Prepping for a pandemic...6

6th thread on prepping for a pandemic and following the risk of a COVID pandemic.

Anxiety

As Preppers we tend to look at a reasonable worst case scenario to plan for. Everyone is welcome on the thread but if you find it makes you anxious be kind to yourself and think about sticking to once daily updates from the BBC or similar Thanks

General COVID Info

The estimated replication rate is R= 2 to 4 based on latest expert estimates. This means each infected person spreads the virus to between 2 and 4 people. Experts estimate that, unchecked, it could infect 60% of the population.

Around 15-20% of cases are thought to be severe - that is resulting in the need for hospitalisation. Around 3-5% requiring ventilation.

The estimated mortality rate is around 1-2% at the moment (compared to 0.01-0.1% for flu). This may change as it is very difficult to estimate mortality.

Children tend to have milder symptoms. Those over 60 with underlying health issues and a history of smoking are more likely to be severe (although not exclusively this type of person).

Spread of COVID

It is estimated that the average incubation period is 3-5 days but can be as long as 24 days.

It can be spread with no symptoms.

It can be spread via droplet (cough/sneeze), aerosol (breathing same air in very close quarters), bodily fluids, fecal/oral route and formites (via surfaces, up to 28 days in the right circumstances but up to 3-5 days in more typical circumstances).

Updates

As this is a novel virus and knowledge is constantly being updated - I will post updates as they become available with links to source.

I am not a medical expert so any opinions or conjecture of my own should be taken with a pinch of salt!

Prepping Scenarios

Most of us are prepping for the following situations:

  • Wanting to stay indoors for 2-4 weeks + in case of a local outbreak / schools being closed
  • Potentially being ill with a flu type illness lasting 2-3 weeks with one or more of the household having the illness
  • Having to take a family member to hospital for COVID or any other reason during an outbreak

Prepping Items

Threads 1&2 have lists of things to think about to prep for the first scenario as do the Brexit prepping threads.

Main differences/additions to something like the Brexit list are:

  • Face masks if you can get them for any trips you have to make in public during an outbreak. These don't offer full protection and cannot be 100% relied upon but are probably better than nothing if you make sure you wear them correctly and dispose of them correctly. N95 masks are best but expensive and harder to wear, surgical face masks are second best. Dust masks are not going to help.
  • Hand sanitiser needs to be 60% or more alcohol content
  • Dettol / bleach / Miltons to disinfect. Not all disinfectants work but these three do
  • Plenty of at home/over counter treatments for flu type symptoms should you need to treat at home
  • Tissues (lots of) should you catch the virus
  • Think about meals that are easy to cook and eat should you be ill or both parents be ill at the same time (soup for example)
  • For a potential hospital trip you may want to prep a 'go bag' should you need to take someone to hospital with the virus (or anything else) during an outbreak. See Thread 1&2 for examples of what people are packing
  • Frequent and thorough hand washing, not touching your face and social distancing (no handshakes, hugs, etc) are some of the most effective ways to stay virus free

Other Thoughts

India have announced that they are stopping exports of some antibiotics, hormone treatments and vitamin supplements as they rely on China for raw materials.

Many factories that supplied fibre for use in sanitary towels and tampons are being diverted to manufacture face masks. Consider stocking up or changing to sustainable items (cloth STs, mooncup, period pants)

I'm also a teacher - if anyone wants to PM re: what we are doing then feel free. We are following that DfE guidance doc basically and trying not to invent our own rules. Re: hand gel, number 1) no guarantee school will get a supply if it turns into the same situation as with the face masks and 2) proper hand washing with soap (no shortage!) is better if kiddies instructed how to do it thoroughly of course!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 26/02/2020 17:11

ok, I seem to have caused a fair bit of upset and for that, I'm sorry. I think the best thing OfWarren is for you to follow the majority, and if I don't like that, then I'll just have to lump it.

EliK · 26/02/2020 17:12

I'm starting to gain back a bit of faith in UK healthcare. We've done a lot of tests compared to other countries. I'm in for a shock if it does hit the fan, I'm feeling optimistic today.
When I was in Primark looking for hand gel I overheard someone shopping for holiday clothes.... if I had an upcoming holiday I wouldn't be going. I have one booked for June and I'm already considering not going.

FelicityFebruary · 26/02/2020 17:15

Pegase thank you.
Its good to remember that hand washing is preferable to hand sanitizer!

FelicityFebruary · 26/02/2020 17:21

The testing v positives has been The good news story thus far in the UK.
Long may it last.

@MasterOfCaffeine, I’m basically thinking in terms of two weeks isolation, either because we’re ill or because there’s widespread illness in the area, in which case leaving the house as little as possible is best. I think assuming online deliveries will be operating as usual is foolish. I’m also thinking about potential shortages in shops as supply chains get disrupted. So no water or power outage stocks really.

But: keeping milk/bread topped up regularly.
Having a decent stock of meat/meal makers in the freezer.
Having plenty of tinned fruit and veg for when the fresh stuff runs out, as well as pulses, rice, noodles etc. Things we would eat anyway but keeping well stocked. Also a couple of cartons of UHT milk and a tub of milk powder (can be used to make yoghurt if never needed).
Loo roll, washing powder, basic meds all topped up.

I’ll continue to do weekly shops on top of this while everything is fine but it gives me great comfort to know if there’s a knock on the door right now we could stay here for two weeks and live quite well.

