Prepping for a pandemic...7

7th thread on prepping for a pandemic and following the risk of a COVID pandemic.

Anxiety

As Preppers we tend to look at a reasonable worst case scenario to plan for. Everyone is welcome on the thread but if you find it makes you anxious be kind to yourself and think about sticking to once daily updates from the BBC or similar Thanks

General COVID Info

The estimated replication rate is R= 2 to 4 based on latest expert estimates. This means each infected person spreads the virus to between 2 and 4 people. Experts estimate that, unchecked, it could infect 60% of the population.

Around 15-20% of cases are thought to be severe - that is resulting in the need for hospitalisation. Around 3-5% requiring ventilation.

The estimated mortality rate is around 1-2% at the moment (compared to 0.01-0.1% for flu). This may change as it is very difficult to estimate mortality.

Children tend to have milder symptoms. Those over 60 with underlying health issues and a history of smoking are more likely to be severe (although not exclusively this type of person).

Spread of COVID

It is estimated that the average incubation period is 3-5 days but can be as long as 24 days.

It can be spread with no symptoms.

It can be spread via droplet (cough/sneeze), aerosol (breathing same air in very close quarters), bodily fluids, fecal/oral route and formites (via surfaces, up to 28 days in the right circumstances but up to 3-5 days in more typical circumstances).

Updates

As this is a novel virus and knowledge is constantly being updated - I will post updates as they become available with links to source.

I am not a medical expert so any opinions or conjecture of my own should be taken with a pinch of salt!

Prepping Scenarios

Most of us are prepping for the following situations:

  • Wanting to stay indoors for 2-4 weeks + in case of a local outbreak / schools being closed
  • Potentially being ill with a flu type illness lasting 2-3 weeks with one or more of the household having the illness
  • Having to take a family member to hospital for COVID or any other reason during an outbreak

Prepping Items

Threads 1&2 have lists of things to think about to prep for the first scenario as do the Brexit prepping threads.

Main differences/additions to something like the Brexit list are:

  • Face masks if you can get them for any trips you have to make in public during an outbreak. These don't offer full protection and cannot be 100% relied upon but are probably better than nothing if you make sure you wear them correctly and dispose of them correctly. N95 masks are best but expensive and harder to wear, surgical face masks are second best. Dust masks are not going to help.
  • Hand sanitiser needs to be 60% or more alcohol content
  • Dettol / bleach / Miltons to disinfect. Not all disinfectants work but these three do
  • Plenty of at home/over counter treatments for flu type symptoms should you need to treat at home
  • Tissues (lots of) should you catch the virus
  • Think about meals that are easy to cook and eat should you be ill or both parents be ill at the same time (soup for example)
  • For a potential hospital trip you may want to prep a 'go bag' should you need to take someone to hospital with the virus (or anything else) during an outbreak. See Thread 1&2 for examples of what people are packing
  • Frequent and thorough hand washing, not touching your face and social distancing (no handshakes, hugs, etc) are some of the most effective ways to stay virus free

Other Thoughts

India have announced that they are stopping exports of some antibiotics, hormone treatments and vitamin supplements as they rely on China for raw materials.

Many factories that supplied fibre for use in sanitary towels and tampons are being diverted to manufacture face masks. Consider stocking up or changing to sustainable items (cloth STs, mooncup, period pants)

I’m having a lot of random thoughts right now and I keep forgetting them but here’s a few in case they’re useful:

Keeping my nails short (don’t usually) so that the hand gel gets everywhere more easily

Wipe the sanitiser bottle with your gelled hands as you’ve touched it to open it - same with soap and tap

Wear red lipstick if you’re a mouth toucher like me as it stops you from doing that

At some point will start using my Patagonia coat as it can be chucked in the washer with some Zoflora as I’m avoiding tube handrails so much that my wool coats are constantly leaning against surfaces instead and I’m not sure how long the virus can live on fabric

^Will run my steamer over in the meantime

Of all medicines, make sure you have inhalers if you use them as these will likely be dished out to affected people (a Wuhan-based patient mentioned he got one on the radio)

If you can’t get whole egg powder, you can get egg white powder in all the fitness supplement stores

Protein shakes (or something like Slim Fast or Build-Up) can be made with totally non-perishable ingredients so that’s a thought for total SHTF circumstances

Going to also prep by working on my physical and mental health too Smile

Thinking of taking up cycling for the commute Confused but this is a STRETCH for me

