Prepping For A Pandemic ....9

ItsNotJustTheFuckingFlu · 01/03/2020 23:57

wheresmojo asked at the end of thread eight if other posters could keep an eye on threads filling up and start new ones if possible as she’s busy this week and may not have the time, saw thread 8 getting full so thought would start number 9 before going to bed. Thank you to ofwarren for the live updates too. I’ve copied and pasted the info that wheresmymojo has included in every thread, hopefully formatting doesn’t mess up.

Anxiety

As Preppers we tend to look at a reasonable worst case scenario to plan for. Everyone is welcome on the thread but if you find it makes you anxious be kind to yourself and think about sticking to once daily updates from the BBC or similar thanks Flowers

General COVID Info

The estimated replication rate is R= 2 to 4 based on latest expert estimates. This means each infected person spreads the virus to between 2 and 4 people. Experts estimate that, unchecked, it could infect 60% of the population.

Around 15-20% of cases are thought to be severe - that is resulting in the need for hospitalisation. Around 3-5% requiring ventilation.

The estimated mortality rate is around 1-2% at the moment (compared to 0.01-0.1% for flu). This may change as it is very difficult to estimate mortality.

Children tend to have milder symptoms. Those over 60 with underlying health issues and a history of smoking are more likely to be severe (although not exclusively this type of person).

Spread of COVID

It is estimated that the average incubation period is 3-5 days but can be as long as 24 days.

It can be spread with no symptoms.

It can be spread via droplet (cough/sneeze), aerosol (breathing same air in very close quarters), bodily fluids, fecal/oral route and formites (via surfaces, up to 28 days in the right circumstances but up to 3-5 days in more typical circumstances).

Updates

As this is a novel virus and knowledge is constantly being updated - I will post updates as they become available with links to source.

I am not a medical expert so any opinions or conjecture of my own should be taken with a pinch of salt!

Prepping Scenarios

Most of us are prepping for the following situations:

  • Wanting to stay indoors for 2-4 weeks + in case of a local outbreak / schools being closed
  • Potentially being ill with a flu type illness lasting 2-3 weeks with one or more of the household having the illness
  • Having to take a family member to hospital for COVID or any other reason during an outbreak

Prepping Items

Threads 1&2 have lists of things to think about to prep for the first scenario as do the Brexit prepping threads.

Main differences/additions to something like the Brexit list are:

  • Face masks if you can get them for any trips you have to make in public during an outbreak. These don't offer full protection and cannot be 100% relied upon but are probably better than nothing if you make sure you wear them correctly and dispose of them correctly. N95 masks are best but expensive and harder to wear, surgical face masks are second best. Dust masks are not going to help.
  • Hand sanitiser needs to be 60% or more alcohol content
  • Dettol / bleach / Miltons to disinfect. Not all disinfectants work but these three do
  • Plenty of at home/over counter treatments for flu type symptoms should you need to treat at home
  • Tissues (lots of) should you catch the virus
  • Think about meals that are easy to cook and eat should you be ill or both parents be ill at the same time (soup for example)
  • For a potential hospital trip you may want to prep a 'go bag' should you need to take someone to hospital with the virus (or anything else) during an outbreak. See Thread 1&2 for examples of what people are packing
  • Frequent and thorough hand washing, not touching your face and social distancing (no handshakes, hugs, etc) are some of the most effective ways to stay virus free

Other Thoughts

India have announced that they are stopping exports of some antibiotics, hormone treatments and vitamin supplements as they rely on China for raw materials.

Many factories that supplied fibre for use in sanitary towels and tampons are being diverted to manufacture face masks. Consider stocking up or changing to sustainable items (cloth STs, mooncup, period pants)

If you bulk buy hand gel with a high alcohol content make sure it is stored somewhere safe other than the one you’re using. It is flammable!

Hi all. Did a mega shop in Tesco earlier - VERY low on UHT milk, bread flour and Heinz soup. Everything else seemed ok. I was the only one clearly doing a prep shop 😂

The Idaho mash is £1 in Tesco atm. Small tins of Nido milk reduced so it works out cheaper than the big ones.

I still need to get some more beans, tomatoes and purée etc. But pretty well stocked now!

I’ve ordered a breadmaker from Argos (seemed popular).

Also, spoke to a GP earlier and their view was that we will all get it, children seem to be doing ok. Felt a lot better afterwards.

Now I need to find somewhere to store all this food! :O

applesandpears33 · 02/03/2020 19:18

Thanks for the recommendations for Idaho mash. Any suggestions for soya mince? I used to buy it years ago but DH says he doesn't like the taste and I haven't bought any in over ten years. It would be a good thing to have in the storecupboard though.

CDC confirms Florida's two presumptive #coronavirus cases are positive, Governor DeSantis says, adding that one patient traveled to Italy and the second has not traveled but has underlying health conditions. 'We do anticipate to see more positive cases in the state of Florida.' t.co/crsXefMAyP

My regard for the general population has taken a massive hit these last few weeks. It's quite depressing to see how uniformed and naïve people can be.

