Prepping for a pandemic...6

wheresmymojo · 24/02/2020 16:00

6th thread on prepping for a pandemic and following the risk of a COVID pandemic.

Anxiety

As Preppers we tend to look at a reasonable worst case scenario to plan for. Everyone is welcome on the thread but if you find it makes you anxious be kind to yourself and think about sticking to once daily updates from the BBC or similar Thanks

General COVID Info

The estimated replication rate is R= 2 to 4 based on latest expert estimates. This means each infected person spreads the virus to between 2 and 4 people. Experts estimate that, unchecked, it could infect 60% of the population.

Around 15-20% of cases are thought to be severe - that is resulting in the need for hospitalisation. Around 3-5% requiring ventilation.

The estimated mortality rate is around 1-2% at the moment (compared to 0.01-0.1% for flu). This may change as it is very difficult to estimate mortality.

Children tend to have milder symptoms. Those over 60 with underlying health issues and a history of smoking are more likely to be severe (although not exclusively this type of person).

Spread of COVID

It is estimated that the average incubation period is 3-5 days but can be as long as 24 days.

It can be spread with no symptoms.

It can be spread via droplet (cough/sneeze), aerosol (breathing same air in very close quarters), bodily fluids, fecal/oral route and formites (via surfaces, up to 28 days in the right circumstances but up to 3-5 days in more typical circumstances).

Updates

As this is a novel virus and knowledge is constantly being updated - I will post updates as they become available with links to source.

I am not a medical expert so any opinions or conjecture of my own should be taken with a pinch of salt!

Prepping Scenarios

Most of us are prepping for the following situations:

  • Wanting to stay indoors for 2-4 weeks + in case of a local outbreak / schools being closed
  • Potentially being ill with a flu type illness lasting 2-3 weeks with one or more of the household having the illness
  • Having to take a family member to hospital for COVID or any other reason during an outbreak

Prepping Items

Threads 1&2 have lists of things to think about to prep for the first scenario as do the Brexit prepping threads.

Main differences/additions to something like the Brexit list are:

  • Face masks if you can get them for any trips you have to make in public during an outbreak. These don't offer full protection and cannot be 100% relied upon but are probably better than nothing if you make sure you wear them correctly and dispose of them correctly. N95 masks are best but expensive and harder to wear, surgical face masks are second best. Dust masks are not going to help.
  • Hand sanitiser needs to be 60% or more alcohol content
  • Dettol / bleach / Miltons to disinfect. Not all disinfectants work but these three do
  • Plenty of at home/over counter treatments for flu type symptoms should you need to treat at home
  • Tissues (lots of) should you catch the virus
  • Think about meals that are easy to cook and eat should you be ill or both parents be ill at the same time (soup for example)
  • For a potential hospital trip you may want to prep a 'go bag' should you need to take someone to hospital with the virus (or anything else) during an outbreak. See Thread 1&2 for examples of what people are packing
  • Frequent and thorough hand washing, not touching your face and social distancing (no handshakes, hugs, etc) are some of the most effective ways to stay virus free

Other Thoughts

India have announced that they are stopping exports of some antibiotics, hormone treatments and vitamin supplements as they rely on China for raw materials.

Many factories that supplied fibre for use in sanitary towels and tampons are being diverted to manufacture face masks. Consider stocking up or changing to sustainable items (cloth STs, mooncup, period pants)

Just wondering about anti bacterial hand washes, are the tesco brand which says kills 99.9% bactieria effective or do i need to specifically be buying dettol?

nibdedibble · 26/02/2020 15:20

I really just want this to happen if it’s going to. All this waiting is getting to me. I’m totally ready to hunker down with my supplies Grin Bit premature perhaps

Notashandyta · 26/02/2020 15:31

Really miss having proper updates here. The posts were so level headed and succinct Sad

We did a final prep shop when our mega supermarket opened at 6am this morning. We are now fully stocked with chicken thighs and sausages for the freezer, bread mix, spices and a top up of UHT milk to add to everything else. We were virtually the only ones in there except the staff filling up their trolleys for online shoppers. No one in Kent that I’ve spoken to seems to be in the slightest bit concerned.

For treats I decided to buy wine rather than my favourite G&T because bottles are easier to store than separate cans of tonic, ice and gin.

Husband was in the doghouse yesterday for trying to hide his beloved freezing bowl for his ice cream maker under some chicken in the freezer drawer...

He did make me laugh in the supermarket this morning. I was choosing chocolate for the long haul and he came trotting back with some tubes of KY Jelly. He said if it was a matter of priorities...😂

Notashandyta · 26/02/2020 15:34

Are there any new uk cases?

SebandAlice · 26/02/2020 15:41

No Notashandyta but there are 51 extra cases in Italy and there will be more before the day is out.

MasterOfCaffeine · 26/02/2020 15:44

Hi all, hope you don't mind some questions from a prepping newbie! I'm planning on putting together a little 'just in case' stockpile. How much prepping do I realistically need to prepare for? 2 weeks? More? And what items might become the most difficult to get? I'll be stocking up on bottled water, baby formula and frozen veg and will also add to my tinned cupboard.

I was doing really well at ignoring all the caps locks scaremongering but have given in and indulged myself a mini panic today 🙈

GorkyMcPorky · 26/02/2020 15:45

@ofwarren has been providing updates off her own bat. She said yesterday that they're just lifted from Twitter and it's time consuming to edit them. Honestly in her position I'd have given up on us all by now and said find your own bloody updates!

