Prepping For A Pandemic ....9

ItsNotJustTheFuckingFlu · 01/03/2020 23:57

wheresmojo asked at the end of thread eight if other posters could keep an eye on threads filling up and start new ones if possible as she’s busy this week and may not have the time, saw thread 8 getting full so thought would start number 9 before going to bed. Thank you to ofwarren for the live updates too. I’ve copied and pasted the info that wheresmymojo has included in every thread, hopefully formatting doesn’t mess up.

Anxiety

As Preppers we tend to look at a reasonable worst case scenario to plan for. Everyone is welcome on the thread but if you find it makes you anxious be kind to yourself and think about sticking to once daily updates from the BBC or similar thanks Flowers

General COVID Info

The estimated replication rate is R= 2 to 4 based on latest expert estimates. This means each infected person spreads the virus to between 2 and 4 people. Experts estimate that, unchecked, it could infect 60% of the population.

Around 15-20% of cases are thought to be severe - that is resulting in the need for hospitalisation. Around 3-5% requiring ventilation.

The estimated mortality rate is around 1-2% at the moment (compared to 0.01-0.1% for flu). This may change as it is very difficult to estimate mortality.

Children tend to have milder symptoms. Those over 60 with underlying health issues and a history of smoking are more likely to be severe (although not exclusively this type of person).

Spread of COVID

It is estimated that the average incubation period is 3-5 days but can be as long as 24 days.

It can be spread with no symptoms.

It can be spread via droplet (cough/sneeze), aerosol (breathing same air in very close quarters), bodily fluids, fecal/oral route and formites (via surfaces, up to 28 days in the right circumstances but up to 3-5 days in more typical circumstances).

Updates

As this is a novel virus and knowledge is constantly being updated - I will post updates as they become available with links to source.

I am not a medical expert so any opinions or conjecture of my own should be taken with a pinch of salt!

Prepping Scenarios

Most of us are prepping for the following situations:

  • Wanting to stay indoors for 2-4 weeks + in case of a local outbreak / schools being closed
  • Potentially being ill with a flu type illness lasting 2-3 weeks with one or more of the household having the illness
  • Having to take a family member to hospital for COVID or any other reason during an outbreak

Prepping Items

Threads 1&2 have lists of things to think about to prep for the first scenario as do the Brexit prepping threads.

Main differences/additions to something like the Brexit list are:

  • Face masks if you can get them for any trips you have to make in public during an outbreak. These don't offer full protection and cannot be 100% relied upon but are probably better than nothing if you make sure you wear them correctly and dispose of them correctly. N95 masks are best but expensive and harder to wear, surgical face masks are second best. Dust masks are not going to help.
  • Hand sanitiser needs to be 60% or more alcohol content
  • Dettol / bleach / Miltons to disinfect. Not all disinfectants work but these three do
  • Plenty of at home/over counter treatments for flu type symptoms should you need to treat at home
  • Tissues (lots of) should you catch the virus
  • Think about meals that are easy to cook and eat should you be ill or both parents be ill at the same time (soup for example)
  • For a potential hospital trip you may want to prep a 'go bag' should you need to take someone to hospital with the virus (or anything else) during an outbreak. See Thread 1&2 for examples of what people are packing
  • Frequent and thorough hand washing, not touching your face and social distancing (no handshakes, hugs, etc) are some of the most effective ways to stay virus free

Other Thoughts

India have announced that they are stopping exports of some antibiotics, hormone treatments and vitamin supplements as they rely on China for raw materials.

Many factories that supplied fibre for use in sanitary towels and tampons are being diverted to manufacture face masks. Consider stocking up or changing to sustainable items (cloth STs, mooncup, period pants)

If you bulk buy hand gel with a high alcohol content make sure it is stored somewhere safe other than the one you’re using. It is flammable!

ofwarren · 02/03/2020 17:22

URGENT: #ITALY #CORONAVIRUS CASES HAVE PASSED 2.000

Legoandloldolls · 02/03/2020 17:25

I have a 16 year old so I'm hoping one of the three of us over 16 would be action to feed the younger three. There is no where for my kids to go so we will muddle along. If the kids have to eat biscuits, olives and bread so be it for a few weeks.

Dh works in a school and read me a email with phe current advice that says school will not shut with confirmed cases. I guess that could change though.

I'm off to my local Aldi later after 9 once it's quite. I have spent the day cleaning and tidying and I'm going to try really hard to keep on top of everything inside the house as my next prep job.

To think I was quite relaxed at the start of this! I knew it was serious and would spread here, but the reality now its here is a bit different. I had a small Brexit stash and a emergency winter prep, and mercy prep for whatever reason of being stuck in the car ( like trapped on a motorway in snow or a bad crash waiting for the motorway to reopen) but I didnt really think a time would come when I would need it. Yikes! I'm a convert now. But I still planning on building a bunker ( secretly thinks of houses i know with ww2 bunkers in the garden and old gun forts along local rivers 😉)

Legoandloldolls · 02/03/2020 17:27

Sorry NOT planning on building a bunker or am I?

