Prepping for a pandemic...7

7th thread on prepping for a pandemic and following the risk of a COVID pandemic.

Anxiety

As Preppers we tend to look at a reasonable worst case scenario to plan for. Everyone is welcome on the thread but if you find it makes you anxious be kind to yourself and think about sticking to once daily updates from the BBC or similar Thanks

General COVID Info

The estimated replication rate is R= 2 to 4 based on latest expert estimates. This means each infected person spreads the virus to between 2 and 4 people. Experts estimate that, unchecked, it could infect 60% of the population.

Around 15-20% of cases are thought to be severe - that is resulting in the need for hospitalisation. Around 3-5% requiring ventilation.

The estimated mortality rate is around 1-2% at the moment (compared to 0.01-0.1% for flu). This may change as it is very difficult to estimate mortality.

Children tend to have milder symptoms. Those over 60 with underlying health issues and a history of smoking are more likely to be severe (although not exclusively this type of person).

Spread of COVID

It is estimated that the average incubation period is 3-5 days but can be as long as 24 days.

It can be spread with no symptoms.

It can be spread via droplet (cough/sneeze), aerosol (breathing same air in very close quarters), bodily fluids, fecal/oral route and formites (via surfaces, up to 28 days in the right circumstances but up to 3-5 days in more typical circumstances).

Updates

As this is a novel virus and knowledge is constantly being updated - I will post updates as they become available with links to source.

I am not a medical expert so any opinions or conjecture of my own should be taken with a pinch of salt!

Prepping Scenarios

Most of us are prepping for the following situations:

  • Wanting to stay indoors for 2-4 weeks + in case of a local outbreak / schools being closed
  • Potentially being ill with a flu type illness lasting 2-3 weeks with one or more of the household having the illness
  • Having to take a family member to hospital for COVID or any other reason during an outbreak

Prepping Items

Threads 1&2 have lists of things to think about to prep for the first scenario as do the Brexit prepping threads.

Main differences/additions to something like the Brexit list are:

  • Face masks if you can get them for any trips you have to make in public during an outbreak. These don't offer full protection and cannot be 100% relied upon but are probably better than nothing if you make sure you wear them correctly and dispose of them correctly. N95 masks are best but expensive and harder to wear, surgical face masks are second best. Dust masks are not going to help.
  • Hand sanitiser needs to be 60% or more alcohol content
  • Dettol / bleach / Miltons to disinfect. Not all disinfectants work but these three do
  • Plenty of at home/over counter treatments for flu type symptoms should you need to treat at home
  • Tissues (lots of) should you catch the virus
  • Think about meals that are easy to cook and eat should you be ill or both parents be ill at the same time (soup for example)
  • For a potential hospital trip you may want to prep a 'go bag' should you need to take someone to hospital with the virus (or anything else) during an outbreak. See Thread 1&2 for examples of what people are packing
  • Frequent and thorough hand washing, not touching your face and social distancing (no handshakes, hugs, etc) are some of the most effective ways to stay virus free

Other Thoughts

India have announced that they are stopping exports of some antibiotics, hormone treatments and vitamin supplements as they rely on China for raw materials.

Many factories that supplied fibre for use in sanitary towels and tampons are being diverted to manufacture face masks. Consider stocking up or changing to sustainable items (cloth STs, mooncup, period pants)

I'm scared now. I watched newsnight last night which was a mistake anyway, talk of mass burials freaked me out. Then I realised it's going to be pretty much impossible to avoid. I'm already being careful, I wouldn't travel or attend a large public event for instance but I have been going to work and planned to do so until it all kicks off then work from home. The person I share a small office with went to Germany for the weekend to the exact place featured on the news re 2 infected people being on holiday there and now they're bracing for an outbreak. So for all my caution and preparedness I've spent 3 days sitting in a small office with someone just back from what will probably be the German epicentre.

EliK · 27/02/2020 07:20

I can't believe it's still spreading in Hubei Province. It's quite scary really.

avocadoincident · 27/02/2020 07:33

Great advice on here. I'll be topping up our supplies today.
Our low salt beans are reduced in Tesco, a 4 pack for 85p so husband bought a tonne of them.

Still not sure what to do about masks? Any latest thinking?

ofwarren · 27/02/2020 07:36

The masks are only a couple of quid each so I got some from wicks. I don't plan on using them unless we are in a lockdown situation and I need to go out, or I need to go to the hospital.
I got a box of ten from wicks a few days ago.