I struggle to keep up with the threads, let alone finding news and updating them.

bellinisurge · 26/02/2020 15:53

Hi @MasterOfCaffeine , a sensible period of time to look at first is 2 weeks quarantine or self isolation. Let's assume no one in your house is poorly but you are stuck at home and cannot go to the shops or anything.
Think of food and drink, think of personal hygiene (toothpaste, bog roll etc) , think of treats (because it's dull) and think of entertainment .
No reason to think water and other utilities will go down.
Does that help? Focus on your home. What you like to eat etc etc.

FelicityFebruary · 26/02/2020 15:55

I don't think there is any particular issue with water.

Just buy what you use normally.

It also epends on your storage capacity. I have a small freezer so have in extra tinned, bottled, dried food as well as lol roll and cleaning stuff so I wouldn't need to shop for a couple of weeks if we were ill.

FelicityFebruary · 26/02/2020 15:56

Loo roll ! Damn autocorrect.

YoursTunbridgeWells · 26/02/2020 15:56

Hate the source but article claims we have absolutely no NHS capacity and we are in a worse place than we were in in with the swine flu www.dailymail.co.uk/health/article-8046291/Britains-hospitals-little-fuel-tank-cope-coronavirus-warn-experts.html

I remember how swine flu brought the NHS to its knees - at least it felt like that at the time and there reports of people dying due to not enough ECMO units.

Numbers compared to possible covid-19 numbers were small fry.
Having said that, I have been made aware that the UK has done some serious pandemic modelling and it may be that when that kicks in, suddenly more capacity appears in make-shift hospitals etc. But where oh where will the staff come from?

MasterOfCaffeine · 26/02/2020 15:58

Thanks Bellini 👍 We eat a lot of casserole/curry type stuff with tinned beans and lentils already so that helps I think. And I have a bread machine so should order some extra breadmaking supplies. I guess I just have to workaround not having fresh fruit or veg.

WhoKnowsWhatsAroundTheCorner · 26/02/2020 15:59

Not sure if this is prepping - and I have really appreciated the info on these threads.

My DS has been unwell all week with a virus - probably another more run of the mill virus.

He’s found Galaxy chocolate easier to eat as it just melts, and doesn’t hurt his throat.
I’ve been giving him fresh orange/ honey and boiled water in a drinks bottle to hydrate him and give him some energy. He’s been refusing paracetamol because he blames his sore throat on the meds - so I put some fast melts in too. (Whilst keeping an eye on his intake of paracetamol).

It’s been a rehearsal for the real thing and a reminder that when you’re ill, you don’t always want to eat usual foods.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 26/02/2020 16:01

In terms of hand gel - has anyone recently acquired any large bottles from a reliable source? A company that I bought some from for business use has not sent it out, despite taking payment.

The supply I have isn't going to last very long. I thought I'd prepped reasonably well, but sigh, it turns out, not enough on this end.

Notashandyta · 26/02/2020 16:02

Thanks Alice

HasaDigaEebowai · 26/02/2020 16:04

Honestly in her position I'd have given up on us all by now and said find your own bloody updates!

This. I think we should give it a rest and let people post what they want and read/not read those bits they choose.

RedLentilYellowLentil · 26/02/2020 16:06

Hope you're feeling better soon, @NebbiaZanzare. Flowers

If we are having a vote then I vote to keep them here and i like the unedited copy and pasted because it's makes the news updates stand out among the general chatter posts.

It's took me from 1pm til now to catch up on this thread and I've not got to go find the thread and scroll and find the place from the last update. I'm on my phone most of the time and you can't have multiple convos open and it's clunky having a lot open on a browser.

The threads are getting busy and filling up fast and I have a feeling they'll be filling up even quicker as more and more countries see more and more cases and sifting through two busy chats on the app is a pain in the arse but I also don't want to make people more anxious than they need be but my vote would be to keep them here.

If the majority want them posting elsewhere but others don't want to follow two busy threads then maybe a WhatsApp chat with just the updates would work?l for those who don't want to see them but be quicker for those who do? I'm happy to start a chat and copy and paste of warrens posts when I see them if she didn't want to join the chat?

The only issue I'd need people mobile phone numbers to add them to the chat so you'd need to feel ok PMing me your mobile numbers to add you.

WeBuiltCisCityOnSexistRoles · 26/02/2020 16:10

Lip balm and hand cream? Hospitals are so drying.
Deodorant
Slippers or slipper socks with grippy soles.

WeBuiltCisCityOnSexistRoles · 26/02/2020 16:11

Sorry that was @Legoandloldolls.

If you're prepping for a CV related admission I seriously doubt you'll need or be allowed half of that stuff though.

ofwarren · 26/02/2020 16:13

Right, on my way home now. I'm in college 2 days a week so updates will be lacking on those days.
As Gorky rightfully says, it's a massive chore to amend the links. I have other things to do than writing on here all the time. I can easily copy and paste though as it's 2 clicks.
Again, I'm happy to carry on doing that but I understand that lots don't like it.
A reminder again that the links are reputable. They are basically from a bot that looks at foreign news sources. I don't have time to physically dig them out but if people want the link I can find it. Some will already have the links on the ones I find manually.
If you look back through at the ones I have already posted, you will see that they are all correct. They aren't just from Joe bloggs on twitter, I'm sourcing in the same way any news agency does. The story is broken by a local agency and then picked up by MSM in the UK.

Ive no idea how to decide whether to carry on updating this post. I feel bad for those that want the updates but also don't want to see people upset at the links.
Maybe I should leave it up to the OP to decide? It's her post after all.

Fairylights2021 · 26/02/2020 16:18

Has anyone else had their children’s school tell them that children aren’t allowed to take hand gel into school? My dd is in reception and they’ve been told it’s not allowed.
