Prepping For A Pandemic ....9

ItsNotJustTheFuckingFlu · 01/03/2020 23:57

wheresmojo asked at the end of thread eight if other posters could keep an eye on threads filling up and start new ones if possible as she’s busy this week and may not have the time, saw thread 8 getting full so thought would start number 9 before going to bed. Thank you to ofwarren for the live updates too. I’ve copied and pasted the info that wheresmymojo has included in every thread, hopefully formatting doesn’t mess up.

Anxiety

As Preppers we tend to look at a reasonable worst case scenario to plan for. Everyone is welcome on the thread but if you find it makes you anxious be kind to yourself and think about sticking to once daily updates from the BBC or similar thanks Flowers

General COVID Info

The estimated replication rate is R= 2 to 4 based on latest expert estimates. This means each infected person spreads the virus to between 2 and 4 people. Experts estimate that, unchecked, it could infect 60% of the population.

Around 15-20% of cases are thought to be severe - that is resulting in the need for hospitalisation. Around 3-5% requiring ventilation.

The estimated mortality rate is around 1-2% at the moment (compared to 0.01-0.1% for flu). This may change as it is very difficult to estimate mortality.

Children tend to have milder symptoms. Those over 60 with underlying health issues and a history of smoking are more likely to be severe (although not exclusively this type of person).

Spread of COVID

It is estimated that the average incubation period is 3-5 days but can be as long as 24 days.

It can be spread with no symptoms.

It can be spread via droplet (cough/sneeze), aerosol (breathing same air in very close quarters), bodily fluids, fecal/oral route and formites (via surfaces, up to 28 days in the right circumstances but up to 3-5 days in more typical circumstances).

Updates

As this is a novel virus and knowledge is constantly being updated - I will post updates as they become available with links to source.

I am not a medical expert so any opinions or conjecture of my own should be taken with a pinch of salt!

Prepping Scenarios

Most of us are prepping for the following situations:

  • Wanting to stay indoors for 2-4 weeks + in case of a local outbreak / schools being closed
  • Potentially being ill with a flu type illness lasting 2-3 weeks with one or more of the household having the illness
  • Having to take a family member to hospital for COVID or any other reason during an outbreak

Prepping Items

Threads 1&2 have lists of things to think about to prep for the first scenario as do the Brexit prepping threads.

Main differences/additions to something like the Brexit list are:

  • Face masks if you can get them for any trips you have to make in public during an outbreak. These don't offer full protection and cannot be 100% relied upon but are probably better than nothing if you make sure you wear them correctly and dispose of them correctly. N95 masks are best but expensive and harder to wear, surgical face masks are second best. Dust masks are not going to help.
  • Hand sanitiser needs to be 60% or more alcohol content
  • Dettol / bleach / Miltons to disinfect. Not all disinfectants work but these three do
  • Plenty of at home/over counter treatments for flu type symptoms should you need to treat at home
  • Tissues (lots of) should you catch the virus
  • Think about meals that are easy to cook and eat should you be ill or both parents be ill at the same time (soup for example)
  • For a potential hospital trip you may want to prep a 'go bag' should you need to take someone to hospital with the virus (or anything else) during an outbreak. See Thread 1&2 for examples of what people are packing
  • Frequent and thorough hand washing, not touching your face and social distancing (no handshakes, hugs, etc) are some of the most effective ways to stay virus free

Other Thoughts

India have announced that they are stopping exports of some antibiotics, hormone treatments and vitamin supplements as they rely on China for raw materials.

Many factories that supplied fibre for use in sanitary towels and tampons are being diverted to manufacture face masks. Consider stocking up or changing to sustainable items (cloth STs, mooncup, period pants)

If you bulk buy hand gel with a high alcohol content make sure it is stored somewhere safe other than the one you’re using. It is flammable!

That rubbing alcohol from amazon has a 1-2 month date for dispatch! Unfortunately that is the case for most similar things on amazon now.

That's weird - for me it was showing as next day delivery on prime.
how about this one

BlackeyedSusan · 02/03/2020 14:04

Only four more? Worried it would be more.

AuntImmortelle · 02/03/2020 14:05

Surprised at only 40. I was expecting a larger jump.

ofwarren · 02/03/2020 14:05

New cases are in Hertfordshire, devon and Kent

Tinnednut · 02/03/2020 14:06

Only 4 more is good news.
How long does testing take?

Justmum89 · 02/03/2020 14:08

When they release the figures they say how many concluded tests. Do we have figures anywhere for how many tests taken with outstanding results? People who have been linked to other cases seem to get their results published on the following days figures but then other people speaking to media as been waiting days on end and some told 7-10 days?

wheresmymojo · 02/03/2020 14:09

I was also surprised only 4...good news though.

