Prepping for a pandemic...7

7th thread on prepping for a pandemic and following the risk of a COVID pandemic.

Anxiety

As Preppers we tend to look at a reasonable worst case scenario to plan for. Everyone is welcome on the thread but if you find it makes you anxious be kind to yourself and think about sticking to once daily updates from the BBC or similar Thanks

General COVID Info

The estimated replication rate is R= 2 to 4 based on latest expert estimates. This means each infected person spreads the virus to between 2 and 4 people. Experts estimate that, unchecked, it could infect 60% of the population.

Around 15-20% of cases are thought to be severe - that is resulting in the need for hospitalisation. Around 3-5% requiring ventilation.

The estimated mortality rate is around 1-2% at the moment (compared to 0.01-0.1% for flu). This may change as it is very difficult to estimate mortality.

Children tend to have milder symptoms. Those over 60 with underlying health issues and a history of smoking are more likely to be severe (although not exclusively this type of person).

Spread of COVID

It is estimated that the average incubation period is 3-5 days but can be as long as 24 days.

It can be spread with no symptoms.

It can be spread via droplet (cough/sneeze), aerosol (breathing same air in very close quarters), bodily fluids, fecal/oral route and formites (via surfaces, up to 28 days in the right circumstances but up to 3-5 days in more typical circumstances).

Updates

As this is a novel virus and knowledge is constantly being updated - I will post updates as they become available with links to source.

I am not a medical expert so any opinions or conjecture of my own should be taken with a pinch of salt!

Prepping Scenarios

Most of us are prepping for the following situations:

  • Wanting to stay indoors for 2-4 weeks + in case of a local outbreak / schools being closed
  • Potentially being ill with a flu type illness lasting 2-3 weeks with one or more of the household having the illness
  • Having to take a family member to hospital for COVID or any other reason during an outbreak

Prepping Items

Threads 1&2 have lists of things to think about to prep for the first scenario as do the Brexit prepping threads.

Main differences/additions to something like the Brexit list are:

  • Face masks if you can get them for any trips you have to make in public during an outbreak. These don't offer full protection and cannot be 100% relied upon but are probably better than nothing if you make sure you wear them correctly and dispose of them correctly. N95 masks are best but expensive and harder to wear, surgical face masks are second best. Dust masks are not going to help.
  • Hand sanitiser needs to be 60% or more alcohol content
  • Dettol / bleach / Miltons to disinfect. Not all disinfectants work but these three do
  • Plenty of at home/over counter treatments for flu type symptoms should you need to treat at home
  • Tissues (lots of) should you catch the virus
  • Think about meals that are easy to cook and eat should you be ill or both parents be ill at the same time (soup for example)
  • For a potential hospital trip you may want to prep a 'go bag' should you need to take someone to hospital with the virus (or anything else) during an outbreak. See Thread 1&2 for examples of what people are packing
  • Frequent and thorough hand washing, not touching your face and social distancing (no handshakes, hugs, etc) are some of the most effective ways to stay virus free

Other Thoughts

India have announced that they are stopping exports of some antibiotics, hormone treatments and vitamin supplements as they rely on China for raw materials.

Many factories that supplied fibre for use in sanitary towels and tampons are being diverted to manufacture face masks. Consider stocking up or changing to sustainable items (cloth STs, mooncup, period pants)

@ofwarren I should have said I'm in Scotland which is still at 0 so I know there's nothing local yet. Don't think it'll stay at 0 much longer though.

ofwarren · 28/02/2020 11:21

That's true. Definitely none in Scotland yet 😁

DominicCummingsForehead · 28/02/2020 11:23

@FourTeaFallOut my worry is that by the time we know there is a community outbreak near us....it will be far too late to whip kids out of school because they will have already been exposed to it for 2-4 weeks.

ofwarren · 28/02/2020 11:28

2 new cases of #Coronavirus in #Croatia

SirVixofVixHall · 28/02/2020 11:28

Apols if it has been stated somewhere, but we have bought some P3 masks just in case, my brother is saying we need N95 though ? The ones we bought are respirator type, not single use ones, and they say for viruses on the website, (normally for asbestos etc) . Have I got the wrong type ? They were v expensive so I want to make sure.

bellinisurge · 28/02/2020 11:30

Out and about with dh who's come round to making some preparations. Aldi, B&M, Tesco - no hand gel. Luckily, other stuff we were after was available.

Fairylights2021 · 28/02/2020 11:31

As far as I understand p3 is the uk version of N95 so is equivalent.

FourTeaFallOut · 28/02/2020 11:31

No, ffp3s are just what you need. N95s are just the American standard lingo.

