Prepping for a pandemic....8

8th thread on prepping for a pandemic and following the risk of a COVID pandemic.

Anxiety

As Preppers we tend to look at a reasonable worst case scenario to plan for. Everyone is welcome on the thread but if you find it makes you anxious be kind to yourself and think about sticking to once daily updates from the BBC or similar Thanks

General COVID Info

The estimated replication rate is R= 2 to 4 based on latest expert estimates. This means each infected person spreads the virus to between 2 and 4 people. Experts estimate that, unchecked, it could infect 60% of the population.

Around 15-20% of cases are thought to be severe - that is resulting in the need for hospitalisation. Around 3-5% requiring ventilation.

The estimated mortality rate is around 1-2% at the moment (compared to 0.01-0.1% for flu). This may change as it is very difficult to estimate mortality.

Children tend to have milder symptoms. Those over 60 with underlying health issues and a history of smoking are more likely to be severe (although not exclusively this type of person).

Spread of COVID

It is estimated that the average incubation period is 3-5 days but can be as long as 24 days.

It can be spread with no symptoms.

It can be spread via droplet (cough/sneeze), aerosol (breathing same air in very close quarters), bodily fluids, fecal/oral route and formites (via surfaces, up to 28 days in the right circumstances but up to 3-5 days in more typical circumstances).

Updates

As this is a novel virus and knowledge is constantly being updated - I will post updates as they become available with links to source.

I am not a medical expert so any opinions or conjecture of my own should be taken with a pinch of salt!

Prepping Scenarios

Most of us are prepping for the following situations:

  • Wanting to stay indoors for 2-4 weeks + in case of a local outbreak / schools being closed
  • Potentially being ill with a flu type illness lasting 2-3 weeks with one or more of the household having the illness
  • Having to take a family member to hospital for COVID or any other reason during an outbreak

Prepping Items

Threads 1&2 have lists of things to think about to prep for the first scenario as do the Brexit prepping threads.

Main differences/additions to something like the Brexit list are:

  • Face masks if you can get them for any trips you have to make in public during an outbreak. These don't offer full protection and cannot be 100% relied upon but are probably better than nothing if you make sure you wear them correctly and dispose of them correctly. N95 masks are best but expensive and harder to wear, surgical face masks are second best. Dust masks are not going to help.
  • Hand sanitiser needs to be 60% or more alcohol content
  • Dettol / bleach / Miltons to disinfect. Not all disinfectants work but these three do
  • Plenty of at home/over counter treatments for flu type symptoms should you need to treat at home
  • Tissues (lots of) should you catch the virus
  • Think about meals that are easy to cook and eat should you be ill or both parents be ill at the same time (soup for example)
  • For a potential hospital trip you may want to prep a 'go bag' should you need to take someone to hospital with the virus (or anything else) during an outbreak. See Thread 1&2 for examples of what people are packing
  • Frequent and thorough hand washing, not touching your face and social distancing (no handshakes, hugs, etc) are some of the most effective ways to stay virus free

Other Thoughts

India have announced that they are stopping exports of some antibiotics, hormone treatments and vitamin supplements as they rely on China for raw materials.

Many factories that supplied fibre for use in sanitary towels and tampons are being diverted to manufacture face masks. Consider stocking up or changing to sustainable items (cloth STs, mooncup, period pants)

If you bulk buy hand gel with a high alcohol content make sure it is stored somewhere safe other than the one you’re using. It is flammable!

Morning all. I'm concerned that the emergency measures include class size increases in schools in the event of teacher shortages. So much for us containing the virus and closing schools like other countries! (Source www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-51684624 top news story BBC news page 'hunt for source of UK infected case' in case link fails)

In more prep news, I think I have most of my shopping done. Cupboards are full but nothing will be wasted as I only bought our usual but in bigger numbers.

Our large Tesco were selling multi-packs of baked beans and spaghetti at a reduced price, I assume because they are phasing them out due to the single use plastic, so it may be worth a quick look.

TheGirlFromStoryville · 29/02/2020 08:46

I've finally got DH on board with my prepping. He suggested ordering another chest freezer for the garage so that's getting delivered on Tuesday.
Aldi had large bottles of hand sanitiser for £1.99 so stocked up on that.

Ds's school is one of the ones affected by the ski trip - none of ds's year went but yesterday a boy from his year collapsed in school - not sure if anything to do with CV? Haven't had any updates but v worrying.

