Prepping for a pandemic....5

5th thread on prepping for a pandemic and following the risk of a COVID pandemic.

Anxiety

As Preppers we tend to look at a reasonable worst case scenario to plan for. Everyone is welcome on the thread but if you find it makes you anxious be kind to yourself and think about sticking to once daily updates from the BBC or similar Thanks

General COVID Info

The estimated replication rate is R= 2 to 4 based on latest expert estimates. This means each infected person spreads the virus to between 2 and 4 people. Experts estimate that, unchecked, it could infect 60% of the population.

Around 15-20% of cases are thought to be severe - that is resulting in the need for hospitalisation. Around 3-5% requiring ventilation.

The estimated mortality rate is around 1-2% at the moment (compared to 0.01-0.1% for flu). This may change as it is very difficult to estimate mortality.

Children tend to have milder symptoms. Those over 60 with underlying health issues and a history of smoking are more likely to be severe (although not exclusively this type of person).

Spread of COVID

It is estimated that the average incubation period is 3-5 days but can be as long as 24 days.

It can be spread with no symptoms.

It can be spread via droplet (cough/sneeze), aerosol (breathing same air in very close quarters), bodily fluids, fecal/oral route and formites (via surfaces, up to 28 days in the right circumstances but up to 3-5 days in more typical circumstances).

Updates

As this is a novel virus and knowledge is constantly being updated - I will post updates as they become available with links to source.

I am not a medical expert so any opinions or conjecture of my own should be taken with a pinch of salt!

Prepping Scenarios

Most of us are prepping for the following situations:

  • Wanting to stay indoors for 2-4 weeks + in case of a local outbreak / schools being closed
  • Potentially being ill with a flu type illness lasting 2-3 weeks with one or more of the household having the illness
  • Having to take a family member to hospital for COVID or any other reason during an outbreak

Prepping Items

Threads 1&2 have lists of things to think about to prep for the first scenario as do the Brexit prepping threads.

Main differences/additions to something like the Brexit list are:

  • Face masks if you can get them for any trips you have to make in public during an outbreak. These don't offer full protection and cannot be 100% relied upon but are probably better than nothing if you make sure you wear them correctly and dispose of them correctly. N95 masks are best but expensive and harder to wear, surgical face masks are second best. Dust masks are not going to help.
  • Hand sanitiser needs to be 60% or more alcohol content
  • Dettol / bleach / Miltons to disinfect. Not all disinfectants work but these three do
  • Plenty of at home/over counter treatments for flu type symptoms should you need to treat at home
  • Tissues (lots of) should you catch the virus
  • Think about meals that are easy to cook and eat should you be ill or both parents be ill at the same time (soup for example)
  • For a potential hospital trip you may want to prep a 'go bag' should you need to take someone to hospital with the virus (or anything else) during an outbreak. See Thread 1&2 for examples of what people are packing
  • Frequent and thorough hand washing, not touching your face and social distancing (no handshakes, hugs, etc) are some of the most effective ways to stay virus free

Other Thoughts

India have announced that they are stopping exports of some antibiotics, hormone treatments and vitamin supplements as they rely on China for raw materials.

Many factories that supplied fibre for use in sanitary towels and tampons are being diverted to manufacture face masks. Consider stocking up or changing to sustainable items (cloth STs, mooncup, period pants)

Having been told you can't freeze yoghurt and trying it anyway, I can report that you really can't freeze yoghurt Grin

The Ukraine incident is horrible. It just shows how quickly things can escalate if rumours are allowed to run around unchecked.

It’s that sort of thing, plus quarantine/food rationing in China etc; that’s actually more concerning to me than contracting the illness itself.

Awful to hear of schools where soap isn’t even provided Shock

HasaDigaEebowai · 21/02/2020 08:51

With all due respect nobody needs canned bread. Get some shrink wrapped wraps and some crackers if you can't make bread. Or make flat breads/tortillas, they're very simple.

Cheese can just be slung in the freezer. No special treatment required. My freezer has cheddar, red leicester, stilton, halloumi, feta, camembert parmesan, pecorino and mozarella. The only cheese that doesn't freeze very well IME is soft philadelphia type cheese which can sometimes split when it defrosts.

wherearemychickens · 21/02/2020 08:51

It's really going to highlight which countries trust their governments and which don't I think.

HasaDigaEebowai · 21/02/2020 08:52

You can freeze yoghurt but you have to then eat it as frozen yoghurt. The plastic tubes are really handy for this (although clearly an environmental abomination)

https://vdata.nikkei.com/en/newsgraphics/coronavirus-world-map/

I'm not sure how accurate this map is, but I've been checking it everyday. The virus doesn't seem to be spreading as fast as it could. I think a vaccination will be in place by the time it starts to spread in the UK. I'm not batch cooking yet and DH keeps raising my tinned soup store.

iranintl.com/en/iran/exclusive-11-coronavirus-deaths-iran

I have no idea how reputable Iran International is, but they are reporting 11 deaths.

