Prepping For A Pandemic ....9

ItsNotJustTheFuckingFlu · 01/03/2020 23:57

wheresmojo asked at the end of thread eight if other posters could keep an eye on threads filling up and start new ones if possible as she’s busy this week and may not have the time, saw thread 8 getting full so thought would start number 9 before going to bed. Thank you to ofwarren for the live updates too. I’ve copied and pasted the info that wheresmymojo has included in every thread, hopefully formatting doesn’t mess up.

Anxiety

As Preppers we tend to look at a reasonable worst case scenario to plan for. Everyone is welcome on the thread but if you find it makes you anxious be kind to yourself and think about sticking to once daily updates from the BBC or similar thanks Flowers

General COVID Info

The estimated replication rate is R= 2 to 4 based on latest expert estimates. This means each infected person spreads the virus to between 2 and 4 people. Experts estimate that, unchecked, it could infect 60% of the population.

Around 15-20% of cases are thought to be severe - that is resulting in the need for hospitalisation. Around 3-5% requiring ventilation.

The estimated mortality rate is around 1-2% at the moment (compared to 0.01-0.1% for flu). This may change as it is very difficult to estimate mortality.

Children tend to have milder symptoms. Those over 60 with underlying health issues and a history of smoking are more likely to be severe (although not exclusively this type of person).

Spread of COVID

It is estimated that the average incubation period is 3-5 days but can be as long as 24 days.

It can be spread with no symptoms.

It can be spread via droplet (cough/sneeze), aerosol (breathing same air in very close quarters), bodily fluids, fecal/oral route and formites (via surfaces, up to 28 days in the right circumstances but up to 3-5 days in more typical circumstances).

Updates

As this is a novel virus and knowledge is constantly being updated - I will post updates as they become available with links to source.

I am not a medical expert so any opinions or conjecture of my own should be taken with a pinch of salt!

Prepping Scenarios

Most of us are prepping for the following situations:

  • Wanting to stay indoors for 2-4 weeks + in case of a local outbreak / schools being closed
  • Potentially being ill with a flu type illness lasting 2-3 weeks with one or more of the household having the illness
  • Having to take a family member to hospital for COVID or any other reason during an outbreak

Prepping Items

Threads 1&2 have lists of things to think about to prep for the first scenario as do the Brexit prepping threads.

Main differences/additions to something like the Brexit list are:

  • Face masks if you can get them for any trips you have to make in public during an outbreak. These don't offer full protection and cannot be 100% relied upon but are probably better than nothing if you make sure you wear them correctly and dispose of them correctly. N95 masks are best but expensive and harder to wear, surgical face masks are second best. Dust masks are not going to help.
  • Hand sanitiser needs to be 60% or more alcohol content
  • Dettol / bleach / Miltons to disinfect. Not all disinfectants work but these three do
  • Plenty of at home/over counter treatments for flu type symptoms should you need to treat at home
  • Tissues (lots of) should you catch the virus
  • Think about meals that are easy to cook and eat should you be ill or both parents be ill at the same time (soup for example)
  • For a potential hospital trip you may want to prep a 'go bag' should you need to take someone to hospital with the virus (or anything else) during an outbreak. See Thread 1&2 for examples of what people are packing
  • Frequent and thorough hand washing, not touching your face and social distancing (no handshakes, hugs, etc) are some of the most effective ways to stay virus free

Other Thoughts

India have announced that they are stopping exports of some antibiotics, hormone treatments and vitamin supplements as they rely on China for raw materials.

Many factories that supplied fibre for use in sanitary towels and tampons are being diverted to manufacture face masks. Consider stocking up or changing to sustainable items (cloth STs, mooncup, period pants)

If you bulk buy hand gel with a high alcohol content make sure it is stored somewhere safe other than the one you’re using. It is flammable!

Are Scottish figures separate from UK? Should be included but yesterday's announcement was separate.

Any ideas?

wheresmymojo · 02/03/2020 19:58

@AlohaMolly

Just catching up - TBH if you get to the point of needing your 3 year old to use a kettle I will don my FFP3 mask and latex gloves, drive to wherever you live and drop off food!

NewYearNewTwatName · 02/03/2020 19:59

I had to turn off the BBC 1 one, after they had the 'expert' on saying to put into context seasonal flu kill X amount and there is only X deaths from CV.

Then when asked how long the virus can last on hard surfaces his said it can last quite a few hours yes.
dickhead

I caught the tale end of the channel 5 one and it seemed more informative.

ofwarren · 02/03/2020 20:00

@Elik
There is no way of removing your child without relinquishing their place.
You will get fined if you just keep them off.

mogloveseggs · 02/03/2020 20:01

@justchecking1 returned from northern Italy ski trip and felt unwell couple days after. Rang nhs and they referred for testing. Test nurses said they've seen loads of ski trip kids who are probably just exhausted but better safe than sorry.
My dm has a heart problem and dmil lung problems so wanted her tested and we are on lockdown until the results come back.

OneTimePrepper · 02/03/2020 20:01

Several at work today saying its just a bad flu. Just fuck off now!

ofwarren · 02/03/2020 20:02

Have they said how long the tests are taking @mogloveseggs?

