Prepping for a pandemic....8

8th thread on prepping for a pandemic and following the risk of a COVID pandemic.

Anxiety

As Preppers we tend to look at a reasonable worst case scenario to plan for. Everyone is welcome on the thread but if you find it makes you anxious be kind to yourself and think about sticking to once daily updates from the BBC or similar Thanks

General COVID Info

The estimated replication rate is R= 2 to 4 based on latest expert estimates. This means each infected person spreads the virus to between 2 and 4 people. Experts estimate that, unchecked, it could infect 60% of the population.

Around 15-20% of cases are thought to be severe - that is resulting in the need for hospitalisation. Around 3-5% requiring ventilation.

The estimated mortality rate is around 1-2% at the moment (compared to 0.01-0.1% for flu). This may change as it is very difficult to estimate mortality.

Children tend to have milder symptoms. Those over 60 with underlying health issues and a history of smoking are more likely to be severe (although not exclusively this type of person).

Spread of COVID

It is estimated that the average incubation period is 3-5 days but can be as long as 24 days.

It can be spread with no symptoms.

It can be spread via droplet (cough/sneeze), aerosol (breathing same air in very close quarters), bodily fluids, fecal/oral route and formites (via surfaces, up to 28 days in the right circumstances but up to 3-5 days in more typical circumstances).

Updates

As this is a novel virus and knowledge is constantly being updated - I will post updates as they become available with links to source.

I am not a medical expert so any opinions or conjecture of my own should be taken with a pinch of salt!

Prepping Scenarios

Most of us are prepping for the following situations:

  • Wanting to stay indoors for 2-4 weeks + in case of a local outbreak / schools being closed
  • Potentially being ill with a flu type illness lasting 2-3 weeks with one or more of the household having the illness
  • Having to take a family member to hospital for COVID or any other reason during an outbreak

Prepping Items

Threads 1&2 have lists of things to think about to prep for the first scenario as do the Brexit prepping threads.

Main differences/additions to something like the Brexit list are:

  • Face masks if you can get them for any trips you have to make in public during an outbreak. These don't offer full protection and cannot be 100% relied upon but are probably better than nothing if you make sure you wear them correctly and dispose of them correctly. N95 masks are best but expensive and harder to wear, surgical face masks are second best. Dust masks are not going to help.
  • Hand sanitiser needs to be 60% or more alcohol content
  • Dettol / bleach / Miltons to disinfect. Not all disinfectants work but these three do
  • Plenty of at home/over counter treatments for flu type symptoms should you need to treat at home
  • Tissues (lots of) should you catch the virus
  • Think about meals that are easy to cook and eat should you be ill or both parents be ill at the same time (soup for example)
  • For a potential hospital trip you may want to prep a 'go bag' should you need to take someone to hospital with the virus (or anything else) during an outbreak. See Thread 1&2 for examples of what people are packing
  • Frequent and thorough hand washing, not touching your face and social distancing (no handshakes, hugs, etc) are some of the most effective ways to stay virus free

Other Thoughts

India have announced that they are stopping exports of some antibiotics, hormone treatments and vitamin supplements as they rely on China for raw materials.

Many factories that supplied fibre for use in sanitary towels and tampons are being diverted to manufacture face masks. Consider stocking up or changing to sustainable items (cloth STs, mooncup, period pants)

If you bulk buy hand gel with a high alcohol content make sure it is stored somewhere safe other than the one you’re using. It is flammable!

The hashtag #panicbuying on Twitter is interesting. Looks like some people in America are starting to get worried.

If the Haslemere case was a commuter ( I have no idea) I guess they might have been asked to keep quite? It’s a busy train line. But I’m speculating. I just presume they don’t want lots of finger pointing etc. I wouldn’t if it was me.

HasaDigaEebowai · 01/03/2020 22:24

puppycorn keep it simple. You don’t want to be buying masses of ingredients when you are sticking up. Just buy jars of different ready made sauces even if you wouldn’t ordinarily use them. The aim is to get you through as easily as possible.

HasaDigaEebowai · 01/03/2020 22:25

Also keep in mind you might be Ill in which case you’re unlikely to be wanting to cook much

JustMeAndMyTins · 01/03/2020 22:25

@katienana I thought that too. Steve and then the UK-based group he passed it to both issued statements saying they were ok. I’m assuming no.9 is not because that person is still ‘active’ and I think we knew they were in a bad way (but I could have made that up).

