Prepping for a pandemic...6

6th thread on prepping for a pandemic and following the risk of a COVID pandemic.

Anxiety

As Preppers we tend to look at a reasonable worst case scenario to plan for. Everyone is welcome on the thread but if you find it makes you anxious be kind to yourself and think about sticking to once daily updates from the BBC or similar Thanks

General COVID Info

The estimated replication rate is R= 2 to 4 based on latest expert estimates. This means each infected person spreads the virus to between 2 and 4 people. Experts estimate that, unchecked, it could infect 60% of the population.

Around 15-20% of cases are thought to be severe - that is resulting in the need for hospitalisation. Around 3-5% requiring ventilation.

The estimated mortality rate is around 1-2% at the moment (compared to 0.01-0.1% for flu). This may change as it is very difficult to estimate mortality.

Children tend to have milder symptoms. Those over 60 with underlying health issues and a history of smoking are more likely to be severe (although not exclusively this type of person).

Spread of COVID

It is estimated that the average incubation period is 3-5 days but can be as long as 24 days.

It can be spread with no symptoms.

It can be spread via droplet (cough/sneeze), aerosol (breathing same air in very close quarters), bodily fluids, fecal/oral route and formites (via surfaces, up to 28 days in the right circumstances but up to 3-5 days in more typical circumstances).

Updates

As this is a novel virus and knowledge is constantly being updated - I will post updates as they become available with links to source.

I am not a medical expert so any opinions or conjecture of my own should be taken with a pinch of salt!

Prepping Scenarios

Most of us are prepping for the following situations:

  • Wanting to stay indoors for 2-4 weeks + in case of a local outbreak / schools being closed
  • Potentially being ill with a flu type illness lasting 2-3 weeks with one or more of the household having the illness
  • Having to take a family member to hospital for COVID or any other reason during an outbreak

Prepping Items

Threads 1&2 have lists of things to think about to prep for the first scenario as do the Brexit prepping threads.

Main differences/additions to something like the Brexit list are:

  • Face masks if you can get them for any trips you have to make in public during an outbreak. These don't offer full protection and cannot be 100% relied upon but are probably better than nothing if you make sure you wear them correctly and dispose of them correctly. N95 masks are best but expensive and harder to wear, surgical face masks are second best. Dust masks are not going to help.
  • Hand sanitiser needs to be 60% or more alcohol content
  • Dettol / bleach / Miltons to disinfect. Not all disinfectants work but these three do
  • Plenty of at home/over counter treatments for flu type symptoms should you need to treat at home
  • Tissues (lots of) should you catch the virus
  • Think about meals that are easy to cook and eat should you be ill or both parents be ill at the same time (soup for example)
  • For a potential hospital trip you may want to prep a 'go bag' should you need to take someone to hospital with the virus (or anything else) during an outbreak. See Thread 1&2 for examples of what people are packing
  • Frequent and thorough hand washing, not touching your face and social distancing (no handshakes, hugs, etc) are some of the most effective ways to stay virus free

Other Thoughts

India have announced that they are stopping exports of some antibiotics, hormone treatments and vitamin supplements as they rely on China for raw materials.

Many factories that supplied fibre for use in sanitary towels and tampons are being diverted to manufacture face masks. Consider stocking up or changing to sustainable items (cloth STs, mooncup, period pants)

I’m missing the updates! It was just really useful to have them as part of the thread as well as the general chat and prepping.

ofwarren · 26/02/2020 16:23

fairylights my son has his own hand gel but he has medical issues. The school has also put in their own hand gel dispensers.
Ask the school what things they are doing to increase hand hygiene.

Gammeldragz · 26/02/2020 16:25

Vaccumed and mopped through the house, as a start to my clean base prepping. I didn't get around to (ok, spent the morning in bed with DH as we had rare empty house time and who knows when we'll get that again!) sorting the prepping supplies so that will be tomorrow's job and then Friday I'm at work but popping to Tesco at lunchtime to add missing stocks.

18 jacket potatoes in the oven (5 for dinner, the rest to freeze) as I saw that mentioned and realised we are very lacking in potato products (Lidl had no tinned ones!).
Ordered 36 cartons of wet cat food last night and just ordered 6 packs of the coils for my e cigarette (have a litre of e liquid as we buy in bulk) as I would not like to be without that!
Definitely still need more loo rolls as only have about 50.
Not sure how the condom supplies are looking (as PP mentioned KY jelly!) so may order more (Amazon).

Have had to bin two pairs of socks this week and realised I don't have enough of those or knickers to add spares to my grab bag (which I have yet to put together!) so I think I'll order some of those too.

Surprised no new cases tested positive here yet, what with people returning from Italy etc over half term.

ofwarren · 26/02/2020 16:25

New case in Pakistan

Gammeldragz · 26/02/2020 16:26

@Fairylights2021 probably concerned about small ones drinking 70% alcohol! I didn't even consider that when I sent DD in with some today.

