Prepping for a pandemic...7

7th thread on prepping for a pandemic and following the risk of a COVID pandemic.

Anxiety

As Preppers we tend to look at a reasonable worst case scenario to plan for. Everyone is welcome on the thread but if you find it makes you anxious be kind to yourself and think about sticking to once daily updates from the BBC or similar Thanks

General COVID Info

The estimated replication rate is R= 2 to 4 based on latest expert estimates. This means each infected person spreads the virus to between 2 and 4 people. Experts estimate that, unchecked, it could infect 60% of the population.

Around 15-20% of cases are thought to be severe - that is resulting in the need for hospitalisation. Around 3-5% requiring ventilation.

The estimated mortality rate is around 1-2% at the moment (compared to 0.01-0.1% for flu). This may change as it is very difficult to estimate mortality.

Children tend to have milder symptoms. Those over 60 with underlying health issues and a history of smoking are more likely to be severe (although not exclusively this type of person).

Spread of COVID

It is estimated that the average incubation period is 3-5 days but can be as long as 24 days.

It can be spread with no symptoms.

It can be spread via droplet (cough/sneeze), aerosol (breathing same air in very close quarters), bodily fluids, fecal/oral route and formites (via surfaces, up to 28 days in the right circumstances but up to 3-5 days in more typical circumstances).

Updates

As this is a novel virus and knowledge is constantly being updated - I will post updates as they become available with links to source.

I am not a medical expert so any opinions or conjecture of my own should be taken with a pinch of salt!

Prepping Scenarios

Most of us are prepping for the following situations:

  • Wanting to stay indoors for 2-4 weeks + in case of a local outbreak / schools being closed
  • Potentially being ill with a flu type illness lasting 2-3 weeks with one or more of the household having the illness
  • Having to take a family member to hospital for COVID or any other reason during an outbreak

Prepping Items

Threads 1&2 have lists of things to think about to prep for the first scenario as do the Brexit prepping threads.

Main differences/additions to something like the Brexit list are:

  • Face masks if you can get them for any trips you have to make in public during an outbreak. These don't offer full protection and cannot be 100% relied upon but are probably better than nothing if you make sure you wear them correctly and dispose of them correctly. N95 masks are best but expensive and harder to wear, surgical face masks are second best. Dust masks are not going to help.
  • Hand sanitiser needs to be 60% or more alcohol content
  • Dettol / bleach / Miltons to disinfect. Not all disinfectants work but these three do
  • Plenty of at home/over counter treatments for flu type symptoms should you need to treat at home
  • Tissues (lots of) should you catch the virus
  • Think about meals that are easy to cook and eat should you be ill or both parents be ill at the same time (soup for example)
  • For a potential hospital trip you may want to prep a 'go bag' should you need to take someone to hospital with the virus (or anything else) during an outbreak. See Thread 1&2 for examples of what people are packing
  • Frequent and thorough hand washing, not touching your face and social distancing (no handshakes, hugs, etc) are some of the most effective ways to stay virus free

Other Thoughts

India have announced that they are stopping exports of some antibiotics, hormone treatments and vitamin supplements as they rely on China for raw materials.

Many factories that supplied fibre for use in sanitary towels and tampons are being diverted to manufacture face masks. Consider stocking up or changing to sustainable items (cloth STs, mooncup, period pants)

It really doesn't sound the UK will be shut down does it? A dr on the radion saying if her kids school shuts she cant work and treat people so schools should not shut. But if her kids got covid19 then they have to be off anyway? Or are expected to do the British education thing and send the kids into school ill?

It feels like there has been zero planning for this, do whatever when ever with the flow.

LittleSwede · 27/02/2020 20:38

DH just returned with a mini top up prepping shop, turns out Aldi has German style rye bread (pumpernickel) with a best before date of September. We also now have several packs of flour to go with the sourdough starter for home baking.

BridgeToTerabithia · 27/02/2020 20:53

I am struggling to sift through the information on germany and france. Can someone tell me where the cases are, please?

ofwarren · 27/02/2020 20:54

San Marino, one of the world's smallest countries and surrounded by Italy, reports first case of coronavirus t.co/eUoE2b20hL

Nomorewineever · 27/02/2020 20:57

Just popping in to add a couple of hopefully useful things:

The pure-klenz hand gel posted up thread is anti-bac and does kill 99.9% the same as the others do. I don’t know why the labelling isn’t clearer. In my own home bargains and b&m they had plenty of these today, cheap as chips. In my local Tesco the re-stock labels were dated tomorrow so hopefully stocks are imminent.

B&M also had plenty of stock of child paracetamol liquid and regular adult paracetamol and ibuprofen.

Can I ask how you preppers feel about one member of your families who might not buy in? I’m ‘risky’ (I’ve had pneumonia a year ago, and it wasn’t the first time; I tend to pick up chest issues) and DS is asthmatic. DH thinks I am being an absolute panic merchant loon. And it doesn’t help that his job involves shaking many hands and travelling all over. I’d go to ground now quite frankly but he’s refusing to consider modifying his lifestyle at all. WWYD?

