Prepping for a pandemic...7

wheresmymojo · 26/02/2020 19:29

7th thread on prepping for a pandemic and following the risk of a COVID pandemic.

Anxiety

As Preppers we tend to look at a reasonable worst case scenario to plan for. Everyone is welcome on the thread but if you find it makes you anxious be kind to yourself and think about sticking to once daily updates from the BBC or similar Thanks

General COVID Info

The estimated replication rate is R= 2 to 4 based on latest expert estimates. This means each infected person spreads the virus to between 2 and 4 people. Experts estimate that, unchecked, it could infect 60% of the population.

Around 15-20% of cases are thought to be severe - that is resulting in the need for hospitalisation. Around 3-5% requiring ventilation.

The estimated mortality rate is around 1-2% at the moment (compared to 0.01-0.1% for flu). This may change as it is very difficult to estimate mortality.

Children tend to have milder symptoms. Those over 60 with underlying health issues and a history of smoking are more likely to be severe (although not exclusively this type of person).

Spread of COVID

It is estimated that the average incubation period is 3-5 days but can be as long as 24 days.

It can be spread with no symptoms.

It can be spread via droplet (cough/sneeze), aerosol (breathing same air in very close quarters), bodily fluids, fecal/oral route and formites (via surfaces, up to 28 days in the right circumstances but up to 3-5 days in more typical circumstances).

Updates

As this is a novel virus and knowledge is constantly being updated - I will post updates as they become available with links to source.

I am not a medical expert so any opinions or conjecture of my own should be taken with a pinch of salt!

Prepping Scenarios

Most of us are prepping for the following situations:

  • Wanting to stay indoors for 2-4 weeks + in case of a local outbreak / schools being closed
  • Potentially being ill with a flu type illness lasting 2-3 weeks with one or more of the household having the illness
  • Having to take a family member to hospital for COVID or any other reason during an outbreak

Prepping Items

Threads 1&2 have lists of things to think about to prep for the first scenario as do the Brexit prepping threads.

Main differences/additions to something like the Brexit list are:

  • Face masks if you can get them for any trips you have to make in public during an outbreak. These don't offer full protection and cannot be 100% relied upon but are probably better than nothing if you make sure you wear them correctly and dispose of them correctly. N95 masks are best but expensive and harder to wear, surgical face masks are second best. Dust masks are not going to help.
  • Hand sanitiser needs to be 60% or more alcohol content
  • Dettol / bleach / Miltons to disinfect. Not all disinfectants work but these three do
  • Plenty of at home/over counter treatments for flu type symptoms should you need to treat at home
  • Tissues (lots of) should you catch the virus
  • Think about meals that are easy to cook and eat should you be ill or both parents be ill at the same time (soup for example)
  • For a potential hospital trip you may want to prep a 'go bag' should you need to take someone to hospital with the virus (or anything else) during an outbreak. See Thread 1&2 for examples of what people are packing
  • Frequent and thorough hand washing, not touching your face and social distancing (no handshakes, hugs, etc) are some of the most effective ways to stay virus free

Other Thoughts

India have announced that they are stopping exports of some antibiotics, hormone treatments and vitamin supplements as they rely on China for raw materials.

Many factories that supplied fibre for use in sanitary towels and tampons are being diverted to manufacture face masks. Consider stocking up or changing to sustainable items (cloth STs, mooncup, period pants)

My hill walk earlier, turned into a walk to Tescos and back up a slight incline with two bags shoppingSmile.

I think there's been an element of panic buying, dettol gone, lots of cleaning products low, Spondex single use gloves (which I've been tempted to buy and haven't) sold out, pasta and pulses lower than usual, curry cans and pasta sauces very low and shockingly six cans tomatoes!! I was looking for some sweet and sour sauce as we haven't got anything like that, luckily half the shelf was full. Often go in around 10am, so know what stocks like. Lots of toilet rolls though.