#Senegal Health minister said patient with confirmed coronavirus arrived 26Feb from France. Patient has been living in country for past 2years.

BigChocFrenzy · 02/03/2020 17:30

Someone at the gym (Germany) said her OH sneezed in into her elbow when they were at a museum yesterday
and everybody around them immediated rushed back several paces

BigChocFrenzy · 02/03/2020 17:32

This is why I ordered the nasal spray for my hay fever, even though I don't really need it:

I don't want to scare people if I am sneezing from March-May

Legoandloldolls · 02/03/2020 17:34

Freeze pan o chocolates and brioche for the three year old. They come in their own little wrappers. You can freeze frubes too. Not exactly healthy but full of calories.

BigChocFrenzy · 02/03/2020 17:34

btw, what is it with loo paper ?

I can understand the hand sanitizer, but why does loo roll get bought out in all countries ?

I was in 2 supermarkets today, hunting for a particular spice and in both shops, huge shelve were empty bar a few forlorn rolls
However, everything else was in stock except the hand gels

ofwarren · 02/03/2020 17:34

The number of confirmed cases of coronavirus has reached 90,000. The number of cases outside China has surpassed 10,000.

BigChocFrenzy · 02/03/2020 17:35

Also freeze berries or sliced bananas dipped in chocolate

Legoandloldolls · 02/03/2020 17:36

Also you can get snap.pots of four little ham servings. But if it was my younger two, they would eat the lot in two days. My teen would eat the lot before I unpacked it. That's my main worry. They are skinny rakes but eat like locusts

ofwarren · 02/03/2020 17:37

From today's @WHO #Covid19 briefing: Someone from WHO's Iran country office has contracted the virus.

For people asking about meals for younger children- batch cook some meals and put them in children portions to freeze and write on the tub with a sharpie pen how many minutes required for it to be put in the microwave to reheat.

Also could make waffles and freeze , pull them out of the freezer and put in the toaster to defrost/reheat.

Also stumbled across foil packet meals, I believe you are able to freeze these.

Preppers thank you. You gave me some advice on what to shop for and we definitely needed it as dd was tested yesterday! Please keep your fingers crossed that she's clear and we get the results asap

FourTeaFallOut · 02/03/2020 17:53

Best of luck @mogloveseggs Flowers

Puppycorn · 02/03/2020 17:56

reach to package for younger kids ideas - Cereals (Kellogg’s and nestle do little taster boxes), cereal bars, various flavours of vegetable and potato crisps, ellas kitchen stage 1 baby fruit purée, veg purée pouches, juice cartons, raisins, treat bags of cookies, various biscuits and Multigrain digestives, jelly’s, ambrosia rice pudding, rice cakes, dry fruit tubs like apricots, peaches, pringles (opened tins of complan and Horlivka (I have so far allowed dd to have a spoon and she knows she can’t eat more)

Puppycorn · 02/03/2020 17:58

Sorry I forgot bread 😂

FreezerBird · 02/03/2020 18:03

For older kids who don't routinely use washing machine, dishwasher etc:

My ds (15) really struggles with following written instructions so I have done videos of how to put the dishwasher, washing machine on and whatsapped them to him so he can refer to them whenever.

(This is for everyday life rather than prepping but might be useful for someone.)

My worry if DH and I were both ill is that our youngest has medical issues which mean we can't just pack her off somewhere else, and it would be difficult for ds to look after her. I have a file on my computer ("the manual") with details of all her medications, routines etc which I update whenever she goes on a residential with school or has a new carer. So I'm going to make sure that's up to date.

So much of this is stuff that I often think I should do anyway but this has given me the impetus - because I'm with DD much more day to day, even DH would struggle a little bit to get to grips with it all if I was suddenly out of action. So really this info should be up to date and easily accessible all the time. (Same with having a couple of weeks worth of food in. When you think about it, it's just sensible anyway isn't it. In a scenario when you'd need it you're likely to be under stress for some external reason so I think prepping is in part preparing to have less to think about in a difficult time, whatever that may be.)

Also - probably less relevant for this but good practice generally I think - if you've anyone with disabilities/medical needs in the house check whether your utilities have any sort of priority service. We need a supply of clean water because of DC's medical issues so we're registered with the water company's priority services so if the water's off for any reason we are on their priority list for bottled water.

Puppycorn · 02/03/2020 18:08

Horlicks* .. also I’m not teaching microwaving now as it’s not safe for her to operate anything like that. We don’t have anyone living near either. But I have taught her our house address and also how to call her aunt in NZ and grandparents in India with my phone if need be.

applesandpears33 · 02/03/2020 18:08

Could anyone recommend some powdered mashed potato? I tried smash many years ago and wasn't impressed with it. Is there anything better on the market?

justchecking1 · 02/03/2020 18:08

nogloveseggs, can I ask why your DD was tested? Has she travelled or was it contact with a known case? Or just symptoms? The criteria for getting tested seem to vary widely from place to place so just interested

FreezerBird · 02/03/2020 18:11

Instant mash - I've heard people speak highly of Idaho brand.