Springinsight · 02/03/2020 20:05

What I'd like to know is,

What is the best medicine agaisnt this?

Cold and flu stuff?

How do we know if it becomes possible pneumonia?
If we get covid, tell 111 get tested etc will they administer anti viral straight away?

I think no matter what age if your ill with it, leaving it makes worse complications?

Will we need cough medicine? Bronco tablets?

Just paracetamol what!

This is the lack of info annoying me.

lachy · 02/03/2020 20:06

@suzieduh just watched it.

DH is now on board with my prepping which is good.

I'm finishing work tomorrow at 2.30, and aiming to get non perishable household items done, as well as non perishable foods.

wherearemychickens · 02/03/2020 20:06

Where has the AIBU thread gone? I can't see it in the first couple of pages of active.

NewYearNewTwatName · 02/03/2020 20:09

it's been moved to the new coronavirus board.

it's on thread 10 now

Springinsight · 02/03/2020 20:09

Italy is going through the roof.
I dislike this waiting game.
I'm happy to stay at home with dc.
It's waiting to be react rather than being proactive and stopping the spread!

Tinnednut · 02/03/2020 20:09

@wherearemychickens it was moved to the new Covid section.

Funkycats · 02/03/2020 20:10

chickens there's a new coronavirus board. It's probably been moved across.

wherearemychickens · 02/03/2020 20:10

Ah, we have a new coronavirus section - had missed that!

Heartyhooker · 02/03/2020 20:11

I work in a residential home with 32 beds the death rates for over 80s suggest 4 deaths if we get it, probably more as they have more underlying health conditions than those still living at home. My worst case scenario ( not most likely) is that ill clients won't be admitted to hospital as they have 24 hour care already . Last year we had a few discharges from A and E during flu season that would probably have merited a bed if there were more avainable.
It's not the flu I've worked in care for twenty years

Paperdollss · 02/03/2020 20:12

Can anyone advise what type of masks apart from the N95 please?
I recall someone mentioned FP3 on the last thread but can’t find it

Tinnednut · 02/03/2020 20:12

The next person who says it's just the flu to me is going to get seriously challenged on WHY they believe that because all info we have and the actions of China, Korea, Japan and Italy suggests it is not 'just flu'.

YoursTunbridgeWells · 02/03/2020 20:14

@wheresmymojo you restored some of my faith in humanity. FFP3 mask gloves and all.

All I am seeing, is "I'm alright jack" stuff really. Like at work today, a 20 year old said to me (over 40) and another manager (over 30).. "It's fine the death rate doesn't really spiral until you're over 30.." Facts wrong, insensitive and what about her parents and grandparents.

And the "It's ok. They have underlying health issues." Well a lot of people I know have these - asthma and diabetes being really common. I reckon 1/4 people I know have a risk factor - age, asthma, people who get several chest infections a year, recent heart attack, MS, immune conditions, cancer, smoker, ex-smoker. God knows how many people have underlying issues they don't know about - undetected diabtetes for example.

Or "I have 6 months of food and me and my boyfriend are going to hole up at home as we can both afford to work from home without any penalty from work. Thank god we dont' have kids."

"No point having a donation drive. Nobody's going to give to food banks as they need to stockpile their own food." True maybe just way too blunt.

It's really upsetting when people can't think further their own immediate needs. Some people can't conceive their older relatives, or friends may be at real risk, that plenty of people they know may have a health condition that they keep private.

Tinnednut · 02/03/2020 20:15

@Paperdollss N95 is the American term for FP3. You other choice is a respirator mask with Charcoal filters that last a month.

Puppycorn · 02/03/2020 20:15

@Springinsight I’m not sure what Nhs advises but the family doctor for mum and dad back home (India) said he is stocking up on anti malarial drug chloroquine phosphate and some strong antivirals for his hospital so they can prescribe it ahead. They don’t want anyone infected to turn up at the hospital doors and have even talked to them about whatsapp consultations.

ofwarren · 02/03/2020 20:17

@Springinsight there isn't an antiviral for coronavirus. They have been trialling a few different drugs such as one for HIV.

BigChocFrenzy · 02/03/2020 20:17

Apart from stocking up (excuse nosiness)...

How has everyone here modified their daily life & plans, if at all ?

I'm 63, so higher risk, but no known health problems, live alone, no family

  • I retired nearly 6 weeks ago and so thankful I no longer have to sit with spluttering colleagues in an office - that must have improved my chances

  • I never use public transport normally anyway, but I definitely wouldn't now

  • I've cancelled all plans for outings to museums, galleries, Heidelburg, Frankfurt etc, and day cruises along the Rhine

  • I'm still going to the gym 6 days per week,
but from today I won't use the sauna and also I'll be showering at home only

  • I'm cutting out a couple of classes and I won't go in on my training restday for coffee and a natter

  • I still have my daily Rhine walk - no reason to stop that afaik

  • I still eat out 5 days a week, but only at my 2 fav local restaurants which are superb & immaculate.

  • I shop once per week for fresh food, instead of 3 x

YoursTunbridgeWells · 02/03/2020 20:21

@Springinsight anti-malerials can only bought for maleria prevention in the UK. They are bought OTC from a pharmacist.