Calmonthesurfacebut · 27/02/2020 11:18

Thanks for this thread. I’ve done a bit of extra buying, just basics pasta, rice, frozen veg and mince/salmon/ chicken breasts in the freezer and ordered dog and cat food. Probs my okay for a couple of weeks.

Dd is coeliac, so just buying a load of tins and readymade meals isn’t an option for us.

I’m concerned too, as her school has been to Italy over half term, the kids are in school and whilst in lessons, those on the trip are separate at lunchtimes and breaks. They weren’t in the restricted areas, but not far.

Unfortunately dd 15 thinks this is it’s all a bit over the top and doesn’t want to use hand gel and is rubbish at hand washing! She hardly eats any fruit and veg, so this morning I told her the importance of keeping her immune system strong, but I just get the shrug!

No panic buying up here, but no hand gel anywhere now, I got lots of anti bac hand wipes, which are good at wiping surfaces too once you have done your hands.

Still planning on our theatre trip to London on Sat., unless any major changes. I have pack of fertility surface wipes for my handbag!!!

Calmonthesurfacebut · 27/02/2020 11:20

😂😂😂😂😂. Fertility!!! WTAF! 😂😂. That was supposed to be Dettol! That surely is the weirdest auto correct ever! 😂😳

Tryingnottobesociallyawkward · 27/02/2020 11:21

Lurker for a while, thanks to everyone posting here.

Re: hand gel, as I only got paid yesterday I went in a search. Superdrug and Boots were sold out each recommending the other and Poundland. Superdrug's website also had none for click and collect or delivery! Poundland and Sainsbury's had also sold out so my.lovely daughter and her boyfriend went scouring smaller non-chain chemists and found one that would sell 1 bottle of Milton hand gel to her as it was one per customer. I suggested Primark to her and they did indeed have loads although not by the tills but with the make up. She bought several bottles as yes they are only 80p but they are quite small and as places are already OOS or limiting to 1 per customer it won't take long to go through them.

And now a quick question, I bought some surgical spirit, is this the same as rubbing alcohol? Can I dilute some how?

RedLentilYellowLentil · 27/02/2020 11:27

Fertility wipes sound great! Grin

awesomeaircraft · 27/02/2020 11:33

Handgels - Just thought I would remind you that soap should be first go to. Handgels / sanitisers are to be used sparingly and actually not very good for kids depending on their chemical content. 2017 article but has CDC reference

FourTeaFallOut · 27/02/2020 11:41

Dd is coeliac, so just buying a load of tins and readymade meals isn’t an option for us.

Lots of things which are gluten free can be found in tins. Lots of baked beans - Branson beans for sure, lots of soups, pulses, Stagg chilli is gluten free, you can get chicken curry in a can (ds had this on a camping trip, it was ok) custard, fruit, veg.

RedLentilYellowLentil · 27/02/2020 11:42

I notice not much has been said about the condition of the Chinese woman who tested positive after flying into Heathrow and then presenting at Lewisham hospital. Of the UK cases, they are saying that 8 have been discharged (which I believe to be the cluster of people infected by the Brighton man) and one more plus the 4 from Arrowe Park are still hospitalised. If the Lewisham woman is the ninth, i.e. is still in hospital too, that would suggest she is really quite poorly, as it's been some time now.

Italy confirms 75 new cases of coronavirus and 2 new deaths; total of 528 cases and 14 deaths t.co/eUoE2bjB9j

Tryingnottobesociallyawkward · 27/02/2020 11:43

@awesomeaircraft I have been going mad with the hand washing (work in a school) but my mode of travel is bus and I feel better now I have some.

I don’t see how it’s a problem? Beans, soups, fruit, tinned potatoes and veg, frozen gf pizzas and chips, potato waffles, gf fish fingers, chilled curries with rice - loads of stuff?