HasaDigaEebowai · 21/02/2020 09:05

Reuters are reporting 200 new cases in 2 chinese prisons. Plus cases where people are testing negative, being released from hospital and then havig to be readmitted again and testing positive again. That's really worrying for our UK cases where people have been released.

LynetteScavo · 21/02/2020 09:07

@zen1 My teens are exactly the same...and their friends. They all think having flu will be a great laugh and they'll have a couple of weeks off school to binge watch Netflix. My mention that some schools may have to close at some point caused much glee. Oh to be young.

wherearemychickens · 21/02/2020 09:17

I've just seen a twitter video purporting to show big crowds outside a bank in China - i.e. a run on a bank. Tbh I'm becoming increasingly worried about the global economic effects of this. I'm in a industry very reliant on market confidence.

HasaDigaEebowai · 21/02/2020 09:25

FTSE 100 is down this morning.

BlackeyedSusan · 21/02/2020 09:44

S. Korea now up to 204. Again saying plus 90 something. It said that last night but went back down to about 50 this morning as I think some of the increase in cases counted for yesterday. Number of cases stayed the same.

WeBuiltCisCityOnSexistRoles · 21/02/2020 10:07

No special treatment required. My freezer has cheddar, red leicester, stilton, halloumi, feta, camembert parmesan, pecorino and mozarella

@HasaDigaEebowai I'll be there in an hour Grin

KaterMurr · 21/02/2020 10:08

I'm amazed more people aren't taking this seriously.

Ex-h (who, for example, did prep for Brexit, but has got a history of not taking big health things seriously - made me feel absolutely crazy for even considering getting the kids a private meningitis vaccine and says I'm overprotective cos I insist on bike helmets etc) just shurgged it off and said 'even if it does make it here, it'll just be like a mild flu'. I told him it's got a 20x higher fatality rate than the flu and he just said 'i don't really care'.

I think the more I talk to people, the more the problem is that most people struggle to see inbetweens. The virus either has to be 'mild, nothing to worry about' or 'ebola, plague' level of bad, rather than just 'it's kiiiind of comparable to a flu, moreso than ebola, only it'll kill a lot more people and put much more strain on the NHS.'

V. concerned about the Iran travel case in Canada. No countries are looking out for Iranian travel, so it just shows how dangerous it can be once it spreads to countries who either won't or can't report case numbers.

HasaDigaEebowai · 21/02/2020 10:14

Two new cases in Italy and 60 people quarantined.

HasaDigaEebowai · 21/02/2020 10:15

One of the new cases in Italy is a high school teacher..

HasaDigaEebowai · 21/02/2020 10:23

Thats five disposable masks though. Would last one person a day if used properly or at the most five days if you stretched it out (although once they get damp they are no longer working effectively.

Far better to buy a reuseable mask for 17.99 from screwfix or wickes which will last for a month plus you can then get new filters for £10. Elipse is the manufacturer.

LynetteScavo · 21/02/2020 10:38

I'm not actually worried about dying from it (although I'd really rather not have flu!) but it's the knock on effects- lack of services etc which will be an issue.

HasaDigaEebowai · 21/02/2020 10:44

2 new deaths in Iran

HighlandYak · 21/02/2020 10:46

I freeze yogurt on baking trays with frozen fruit and nuts chopped up on top, then when it's frozen cut into strips and put in a container in the freezer and I just eat then as frozen lolly snacks!

BlackeyedSusan · 21/02/2020 10:53

Arse. Italy is looking tricky. Looks like they are taking steps to contain it though.

The original case seems to be a friend of Milan man. Friend had been to China in January. Milan man's contacts (60 of them) are quarantined. His firm is taking steps, worryingly his wife is a highschool teacher ( confirmed case.) I wonder what they are doing about that?

FelicityFebruary · 21/02/2020 10:55

Wheresmychickens, thanks for your experiment!

I have dried packs of milk powder + culture that you can make up with water to make up "fresh" yoghurt. It's a brand so way too expensive really.

Making your own yoghurt using UHT milk and a Thermos is quite easy I believe and would be more economical.

SebandAlice · 21/02/2020 11:02

Thanks Echobench

Unfortunately they are out of stock now.

CrazyOnAComputer · 21/02/2020 11:10

I have a bit of a medical question thats been bugging me, if once you get the virus, maybe you get a bit of immunity, but can then get it again, how will a vaccine work then? If it mutates just a slight bit you will still get it again and again and again. That is why there is no vaccine for the common cold. so maybe a vaccine will be useless???
