Prepping for a pandemic....8

8th thread on prepping for a pandemic and following the risk of a COVID pandemic.

Anxiety

As Preppers we tend to look at a reasonable worst case scenario to plan for. Everyone is welcome on the thread but if you find it makes you anxious be kind to yourself and think about sticking to once daily updates from the BBC or similar Thanks

General COVID Info

The estimated replication rate is R= 2 to 4 based on latest expert estimates. This means each infected person spreads the virus to between 2 and 4 people. Experts estimate that, unchecked, it could infect 60% of the population.

Around 15-20% of cases are thought to be severe - that is resulting in the need for hospitalisation. Around 3-5% requiring ventilation.

The estimated mortality rate is around 1-2% at the moment (compared to 0.01-0.1% for flu). This may change as it is very difficult to estimate mortality.

Children tend to have milder symptoms. Those over 60 with underlying health issues and a history of smoking are more likely to be severe (although not exclusively this type of person).

Spread of COVID

It is estimated that the average incubation period is 3-5 days but can be as long as 24 days.

It can be spread with no symptoms.

It can be spread via droplet (cough/sneeze), aerosol (breathing same air in very close quarters), bodily fluids, fecal/oral route and formites (via surfaces, up to 28 days in the right circumstances but up to 3-5 days in more typical circumstances).

Updates

As this is a novel virus and knowledge is constantly being updated - I will post updates as they become available with links to source.

I am not a medical expert so any opinions or conjecture of my own should be taken with a pinch of salt!

Prepping Scenarios

Most of us are prepping for the following situations:

  • Wanting to stay indoors for 2-4 weeks + in case of a local outbreak / schools being closed
  • Potentially being ill with a flu type illness lasting 2-3 weeks with one or more of the household having the illness
  • Having to take a family member to hospital for COVID or any other reason during an outbreak

Prepping Items

Threads 1&2 have lists of things to think about to prep for the first scenario as do the Brexit prepping threads.

Main differences/additions to something like the Brexit list are:

  • Face masks if you can get them for any trips you have to make in public during an outbreak. These don't offer full protection and cannot be 100% relied upon but are probably better than nothing if you make sure you wear them correctly and dispose of them correctly. N95 masks are best but expensive and harder to wear, surgical face masks are second best. Dust masks are not going to help.
  • Hand sanitiser needs to be 60% or more alcohol content
  • Dettol / bleach / Miltons to disinfect. Not all disinfectants work but these three do
  • Plenty of at home/over counter treatments for flu type symptoms should you need to treat at home
  • Tissues (lots of) should you catch the virus
  • Think about meals that are easy to cook and eat should you be ill or both parents be ill at the same time (soup for example)
  • For a potential hospital trip you may want to prep a 'go bag' should you need to take someone to hospital with the virus (or anything else) during an outbreak. See Thread 1&2 for examples of what people are packing
  • Frequent and thorough hand washing, not touching your face and social distancing (no handshakes, hugs, etc) are some of the most effective ways to stay virus free

Other Thoughts

India have announced that they are stopping exports of some antibiotics, hormone treatments and vitamin supplements as they rely on China for raw materials.

Many factories that supplied fibre for use in sanitary towels and tampons are being diverted to manufacture face masks. Consider stocking up or changing to sustainable items (cloth STs, mooncup, period pants)

If you bulk buy hand gel with a high alcohol content make sure it is stored somewhere safe other than the one you’re using. It is flammable!

Regarding fruit and veg, you can freeze pretty much anything, although some stuff says to blanch First. Carrots, broccoli, cauliflower, things like that I always blanch. I’ve got leeks and cabbage etc frozen from raw, but I chop into portion sizes first, freeze as a flat layer and then decant into Tupperware.

Ordering another big shop today. I don't need any more tins as I have so many but I'm going to get some more dried goods, coffee, meat for the fridge and freezer and attempt to get more hang gel and other cleaning type things.

ofwarren · 29/02/2020 08:15

Also need lots of cat food and cat litter as a cat that was stray who now lives here is due kittens any day..

