Prepping for a pandemic....8

wheresmymojo · 28/02/2020 21:54

8th thread on prepping for a pandemic and following the risk of a COVID pandemic.

Anxiety

As Preppers we tend to look at a reasonable worst case scenario to plan for. Everyone is welcome on the thread but if you find it makes you anxious be kind to yourself and think about sticking to once daily updates from the BBC or similar Thanks

General COVID Info

The estimated replication rate is R= 2 to 4 based on latest expert estimates. This means each infected person spreads the virus to between 2 and 4 people. Experts estimate that, unchecked, it could infect 60% of the population.

Around 15-20% of cases are thought to be severe - that is resulting in the need for hospitalisation. Around 3-5% requiring ventilation.

The estimated mortality rate is around 1-2% at the moment (compared to 0.01-0.1% for flu). This may change as it is very difficult to estimate mortality.

Children tend to have milder symptoms. Those over 60 with underlying health issues and a history of smoking are more likely to be severe (although not exclusively this type of person).

Spread of COVID

It is estimated that the average incubation period is 3-5 days but can be as long as 24 days.

It can be spread with no symptoms.

It can be spread via droplet (cough/sneeze), aerosol (breathing same air in very close quarters), bodily fluids, fecal/oral route and formites (via surfaces, up to 28 days in the right circumstances but up to 3-5 days in more typical circumstances).

Updates

As this is a novel virus and knowledge is constantly being updated - I will post updates as they become available with links to source.

I am not a medical expert so any opinions or conjecture of my own should be taken with a pinch of salt!

Prepping Scenarios

Most of us are prepping for the following situations:

  • Wanting to stay indoors for 2-4 weeks + in case of a local outbreak / schools being closed
  • Potentially being ill with a flu type illness lasting 2-3 weeks with one or more of the household having the illness
  • Having to take a family member to hospital for COVID or any other reason during an outbreak

Prepping Items

Threads 1&2 have lists of things to think about to prep for the first scenario as do the Brexit prepping threads.

Main differences/additions to something like the Brexit list are:

  • Face masks if you can get them for any trips you have to make in public during an outbreak. These don't offer full protection and cannot be 100% relied upon but are probably better than nothing if you make sure you wear them correctly and dispose of them correctly. N95 masks are best but expensive and harder to wear, surgical face masks are second best. Dust masks are not going to help.
  • Hand sanitiser needs to be 60% or more alcohol content
  • Dettol / bleach / Miltons to disinfect. Not all disinfectants work but these three do
  • Plenty of at home/over counter treatments for flu type symptoms should you need to treat at home
  • Tissues (lots of) should you catch the virus
  • Think about meals that are easy to cook and eat should you be ill or both parents be ill at the same time (soup for example)
  • For a potential hospital trip you may want to prep a 'go bag' should you need to take someone to hospital with the virus (or anything else) during an outbreak. See Thread 1&2 for examples of what people are packing
  • Frequent and thorough hand washing, not touching your face and social distancing (no handshakes, hugs, etc) are some of the most effective ways to stay virus free

Other Thoughts

India have announced that they are stopping exports of some antibiotics, hormone treatments and vitamin supplements as they rely on China for raw materials.

Many factories that supplied fibre for use in sanitary towels and tampons are being diverted to manufacture face masks. Consider stocking up or changing to sustainable items (cloth STs, mooncup, period pants)

If you bulk buy hand gel with a high alcohol content make sure it is stored somewhere safe other than the one you’re using. It is flammable!

@pemberlyshades

My feeling is that that percentage is skewed by the fact that each country only becomes aware of the scale of its outbreak when people start dying and more tests start being rolled out within the population. There will have been a lot of extra people who were infected, were a bit ill (or not) and got completely better who are not included in the numbers of 'recovered'. Whereas all the deaths will be included. That skewing will smooth out the longer the outbreak goes on in any given country and the true death rate will be less.

There will also be significant regional variation, both in terms of how comprehensive the statistics are and how good the healthcare is.

And all of this assumes the numbers themselves are accurate. As I say, I just crunched the numbers that were quoted on the thread but I don't know where they came from.

A Tayside resident who recently travelled from Italy has become the first person in Scotland to be diagnosed with coronavirus, the Scottish Government has said. It brings the UK total to 36.

@0ttoline

Thanks for the recipe.

Am bookmarking various ones for IF we reach a time when my now very full pantry and freezer start to empty out.

I feel a certain amount of guilt at being able to afford to prep so well. For those already struggling the pressure and fear of this virus must be so much worse.

Except for donating food or money to food banks how else can we help our more vulnerable members of society if the sh$t hits the fan?

shouldhavecalleditoatabix · 01/03/2020 19:57

@pemberley, adding to what @red just said, there is a mn on here, @VenetoResident who has already said they are only testing those that present to hospital with symptoms because there aren't enough tests. That means they will be missing those with mild symptoms or those who are asymptomatic. That means those figures cannot be directly compared for death rate. The best figures I've seen seem to be from China. Admittedly nobody knows how accurate they are either but it's still fairly safe to say they will not be catching all the mild cases so the actual percentage of deaths will definitely be lower.

HalfaMillion · 01/03/2020 20:01

I’ve just namechanged but been posting since the first thread.

