Prepping for a pandemic...6

wheresmymojo · 24/02/2020 16:00

6th thread on prepping for a pandemic and following the risk of a COVID pandemic.

Anxiety

As Preppers we tend to look at a reasonable worst case scenario to plan for. Everyone is welcome on the thread but if you find it makes you anxious be kind to yourself and think about sticking to once daily updates from the BBC or similar Thanks

General COVID Info

The estimated replication rate is R= 2 to 4 based on latest expert estimates. This means each infected person spreads the virus to between 2 and 4 people. Experts estimate that, unchecked, it could infect 60% of the population.

Around 15-20% of cases are thought to be severe - that is resulting in the need for hospitalisation. Around 3-5% requiring ventilation.

The estimated mortality rate is around 1-2% at the moment (compared to 0.01-0.1% for flu). This may change as it is very difficult to estimate mortality.

Children tend to have milder symptoms. Those over 60 with underlying health issues and a history of smoking are more likely to be severe (although not exclusively this type of person).

Spread of COVID

It is estimated that the average incubation period is 3-5 days but can be as long as 24 days.

It can be spread with no symptoms.

It can be spread via droplet (cough/sneeze), aerosol (breathing same air in very close quarters), bodily fluids, fecal/oral route and formites (via surfaces, up to 28 days in the right circumstances but up to 3-5 days in more typical circumstances).

Updates

As this is a novel virus and knowledge is constantly being updated - I will post updates as they become available with links to source.

I am not a medical expert so any opinions or conjecture of my own should be taken with a pinch of salt!

Prepping Scenarios

Most of us are prepping for the following situations:

  • Wanting to stay indoors for 2-4 weeks + in case of a local outbreak / schools being closed
  • Potentially being ill with a flu type illness lasting 2-3 weeks with one or more of the household having the illness
  • Having to take a family member to hospital for COVID or any other reason during an outbreak

Prepping Items

Threads 1&2 have lists of things to think about to prep for the first scenario as do the Brexit prepping threads.

Main differences/additions to something like the Brexit list are:

  • Face masks if you can get them for any trips you have to make in public during an outbreak. These don't offer full protection and cannot be 100% relied upon but are probably better than nothing if you make sure you wear them correctly and dispose of them correctly. N95 masks are best but expensive and harder to wear, surgical face masks are second best. Dust masks are not going to help.
  • Hand sanitiser needs to be 60% or more alcohol content
  • Dettol / bleach / Miltons to disinfect. Not all disinfectants work but these three do
  • Plenty of at home/over counter treatments for flu type symptoms should you need to treat at home
  • Tissues (lots of) should you catch the virus
  • Think about meals that are easy to cook and eat should you be ill or both parents be ill at the same time (soup for example)
  • For a potential hospital trip you may want to prep a 'go bag' should you need to take someone to hospital with the virus (or anything else) during an outbreak. See Thread 1&2 for examples of what people are packing
  • Frequent and thorough hand washing, not touching your face and social distancing (no handshakes, hugs, etc) are some of the most effective ways to stay virus free

Other Thoughts

India have announced that they are stopping exports of some antibiotics, hormone treatments and vitamin supplements as they rely on China for raw materials.

Many factories that supplied fibre for use in sanitary towels and tampons are being diverted to manufacture face masks. Consider stocking up or changing to sustainable items (cloth STs, mooncup, period pants)

I'm totally happy to put them on here too. It's not much extra work. I don't know how best to resolve the issue of those not wanting it though.
Any ideas?
Sorry, I'm just in college and not updating much anyway. I finish at 4

Cora1942 · 26/02/2020 14:12

My posts are not being posted !

Destinysdaughter · 26/02/2020 14:13

So after much prevaricating I have cancelled the holiday to Ibiza mid May. It was seeing that hotel in Tenerife in lockdown that did it. I've only lost £60 deposit and decided it was worth it for peace of mind. The poor woman I spoke to on the phone seemed to have been getting a lot of calls from worried customers!

Cora1942 · 26/02/2020 14:17

PHE
Advice that is one family member is self isolating other family members can go to work, school etc.
The family member stays in one room, uses loo and bathroom last and uses own towels. Didnt mention them eating or washing clothes.
This wont work. Wont happen and wont stop spread of virus.

eeeyoresmiles · 26/02/2020 14:22

I would be inclined to agree with some others who have said it's the 'BREAKING' and 'URGENT' labels that I'm not keen on, rather than the updates themselves. I like those and really appreciate your efforts ofwarren.

What about sticking to excluding the labels and if that increases the work too much, balance it out by only doing it on one thread. I also think it's possible some people will be reading through this thread from pages back looking specifically for prepping advice (people who've come to it later) - that's much less likely to be happening on the AIBU thread, so maybe that's the thread that's best for 'live updates' that will be less relevant 24 hours later (unlike the prepping advice).

Still hoping MNHQ will create a topic...

bellinisurge · 26/02/2020 14:26

Quite how a child is supposed to cope on their own self isolation while parents are at work isn't explained.

EliK · 26/02/2020 14:34

Loads of hand gel in my local Primark. 75% ethanol. It's at the tills, couldn't find it elsewhere in the shop. Also picked up toothbrush covers.