Plantherd · 27/02/2020 11:47

Can anyone recommend a good moisturiser for hands, starting to get dry hands possibly from the hand washing? Recommendations for the whole family (young children too) thank you Smile

ofwarren · 27/02/2020 11:48

Italy
There are 528 positives, 474 under surveillance, 278 in home isolation, 159 hospitalized with symptoms and 37 in intensive care.

awesomeaircraft · 27/02/2020 11:48

@Tryingnottobesociallyawkward Hope your hands don't get too dry!

Similarly I carried and used one for me and the kids for our flights over half terms. Very good for when it is difficult to find a clean bathroom, etc.

I am not judging in case my post does come across the wrong way, I am wanting to make sure people don't overuse the products.

Spain confirms a new case of coronavirus in Barcelona; 3rd in Catalonia t.co/eUoE2b20hL

bellinisurge · 27/02/2020 11:51

Neutrogena Norwegian formula hand cream was on offer at the Boots near my work the other day. Strongly recommend with all this hand washing we must do.

NewYearNewTwatName · 27/02/2020 11:53

DC have little hand gels to take out with them. I bought a couple weeks ago, plus a few bottle of the same stuff, its 57.6% Ethanol. it was they only stuff available and I haven't seen any alcohol based hand Gel since. So I bought a few bottles of surgical spirt and add a little to the bottles. it did turn it from a clear Gel to slightly cloudy though.

There are still plenty of milton surface wipes in the shops near us. probably because they are in different isle from other antibac wipes.

I just started keeping a pack of them in the car now for when I get home, wipe my hands, steering wheel gear stick, inside handle ect.. then outside house door handle and my keys.

AmelieTaylor · 27/02/2020 11:55

@HuntedUp

But then I do start worrying that I might be missing something - for example a trip to hospital

Yes, I think situations like that need to be allowed for. More for if one of you had another illness requiring hospitalisation etc

B&Q, screw fix etc are still getting them in, they’re just selling out quickly. Screw fix have now put a limit per sale on them as (apparently) some selfish twats were buying out their entire stock (nationwide) and selling them at hugely marked up prices on line. It’s also why they’re not doing delivery of them anymore collecting 5 at a time in person, is slowing the people trying to profit from this down a bit.

Screw fix prices seem about what they were pre this, So hopefully you can pick up a couple of disposable ones in case of situations where they’re compulsory or you’d just feel better (if you had to) go out.

TankGirl97 · 27/02/2020 11:56

I'm really pleased to have the updates here too @ofwarren.

My local Superdrug had loads of large bottles of antibac yesterday. Couldn't find small bottles anywhere in town though.

I have an important question re cheese Grin. Do you lot freeze blocks of cheese or should I freeze it grated?

Calmonthesurfacebut · 27/02/2020 12:00

Re Coeliac. Wev’e been living with it for over 7 years now so do actually know most of things that are GF! 😂

Sadly IceWings a lot of tinned soups are not gluten free, often have barley in them and of course wheat flour is used as a thickener. Gluten turns up in the most unlikely of things, take chocolate for example, some brands are a complete no, as with some makes of crisps. I did buy a load of GF bread this morning for the freezer £3.00 a loaf - crazy.

Yes of course fruit, veg, rice is GF, I’m talking about the easy ready mades although Aldi do a great cottage pie and tempura chicken. Got some GF pizzas too, again £3.00!

Looks like I’m doing a bit of batch cooking.

awesomeaircraft · 27/02/2020 12:00

@TankGirl97 I freeze blocks, but it I could see an advantage of freezing greater too. It takes a while to defrost a block and it is super crumbly afterwards (if we are talking Cheddar).

NewYearNewTwatName · 27/02/2020 12:00

We tested frozen cheese last year. the blocks go crumbly, which I didn't mind but DH and DC disliked. So I've got mixture of grated and solid in the freezer now.

fuck um I'll eat if they won't and if it comes to the only cheese we have to eat I'm sure they'll get over its appearance Grin

I think one of the 2 announced today went to a London hospital @londonhospital
Could it be that case?
