Prepping for a pandemic...7

7th thread on prepping for a pandemic and following the risk of a COVID pandemic.

Anxiety

As Preppers we tend to look at a reasonable worst case scenario to plan for. Everyone is welcome on the thread but if you find it makes you anxious be kind to yourself and think about sticking to once daily updates from the BBC or similar Thanks

General COVID Info

The estimated replication rate is R= 2 to 4 based on latest expert estimates. This means each infected person spreads the virus to between 2 and 4 people. Experts estimate that, unchecked, it could infect 60% of the population.

Around 15-20% of cases are thought to be severe - that is resulting in the need for hospitalisation. Around 3-5% requiring ventilation.

The estimated mortality rate is around 1-2% at the moment (compared to 0.01-0.1% for flu). This may change as it is very difficult to estimate mortality.

Children tend to have milder symptoms. Those over 60 with underlying health issues and a history of smoking are more likely to be severe (although not exclusively this type of person).

Spread of COVID

It is estimated that the average incubation period is 3-5 days but can be as long as 24 days.

It can be spread with no symptoms.

It can be spread via droplet (cough/sneeze), aerosol (breathing same air in very close quarters), bodily fluids, fecal/oral route and formites (via surfaces, up to 28 days in the right circumstances but up to 3-5 days in more typical circumstances).

Updates

As this is a novel virus and knowledge is constantly being updated - I will post updates as they become available with links to source.

I am not a medical expert so any opinions or conjecture of my own should be taken with a pinch of salt!

Prepping Scenarios

Most of us are prepping for the following situations:

  • Wanting to stay indoors for 2-4 weeks + in case of a local outbreak / schools being closed
  • Potentially being ill with a flu type illness lasting 2-3 weeks with one or more of the household having the illness
  • Having to take a family member to hospital for COVID or any other reason during an outbreak

Prepping Items

Threads 1&2 have lists of things to think about to prep for the first scenario as do the Brexit prepping threads.

Main differences/additions to something like the Brexit list are:

  • Face masks if you can get them for any trips you have to make in public during an outbreak. These don't offer full protection and cannot be 100% relied upon but are probably better than nothing if you make sure you wear them correctly and dispose of them correctly. N95 masks are best but expensive and harder to wear, surgical face masks are second best. Dust masks are not going to help.
  • Hand sanitiser needs to be 60% or more alcohol content
  • Dettol / bleach / Miltons to disinfect. Not all disinfectants work but these three do
  • Plenty of at home/over counter treatments for flu type symptoms should you need to treat at home
  • Tissues (lots of) should you catch the virus
  • Think about meals that are easy to cook and eat should you be ill or both parents be ill at the same time (soup for example)
  • For a potential hospital trip you may want to prep a 'go bag' should you need to take someone to hospital with the virus (or anything else) during an outbreak. See Thread 1&2 for examples of what people are packing
  • Frequent and thorough hand washing, not touching your face and social distancing (no handshakes, hugs, etc) are some of the most effective ways to stay virus free

Other Thoughts

India have announced that they are stopping exports of some antibiotics, hormone treatments and vitamin supplements as they rely on China for raw materials.

Many factories that supplied fibre for use in sanitary towels and tampons are being diverted to manufacture face masks. Consider stocking up or changing to sustainable items (cloth STs, mooncup, period pants)

Just been to Aldi. Lots of hand gel, 73.5%. They let me buy 10 no problem.

LightofMine · 28/02/2020 10:23

There's a bit of a difference between countries attitudes to testing. The UK may stop testing at 100 cases but China is offering each person £1100 if they get tested are test positive Confused.

HasaDigaEebowai · 28/02/2020 10:28

I don't think they meant they would stop testing completely. I thought they meant their overall strategy switches to the next phase.

ofwarren · 28/02/2020 10:29

Is the next phase where they stop trying to find contacts?

WitchDoc · 28/02/2020 10:30

That's terrifying @WitchDoc! Me and my ill son are going to be stuck at home for a long time I think.

I'm sorry your son's not well @ofwarren must be such a worry for you.
I wish I could bolt the door shut today once the kids have finished school & not let anyone in or out until this over but I have a pigheaded DH who thinks this all just hype & I'm done battling him, hence signing up here to discuss with other like minded folks.
I've kinda resigned myself to the fact that we're all going to get it & with no underlying health issues, will just have to ride it out the best we can. What does worry me is what is not known about this virus and it's lasting affects.
I feel like I'm living through some sort of apocalypse movie!