Fairylights2021 · 26/02/2020 16:26

Thanks that’s useful to know. I’ll ask what they are doing. Just asked my daughter if they are washing their hands before snack time and they aren’t. Definitely need to raise it with school.

EliK · 26/02/2020 16:29

I still have hope that there won't be a large outbreak in the UK, just small clusters that can be contained. Would help if all non-essential travel was restricted. But I'm preparing for the worst.

Skyejuly · 26/02/2020 16:30

Been in town today. BM bargains was empty. Loads of dried food and tins. Loads of sanitizer and stock levels seemed normal. Again, sainsburys seemed as standard. No empty shelves or anyone with piled trolleys.
I went around doing my usual supply shop and hoping no one looks at my trolley!

Also been to the range and home bargains. Got noodles in poundland too.
We will use these when camping if they do t get used beforehand.

Though now I feel really poorly. Whilst I know I dont have CV...it makes you realise how easily things spread. I felt fine this morn..

ofwarren · 26/02/2020 16:30

There are guidelines for schools online that tells them when kids have to be washing their hands. I'm travelling at the moment so can't find it. Someone else might be able to.

Legoandloldolls · 26/02/2020 16:31

webuiltthis city I'm thinking my bag is for going with someone who needs care or driving to my mums. If I'm ill with covid19 I'm deodorant and dry shampoo person only. No way on earth I would share a shower with no one. Bad enough on maternity ward! On that note - flip flops not slippers ....... never go in hospital ward bathroom with bare feet even the shower 🤢 I'm thinking mixed isolation wards so also sleeping fully clothed. I guess theres a few places you go, a NHS hospital bed seems unlikely. Just thinking what I needed and didnt have to hand when dh was rushed to London after a major trauma. You cant plug in anything on resus, but your thumbs still work ok Grin

EliK · 26/02/2020 16:31

@Fairylights2021 also no handwashing before snack/lunch at my son's school. He said they used to do it and stopped! I'm going to say something.

Skyejuly · 26/02/2020 16:32

Oh blimey. I sent mine off with hand gel too and was miffed the teacher said she cant have it. Maybe they need to supply some to each class then.

awesomeaircraft · 26/02/2020 16:34

@Legoandloldolls thanks for the grab bag info.

FourTeaFallOut · 26/02/2020 16:38

That hand get is super slippy... I imagine easy wipe clean floors + spilled hand gel + kids running in corridors is a fun combo.

FelicityFebruary · 26/02/2020 16:39

It's a good time to ask about hand hygiene.

ifonly4 · 26/02/2020 16:39

www.gov.uk/government/publications/guidance-to-educational-settings-about-covid-19/guidance-to-educational-settings-about-covid-19

Is this the link? The only thing that's on our school's website is about self isolation if you've got symptons and have been to certain countries. I work at the school and have had no guidance whatsoever!

ofwarren · 26/02/2020 16:44

I think that's the one yes. Is it saying about washing hands after play time etc?

ofwarren · 26/02/2020 16:44

A case in Macedonia

ofwarren · 26/02/2020 16:46

Parents and teachers, @PHE_uk has updated guidance to help education settings respond to #COVID19 See more here: t.co/JPM6W1CAmE #coronavirus

FelicityFebruary · 26/02/2020 16:46

I was on public transport four times yesterday and with that and other stuff I was doing I cleaned my hands too much and today have sore skin. The need for hand cream is duly noted!

I was shopping briefly earlier today and everything is in normal supply and shops were quiet as you would expect.

Plantherd · 26/02/2020 16:48

I saw about hand wash after playtime. Son has just informed me they don't do that as teacher has said there isn't enough time/lesson has started! So he wasn't allowed to today even though he said they were quite muddy from playing with a ball..

AlohaMolly · 26/02/2020 16:51

We got this as an attachment in an email from school today and we are rural north wales.

Just a thought for people with little children - when DS has been poorly, sometimes the only things that don’t hurt have been ice lollies, so I took to making my own. We have a juicer so I’ll make up a batch with whatever fruit/veg we have and put them in lolly moulds. Popular ones have been Apple, cucumber and spinach and orange with red pepper.

EliK I know what you mean about non essential travel but it comes back to the economics..it makes me angry if I dwell on it tbh.
I think that's why personally I also found the urgent updates irritating as I see them as inevitable. God but I'm a cheerful bastard at times! Of course there is a chance this will fizzle out.

There is a thread about emotional prepping but it read as far too gentle and kind for me.

Neome · 26/02/2020 17:01

Just watched the latest research review by Dr John Campbell. In the comments someone asked him to tell them they were not crazy, as their friends were saying, for stocking up with food and water. He replied “you are not crazy”

Another commenter wrote

You're just full of good news aren't ya!!!
And he replied
Sorry about that

Which made me tear up a bit. A good nurse who knows how to give bad news.

FelicityFebruary · 26/02/2020 17:05

Neome your posts on the emotional prepping were lovely by the way. Thank you. I just am not able to participate in the same vein.