EliK · 02/03/2020 14:11

@Justmum89 good point. This could be absolute rubbish but someone I know said they know someone who got tested and it took 4 days to come back (negative).

rhij86 · 02/03/2020 14:11

Just popped to the small co-op near office on lunch break. No hand sanitizer, or anti-bac spray. Their dettol anti-bac wipes were £1.90 each or 2 for £2 - 6 packs left so I grabbed those (will get used eventually one way or another with a 1YO at home!)

@wheresmymojo - thanks for the info.

Just seen this on the independent. Not sure how accurate but is the 1 death the guy from the DP? Or is this a death in the UK?

I normally wait outside school for Ds to remind him to go to sport club. don't fancy doing that today. May go and park the car near by and watch for him from there.

FourTeaFallOut · 02/03/2020 14:29

We're tackling coronavirus by planning for the worst and working for the best.

According to a recent Daily Mail article that kind of attitude makes you a hysterical idiot worthy of a lazy article and general derision. Confused

FourTeaFallOut · 02/03/2020 14:31

Yes, that death is the Diamond Princess fatality.

SkyesBackPack · 02/03/2020 14:32

I’m surprised it’s not higher as well. I feel less stressed now my house has been cleaned. It’s hard not letting yourself be consumed by this 24/7 now, or is it just me?

Justmum89 · 02/03/2020 14:33

Thankyou. I wasn't sure if that was being included in UK figures.

WeBuiltCisCityOnSexistRoles · 02/03/2020 14:34

They love a fucking slogan, don't they? Hmm

ItsNotJustTheFuckingFlu · 02/03/2020 14:35

For those struggling to get Dettol products, amazon still has multi value packs of various products like the wipes, fabric spray, laundry cleanse and this all purpose cleaner.

https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B00FQHNEUA?ref=ppxpt22mobbbprod_image

A few people have mentioned buying cheap oxygen saturation monitors on amazon, I'd be really really careful with the cheap generic health related products sold by 3rd parties on there, it's rife with sellers offering products in exchange for refunds if they leave a positive review on loads of products like power banks, smart watches etc and health equipment too, if you see a generic white label item with hundreds or thousands of reviews alongside reviews showing photos of product in the packaging it arrives in, they're often fake reviews.

Some generic products can be great, but there's a lot of junk being made to look better than it is because of the inflated reviews.

Essential oils diffuser have also been mentioned a few times, I got rid of mine when getting a dog as they made her sneeze like fuck, I wasn't aware that they can cause problems for some pets so that's worth keeping in mind too.

Went out to get few more bits and Bob's. I have not been panic buying in mass bulk as been prepping properly since wuhan lockdown too. Most the medical stuff I got right away.

Just added:
Batteries for thermometers
More cat food
Poundland had dettol so grabbed 1 as was lots
No hand gel in all 6 shops I went in
Lucozade
Cystitis powders (am prone to it dont wanna run out lol)
More shower gel (I always have to shower lots when looking after sick people)
Vaseline

Also talc in hair is what we use on the ward for tangles after being in bed. It does work!

ifonly4 · 02/03/2020 14:44

Went to Tescos around 2pm. It's eerily quiet in there. The only thing I wanted that was out of stock was frozen broccoli, but levels are low in every aisle I went in - guess many went early. Luckily it's just a case of keeping fresh and frozen items stocked up, and replacing other items we use.

itsnotjustflu · 02/03/2020 14:46

thanks @FelicityFebruary ah she has no real authority then phew.

Yes 4 new does seem low. Good news though for now

Fourducksate · 02/03/2020 14:51

I home Ed ds for two months whilst waiting for a school place after we moved. There are so many good websites.

Check on Twinkl for worksheets and Corbett Maths is really good for Yrs 9 10 and 11. If you find out what board exams your children do, you can go to their website ie AQA and download previous exam questions, exemplar answers etc.

A lot of these are free to join and whilst you are limited to what you can access, nice you have registered, they send you free codes to use on the stuff that might be locked to you.

Also go in the TES website, you can register there free and it gives access to a lot of resources.

For younger ones Doodle Maths for the iPad is fantastic, my dd Jumped two age groups in 6 months. It keeps assessing and pushes suitable level questions forward.

Check at school if they use My Maths, Purple Maths or any other on line programme.

Just been to Sainsbury's.
No hand gel at all. No apple juice, no UHT milk full fat, low on big bags of pasta. Not much paracetamol. No dime bars. Angry
