Prepping for a pandemic...7

7th thread on prepping for a pandemic and following the risk of a COVID pandemic.

Anxiety

As Preppers we tend to look at a reasonable worst case scenario to plan for. Everyone is welcome on the thread but if you find it makes you anxious be kind to yourself and think about sticking to once daily updates from the BBC or similar Thanks

General COVID Info

The estimated replication rate is R= 2 to 4 based on latest expert estimates. This means each infected person spreads the virus to between 2 and 4 people. Experts estimate that, unchecked, it could infect 60% of the population.

Around 15-20% of cases are thought to be severe - that is resulting in the need for hospitalisation. Around 3-5% requiring ventilation.

The estimated mortality rate is around 1-2% at the moment (compared to 0.01-0.1% for flu). This may change as it is very difficult to estimate mortality.

Children tend to have milder symptoms. Those over 60 with underlying health issues and a history of smoking are more likely to be severe (although not exclusively this type of person).

Spread of COVID

It is estimated that the average incubation period is 3-5 days but can be as long as 24 days.

It can be spread with no symptoms.

It can be spread via droplet (cough/sneeze), aerosol (breathing same air in very close quarters), bodily fluids, fecal/oral route and formites (via surfaces, up to 28 days in the right circumstances but up to 3-5 days in more typical circumstances).

Updates

As this is a novel virus and knowledge is constantly being updated - I will post updates as they become available with links to source.

I am not a medical expert so any opinions or conjecture of my own should be taken with a pinch of salt!

Prepping Scenarios

Most of us are prepping for the following situations:

  • Wanting to stay indoors for 2-4 weeks + in case of a local outbreak / schools being closed
  • Potentially being ill with a flu type illness lasting 2-3 weeks with one or more of the household having the illness
  • Having to take a family member to hospital for COVID or any other reason during an outbreak

Prepping Items

Threads 1&2 have lists of things to think about to prep for the first scenario as do the Brexit prepping threads.

Main differences/additions to something like the Brexit list are:

  • Face masks if you can get them for any trips you have to make in public during an outbreak. These don't offer full protection and cannot be 100% relied upon but are probably better than nothing if you make sure you wear them correctly and dispose of them correctly. N95 masks are best but expensive and harder to wear, surgical face masks are second best. Dust masks are not going to help.
  • Hand sanitiser needs to be 60% or more alcohol content
  • Dettol / bleach / Miltons to disinfect. Not all disinfectants work but these three do
  • Plenty of at home/over counter treatments for flu type symptoms should you need to treat at home
  • Tissues (lots of) should you catch the virus
  • Think about meals that are easy to cook and eat should you be ill or both parents be ill at the same time (soup for example)
  • For a potential hospital trip you may want to prep a 'go bag' should you need to take someone to hospital with the virus (or anything else) during an outbreak. See Thread 1&2 for examples of what people are packing
  • Frequent and thorough hand washing, not touching your face and social distancing (no handshakes, hugs, etc) are some of the most effective ways to stay virus free

Other Thoughts

India have announced that they are stopping exports of some antibiotics, hormone treatments and vitamin supplements as they rely on China for raw materials.

Many factories that supplied fibre for use in sanitary towels and tampons are being diverted to manufacture face masks. Consider stocking up or changing to sustainable items (cloth STs, mooncup, period pants)

I can't see police shutting down villages here, guards standing in the road, even what we have seen from Italy.
As with everything else the UK attitude seems very laissez faire.

Where I work we are done for. About 2000 on site, after half term we have several people saying they feel ill, but 111 won't test them, other people sent home, flights coming and going from everywhere...

I wouldn't be surprised if I don't already have it. Shedding it to my family. I'm the one whose the weakest link in our chain, then one dc at primary.

tryingtoprep · 28/02/2020 14:46

Does anyone know if Dettol spray or wipes work on wet surfaces? We're in a flat with shared main entrance door and bins. It doesn't help that one of the neighbours has been sneezing! I know sneezing isn't a symptom and it's almost certainly a cold but it's made me realise how close together we all are.

I've bought some aloe vera gel to add to surgical spirit for a DIY handgel. Surgical spirit or rubbing alcohol on their own are very harsh for the hands. A lot of DIY receipts online suggest vegetable glycerin as well or instead of aloe vera gel. It's useful when everywhere's selling out of handgel.