Paperdollss · 29/02/2020 08:18

Which is the best cleaning product to use aside from bleach? I notice that lots of them state anti bacterial but not many mention anti viral

MsJaneAusten · 29/02/2020 08:20

I’m new to prepping. I have some bits, but none of it really ordered. My biggest concern in a lock down scenario. I’m considering getting four plastic boxes today and dividing my stuff into it so that I’m confident that each box will give us a week’s worth of food. Then in a lockdown situation I will have an idea of how to ration it - a week or two on what’s in our normal cupboards, knowing I’ve got a month’s worth of meals in boxes in the loft. Is that a bonkers idea or do other people have it boxed off?

FoxRedBitch · 29/02/2020 08:21

I'm going to prep buy stocking up on paint and paint brushes. At least if we are quarantined and we are well we can re Dec the house and sort through all of our stuff.

AlohaMolly · 29/02/2020 08:21

MrsJaneAusten I think that’s a brilliant idea personally!

Washington state high school student who tested positive for coronavirus was feeling better this morning and attempted to return to school. Then positive result came in, student was notified, and went home before attending class.

Paperdollss · 29/02/2020 08:22

Have been following the threads, I don’t have the money to go out and do a full on prep but have been adding a few extra bits to the weekly shop.
I’m a bit worried as we have a close relative in prison, obviously visits may become restricted over the next few weeks but I’m worried as there have been lots of reported cases of TB in prisons over the last few months. Any advice would be really appreciated

Newyearsameoldme2020 · 29/02/2020 08:23

@Paperdollss

Lots (but not all) of the dettol cleaning products say they kill 99.9 percent of bacteria and viruses

Flyingsouthwiththeswallows · 29/02/2020 08:24

I am with you Wetcappuccino on not eating out, but have also extended that to not eating any pre-prepared / uncooked foods such as bagged salads, Quiches, sandwiches etc.

I am very suspicious that food may have been the transmission method on the cruise ship and have just decided that all our food will be home cooked until this is over.

MsJaneAusten · 29/02/2020 08:32

Importantly, I’ve also just ordered loads of coffee - online, from the comfort of my bed.

Based on the painting suggestion, I think I’ll also pick up gardening supplies today. In an “everyone I know is okay, but I can’t leave my property” situation, I’ll definitely want something to do!

On that, I live quite rurally, with lots of walks nearby where we never see anyone. We’d still be able to do those in lock down, right?

bodgeitandscarper · 29/02/2020 08:33

ofwarren You're probably aware, but I'd get wood litter for the cat, the kittens will try to eat litter and if it's clumping or silica it can be dangerous. Off to get some coal for the burner today and possibly some last minute bits. Don't fancy being stuck without fuel if the shtf.

ofwarren · 29/02/2020 08:34

No I didn't know bodge 😱 thanks for telling me!
I'm such a newbie cat mum. I've been reading stuff but never heard that one. Thanks so much!

GeistohneGrenzen · 29/02/2020 08:35

.

Newyearsameoldme2020 · 29/02/2020 08:36

Along the lines of flyingsouths post, I'm just wondering are you cleaning things before bringing them into the house, or is that a step OTT?
For instance, a food shop delivery I will be receiving today, how many hands has that been handled by before getting to me? Should I be wiping them down before putting stuff into the cupboards?

GorkyMcPorky · 29/02/2020 08:36

Looking at those figures for China, they've been very savvy in largely containing it in Hubei (poor Hubei). I think they will rise out of this relatively unscathed compared to the rest of the world. Look at the stuff they've been spraying all over their streets and they're still getting cases!

EducatingArti · 29/02/2020 08:37

Depends what type of lockdown Jane. If it is a lockdown like the towns in Italy, then yes, you'd be able to go out and about within the lockdown area. If you are in self-isolation because of direct contact with and infected person, then no, you wouldn't be able to leave the house.

ofwarren · 29/02/2020 08:41

I haven't yet NewYear but I will be if/when the cases ramp up here. I think transmission by that route is not really a risk in the UK at the moment.