The others are still active and a lot are fairly newly diagnosed in the UK but I haven’t seen much from other countries. I guess it’s hard for Chinese people to speak out but there are recovered people elsewhere too at this point...

There was a Brit in Wuhan who called LBC but he had it at the beginning and didn’t even know he did until he rang for his test results (out of curiosity) once recovered! Obviously the Abels vlog from Japan but they aren’t over it yet. I struggle to watch that though! (But it’s nice to see they’re doing well).

Puppycorn · 01/03/2020 22:29

@VenetoResident That’s well thought out actually. I have been ordering online only for the past few weeks. When they set up isolation facilities here in MK it caused quite a worry among the local community esp mums here as the facility was near schools etc. So got quite used to ordering online now. I cleared out some of my cupboard space yesterday which was quite a relief to be honest.(but was very half hearted in throwing away some expired unused stuff that would have been very much useful but I didn’t even know it existed) Ordered few whey protein things like stuff from costco to keep up on the proteins if need be (lacto-vegetarian diet). Dh thinks I’m borderline crazy to not allow him go to gym (pretends to fuss around but he is pleased inside and will happily blame the virus for not working out if it was his own choice lol)

JustMeAndMyTins · 01/03/2020 22:32

Why do we think they aren’t diagnosing more in London? Because there’s no way we would have considerably less in the UK than France and Germany - and you would expect London to be the main pocket as such a travel/tourist hub. I’m starting to wonder if they’re just doing a better job of testing more people and that’s reflected in the numbers.

Pleased the Chevron guy didn’t have it. A lot of his colleagues were at an event with some of mine just before they self-isolated. Mind you, everyone travels so much at my place that it’s hard to feel safe in the office. And that’s not mentioning my crowded bus-and-two-train commute.

itsnotjustflu · 01/03/2020 22:34

@WorryAboutCovid If it wasn't so flippin hard to take a kid out of school we'd pull ours now. DH says we should just give Corona as an excuse and pull him. I said we should just sent a letter to apply to homeschool and then put him back in when it blows over (he's in a very small school) He has said we are pulling him as soon as there's a case in our area but I don't know. Numbers are still all relatively low and even in Italy where it's 'bad' numbers are still very low

@TheMammothHunters also wish they'd just shut schools! I need to get his world book day outfit sorted but still not done it as it just doesn't feel right!!

We are booked to go to Denmark in mid April. Saw my Mum today who wouldn't stop going on about when can we check in for the flights and all her 100ml products she's sorted. :(

@puppycorn we've prepped for 3 months, it's possible we could stretch to 4-5 with what we have but I may buy more this week. I have no cupboard space left though and we are 'supposed' to be moving in 2 months!!!!! DH has told me no more....I keep kinda sneaking more in. Just bought loads of bread mix and even ginger cake mix. We only drink 1 cup of tea, 1 glass water and 2 soft drinks each a day so we've bought that in and will drink tap water to start off with. why does pasta need 7 ingredients? we've bought some jar sauces with ingredients in. Plus simple things like chorizo, tinned sweetcorn and even tuna and may can make a pasta dish. Bacon also lasts a while. parma ham also. A good sprinkle of cheese helps. I wouldn't want to be vegetarian right now.

MissPoldark · 01/03/2020 22:38

3 months!!! It sounds like you have more than enough, at least about 6 times as much as other people ...,

SkyesBackPack · 01/03/2020 22:47

Looking at the #panicbuying on Twitter is 😯 for the USA. Mind you that’s what my trolly always looks like when we leave Costco. I never understand how people can leave with one cake and a tub of butter. Why not just go to Tesco?
I am wondering how many toilet rolls we use in a week now. I might try to take count this week.