UtterlyPerfectCartoonGiraffe · 26/02/2020 14:37

@Ricefish I had a similar wobble as I just got a parcel from Japan, that came from Tokyo. Its route was Tokyo, Hong Kong, Germany and East Midlands. That took 7 days, so anything inside the packaging would be dead. The packaging itself is probably ok as the 28 days in ideal circumstances probably doesn’t include being flung in and out of warehouses and planes and dragged around in the rain Smile I did wash my hands after opening though just in case!

I don’t think there have been any cases of the virus being caught that way too, which is reassuring.

Tropicalsquirrel · 26/02/2020 14:39

Another vote for keeping the updates. I’ve found this whole set of threads very useful, specifically because of the mix of prepping advice and updates on the virus. Very much appreciate all the work going into the threads as well.

Twixes · 26/02/2020 14:41

@PurpleCalm good tip, I'll do that. I was planning on putting them into individual bags but that's v wasteful

RedLentilYellowLentil · 26/02/2020 14:42

it's the 'BREAKING' and 'URGENT' labels

Good point @eeeyoresmiles. Stripping those out, if @ofwarren doesn't mind, would be a good compromise imo. Though it's not me who's having difficulty with them so perhaps it's not for me to say...

Neome · 26/02/2020 14:45

Hi all, just wondering, Ofwarren if you could put your updates some think like this

twitter update basic info link

ie italics so we can easily skip or find depending on preference

Many thanks to all and good luck🐪

VivaLeBeaver · 26/02/2020 14:50

I like the updates. I am a bit anxious about it all but I figure being informed makes me feel slightly better.

NebbiaZanzare · 26/02/2020 14:51

There is a child in Veneto testing positive. But it's a little girl and she's the grandchild of the first victim.

I'm not feeling well and have a cough ( not exactly unusual for a teacher in Feb, so probably one of the bog standard local lurgies rather than our newsworthy newly arrived lurgy) so I'm leaving a link to local news from her region in case I take to bed for a while.

corrieredelveneto.corriere.it/

Keeping my fingers crossed for her and her family. Have to say being in the Yellow Zone of Doom and now coughing ... I have a small glimpse of how much extra stress she's been lugging around for some time.

If it helps, for all that people in your real world might take the piss or call you hysterical for prepping, right now in the middle of it I'm so really very glad that I don't have to add worrying about food & meds to the worries I have to get on and deal with, like it or lump it.

CrapTVAddict · 26/02/2020 14:52

Why would anyone have a problem with ' breaking or urgent in a post?' Confused
People can scroll on if dont want to read or not interested in updates

shouldhavecalleditoatabix · 26/02/2020 14:52

FWIW I too was really finding all the updates useful. I can't follow twitter because it makes me very anxious and the AIBU also gets me because there are too many 'it's just a cold or flu' comments. The URGENT and BREAKING NEWS stuff did admittedly cause a little jump in heart rate so perhaps they could be left off but I really would like posters to update on here. It totally helps with prepping because I bet a lot of us are trying to calculate when to pick up those last few bits and this helps me keep an eye on that too.

QueSera · 26/02/2020 14:55

Personally I liked the 'breaking'/'urgent' labels - to me those are great for making the updates stand out so that people can easily skip or find, depending on preference.

StuffedBird · 26/02/2020 14:56

I am not prepping anything for the freezer. I am expecting power cuts so food will just go off (I remember them well from the 70s and 80s) so I am just getting tinned and dry items, plus candles and matches, got loads of bottles of water too.

miffmufferedmoof · 26/02/2020 14:59

I’m reading both threads so I’d prefer updates were just on the AIBU one (it is a nice, sensible thread like this one, just not focused on prepping) rather than being duplicated.

I don’t mind the hashtags but do find the words in caps seem to give me a little cortisol spike

Snowdropdelight · 26/02/2020 15:00

Of Warren are yiu sure lots said not, can we have a democratic vote!!

Twixes · 26/02/2020 15:02

I like the BREAKING ones as they're easy to identify if you're scrolling quickly through a page.

As someone else said, you can't please everyone all of the time!

Twixes · 26/02/2020 15:02

I vote for a vote.

Plantherd · 26/02/2020 15:06

I liked the updates and block captials on this thread too. A mix of prepping and keeping updates, thank you for the time to keep us updated @ofwarren

OfftoPenscome · 26/02/2020 15:09

Just back from my prepping shopping trip. Saw a lady there with a full blown top of the range market mask - first I have seen wearing a mask in this rural part of Europe (nearest case is 3 hours drive away).

They were nearly out of hand gel and dettol hand soap/wash. Just a couple of each left.

They actually had bleach and disinfectants on promotion. I appreciated that they had not bumped the price up by were offering a deal instead. Let’s see if they still do that if it reaches us.

I now have my freezer nearly full and a pile of veg to cut up and freeze tonight. Have also frozen some milk and bread.

Never realized how much long life milk products there were. Got ds some mars one as a treat but will hide them and only break them out with my wine if We have to isolate.

Feeling better prepared and that takes away some of the worry of How we would manage as I am a single parent.

Pinkfizzy · 26/02/2020 15:16

I'm afraid that the # & BREAKING give me an unwelcome shot of adrenaline too. I don't mind popping across to AIBU once a day but she sheer number of updates causes the no. of posts to increase significantly & my heart to sink...

As has previously been said, prepping is about being calmly prepared. The nature of the updates is the opposite - panics me.

Sorry @ofwarren; hugely appreciative of your work, but would prefer it on another thread.