Fairylights2021 · 28/02/2020 11:31

Is anyone else struggling to get hold of dried yeast there is none in our Lidl, Coop or Sainsbury’s

FourTeaFallOut · 28/02/2020 11:36

Yes, I could shut down the house and exclude visitors, not post but I think I can make that work with good hygiene but it would be at some considerable expense.

I don't think that would be necessary though, DH has a working environment that doesn't involve a lot of other people whereas two of my children go to school with 600 other vectors children and another goes to a different school with another 800 kids. We don't need to use public transport. I really do think our risk to exposure is magnified exponentially by the kids being in school.

SirVixofVixHall · 28/02/2020 11:41

Thanks FourTea
I have the scary rubber respirator type, cost hundreds for one for each of us , but we have a friend who is immuno compromised, and elderly relatives, plus I have a weak chest and auto immune issues and I am in my fifties, but with dc of 12 and 15, so in full time school. Seemed sensible to get masks in just in case there comes a point when they are really needed. Got goggles as well as the masks don’t cover the eyes.

SirVixofVixHall · 28/02/2020 11:42

I mean hundreds for all of them btw, not for each one.

MissusMaker · 28/02/2020 11:46

Just saw on Twitter some footage of the Queen greeting ambassadors etc as she always does and I was thinking how vulnerable she is, meeting people from a variety of different countries plus she is in her 90's. Imagine if the Queen caught it - that might make people sit up and take notice! (Please note I am not wishing this on her)

YoursTunbridgeWells · 28/02/2020 11:50

I went to the GP about my anxiety and mentioned that I am extremely anxious about CV and how this was affecting my life. In brief, she said it was a rational concern, they are v. afraid as doctors, that the ITU consultant she spoke to earlier this week was on the verge of operating triage anyway, agreed that me staying off meds that impact immunity was a good idea and there was nothing we could do about it anway. Broadly the whole thing is out anyone's control now.

I have to say it was not the most nor the least helpful message. But I have now become afraid of non-cv illness issues such as what happens if you break a leg, get appendicitis have an asthma attack, are having ongoing treatment, need a dentist. Will any services operate to help those people? Will people with respiratory issues be deemed CV even if asthma... I don't know but it's a concern.
Will there come a point where all treatment bar anything lifesaving will have to be stopped? I don't know.

Banana0pancakes · 28/02/2020 11:51

That's a fair point, would definitely be a rubbish 12 months for her if she ends up with this.

WitchDoc · 28/02/2020 11:53

Imagine if the Queen caught it - that might make people sit up and take notice!

Well the Pope is sick & cancelling his audiences!

If we're self-isolating, can we still walk the dogs to the park (avoiding other people) ?

I have 1 dog who will start bouncing off walls if he can't go out; also they say that fresh air is good not only for physical health but also mental health.

The park near us is huge and we can easily go round without seeing anyone else.

KundaliniRising · 28/02/2020 12:03

I am Hmm at the lack of communication via Boris Johnson about cv19. Although i have nasty sneaky thoughts of he probably is rubbing his hands with glee at the though of knocking off the elderly and disabled. That would answer a few issues for his governance Shock.

I am also wondering about the lack of reports from Africa, although there are a couple of cases now in North Africa countries. But what about the rest? They as a group of people are at huge risk, conditions of living for many is well below the povety line.

Please preppers pop the odd item into the food bank crates in the supermarkets, there are so many people that are in need in the uk. Child poverty in the UK is a growing problem and affects more than 4 million children. Four million. Almost a third of children in the UK live in poverty – that’s around nine in the average classroom

HasaDigaEebowai · 28/02/2020 12:03

No. You must stay inside

Fairylights2021 · 28/02/2020 12:08

Just noticed on world o meters www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/ that the death rate is declining slightly and the recovery rate is therefore increasing which is some good news. Though the figures on there are still alarmingly high. I only hope there are many missed milder cases though I know the guy who spoke at WHO conference didn’t think there were a huge number of these.

ofwarren · 28/02/2020 12:09

@KundaliniRising a case in Nigeria this morning

EliK · 28/02/2020 12:13

The economic effects of this are starting to look quite serious. This will certainly be an interesting part of history to look back on.

echobench · 28/02/2020 12:15

Can we keep party politics off the thread please.

Agreed re the food banks.

KundaliniRising · 28/02/2020 12:18

Thank you ofwarren, so they have started to test in Africa then?

Ugh i hate the thought of impoverished children being hit by this Sad

KundaliniRising · 28/02/2020 12:24

Coronavirus: Boris Johnson to hold Cobra meeting as UK cases rise to 19 – latest updates, at last something from him in the public eye, about time too.