IceWings · 27/02/2020 07:37

I am probably way behind on this, but what sort of masks and where can I buy them that’s not out of stock?

SharpieInThe · 27/02/2020 07:38

Anyone else having a distraction day?

Think I'm going to switch off for 12 hours, have a clear out, do some exercise and just ignore for day.

I can't afford to prep anymore, done everything I can. Feels like I'm just waiting for the next news update.

TreesSandSea · 27/02/2020 07:44

Sharpie I think that is a really good shout. I’m emotionally wrung out by it - and physically knackered too due to this never ending cold. I can’t do more, I feel like I am constantly online waiting for the hammer to fall.

So maybe I will also take a break from the media today.

AlohaMolly · 27/02/2020 07:46

I did feel prepared but that’s failing off and I’m concerned we won’t have enough if there’s a sudden run on the shops. I’m going to spend my lunch break writing out a decent meal plan with breakfast lunches and dinners with the food I’ve got and see how long we’d have.

SharpieInThe · 27/02/2020 07:48

Sorry you're feeling it too @TreesSandSea, I'm going offline at 8am. Going to turn my wifi off and just start doing stuff. Hopefully it'll give my mind a break and I'll sleep better tonight for it.

Have a good day everyone 👋

JiltedJohnsJulie · 27/02/2020 07:51

I've spotted a camping toilet on eBay for £6, think I may order that one depending on delivery time.

HasaDigaEebowai · 27/02/2020 07:55

DS2 is coughing a lot this morning. Probably completely unrelated to his friend in isolation but its making me nervous. Packed them off to school though as per instructions Hmm

Funkycats · 27/02/2020 07:59

Hello everyone. Thanks for the thread Mojo
We're quite well stocked here, and we continue to go about our daily lives. I've always been one for good hygiene (not obsessively so) and we are continuing that.
destiny I have Tin Can Cook and it is to be recommended.
For posters not wanting to get food in for fear of it being wasted: tinned and dried goods have a very long shelf life. At least a couple of years. If there is no emergency you can incorporate it into your usual menus over a period of time. Long life milk can be good for 9 months or so. Always worth having some in as back up.
I also have a tub of coffee mate, and some dried milk. Emergencies only for that, and it will go to foodbank in good time, along with a few other bits, if we don't need them.
In a real SHTF scenario we're all screwed anyway, and personally I'd like to be snug at home knowing we'll cope for a bit, if we have a bumpy few weeks.
I don't think that's particularly bonkers.

mogloveseggs · 27/02/2020 08:00

Prepped I need your help
Dd is coughing and has been to one of the places. Not one of the lockdowns but close enough. I think it's just a cough but waiting for a call back from 111 to find out what to do next.
What urgent things to I need to do/get today (it would be dm getting them) if we have to self isolate for 2 weeks

mogloveseggs · 27/02/2020 08:02

Preppers sorry Blush

Funkycats · 27/02/2020 08:06

Hope he's OK Hasa. I think most of us will be less stressed if we do simply follow the guidelines and hope for the best.
I think anxiety feeds on a desire to try to control things. This is out of our control beyond basic hygiene.

HuntedUp · 27/02/2020 08:08

Dh and I had a long conversation about masks yesterday and decided that for our family there wouldn’t be a situation where we needed one. Might live (or not live...) to regret it.

We have young dc so like a pp I don’t think we would separate ourselves from them within the house. We don’t have elderly relatives we care for. And we can work at home if need to. We have stocks of food.

As they are now so difficult to buy and expensive we are not going to stress about it.

But then I do start worrying that I might be missing something - for example a trip to hospital.

preponderings · 27/02/2020 08:09

I would go for what you usually eat for a week and longer life versions for second week. For us that would be:
Veg - fresh plus frozen/tinned
Eggs/bacon
Pasta/Pelati/stock/herbs/Parmesan
Fish fingers
Meat - double cook, freeze a meal
Honey/lemon/warm non milk based drinks.
Milk.

MoonlightMistletoe · 27/02/2020 08:09

Why arnt any of the school children having to self isolate who have been to northern Italy for ski trips? I know someone who has come back and a few of their class mates have been taken for testing as they have flu symptoms, the others are back at school. This just doesn't seem sensible at all!

Has anyone seen this YouTube video yet? I thought it was quite interesting. Puts a lot of things like Meds, SARS, Ebola and coronavirus on a graph so you can see how they relate.