I'm going to do another big shop online - my aim is to have a clear month's worth of food and supplies.

If we do have to stay indoors, Ds will be fine as long as there's WiFi.
I have lots of books to get through, and various knitting projects to start and finish.
DH has lots of paint in so is planning on redecorating downstairs.

Think this is the calm before the storm.

poshme · 29/02/2020 08:47

@tinnednut you can buy ice pops that dot in the shelf & you can freeze them a couple at a time. Saves freezer space.
Or buy a lolly mould & freeze juice or squash.

Garlic- I use garlic in a tube (like tomato puree) lasts for ages even when open.
(Adds more garlic purée to ever - growing shopping list for this week)

MsJaneAusten · 29/02/2020 08:51

The class size thing is a bit of a red herring though isn’t it?

I think only reception classes are legally capped at 30, others can be any size, at the head’s discretion.

numberonecook · 29/02/2020 08:55

I study epidemiology and it’s great to come here and see people taking the Coronavirus seriously. A lot of people are hanging onto the fact that most people are getting better if they are fit and well but they are not considering the effect on the people who are more at risk if they are spending the virus around.

My DH has a respiratory condition so we are starting to prep. We already have a supply of tins and dried goods, freezer is full of veg soups. We have masks, gloves and a huge bottle of sanitiser. We also stocked up on things we may need to home school if I stop my girls going to school.

Snowdropdelight · 29/02/2020 08:57

Morning everyone, it seems freezers are going to get lots of love and attention this weekend including ours 😂.

Dh has forgone his usual park run and has instead headed into town to try and track down hand gel, I didn't ask him to.
Also for the first time ever I decided to buy a scratch card last night and won 20 quid! Which will help to buy these new supplies.

The library method!! What a brilliant idea! I'd already started to freeze soups in shapes that are easier to stack but that's brilliant.

I'll feel better after today's stock take, and freezer audit and de frost.

I couldn't complete ocado order last night and non of the wipes or hand gel was available for delivery. Then nationwide went down and couldn't process it either!

Snowdropdelight · 29/02/2020 08:58

I've already developed an irritating cough, dc have heavy colds... I wonder how much covid compromises people who already have infections even if, generally in the scheme of things they are mild?

Tryingnottobesociallyawkward · 29/02/2020 09:07

Working in a secondary school, I can say increasing sizes will just be a babysitting measure to enable parents to work. Apart from the fact our classrooms can't take many more students, what learning will be done in classes where there are now (?) 10+ extra students. The teachers won't know their needs, differentiation will be difficult, behaviour management will be interesting.

I worry about children as carriers too. They don't appear to get as ill, but that isn't don't get ill and frankly, their hygiene is awful. So they continue using public transport, going in the local shops passing on the illness to others who will be more affected.

WeBuiltCisCityOnSexistRoles · 29/02/2020 09:07

Thank you for new thread.

I had an essential hospital trip and saw so many people not using the hand Gel/coughing and putting their hands on the seats, doors etc. I don't think I saw a single person using a tissue. I'm now weighing up the risk/benefit ratio for medical appointments I have coming up.

And another worrying aspect was that on the bus home I was coughing (into a tissue and disposing, I also used handgel when I sat down) and everyone was giving me the side eye. The coughing is from a respiratory issue atm which well predates CV and isn't infectious but of course other people don't know that. The government advice which has become more general "avoid the unwell" makes me worry for the public reaction to those of us with long-standing health issues but don't have a reason/haven't been advised to self isolate and have to go out. As if the respiratory thing wasn't worrying enough

I suppose if it gets very bad here, Medical appointments will be cancelled anyway as the NHS won't have the capacity.

I shall try and take comfort in the fact that thanks to this thread I can minimise going out and be more comfortable at home. (My local supermarket looked like Christmas Eve yesterday when I went past it, car park full and people queuing on the road to get in)

WeBuiltCisCityOnSexistRoles · 29/02/2020 09:11

Oh, also the "larger class sizes" (as well as making me roll my eyes right out of my head for the poor bloody teachers!) made me think about those of us with DCs in non mainstream settings, or with 1-2-1 support in mainstream. I suppose a lot of us would be Home Edding in those scenarios - it might be worth contacting schools/support services to plan re resources/topics coming up?