Started refusing to shake hands at work yesterday - it was surprisingly well received

Remember to use knuckles to touch lift buttons and self-checkout screens (and then wash or sanitise hands - safer as the underside is clean)

If you buy oats you can make flour and milk too

Independent pharmacies still have hand gel

I’m mostly done now but from what I’m reading in the press it doesn’t look like we’re ever going to find ourselves in a lockdown situation in this country. It seems that we’re going to be able to/be expected to just go about our business as usual if the virus reaches our towns and cities. Which means there probably won’t be panic buying, empty shelves, lack of items etc.
I always thought that if the virus was in our area then we would all be advised to stay indoors, not go to work, use transport, socialise, probable shop and business closures etc. and that is when I expected our prepping stash to come in useful, that we’d all be hunkered down indoors. However it seems that the government have said there’ll be no such thing implemented here. I do worry more now as we‘ll still be expected to work etc. DH works at a company with a lot of international travel. And if it’s in the area I’m guessing he would still have to work. I guess I was looking at the stash today thinking what was the point if life is expected to go on as normal. Although I am glad I’ve prepped in case we’re too ill to go out.

AmelieTaylor · 27/02/2020 16:11

@RedLentilYellowLentil

I hadn’t thought if it like that 😂

It’s going to take more than a pair of blue gloves to make me look like a professional though - unless professional scruff counts?!

I might just have to get a set of scrubs - double bonus,I don’t have to
Out ‘real’ clothes on! I can just pull them over my leggings 👍🏻

@MissPoldark

What do you need gloves for though? They are needed by healthcare workers, let’s not take resources away from them

I don’t think the NHS are exactly queuing up at retail outlets to buy a packet of gloves. We sent 650, 000 packets of gloves, masks etc to China.

When I’m cleaning up after other people I’d quite like a barrier between me & other people’s bodily emissions on a good day, let alone right now!

DAILYMAIL

I’ll second/third/whatever @RedLentilYellowLentil
Said

Hey, DAILY MAIL, if you want to make yourselves useful, why not start a campaign to free Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe before she catches coronavirus and dies in an Iranian prison?

Do something useful?!

@AvocadoOwl
@bellinisurge

You’d think right 🙇🏻‍♀️

@WeBuiltCisCityOnSexistRoles

I’m
Not fancying my mittens as any
Kind of barrier when it comes to dealing with spew or poo 🤮 💩🤮

And it’s going to take gloves made of fecking spikes to train me to stop touching my
Face 😖 or a decent mask 👹

@JustMeAndMyTins. Hmm maybe black.

@bellinisurge. Maybe I should discuss at what point I should let the Gardner & cleaner go and how much should I give them to help them through this ‘difficult time’?

@ofwarren. Airtight it not? I wasn’t totally sure as I’ve lost track of whether they’ve made their mind up about Airborne or not? I thought they had & it was, then listening to somethung the other day, some ‘supposedly in the know’ bloke said it’s not, so I’m 🤷🏻‍♀️ As I said, I’ve got a LOT if sanding to do & hate wearing goggles, but I’ve ordered a ‘nice’ pair but I think they’re vented at the side (slightly better than my safety glasses though for sanding and a pair of ‘slim’ ones from screw fix £4.99 that aren’t vented which will be crap for sanding, but I’d wear if I needed for CV

GorkyMcPorky · 27/02/2020 16:13

@pancakefiend I think we will find that we can't simply just carry on as if nothing is happening, once we start getting a critical mass of cases. Services can't be provided if they're not staffed.

ofwarren · 27/02/2020 16:18

An A&E consultant just wrote this on twitter:
It’s official: ‘business as usual’ in the NHS until someone in a high place says otherwise.
No staff released for training. No extra equipment. No intense preparation. Carry on as usual.
A wasted opportunity we will come to regret?

AmelieTaylor · 27/02/2020 16:24

@JustMeAndMyTins. I’ve cut my nails, not incredibly short, but shorter than usual and I’m being particularly mindful when washing my hands and putting on gel. I’m going to shock my nails and put some nail polish on
I’m hoping it will help me to stop touching my face so much. 💅🏻

@PancakeFiend. The way I look at it, even if we aren’t requested to stay indoors, I’m going to want to! And this is England a bit of sunshine & all the BBQ food known to man is gone in the blink of an eye, an inch of snow and the shelves are empty - we’re a country of panic buyers even when
It’s not necessary- I don’t see this being any different!