So happily have got everything we hopefully would need if we had to self isolate. Everyone has been mocking me especially as we don’t live in a big city. It’s quite rural and not a high population density.

We live just outside Ilkley which has now had a case confirmed. Will be interesting to see what happens now....

GorkyMcPorky · 01/03/2020 20:01

Except for donating food or money to food banks how else can we help our more vulnerable members of society if the sh$t hits the fan?

I think there needs to be massive popular pressure on government not to sanction people who can't go to UC appointments.

AdoraBell · 01/03/2020 20:06

Thanks for that cake link Ottoline

YoursTunbridgeWells · 01/03/2020 20:08

Did I read somewhere that one of the Hertfordshire cases was Stevenage?

pemberlyshades · 01/03/2020 20:09

That makes sense @shouldhavecalleditoatabix and is quite reassuring too.

pemberlyshades · 01/03/2020 20:10

Thanks @RedLentilYellowLentil hopefully South Korea or Singapore will give a more accurate indication as time goes on.

Cismyfatarse1 · 01/03/2020 20:16

Thanks. I am within a mile or two of the Scottish case so awaiting updates on contact tracing. I don't know anyone who has been in Italy in the last 2 weeks but here's hoping they haven't spread it too far. I am a teacher so very concerned about pupils.

Elsa8 · 01/03/2020 20:17

@HalfaMillion I've also name changed, we're in the same neck of the woods and I'm feeling pretty uneasy that it's so close to home. I'm glad it sounds like that lady is doing okay at least. We're reasonably well stocked but DH will go and do a food shop tomorrow, and I work in the opposite direction in Leeds so will probably grab a few bits from a supermarket there too - I imagine the ones round here will be doing a roaring trade tomorrow. It's all feeling very real suddenlyl! I would really like to know where the Leeds cases were.

EliK · 01/03/2020 20:19

Was fully expecting a Scottish case to pop up but it's nerve-wracking all the same.
Things have definitely changed. Family and friends who originally laughed at me prepping now have their own stash.

FuckThisWind · 01/03/2020 20:20

Hi all. Sorry I properly lost my shit yesterday. Thankfully, I've had a serious reply from my employer today. Unfortunately, it was very Boris-esque and basically said wash your hands as much as possible. I've pointed out that during an 8 hour shift, you only get one break. And in between times, your scanning thousands of items, serving hundreds of customers and having the fuckers cough all over you. Hand gel is sold out, so you're fucked basically unless you have any. Colleagues are coming out in support which is good.
But the silence last night was deafening.

Anyway, scary shit with today's numbers. Tomorrows UK figures are surely set to double. And then the Govt will have to say / do something more than the 'Happy Birthday' washing hands crap. not holding my breath

alreadytaken · 01/03/2020 20:21

There was someone on television earlier today making sensible comments about death rates - and they are far smaller than the rates you are quoting on here. Wish I'd recorded it.

I'l repeat something I posted elsewhere -

the dirtiest most germ ridden thing in your home is likely to be .........your phone. No point in singing a couple of choruses of happy birthday while washing your hands if you then pick the virus back up from your phone. So dont forget to clean that now and then.

If you havent been taking any vitamin D supplements this winter then start taking them now and continue until at least the end of March, longer if you need to stay indoors.

ChardonnaysDistantCousin · 01/03/2020 20:25

I just cleaned all the keys, phones and Oyster cards.

EliK · 01/03/2020 20:26

I've been cleaning my phone with wipes and also making sure I don't use it on public transport. No idea if it will help but worth a try.

ofwarren · 01/03/2020 20:29

Mexico reports 5th case of coronavirus, first in the state of Chiapas t.co/eUoE2b20hL

wherearemychickens · 01/03/2020 20:30

Yes, I've started cleaning the phones in this house too.

FuckThisWind · 01/03/2020 20:31

I've been telling my employer that it's fucking pointless me washing my hands if a customer has just coughed in my face. And that I'd like signs in our stores respectfully asking customers to share WHO guidelines. For all the good that will do!

FuckThisWind · 01/03/2020 20:32

Follow WHO guidelines. Not share.

Angjud · 01/03/2020 20:32

Thanks for the tread.

I have started prepping since the inevitable Brexit and now just restocking on food and toiletries. Have also read about potential pandemic prep and they advised to go on camping mode so from alternate heat source to water supply. Don’t know how relevant this is to those who live in town/city.

Btw: PHE is not going all out on info such as towns and locations of infected patients - it would be great to know if anyone have any details.

WeBuiltCisCityOnSexistRoles · 01/03/2020 20:37

I think it's unlucky to sing Happy Birthday when it's not someone's birthday Blush and Boris look my shirt sleeves are rolled up Johnson can shove his patronising and inadequate response up his arse, frankly. I get the fact that singing the HB song is a good way to time your hand washing but I find these lyrics much more pleasing

Fuck off Boris you knob
Fuck off Boris you knob
Fuck off Boris you knobhead
Fuck off Boris you knob

(You can substitute any other word for knob. As long as it's one syllable, but still, we have so much choice! Twat or Prick maybe. I think cunt maybe be MNers favourite?)

ofwarren · 01/03/2020 20:40

4th case of #Coronavirus in #Denmark
