Prepping for a pandemic...7

7th thread on prepping for a pandemic and following the risk of a COVID pandemic.

Anxiety

As Preppers we tend to look at a reasonable worst case scenario to plan for. Everyone is welcome on the thread but if you find it makes you anxious be kind to yourself and think about sticking to once daily updates from the BBC or similar Thanks

General COVID Info

The estimated replication rate is R= 2 to 4 based on latest expert estimates. This means each infected person spreads the virus to between 2 and 4 people. Experts estimate that, unchecked, it could infect 60% of the population.

Around 15-20% of cases are thought to be severe - that is resulting in the need for hospitalisation. Around 3-5% requiring ventilation.

The estimated mortality rate is around 1-2% at the moment (compared to 0.01-0.1% for flu). This may change as it is very difficult to estimate mortality.

Children tend to have milder symptoms. Those over 60 with underlying health issues and a history of smoking are more likely to be severe (although not exclusively this type of person).

Spread of COVID

It is estimated that the average incubation period is 3-5 days but can be as long as 24 days.

It can be spread with no symptoms.

It can be spread via droplet (cough/sneeze), aerosol (breathing same air in very close quarters), bodily fluids, fecal/oral route and formites (via surfaces, up to 28 days in the right circumstances but up to 3-5 days in more typical circumstances).

Updates

As this is a novel virus and knowledge is constantly being updated - I will post updates as they become available with links to source.

I am not a medical expert so any opinions or conjecture of my own should be taken with a pinch of salt!

Prepping Scenarios

Most of us are prepping for the following situations:

  • Wanting to stay indoors for 2-4 weeks + in case of a local outbreak / schools being closed
  • Potentially being ill with a flu type illness lasting 2-3 weeks with one or more of the household having the illness
  • Having to take a family member to hospital for COVID or any other reason during an outbreak

Prepping Items

Threads 1&2 have lists of things to think about to prep for the first scenario as do the Brexit prepping threads.

Main differences/additions to something like the Brexit list are:

  • Face masks if you can get them for any trips you have to make in public during an outbreak. These don't offer full protection and cannot be 100% relied upon but are probably better than nothing if you make sure you wear them correctly and dispose of them correctly. N95 masks are best but expensive and harder to wear, surgical face masks are second best. Dust masks are not going to help.
  • Hand sanitiser needs to be 60% or more alcohol content
  • Dettol / bleach / Miltons to disinfect. Not all disinfectants work but these three do
  • Plenty of at home/over counter treatments for flu type symptoms should you need to treat at home
  • Tissues (lots of) should you catch the virus
  • Think about meals that are easy to cook and eat should you be ill or both parents be ill at the same time (soup for example)
  • For a potential hospital trip you may want to prep a 'go bag' should you need to take someone to hospital with the virus (or anything else) during an outbreak. See Thread 1&2 for examples of what people are packing
  • Frequent and thorough hand washing, not touching your face and social distancing (no handshakes, hugs, etc) are some of the most effective ways to stay virus free

Other Thoughts

India have announced that they are stopping exports of some antibiotics, hormone treatments and vitamin supplements as they rely on China for raw materials.

Many factories that supplied fibre for use in sanitary towels and tampons are being diverted to manufacture face masks. Consider stocking up or changing to sustainable items (cloth STs, mooncup, period pants)

There's talk in Buxton that the GP surgery will re-open tomorrow, and that it is linked to the case that has been announced.

NewYearNewTwatName · 27/02/2020 12:08

just in case anyone thought I was using multiple milton wipes from he car when I get home. it's just one wipe.

Givemeabreakpls · 27/02/2020 12:09

I’m so sorry to ask as it’s been said so many times, but which masks are best to get? I’m doing a amazon shop now and hoping to get some.

tiddlerthefish · 27/02/2020 12:10

Oh god. I never thought I'd end up stashing but it really does seem sensible now (I have two small children). Have just done an extra online shop to get my stash box going - extra Calpol and Nurofen for the kids, nappies, loads of pasta/rice etc, tins, jars and loo roll! And Dettol soap.

Thanks for these threads.

Hand Cream

I HATE hand cream, but thought I should really try to keep the from going dry and Tesco had a special on the Norwegian stuff, so I got one of the red one & one if the blue one. Both are actually ‘ok’ for me if used sparingly, do I’m going to order more if that as I really generally can’t tolerate stuff on my hands at all.

Someone (sorry, so many of us I’m getting confused who said what now🙀suggested the Aveno lotion was good too (I can’t use it, but they like it)

Notmyideamovingon · 27/02/2020 12:12

The ones on amazon more are way too expensive people are profiteering. Avoid, avoid, avoid

Notmyideamovingon · 27/02/2020 12:14

I ordered on screw fix yesterday to collect today.wanted to order more and more out of stock at all local stores (within 15 miles)

wrongsideofhistorymyarse · 27/02/2020 12:15

I've just done a big online shop and ordered hand sanitiser, which is out of stock locally. I'll be a lot happier when I've got catfood and litter in.