WitchDoc · 28/02/2020 10:37

Also, I might be getting things confused but I think we'll possibly see an increase in confirmed cases over the next few days as didn't they do mass testing a couple of days ago & the results take 48hrs?

KundaliniRising · 28/02/2020 10:38

With 8 recovered.

ofwarren · 28/02/2020 10:42

I think you are right @witchdoc and also, those who have been to Italy over the half term might start showing symptoms now.

wheresmymojo · 28/02/2020 10:45

Reliance on self quarantine here is not going to work.

Look at the comments under the Daily Mail thread yesterday - at least 30% or more of the general public think this is all just hype and that anyone taking it seriously is a 'snowflake'

There's no way these people are going to take any notice whatsoever.

Which means it will spread like wildfire and we'll end up with an outcome worse than China IMO.

The whole approach from the Govt so far has been severely lacking. They should be tackling this stage very aggressively to limit the risk of moving into community transmission but they aren't so I think we'll start seeing cases of community clusters soon.

I'm done too. Doors are shut for the foreseeable, I initially thought for a day or 2 too see if this was containable like the original outbreak but this just feels different and all the new cases are independent of each other. Dh is going to stay with his df who lives alone and would be fucked if he caught this so may be a blessing in that sense.

Hopefully it'll blow over with minimal impact and DH can rip me 'til the end of time about the day I kicked him out, quarantined the babies and bought a months shop. Sounds crazy just writing that but here we are!

60 CASES OF #CORONAVIRUS IN #GERMANY

FourTeaFallOut · 28/02/2020 10:49

I'm trying to think about what circumstances I'd feel it was necessary to take the kids out of school?

My personal risk assessment won't be the government's risk assessment. We don't have to keep an eye to the wider economy or nationwide logistics. We've got capacity in our work (both self employed and I work from home) to absorb all the childcare.

I just think it would be very easy just to conform and carry on until it was too late to hoik them out which is a huge worry as we have at-risk family members.

I think if there is a community outbreak local to us, that's going to be my point where we'll rearrange things regardless of everyone else.

#Iran reports 8 new deaths and 143 cases of #coronavirus in the last 24 hours

LightofMine · 28/02/2020 10:52

I suppose once it reaches 100 cases here, it will pretty much be everywhere so no point testing as a precaution.

The tests are not cheap and are using a lot of resources. So I get the advise to isolate and ride it out at home. The money can then be diverted to those presenting with serious symptoms who need treatment.

It doesn't help reassure those who are immunocompromised or with existing conditions though and wont help identify when cases reach a peak or start slowing down.

HasaDigaEebowai · 28/02/2020 10:56

I said this on an earlier thread but you sit and watch movies (or at least I do) and think "thats ridiculous why didn't they immediately grab their kids and lockdown" but the reality is that you can't. Life has to go on and you have to have some level of trust that the government will try to do the right thing.

The problem is that the government has conflicting priorities. One would hope public health trumps all but they also don't want businesses failing, people not being able to afford their mortgages etc so its a really difficult balance for them

Dennisreynoldsduster · 28/02/2020 10:59

I don’t see any point in barricading ourselves in right now tbh. Unless everyone in the house is staying put, you’re not having any visitors and no deliveries or post... yes it May help prolong the inevitable but I doubt it will make much of a difference to anything aside from your mental health

Just my thoughts though, if we get a local outbreak I may change my tune

Geneva International Motor Show canceled due to #Coronavirus outbreak

EliK · 28/02/2020 11:12

I'm still going out and about as normal for now but we've had no cases near us yet. In my mind I think I'm ready to stop sending DS to school when we get cases nearby but in reality I think I'd want to keep that sense of normality for him?

ofwarren · 28/02/2020 11:15

The government aren't telling us where the cases are. The ones we DO know about are because the press manage to find out.
There are 3 cases over the past 2 days where we have no idea what part of the country they live in.

echobench · 28/02/2020 11:16

DH view is that the more you reduce contact, the more you minimise risk.

He’s not at all happy about DC having to go to school, and especially by public transport. But while schools are open we’ve little choice. Plus, crucial exams coming up.

DC are briefed to avoid touching handles etc where possible. Swing doors can be pushed open with a foot. They look for quietest spot on trains etc. Try to avoid rush hour.

The NHS is not geared up for this. The staff literally don’t have the necessary training and protocols are not in place. The government is not taking it seriously enough. Obviously worried about economic consequences.
