A normally healthy former colleague aged about 35 once got pneumonia and said she still hadn't recovered full fitness 3 years later

  • she said X rays showed scars on her lungs
Bramblespoint · 02/03/2020 20:42

@echobench

This is why the NHS is overstretched.

You DD has a slight fever, unless you've travelled to a high risk area why do you need to contact anyone?

Calpol, fluids and monitor

The Snohomish County, Washington resident who died of coronavirus was a man in his 40s

ofwarren · 02/03/2020 20:44

It means it's not picked up abroad, somewhere like Italy. It is picked up from their community and they don't know from who.

DryHeave · 02/03/2020 20:46

Dettol sold out on Amazon? I think my DH has finally stopped thinking I’m mad for having a stocked up cupboard (or two Blush)

ofwarren · 02/03/2020 20:47

The shops will be interesting over the next few days. The panic buying is ramping up.

Yeah, those are the worrying cases. There are obviously cases in those towns that don't know they have it.

WeBuiltCisCityOnSexistRoles · 02/03/2020 21:00

I'm actually quite surprised the government haven't been delighted to take the angle of "take personal responsibility for your supply of food and medicines and don't expect the state to spend money to save your arse if you fuck up by not doing this properly" as that's usually the sort of message they like to send for any situation Hmm

They've obviously decided the risk that this message might tip people into panic mode, outweighs the warm smug feels they could get from being able to lecture us all on personal responsibility and civic duty.

Or they've saving it up for the future to use against all the feckless non Preppers ringing 999 because Sainsbury's can't deliver until next week and they have no milk (this is a JOKE before any lurkers pull a wee humphy face Wink)

Seriously though, it does surprise me they're letting this golden opportunity for them go by...

I'm also feeling slightly disturbed that I kind of want them to say these things. Perhaps I really am turning into my parents

NatoPMT · 02/03/2020 21:02

Is there any info on what type of pneumonia is linked to CV? I know there’s a vaccine against many bacterial strains

I’m wondering if it’s worth getting

It's viral pneumonia but it's good to have the bacterial pneumonia vaccine in case of any secondary infection.