(I'm so glad I've prepped the shit out of this as I have so many other worries that didn't occur to me and require lots of tea and cake to solve)

echobench · 29/02/2020 09:12

@MsJaneAusten I haven’t got boxes by week. I’ve got 2 weeks or so of more interesting food then it gets a bit boring!

ofwarren · 29/02/2020 09:14

I know it's an obvious point but make sure you have a good heavy duty tin opener if lots of your prep is tins.
Ours totally snapped last night so I've just ordered a new one from Amazon.
I would have been stuck if we were in lock down. I think might buy one of the old fashioned blade ones to put away too as they can't break.

sideorderofchips · 29/02/2020 09:21

Morning all

My wholesale meat order was delivered last night so will be portioning that to freeze.

My emergency supply is looking good under my bed right now, just need to get more tinned/frozen fruit and treat stuff now

Got 30l of wood pellet cat litter and on the way 94 pouches of cat food and 60 bog rolls

1plus3plus1 · 29/02/2020 09:23

Hi all, long time lurker here but very grateful for all the info.
With 4 young kids, I've also been thinking about how I would cope at home if schools did shut or we had to self isolate - my conclusion is that I'm going to have to be quite strict with a structure for the day or we'll end up very grumpy with each other.
For example, on the odd weekend previously where I've let them watch lots of TV, they've become horrible brats fighting among themselves!
So, I'm considering doing the following:

Morning breakfast/getting dressed/making bed routine as normal
"School" for a couple of hours where everyone does some reading and writing and maths and art etc
"Breaktime" where I shove them out into the garden to bounce on the trampoline whatever the weather
Lunch
"Project time" - jigsaw/Lego/board games/arts and crafts/music - everyone gets their own choice, maybe some dancing to try and get them moving
"Tidy up time"
Supper
Screen time before bed

I just think if I don't do something like the above, we might be ok for the first couple of days but after 3-4 days we'll be at each other's throats.

Anyone else thinking along the same lines?

GorkyMcPorky · 29/02/2020 09:23

I'm concerned that the emergency measures include class size increases in schools in the event of teacher shortages

Me too. Teachers will be exposed to many asymptomatic carriers and this will only work as long as we don't fall ill ourselves. What about the viral load theory explaining the deaths of younger medics? That could be a problem for anyone facing large groups of carriers.

ofwarren · 29/02/2020 09:30

1plus I totally agree that some structure will be needed. It's just chaotic for them otherwise.
My 4 and 5 year old end up fighting if I don't intervene with things to do occasionally.

pemberlyshades · 29/02/2020 09:31

@1plus3 totally agree- I've been thinking about "projects" using the books/resources we already have- so far I've got feminism and space projects

ChipotleBlessing · 29/02/2020 09:32

The class size thing is clearly a made up emergency message to look like they’re doing something. It doesn’t need legislation to be possible. Also there’s no cost. If they actually wanted to help they would be announcing funding for supply teachers, deep cleans, online schooling programmes. The government are reaping the rewards for their austerity programme here and the rest of us will suffer.

wheresmymojo · 29/02/2020 09:32

Also need lots of cat food and cat litter as a cat that was stray who now lives here is due kittens any day.

I believe kitten pics will be a very calming addition to the thread Grin

She is absolutely massive now wheresmymojo
Vet said due any day between last week and the end of first week of march.
She just lies down all the time now, legs akimbo 😁

wheresmymojo · 29/02/2020 09:44

I'm a very experienced cat person - I've had 21 of my own (if I include family cats growing up) and have fostered about ten for Cats Protection including preggos and kittens so feel free to ask me about anything.

I'm quite jealous - a house full of kittens is a pretty good distraction if you're stuck in the house once they start walking Grin

DominicCummingsForehead · 29/02/2020 09:45

@1plus3plus1 your plan for the day sounds great and I will attempt to implement very similar. My middle dd is mildly autistic and needs structure. It's going to be very challenging 👀

CrapTVAddict · 29/02/2020 09:49

Can someone tell me what the class size measures are? I must have missed that. Are the govt increasing class sizes if teachers Ill or schools shut?

ofwarren · 29/02/2020 09:50

Oh that's great wheresmymojo! I will be asking lots of questions expect.
I've had a cat before, but a male. I've never even SEEN an animal give birth in real life.
I have watched lots of YouTube videos in preparation. I think I'm ready, I just need her to go into labour now!

BlackeyedSusan · 29/02/2020 09:56

I imagine she thinks the same...
