Prepping for a pandemic...7

7th thread on prepping for a pandemic and following the risk of a COVID pandemic.

Anxiety

As Preppers we tend to look at a reasonable worst case scenario to plan for. Everyone is welcome on the thread but if you find it makes you anxious be kind to yourself and think about sticking to once daily updates from the BBC or similar Thanks

General COVID Info

The estimated replication rate is R= 2 to 4 based on latest expert estimates. This means each infected person spreads the virus to between 2 and 4 people. Experts estimate that, unchecked, it could infect 60% of the population.

Around 15-20% of cases are thought to be severe - that is resulting in the need for hospitalisation. Around 3-5% requiring ventilation.

The estimated mortality rate is around 1-2% at the moment (compared to 0.01-0.1% for flu). This may change as it is very difficult to estimate mortality.

Children tend to have milder symptoms. Those over 60 with underlying health issues and a history of smoking are more likely to be severe (although not exclusively this type of person).

Spread of COVID

It is estimated that the average incubation period is 3-5 days but can be as long as 24 days.

It can be spread with no symptoms.

It can be spread via droplet (cough/sneeze), aerosol (breathing same air in very close quarters), bodily fluids, fecal/oral route and formites (via surfaces, up to 28 days in the right circumstances but up to 3-5 days in more typical circumstances).

Updates

As this is a novel virus and knowledge is constantly being updated - I will post updates as they become available with links to source.

I am not a medical expert so any opinions or conjecture of my own should be taken with a pinch of salt!

Prepping Scenarios

Most of us are prepping for the following situations:

  • Wanting to stay indoors for 2-4 weeks + in case of a local outbreak / schools being closed
  • Potentially being ill with a flu type illness lasting 2-3 weeks with one or more of the household having the illness
  • Having to take a family member to hospital for COVID or any other reason during an outbreak

Prepping Items

Threads 1&2 have lists of things to think about to prep for the first scenario as do the Brexit prepping threads.

Main differences/additions to something like the Brexit list are:

  • Face masks if you can get them for any trips you have to make in public during an outbreak. These don't offer full protection and cannot be 100% relied upon but are probably better than nothing if you make sure you wear them correctly and dispose of them correctly. N95 masks are best but expensive and harder to wear, surgical face masks are second best. Dust masks are not going to help.
  • Hand sanitiser needs to be 60% or more alcohol content
  • Dettol / bleach / Miltons to disinfect. Not all disinfectants work but these three do
  • Plenty of at home/over counter treatments for flu type symptoms should you need to treat at home
  • Tissues (lots of) should you catch the virus
  • Think about meals that are easy to cook and eat should you be ill or both parents be ill at the same time (soup for example)
  • For a potential hospital trip you may want to prep a 'go bag' should you need to take someone to hospital with the virus (or anything else) during an outbreak. See Thread 1&2 for examples of what people are packing
  • Frequent and thorough hand washing, not touching your face and social distancing (no handshakes, hugs, etc) are some of the most effective ways to stay virus free

Other Thoughts

India have announced that they are stopping exports of some antibiotics, hormone treatments and vitamin supplements as they rely on China for raw materials.

Many factories that supplied fibre for use in sanitary towels and tampons are being diverted to manufacture face masks. Consider stocking up or changing to sustainable items (cloth STs, mooncup, period pants)

The blue nitrile are standard NHS issue fwiw @AmelieTaylor. So you'd look like a professional, not a twat. Smile

TenShortStories · 27/02/2020 14:56

For countries that don't yet have any community transmission this is your window of opportunity to nip things in the bud

What are the WHO suggesting as the way to do this? Do they have a list of specific recommendations? Will have a look on their website but if anyone knows a good link I would be interested!

MissPoldark · 27/02/2020 15:02

What do you need gloves for though? They are needed by healthcare workers, let’s not take resources away from them.

bellinisurge · 27/02/2020 15:08

If you are caring for a sick person at home you need gloves.

RedLentilYellowLentil · 27/02/2020 15:08

Hey, DAILY MAIL, if you want to make yourselves useful, why not start a campaign to free Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe before she catches coronavirus and dies in an Iranian prison?

bellinisurge · 27/02/2020 15:09

Now that would be a great campaign for the Daily Mail to start.

AvocadoOwl · 27/02/2020 15:10

LOL at the Daily Mail article! The comments are quite good value too.

I think the point SO MANY people are missing is that most of us aren't getting supplies in because we think the UK is going to spiral into some kind of apocalyptic wasteland (although I appreciate that narrative suits the DM readership better); we are prepping because we have SEEN that other countries have been quick to lock down towns and cities, and have seen that when these things happen people panic buy and clear out supermarkets. These aren't risks plucked from our wild imaginations, they are situations unfolding not a million miles away as I type this.