Notmyideamovingon · 27/02/2020 12:16

Going out now to collect

ofwarren · 27/02/2020 12:16

I managed to order a box of 10 masks from wickes. Took 3 days to come.

PurpleCalm · 27/02/2020 12:16

Concerned at the lack of hand gel in my local shops. I've been to 4 Aldis, a sainsburys, a morrisons and an asda. All the aldis had zero - usually there hundreds of them at the checkouts - just a sign saying "out of stock"

The bigger supermarkets had no own brand, only carex strawberry laces scent £2 for a small bottle :O

I haven't tried Lidl - will go there tomorrow and I suppose Boots is an option.

Whilst in Aldi I saw one of this week's special buys is the dettol aerosol spray, £1.99. I bought 2 - they are easy just to give a quick spray on furniture, handles etc and probably slightly more cost effective because the dettol wipes are so expensive.

MissPoldark · 27/02/2020 12:19

I notice not much has been said about the condition of the Chinese woman who tested positive after flying into Heathrow and then presenting at Lewisham hospital.

I don’t think we can assume anything from that. It was also the case with the first cases from York. The U.K. hasn’t been giving constant updates on individual patients like some other countries have.

Dennisreynoldsduster · 27/02/2020 12:20

My Lidl has totally sold out of anything antibac this morning

However pound shop still has some as well as dettol soap packs

I’ve got my final shop coming on Saturday and then I’ll be topping up with my hello fresh boxes and cook ready meal deliveries so I don’t have to delve into the stash too much

*i was really hoping that come summer we would be looking back on this and thinking oh that was all a storm in a teacup wasn’t it (not disrespecting anyone who has lost people to it but I mean in terms of in the UK) but that’s looking very unlikely now isn’t it

Banana0pancakes · 27/02/2020 12:29

Just want to say thanks @ofwarren for all you're putting into this.

If anyone's looking for larger bottles of hand sanitizer, just noticed gompels has it back in stock www.gompels.co.uk/sanell-alcohol-hand-sanitiser-400ml.html

AmelieTaylor · 27/02/2020 12:33

@Givemeabreakpls. You need a FFP3 mask. Doesn’t matter if it’s disposable or reuse able except the reuseabke ones last a month with each set of filters so they’re easier (and less risk of putting any contaminants on your face than with the disposable ones whichever you get you must google how to put them in & remove them!! Sounds stupid (it’s a mask right?!) but unless they’re used properly you’re wasting your time.

Lots of people recommending the Eclipe (about £18-23) but I bought the JVS ‘press to check’ as I liked being able to be sure I had a good fit. It came with a set of filters & I bought one more set. I’m going to get another set or two (I have a LOT) if sanding to do anyway

I tried a couple of others but they were too big for my face. I preferred the filters going across my face than up it, which is why I chose the JVS over the Eclipse.

I think the filters for both will come and go out of stock, but you’ll be able to get them

A lovely friend (waves) has the surgical ones and us happy with those & I can see her point - but as I have sanding to do I was happy to buy the one with filters.

I would get them through screw fix if you can as you can go and pick them
Up. I’d personally be very wary of ordering them online (prices have rocketed & some people have ordered them but not received them).

IceWings · 27/02/2020 12:35

Sadly IceWings a lot of tinned soups are not gluten free
Loads are though. My local Tesco has over 20 different types of canned gluten free soup. Many of their chilled curries are gluten free too. As are Asda’s chilled curries and their own brand gnocchi.

Particularly for those asking about protein options -

eggs can be preserved for up to 1 year if coated with oil.

RedLentilYellowLentil · 27/02/2020 12:37

But I think we can assume it means she's not recovering as quickly as the Brighton lot did @MissPoldark. They were only in hospital 4 or 5 days, iirc.

Effieray · 27/02/2020 12:37

I can echo the last line of the document I posted; this book is pretty comprehensive:
**For an extremely thorough primer on preparing for Covid-19, check out Cat Ellis’s book, The Wuhan Coronavirus Survival Guide.

(Think it’s gone up in price since I bought it last week.)

shouldhavecalleditoatabix · 27/02/2020 12:40

I've seen a couple of mentions of the woman that has been re-infected from Japan. Are there any reputable sources for this please? This to me is one of the more concerning aspects.

RedLentilYellowLentil · 27/02/2020 12:42

They are talking on the Guardian live feed about Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe. There's a rumour, currently denied by the Iranian authorities, that there's an outbreak at the prison she's being held in. Our government is expressing concern that she may be at risk.

Wouldn't it be amazing if this was the push that Iran needed to finally cave and release her. Praying isn't really in my skillset but if it were this is definitely one thing I would be including in today's edition.

AmelieTaylor · 27/02/2020 12:42

None of the Superdrug’s around here have any hand gel.

I like the Clinell one. Nice texture and inoffensive smell. But it’s hard to get in the bigger bottles. Another couple of brands I’ve ordered haven’t shown up yet.

I don’t really want to drive into town to get little ones from primark etc. So I’ll just keep hoping the online ones will turn up soon. I still have a few small Clinell ones left.

If I could order 5 litres of that I would, but not too keep to order 5l if one I haven’t tried.