What time does Italy update it's figures?

wheresmymojo · 28/02/2020 15:01

At 5pm - not sure if that's GMT or local time

Duckyneedsaclean · 28/02/2020 15:19

Where does the uk daily update at 2pm come from? Twitter? I've been just reading it on here but curious!

lemonjumper · 28/02/2020 15:20

It's on Twitter/Facebook and the official page is here: www.gov.uk/guidance/coronavirus-covid-19-information-for-the-public

WHO raises risk assessment for coronavirus to "very high" at global level

Duckyneedsaclean · 28/02/2020 15:30

Thanks @lemonjumper

Have had a few "scoffers" suddenly telling me they're thinking of stocking up today. The message might be starting to get through

EliK · 28/02/2020 15:34

@tryingtoprep I'm wondering the same. We have shared bins outside.

CocoaLipbalm · 28/02/2020 15:34

Just back from a click and collect order at a Tesco in Edinburgh, having taken note of the advice here. Teenage DD and I can now remain at home as much as possible, because both of us have significant underlying health conditions.

The only item not available in our large order was hand gel - they’re not currently selling it to the public apparently, as they’ve had a large NHS order and that’s been prioritised.

Fortunately, I’m an avid user of hand gel anyway, so we’ve pulled our various supplies out and have plenty for the time being.

Repeat prescriptions being collected later. Can do no more.

RedLentilYellowLentil · 28/02/2020 15:38

Hey, preppers, what's the wisdom with tins that have gone rusty on the outside? I'm doing some rotating of things in the cupboard and have come across a tin of tomatoes that's a bit rusty on the bottom. It's well in date and was part of a four-pack, with the other 3 being fine. The cupboard is against an outside wall that has a bit of a condensation problem, so it's probably just external. Should I chuck it? Eat it sooner rather than later? Not think twice about it?

Tinnednut · 28/02/2020 15:41

@AvocadoOwl does the life insurance policy cover you in case of death in epidemic/pandemic? I need some too.

bellinisurge · 28/02/2020 15:43

I actually had this when I found a few tins in a bag in the garage.
I had the same qualms so I opened them with a view to binning them. The contents were fine.
But I'd probably have the same qualms if it happened again.

MrsPlesWearsAFez · 28/02/2020 15:46

For those of you dealing wit h naysayer family members, there's a brief article on the Guardian today confirming that Yes it is worse than the flu

Tinnednut · 28/02/2020 15:49

@CocoaLipbalm I'm surprised at that I know something of the Scottish NHS supplies, I was led to believe they only ever use their 3rd party medical suppliers. These suppliers hold onto the stock for them before being moved into the hospital. Bringing in from elsewhere would contaminate the chain, recently told that's a very important to them especially for Covid-19 so much so factory, warehouse and haulage of supplies could intentionally go into lockdown.

Tinnednut · 28/02/2020 15:51

When I say 3rd party I mean proper medical supply company.

AvocadoOwl · 28/02/2020 15:54

Yes @Tinnednut. I did a bit of research beforehand and I think most life insurance covers pandemics- turns out the companies themselves have pandemic insurance to protect them in the event that vast numbers need paying out at the same time! Obviously worth double checking before you buy though.

Snugglepumpkin · 28/02/2020 15:57

If you normally shop have groceries delivered it might be worth booking your slots ahead for the next couple of weeks ( if you haven't already done so) sooner rather than later.

If people who don't normally shop that way panic & decide to try to get shopping delivered instead of going into the store, it could end up like it does at Christmas otherwise.

RedLentilYellowLentil · 28/02/2020 15:58

So you did eat them @bellinisurge? And no one was ill? I've got a dented one too. Sad Tuna this time. Bad dent but again, well in date. Makes me cross how much waste there must be because of things that probably get dented in the warehouse.

bellinisurge · 28/02/2020 15:59

@RedLentilYellowLentil , I didn't.
I also check for dents and eat the contents more quickly.

RedLentilYellowLentil · 28/02/2020 16:05

OK, ta. I will follow your (knowledgeable) lead. Thanks. Smile

bellinisurge · 28/02/2020 16:10

Most welcome.

Dennisreynoldsduster · 28/02/2020 16:11

I’ve just realised the conservatory is leaking and that’s where I’ve got my tins 🙈 do you think they’ll be ok?

My Sainsbury’s order cane today, so much missing. I’m doing one for my mum and slots are pretty full already so I think people are wishing up.

Popped out for a walk as DS wouldn’t settle and could not believe the amount of people merrily coughing away without covering their mouths with tissue etc it was grim.

We’ve got a hospital appointment at the end if March for baby DS in London. Although it’s non urgent it is kind of necessary but I’m debating whether to see if I can postpone it. We would have to take public transport and I’m not keen on taking him on the tube at the moment. Am I overreacting?

WitchDoc · 28/02/2020 16:18

I’ve just realised the conservatory is leaking and that’s where I’ve got my tins 🙈 do you think they’ll be ok?

Are you able to store them in some plastic boxes/tubs?