FourTeaFallOut shocking isn't it?

I am just so thankful that dh, dc, my family and closest friends are all on board with prepp. I really feel those on here that are having to do the mental load all alone, whos dh/p are not on the same page. Prepping for a family is not a small thing, so many things and scenarios to think about. It is also emotionally charged as many of us here have dc to think about.

I am so greatful for this space of information, thank you to the fab people finding and passing on updates, ideas and support.

Well, I know I live in the sticks, but my quick trip to the local market town this afternoon suggests no-one locally owns a tv/the Internet/follows the news... the shelves were full of ‘stocking up’ type goods, plus disinfectants and cleaning products - there were no gaps on the shelves at al - my trolley was the only one with ‘stock’ items in, and the pharmacist couldn’t have been more condescending if he’d actually used words... and someone on the High Street openly coughed 😵 Just the once, but still! Oh well, more for us preppers to buy, eh! And I felt quite smug as I used my hand gel coming out of each shop then again when I got back in the car. 😁

France confirms 61 new cases of coronavirus and 1 new death, raising total to 191 cases and 3 deaths t.co/eUoE2b20hL

God it's really picking up there. We will follow suit...

KundaliniRising · 02/03/2020 19:29

applesandpears33 not soya mince, but dc really like sosmix sausage mix (vegi), we buy it bulk on Amazon.

permanentlyfrazzled1 · 02/03/2020 19:30

Twitney If you can work from home, that’s what I’d choose to do. I think doing anything and everything at the moment that makes us each feel more confident about facing this beast is the way to go.

itsnotjustflu · 02/03/2020 19:31

@DominicCummingsForehead did you have to bite your tongue?

Just read a post about how Tesco are preparing to supply and be ready with more of what they expect people to buy over the coming weeks and that they will be ready for mass purchases etc. Still I wouldn't want to have to be the one to go to a supermarket to test this in a worse case scenario. People are missing the point as to why it helps to be ready

FuckThisWind · 02/03/2020 19:33

Another vote for sosmix here. Been using it for about 30 years. Grabbed a couple extra today. Get it before it's gone, folks. We are truly living in strange times.

My 7yo DD has a slight fever and headache this evening. It’s probably completely unrelated to COVID-19 but is definitely giving me the colly wobbles. Now I find she won’t take Calpol melts (of which I have tons) but only calpol liquid (only one bottle). Back to the online shopping basket...

#Algeria reports 2 new #coronavirus cases, bringing the total to 5

Springinsight · 02/03/2020 19:42

Where is the French cases?

Work people went to Disney for a conference.

Dd 8 just said they don't ask the dc to wash their hands before lunch or rather, they ask them to perhaps but do not actually supervise it.

I've posted on another thread about a play date dd had. I asked her friend to wash hands before a smack, turned on tap, ran hand in water briefly. I had to make sure soap was used.
Even then very lack lustre washing.
. Then ate snack and with each bite sunk fingers deep into mouth, then touched things in my table.

I had to get child to then wipe with an antic bac and I wiped what she touched.

My dc never put all the it finger into mouth and don't, never lick fingers it's a huge no no for me.

That's one small vignette. I utterly dread to think what goes on in school. Our school was closed for cleaning but we have not been told whether the dc in question has it or is ok.

Springinsight · 02/03/2020 19:43

Ds2 utterly shocked me today by informing me he'd washed his hands before leaving the classroom so he could eat his snack. Mind you he was feeling extra smug as he already knew how to wash his hands before his headmaster s assembly on hand washing

Destinysdaughter · 02/03/2020 19:51

Watching the ITVprogram about Coronavirus on BBC1. Finding it all a bit patronising and like watching Children in Need tbh...

SharpieInThe · 02/03/2020 19:52

Every one of us means one less family needing help from government/outside agencies/tesco delivery if there's supply problems or panic.

I've seen on other threads we're being blamed for everything bar licking door handles.

You're all such a bloody good bunch and I thank you all for your help.

Six dead in the Seattle area - Reuters just reported

EliK · 02/03/2020 19:53

My DS said they haven't been encouraged to wash hands at all at school. No communication about the virus from school.
How do we go about taking children out of school? I'd prefer it be temporary and keep his place?
I'm going to request to do my uni work from home. Not yet but soon.

UPDATE: Sixth person dies of coronavirus in Snohomish County, WA; no word on their age. The other 5 were all elderly residents at the long-term care home.

Anyone watching Mumsnet founder on 4?

SonjaMorgan · 02/03/2020 19:54

My DC will eat frozen sandwiches. They take them out in the morning and let them defrost in their pack ups. If you didn't use them then they can be used from frozen on a panini press.

What is the best type of cough mix for the type of cough associated with covid-19?
