Prepping for a pandemic....8

8th thread on prepping for a pandemic and following the risk of a COVID pandemic.

Anxiety

As Preppers we tend to look at a reasonable worst case scenario to plan for. Everyone is welcome on the thread but if you find it makes you anxious be kind to yourself and think about sticking to once daily updates from the BBC or similar Thanks

General COVID Info

The estimated replication rate is R= 2 to 4 based on latest expert estimates. This means each infected person spreads the virus to between 2 and 4 people. Experts estimate that, unchecked, it could infect 60% of the population.

Around 15-20% of cases are thought to be severe - that is resulting in the need for hospitalisation. Around 3-5% requiring ventilation.

The estimated mortality rate is around 1-2% at the moment (compared to 0.01-0.1% for flu). This may change as it is very difficult to estimate mortality.

Children tend to have milder symptoms. Those over 60 with underlying health issues and a history of smoking are more likely to be severe (although not exclusively this type of person).

Spread of COVID

It is estimated that the average incubation period is 3-5 days but can be as long as 24 days.

It can be spread with no symptoms.

It can be spread via droplet (cough/sneeze), aerosol (breathing same air in very close quarters), bodily fluids, fecal/oral route and formites (via surfaces, up to 28 days in the right circumstances but up to 3-5 days in more typical circumstances).

Updates

As this is a novel virus and knowledge is constantly being updated - I will post updates as they become available with links to source.

I am not a medical expert so any opinions or conjecture of my own should be taken with a pinch of salt!

Prepping Scenarios

Most of us are prepping for the following situations:

  • Wanting to stay indoors for 2-4 weeks + in case of a local outbreak / schools being closed
  • Potentially being ill with a flu type illness lasting 2-3 weeks with one or more of the household having the illness
  • Having to take a family member to hospital for COVID or any other reason during an outbreak

Prepping Items

Threads 1&2 have lists of things to think about to prep for the first scenario as do the Brexit prepping threads.

Main differences/additions to something like the Brexit list are:

  • Face masks if you can get them for any trips you have to make in public during an outbreak. These don't offer full protection and cannot be 100% relied upon but are probably better than nothing if you make sure you wear them correctly and dispose of them correctly. N95 masks are best but expensive and harder to wear, surgical face masks are second best. Dust masks are not going to help.
  • Hand sanitiser needs to be 60% or more alcohol content
  • Dettol / bleach / Miltons to disinfect. Not all disinfectants work but these three do
  • Plenty of at home/over counter treatments for flu type symptoms should you need to treat at home
  • Tissues (lots of) should you catch the virus
  • Think about meals that are easy to cook and eat should you be ill or both parents be ill at the same time (soup for example)
  • For a potential hospital trip you may want to prep a 'go bag' should you need to take someone to hospital with the virus (or anything else) during an outbreak. See Thread 1&2 for examples of what people are packing
  • Frequent and thorough hand washing, not touching your face and social distancing (no handshakes, hugs, etc) are some of the most effective ways to stay virus free

Other Thoughts

India have announced that they are stopping exports of some antibiotics, hormone treatments and vitamin supplements as they rely on China for raw materials.

Many factories that supplied fibre for use in sanitary towels and tampons are being diverted to manufacture face masks. Consider stocking up or changing to sustainable items (cloth STs, mooncup, period pants)

If you bulk buy hand gel with a high alcohol content make sure it is stored somewhere safe other than the one you’re using. It is flammable!

Sorry if it’s been asked already but may I ask for how long and how much have you all stocked up? I just realised I was really way off in calculating how much we need for two weeks and how many meals we might need to make (was pleased to have a little stock of ingredients to last for 2-3 weeks but when dh said “one recipe like a simple pasta will need atleast 7 ingredients and we might need atleast 1500 calories per person and 65 litres of water that really made me rethink) I don’t want to stockpile for months ahead and spend a fortune (finances are tight) but I don’t mind having just enough to sail us through.

SkyesBackPack · 01/03/2020 21:38

I’m the other side of Haslemere up the A3 but I’m two miles away. It’s my closest town. So the kids do clubs there. Two of my kids went to school there, but have moved on now.

NEW: Armenia closes schools across the country for 1 week to prevent the spread of coronavirus; the country reported its 1st case earlier today - ARKA

bellinisurge · 01/03/2020 21:41

@ofwarren , I think the whole of Washington State has now shifted to a more rigorous approach
@Puppycorn , just focus on the possible two week lockdown.