Slowly building up a few weeks supply of food and loo roll so that we don't have to join the bunfights when it kicks off in Tesco is normal sensible behaviour and if anyone thinks differently I really have to question their grasp of the current situation.

bellinisurge · 27/02/2020 15:13

I would have thought the Italian experience would show us a good example of what can happen in a developed , pretty much like us kind of country . We are more closely packed, more populous. Do you want to get into a bun fight in a supermarket?

WeBuiltCisCityOnSexistRoles · 27/02/2020 15:15

Sorry for this in advance, but I think if you wear blue surgical type gloves in public you'd be looking towards the Twat end of the scale rather than Professional as a professional wouldn't be wearing the gloves out and about, would they? Isn't there a rule about not wearing scrubs etc in public? I think this as I vaguely remember seeing a poster in my local hospital's cafe area

(Although I don't really care about looking like a twat in public as I am a bit of a twat, so don't rely on me for advice Grin)

I'm just going to wear normal gloves I think, more in an effort to stop me touching my face than anything else. I have facial piercings and a terrible tendency to fiddle with them. Thin surgical gloves wouldn't stop me Blush I'm thinking of mittens

WeBuiltCisCityOnSexistRoles · 27/02/2020 15:18

I can see the Daily Mail headline now...

MUMSNETTER'S PLAN TO WEAR MITTENS TO STOP THE SPREAD OF CORONAVIRUS VIA PIERCINGS

bellinisurge · 27/02/2020 15:23

Mittens, avocados, Prosecco, au pairs - you need the full set for the Daily Mail. Grin

JustMeAndMyTins · 27/02/2020 15:26

Amelie I bought black nitrile ones on Amazon as I figured they might be more passible in public.

All, there are still disposable FFP3 masks online but you have to check loads of sites as they’re constantly selling out, coming back, some are delayed shipping but some only by a week. Uvex, Moldex and Protex are some of the brands.

ofwarren · 27/02/2020 15:26

Those of you who have goggles, which type do you have?

JustMeAndMyTins · 27/02/2020 15:31

ofwarren I got safety glasses instead of goggles as they’re slightly less wild-looking. Bollé is the brand I ended up with (via Amazon). No idea what’s best.

ofwarren · 27/02/2020 15:33

Iran's former ambassador to the Vatican, Hadi Khosroshahi, has died of coronavirus - IRNA

londonhospital · 27/02/2020 15:35

I don’t approve of swearing but suggest we include FUCK OFF DAILY MAIL in every post.

ofwarren · 27/02/2020 15:35

I'm worried about the gaps at the sides of safety glasses @JustMeAndMyTins
Do we need air tight?

AmelieTaylor · 27/02/2020 15:43

@RedLentilYellowLentil

Though it might have its uses if we all run out of loo roll, I suppose

Even my bum deserves better than that rag

JustMeAndMyTins · 27/02/2020 15:44

ofwarren Use elastic to pull them flush against your skin. They have a rim that allows for sealing - unlike normal glasses. Have a look and you’ll see what I mean. Smile

ItsNotJustTheFuckingFlu · 27/02/2020 15:46

Screwfix has had the restrictions to five per customer for at least week already. I bought a pack of five over a week ago and the website had the "five per customer and orders will be reduced at collection" all over the website then.

When husband picked them up he was also told that he won't be able to order anymore for six weeks. That was just the staff but the five per order was def there over a week ago (possibly two weeks ago)

Castoreum · 27/02/2020 15:50

White nitrile gloves here for anyone interested: amazon.co.uk/dp/B07TY1NPSP]]

There are tons of all colours all over Amazon and most seem to be in stock.

nibdedibble · 27/02/2020 15:50

I think I got the last teeny hand gel in Sainsbury’s today Grin
Absolutely no panic buying on show, no empty shelves, everything fine. Good.
For people who are confused or caustic about having some extra supplies in:
It’s like laying out your clothes the night before. You don’t have to do it, but having done it there is then no possibility that you’ll have to run round like a blue-arsed fly at 7:30 the next day, fretting that all your knickers are still in the wash.

NannyGoatC · 27/02/2020 15:55

ofwarren
All the talk about gloves made me remember we had a chemotherapy home spill kit given from hospital. Opened looking for gloves, found goggles in it too.
Keepsafe hurricane, quick google and online for only a few £s.

Someone on the main AIBU thread, has lost two weeks work due to CV. Perhaps, we should all check where we stand.

DH isn't clear whether he'd work from the office or home (there's no doubt they'll be work though), but would be paid due to self isolation or illness or choosing to isolate as I'm in self isolation. My other two jobs conditions aren't so great, but we know where we stand and at least we can pay the basic bills.