If I’m prepared enough I won’t have to queue with the snorting germ spreading panickers! And that suits me just fine!

AmelieTaylor · 27/02/2020 16:28

@ofwarren

I’m hoping that’s because they’re preparing atbfeducated facilities, but have resources to throw into existing hospitals etc when necessary.

I expect I’m being massively optimistic. However, that’s better for my mental health because if I think about them being as crap as my rational mind tells me they will, panic will set it and that won’t change anything, except I’ll be personally less prepared for the TSTHTF.

MissPoldark · 27/02/2020 16:31

I usually have nails but I chopped them all off this week too. I just thought “what’s the point of these anyway?”.
The only thing they’re useful for is scratching Grin

SleepWarrior · 27/02/2020 16:31

That horrible no nail biting polish might be a good call to stop putting fingers near mouths, especially for kids when they're at school and you can't remind them!

MissPoldark · 27/02/2020 16:32

ofwarren
That is really disturbing. If the government want people to stay calm they need to bloody give us some reassurance that everything is being done to prepare.

WitchDoc · 27/02/2020 16:37

Iran's former ambassador to the Vatican, Hadi Khosroshahi, has died of coronavirus - IRNA

I know it's the former ambassador but could there be a link?

AmelieTaylor · 27/02/2020 16:39

@SleepWarrior. When I wire nail polish (lifetime ago) I found the Superdrug nail polish remover pads in the white pot tasted disgusting. It really helped me stop putting my fingers near my mouth. Friends were trying to stop kids biting nails and found them more effective than the no bite stuff!! If it was just my mouth I’d do that, but I’m hoping the colour will stop me generally touching my face & rubbing my eyes.

echobench · 27/02/2020 16:43

Another prepping thing I’m doing is keeping the car topped up with petrol. It doesn’t take much to spark panic buying of fuel and it feels reassuring to have a fullish tank.

ofwarren · 27/02/2020 16:45

@WitchDoc that was my first thought too

Gammeldragz · 27/02/2020 16:48

Popped into the Dr's surgery to order repeat prescriptions, mostly inhalers for DS2 as he's my main concern.

Cut my nails last night for hygiene reasons, though I do this anyway for work (nurse) but probably would have left them a week more normally.

@PancakeFiend exactly what I've come to suspect too, but at least it will all get used eventually and it makes me feel like I've done something.

EliK · 27/02/2020 16:58

Ds and I just helped ourselves to crisps from the stash...
I know an A&E doctor who said it's nothing to worry about and same death rate as flu. I don't know if he's deliberately trying to play it down or he's just genuinely clueless.

YoursTunbridgeWells · 27/02/2020 17:01

Some really rather alarming stuff in press:

Survival of the fittest is in print - broadly you won't get admitted if you need ventiliation. In my interpretation the illest are too time consuming and costly to treat so you don't waste time and resources on them:

www.independent.co.uk/news/health/coronavirus-uk-deaths-nhs-intensive-care-flu-wise-men-protocol-a9361916.html

Plus as someone else mentioned - plans for mass burial sites.

WitchDoc · 27/02/2020 17:02

@WitchDoc that was my first thought too

Mine too & I'm sorry, didn't know how to quote someone on here. Is it just a case of putting an @ sign before their username? Thanks x

VivaLeBeaver · 27/02/2020 17:07

The daily mail have screenshotted MN prepper posts and included advice from MNers on what to stock up on! 😁

RedLentilYellowLentil · 27/02/2020 17:15

I have the opposite problem to all you MNers with long nails. I'm hoping this is my big opportunity to stop biting mine. Fortunately antibac tastes bloody foul.

EliK · 27/02/2020 17:27

So basically the plan in the UK is prevention but people are constantly flying to and from airports here with no checks? No wonder we're preparing for the worst.

ofwarren · 27/02/2020 17:29

650 cases of #Coronavirus in #italy

DominicCummingsForehead · 27/02/2020 17:32

650 cases in Italy

That's shot up rather bloody quick!

DominicCummingsForehead · 27/02/2020 17:35

By the looks of this Governments attitude compared to that of China's, it's going to spread like absolute wildfire here.

I mean, I know we can't weld people into their homes here, but....some genuine effort to contain it would be good surely?

sideorderofchips · 27/02/2020 17:46

Not sure what I think of this.