FelicityFebruary · 27/02/2020 21:15

Some companies have issued advice to STOP shaking hands and have curtailed travel. They must have some commercially grounded reasons.

nibdedibble · 27/02/2020 21:24

Just saw old friend, who went on an outing last week, a local thing. At the end the organiser said ‘I’m going to need all your contact details’ as apparently her son had got back from China, felt unwell and gone to dr, been told to self-quarantine and had done so by hunkering downnat his mum’s. She’d done the day trip and only then mentioned it to people as she collected their details in case she got it from him and had to trace all her contact.

I don’t think the likelihood is that all those people will get it but my head is exploding slightly at the fucking liberty she’s taken with people’s health there. Clearly not unaware, but at the same time thick as shit!

Dannii123 · 27/02/2020 21:49

DW works in a large hospital and has been told there is no protective clothing available. Whether that’s just her department she doesn’t know. She thinks government advice/action is “incomprehensible” and is all being done to avoid panic/economic crisis.

ofwarren · 27/02/2020 21:51

@nibdedibble I would have been absolutely furious!! 😱

Twixes · 27/02/2020 21:54

@Dannii123 that's so scary

Snowdropdelight · 27/02/2020 21:55

No one seems to have mentioned air purifiers.

We got a cheap aldi one before Xmas. If someone falls ill should the purifier go in with them or be put outside the infected door to help the others!!

We only have one. It may not even work on the virus however but it kicked into action after we Blew out candles.

BBC news at 10 reporting another uk case

ofwarren · 27/02/2020 22:02

Where is it @whereareyousleep? Is it not the northern Ireland case?

whereareyousleep · 27/02/2020 22:04

Oops yeah sorry just heard 16 and forgot about the NI case

ViolaTricolora · 27/02/2020 22:10

For BridgetoTherabitia:

Germany had 26 cases at 15.00h, according to the government site. www.bundesgesundheitsministerium.de/coronavirus.html

There are 'active' clusters in two bündeslander, Nordrhein-Westfalen (6 yesterday, one of whom is treated in Rheinland-Pfalz) and Badem-Würtemberg (4 yesterday, two separate travellers from Italy) Furthermore there was an old cluster in Bayern which is under control and there were some cases among quarantained repatriates from Wuhan, most of whom, (or maybe all) are not infected anymore.
www.spiegel.de/panorama/coronavirus-nordrhein-westfalen-400-menschen-in-heinsberg-in-quarantaene-a-4ee1dd0c-0b45-4fa9-bbf8-eb92888187dd and www.rki.de/EN/Home/homepage_node.html

The German version of the Daily mail says that today there are 14 new cases in Nordrhein-Westfalen, specifically in Kreis Heinsberg, 4 new ones in Baden-Württemberg and 1 new in Bayern and that there are 30 confirmed cases in total. They do tend to be factually correct, I think the others sources haven't updated yet.
They also included a nice map: m.bild.de/news/inland/news-inland/coronavirus-alle-infos-zur-lungenkrankheit-im-nachrichten-ticker-68674604.bildMobile.html

echobench · 27/02/2020 22:13

Unfortunately the virus is too small to be filtered out by air purifiers.

Destinysdaughter · 27/02/2020 22:19

Just saw this on Twitter. Not good ...

BridgeToTerabithia · 27/02/2020 22:26

@ViolaTricolora Thank you. It is as I feared that family member is going to the place where is has been confirmed.

Gammeldragz · 27/02/2020 22:47

@sideorderofchips pot noodles take up a lot of room (not to mention all the plastic). I bought the sachets versions (mugshot 8 think) for prepping and they take up so much less room.

AlohaMolly · 27/02/2020 22:52

I visited my GP this afternoon for a preplanned appointment and there was nothing up about coronavirus at all.

Mixitupalot · 27/02/2020 22:57

I went to the shops today to start buying tablets, bleach etc and the cost of some items had tripled!! I noticed, paracetamol, Abadan, standard bleach & many foodie ts so much more expensive. DH works in retail said he’s found the same & it’s the virus that’s affecting the prices.

Gammeldragz · 27/02/2020 22:58

That's shocking! PHE sent out advice to all the UK surgeries to put up signs and screen people before giving appointments. Weeks ago.

MakeLemonade · 27/02/2020 23:02

I’ve been lurking on these threads for a while, thanks so much for all the helpful tips, feeling reasonably well prepared.

I’m just watching BBC Question Time and it’s painful to watch the answers on government preparedness. Not giving me much confidence!

AmelieTaylor · 27/02/2020 23:05

The pure-klenz hand gel posted up thread is anti-bac and does kill 99.9% the same as the others do

Killing 99.9% of bacteria

NOT virus. It’s NOT the same thing. It NEEDS to have 70%+ alcohol to kill COVID -10.

It worries me that people are seeing ‘kilks99.9% of bacteria & are thinking they’re protecting themselves from CV when they haven’t checked it has the essential 70% alcohol level required.

Also, the MASKS, if you’re not using M95/FFP3 you’re not protected against CV Some of them offer some protection, but you NEED to know what you’re buying & make knowledge based decisions.