Dennisreynoldsduster · 26/02/2020 17:21

Someone tie my hands together, I keep eating the dark chocolate out of my stash 🙄

Question, DH and I were planning a UK weekend away next month with DS - would you still do it?
I had been thinking about trying to stay away from people but tbh the more I think about it the more impossible it is to protect ourselves completely from getting it - DH commuting, people bringing deliveries, visitors, doctors appointments for DS etc - so I’m inclined to go for it. Being quarantined in a UK hotel seems less scary than it happening abroad... although I wouldn’t have access to my beloved stash!

FelicityFebruary · 26/02/2020 17:26

Oh I can't keep treats Dennis. I have no doubt there will be plenty of biscuits, chocolate or cake I like left in the shops. Because I like em all apart from bourbons and garibaldis! If I can't get out and am well enough to eat cake then I'm well enough to bake one.

If the electricity were ever cut off I would still have the dried fruit! Sorted.

EliK · 26/02/2020 17:27

I think I would still go on a UK holiday unless anything changes before then. Maybe bring some essentials from your stash Grin you never know!

GorkyMcPorky · 26/02/2020 17:28

My school (secondary) and my DCs' have yet to say anything at all about the virus.

MotherOfDragonite · 26/02/2020 17:32

I really appreciated the updates, @ofwarren. It helps with prepping as it gives a sense of how urgent it could get and keeps me up to date with what's going on. I don't like following the general thread in AIBU as it isn't as polite and practical!

Legoandloldolls · 26/02/2020 17:46

My grab bag. There is no clothes there. Its just a backpack. I have two at least of everything on my list, two power banks, three headphones, two USB plugs, four charge leads etc. If we needed to use it I would split it across however many bags then add clothes ( and decant from my lovely cath kidston bag as I dont want it to get dirty)

Just to show that my list fits two, three times over in a back pack.

Of course if I was ill and needed icu then I dont need worry about anything as I wont care beyond being pumped full of painkillers ( lots of prep there two after 4 births "wheres my epidural? How many people before me? Is he in surgery still? No I dont think I want to walk about before my epidural? When is it coming? Two births with no pain killers and two with epidurals, been there, done no drugs, no thank you! I might order up a tshirt "wheres my morphine?" ) 🤣

Mum2jenny · 26/02/2020 17:48

Love your updates ofwarren too

Legoandloldolls · 26/02/2020 17:48

I could get more in if I removed packaging. I'm presuming I will never need this bag but I feel better knowing it's there and ready

VenetoResident · 26/02/2020 17:51

Just to let everyone know that DS2 tested negative.

We got the results today. He's still unwell but a little better I think. The doctor that tested him is now off work with symptoms. 😰

I hope everyone's preparations are going well. Sorry, had to move away from the thread as it's all a bit close to home!

Pppppickupapenguin · 26/02/2020 17:52

This made me laugh just now

ofwarren · 26/02/2020 17:56

I'm going to delete the BREAKING header cos that's easy. So here we go:
3rd case of #coronavirus in #Croatia

Potterurotter · 26/02/2020 17:58

Hi all my colleagues think I’m nuts for taking this seriously, I work in adult social care and just can’t believe there is zero discussion around this and the possible impact on staff but also the delivery of the service which is mainly the elderly population. Does anyone else work for a local authority and is there any smoke about contingency planning? :S

ofwarren · 26/02/2020 17:59

Germany's health minister says the country is at the start of an epidemic, urges local officials to prepare for a pandemic

ofwarren · 26/02/2020 18:04

Sweden reports 1 new case of coronavirus, country's second case t.co/eUoE2b20hL

Dennisreynoldsduster · 26/02/2020 18:04

Lovely to hear from you @VenetoResident
Glad DS is clear
Hope you’re feeling ok

YoursTunbridgeWells · 26/02/2020 18:07

@VenetoResident Thinking of you all still. Must be hideous. I too would take a break and just focus on family right now and move away from anything that doesn't positively impact your life.

I would hope the doctor who tested your DS was masked, gowned and gloved on the basis that your DS may have been ill and therefore your DS was also protected from him x

CrapTVAddict · 26/02/2020 18:08

Are there cases in Germany then?

discoballz · 26/02/2020 18:09

NC'ed but long term lurker. DH (doctor) is seriously worried about this, has given stern warnings to the teenage DC about handwashing etc. Apparently the virologists in the know are predicting that millions in the UK will be affected by end March. Not all seriously of course, but they are predicting a fatality rate of 1-4%.

Boglins · 26/02/2020 18:09

I have been lurking for a while and reading both this and the worried thread and would like to say thank you to mojo and ofwarren and everyone else who has taken time to update and advise.

I now have a fairly healthy stash which may come into use sooner than anticipated since my youngest's class is getting 2 new children tomorrow, from Italy Shock. Obviously have no idea which area they are from but given the number of Italy-related cases popping up all over Europe I'm going to keep a close eye on the health of my kids. I'm also going to take over the school run from my parents as my dad is over 80 and they're going away next week, don't want them to end up in a Diamond Princess/Tenerife situation!! Even DH has stopped rolling his eyes at me today and has volunteered to pick up extra groceries.

I can't get hold of any masks now though and am kicking myself for not ordering sooner. DH unearthed some from the shed but they don't have any rating and will probably be as much use as kitchen roll. We'll just have to manage without I guess!