Sunshinesky1981 · 01/03/2020 22:48

We have around 2 weeks worth of food at home. Am doing a top up shop but going down the route of simple/ cheap/ no space taken up so am planning on picking up just a couple more packs of value pasta, value pasta sauce, couple of Tins of tuna and a few packs of the flavoured couscous. Wont be mega exciting meals but could make it stretch a few days

UtahGirl12 · 01/03/2020 22:48

Long time lurker, first time poster. I've added to my Brexit stash so feel ok food wise, plus I've got additional meds in, plus toiletries, cleaning products etc. Haven't been able to get hand sanitiser anywhere but have stocked up on anti bac wipes. I work in a school, but I'm currently on a sabbatical in a university in a Dpd all city with a confirmed case. My biggest worry is trying to get my youngest who is in uni the other side of the country to take this seriously, especially as he had pneumonia twice last year. He thinks he's invincible and I'm over exaggerating, I want contingency plans put in place to get him home ASAP if they close the uni or lock down the city. I bet they have one tin of beans between them in the student house! My second child is also in uni and taking it seriously, and luckily she's closer to home. My eldest is on an armed forces base, so not so worried about him. Just waiting to see the results of the Cobra meeting tomorrow but suspect they won't be anywhere what's needed. Just feel like I'm playing a waiting game now, plus also getting my head around the fact we are going to lose about 5k on a long haul holiday over Easter, as there's no way we are going!

itsnotjustflu · 01/03/2020 22:51

@misspoldark I shopped around a bit to find best prices while I had the luxury of time. If we end up in lockdown I don't want either myself or my DH to have to be the chosen one to go to the local shop

itsnotjustflu · 01/03/2020 22:53

@UtahGirl12 I know how you feel about losing money on an Easter holiday. I really don't want to go....my Mum does and it's for her 70th!

Tinnednut · 01/03/2020 22:54

@Puppycorn my plan is to make meals as simple but add in herbs and spices to liven it up.
If I was to be going out right now to stock up my priorities would be
Rice
Potatoes
pasta
Porridge oats
Long life milk or non dairy milk
Peanut butter
Bread flour, plain flour, tinned yeast, salt, sugar, oil
That would give you the opportunity to make bread and other baked goods.

I don't have the link but there is a big group on FB called £1 a day for people on a really small food budget.

Puppycorn · 01/03/2020 23:00

@Aufgehts Yes I use Brita filter and use filtered tap water for washing/cooking.
@MasterOfCaffeine @itsnotjustflu Ours is mainly a lacto vegetarian diet & dinner is as such isn’t boring as we make lot of curries, rice, pasta, noodles,pizzas- etc but when it comes to stocking up I am very wary as I think my brain would forget something important. For 7 ingredients needed for pasta - pasta, water, a drop of olive oil, salt, sauce, handful of vegetables and some cheese. Is’nt it! I wish the schools closes long before it causes unnecessary worry to all mums. Dd is in reception and I don’t think she being at home for couple of weeks will affect her or the nation’s future in anyways 😅 yes she might miss learning and playing with her friends at school temporarily but that’s a small price to pay if that helps contain the spread.

Tinnednut · 01/03/2020 23:00

Another dried idea is Barley great for bulking up soup and pies. You can make Barley water too.

MoonlightMistletoe · 01/03/2020 23:03

If that link works of the tracker , it has the locations and case numbers.

Can someone tell me about freezing potatoes? Do I just boil, mash and freeze in a bag? Should I add milk and butter before freezing or wait til after defrosting and heating?

MasterOfCaffeine · 01/03/2020 23:06

Ooh yes tinned I use bags of Goodness in soups, it's a mix of barley and lentils etc. You just need to make sure the soup is cooked long enough to soften the Goodness. Makes soup extremely satisfying Grin

Flyingsouthwiththeswallows · 01/03/2020 23:10

I am wondering if we should start a separate Recipe thread to hold everyone’s ideas of how to turn our cupboards of dried foods / tins into appetising meals !!

BeepOpsiePie · 01/03/2020 23:13

Anyone else been wondering about the impossibility of isolating yourself from the rest of your family, as a mother?! I'm talking about if you get ill. Especially if you have a baby or toddler.

My 5 year old is very independent and would understand if I told him that he couldn't get close to me for a while, but my 2 year old is as clingy as a newborn, wants to cuddle me and put his hands all over me often, and also sleeps in our bed. If I got ill and wanted to prevent the rest of the family from getting it, there's no way he would sleep in a separate room with my husband, or let my husband take over the majority of his care. But on the other hand if I'm really knocked-out with a flu-like illness I can't take care of him. So in that scenario we would just have to risk all of us getting it..!?