FuckThisWind · 01/03/2020 21:42

Italy is definitely the hot spot then.
No idea if we have been exposed to Italian skiing holidaymakers. Being half Italian myself, but too skint to have travelled there recently. There was a thread earlier today saying something like Northern working class towns shouldn't worry. Believe me, we have large multicultural communities here. Including students from all over the world clamouring to attend to our well respected Universities like Newcastle and Durham.

MasterOfCaffeine · 01/03/2020 21:43

puppycorn we have enough for 2-3 weeks and could probably stretch to 5-6 if necessary. I found it helpful to write what we already had, make a meal plan around it and then buy any necessary extras. I can't foresee water shortages (but someone else may correct me) so you can probably do without that?

chicken2015 · 01/03/2020 21:46

There are 3 cases from Hertfordshire and in my town one of the schools went to northern Italy for skiing trip over half term so have been being tested, its on our spotted fb page so slightly concerning.

SkyesBackPack · 01/03/2020 21:46

I hope I have enough for six weeks but I could be tight as 4 kids

RandomlyChosenName · 01/03/2020 21:55

Has anyone kept a UK list of cases and where they are? I have got lost!
We had the Chinese couple in York (I think)
Then was is Brighton man, did he infect 3 more and were they in Brighton?
Then I have forgotten what happened until we got Haslemere and the first no known origin case.
Was it Herefordshire, Gloucestershire and somewhere else yesterday?
I know we have on in NI, one in Wales and one in Scotland (today).
3 cases today from West Sussex connected to Haslemere case.
Also today London, Bury, 2 x Leeds, Bradford, Gloucestershire

Anyone keeping track?

Puppycorn · 01/03/2020 21:55

@MasterOfCaffeine Thank you. sorry if I haven’t mentioned, it’s not because of water shortages. have certain underlying conditions and medications so we drink bottled water (very hard water and increased calcium causes palpitations for me - so narrow choices even in bottled water) and use the tap water less (only for cooking/washing etc)

ofwarren · 01/03/2020 21:56

Coronavirus updates:

  • Germany: 12 new cases, 50 so far today, 129 total
  • Israel: 3 new cases today, 10 total
  • Iceland: 1 new case, 2 new cases so far today, 3 total t.co/eUoE2b20hL

Puppycorn - I bought an extra 6kg of pasta, lots of tomato sauce and lots of cheddar. It wouldn't be great, but that would feed us for a week, isn't an expensive outlay and takes up very little space.

We're slowly eating our way through the contents of the cupboards, fridge and freezers - I'm quite excited about having a good clear out.

There are no food shortages here, but online shopping isn't really a 'thing' in Italy yet so we'll hold out as long as possible as we are quarantining for CV symptoms.

MoonlightMistletoe · 01/03/2020 22:01

Randomly - I am living in London and I cannot find any information on the latest London case.

MasterOfCaffeine · 01/03/2020 22:05

Ah puppycorn that makes sense. I would stock up on the water as a priority then. Like Veneto says, the pasta and sauce option is cheap and although boring, it would get you out of a bind. Chuck in some frozen veg for good measure.

Half of my planned meals involve meat from the freezer and the other half are based on past/rice/noodles with frozen veg. I plan to alternate every 1-2 days so that we wouldn't be left with just boring cupboard stuff when the meat runs out. I also have a large stock of choccy digestives Grin

katienana · 01/03/2020 22:06

Does anyone find it strange that there aren't really any accounts of anyone who has had the virus and spoken to the media about it? I would have thought the UK people who've had it would be offered £££ for an interview. It all seems very mysterious the process around testing, severity of symptoms etc. The less we know the more silly rumours go around

I imagine they don't want to be identified due to the associated stigma, though you would think someone would take the money and dish the dirt. I do think it would give some bit of peace of mind to people to hear first hand that people do recover from it. I did red an account of a man in China who had recovered and he didn't seem to have suffered too much.

SkyesBackPack · 01/03/2020 22:14

I wouldn’t go to the press. To much speculation on the local community boards, people asking if anyone knows who it was, where they live etc.

Aufgehts · 01/03/2020 22:15

@Puppycorn would a Brita filter or similar help with that?

EliK · 01/03/2020 22:19

@katienana that's why I follow the Abels on YouTube. I know people find them annoying but I was interested in their experience since they were found positive.
