Prepping for a pandemic....5

wheresmymojo · 20/02/2020 15:49

5th thread on prepping for a pandemic and following the risk of a COVID pandemic.

Anxiety

As Preppers we tend to look at a reasonable worst case scenario to plan for. Everyone is welcome on the thread but if you find it makes you anxious be kind to yourself and think about sticking to once daily updates from the BBC or similar Thanks

General COVID Info

The estimated replication rate is R= 2 to 4 based on latest expert estimates. This means each infected person spreads the virus to between 2 and 4 people. Experts estimate that, unchecked, it could infect 60% of the population.

Around 15-20% of cases are thought to be severe - that is resulting in the need for hospitalisation. Around 3-5% requiring ventilation.

The estimated mortality rate is around 1-2% at the moment (compared to 0.01-0.1% for flu). This may change as it is very difficult to estimate mortality.

Children tend to have milder symptoms. Those over 60 with underlying health issues and a history of smoking are more likely to be severe (although not exclusively this type of person).

Spread of COVID

It is estimated that the average incubation period is 3-5 days but can be as long as 24 days.

It can be spread with no symptoms.

It can be spread via droplet (cough/sneeze), aerosol (breathing same air in very close quarters), bodily fluids, fecal/oral route and formites (via surfaces, up to 28 days in the right circumstances but up to 3-5 days in more typical circumstances).

Updates

As this is a novel virus and knowledge is constantly being updated - I will post updates as they become available with links to source.

I am not a medical expert so any opinions or conjecture of my own should be taken with a pinch of salt!

Prepping Scenarios

Most of us are prepping for the following situations:

  • Wanting to stay indoors for 2-4 weeks + in case of a local outbreak / schools being closed
  • Potentially being ill with a flu type illness lasting 2-3 weeks with one or more of the household having the illness
  • Having to take a family member to hospital for COVID or any other reason during an outbreak

Prepping Items

Threads 1&2 have lists of things to think about to prep for the first scenario as do the Brexit prepping threads.

Main differences/additions to something like the Brexit list are:

  • Face masks if you can get them for any trips you have to make in public during an outbreak. These don't offer full protection and cannot be 100% relied upon but are probably better than nothing if you make sure you wear them correctly and dispose of them correctly. N95 masks are best but expensive and harder to wear, surgical face masks are second best. Dust masks are not going to help.
  • Hand sanitiser needs to be 60% or more alcohol content
  • Dettol / bleach / Miltons to disinfect. Not all disinfectants work but these three do
  • Plenty of at home/over counter treatments for flu type symptoms should you need to treat at home
  • Tissues (lots of) should you catch the virus
  • Think about meals that are easy to cook and eat should you be ill or both parents be ill at the same time (soup for example)
  • For a potential hospital trip you may want to prep a 'go bag' should you need to take someone to hospital with the virus (or anything else) during an outbreak. See Thread 1&2 for examples of what people are packing
  • Frequent and thorough hand washing, not touching your face and social distancing (no handshakes, hugs, etc) are some of the most effective ways to stay virus free

Other Thoughts

India have announced that they are stopping exports of some antibiotics, hormone treatments and vitamin supplements as they rely on China for raw materials.

Many factories that supplied fibre for use in sanitary towels and tampons are being diverted to manufacture face masks. Consider stocking up or changing to sustainable items (cloth STs, mooncup, period pants)

Every so often we get a letter from the school saying someone is having medical treatment and can we make sure our kids are vaccinated... and still they don't have soap in the loos.

Notstrongandstable · 21/02/2020 00:07

Absentminded- lets thank everyone who voted Tory for all the budget cuts. My children's school is £400K under budget this year, so yeah they have to ration the supplies..good work Conservative voters!

zen1 · 21/02/2020 00:17

I’m worried about my two teen DS’s and hand-washing. They just laugh and tell me I’m paranoid when I tell them the importance of regular and thorough handwashing. The only time they wash their hands is after the loo or before eating. They both travel round on public transport (London buses) for school and activities and rolled their eyes right round when I gave them each a hand gel to put in their bags.

BlackeyedSusan · 21/02/2020 00:26

I accidentally got Ds in contact with soapy water by washing his door handles and the bannisters.

Catmaiden · 21/02/2020 00:42

Checking in, thanks mojo!
I live rurally and quite remote, so have lots of stuff prepped as standard. We also grow a lot of our food and have livestock, so on top of meds, medical supplies/restock first aid boxes/household cleaners/ more masks, loo roll/ dried/tinned goods/milk/bread/flour etc re stock,
Im also getting in extra feed for the farm animals and dogs and cats.
And put my seed order in early!

pemberlyshades · 21/02/2020 00:51

@GorkyMcPorky if you can- just keep chickens! I've been doing it for years and then (prepping aside) are fab !

BlackeyedSusan · 21/02/2020 01:09

S Korea has +98 cases. Gone up to 156 cases.

Eek.

ItsNotJustTheFuckingFlu · 21/02/2020 01:27

I can't remember who it was but I remember a poster on the last mention going to London this weekend, I think it was you @GorkyMcPorky ? I was just wondering how you were feeling about the trip now.

We're off there tomorrow, travelling from the North East, and I was just wondering if you're a bit anxious or if it's eased off? Was going to PM you but didn't want to come across like a nosey cow 😀

GorkyMcPorky · 21/02/2020 04:42

@ItsNotJustTheFuckingFlu I'm reassured by the lack of new cases this week so we're going. Not that I think it won't arrive at all but unless it's rife I think we should go about our loves as normal. Making sure we pack tissues and hand gel for everyone and planning to walk rather than take the tube.

captainamericassexybeard · 21/02/2020 05:17

I’m feeling quite well prepped for the space I’ve got.
I need to pick up a few more tins and work out some breakfasts - got a few tubes of jus rol croissants and cinnamon whirls plus pancake mix to go with frozen fruit, not the most nutritionally sound but it would do.
Can anyone recommend a brand of powdered egg and powdered milk that’s not vile?!

I’ve got about 50 lites of bottled water and pick up a new 25p bottle every time I go out - handily have a lot of built in ottoman storage bench style units which are brilliant for storing these as well as tins.

I’ve also got lots of tinned fish, crackers, have frozen some cheese...I do need to go through everything though and work out what actual meals I could make as I have a feeling I have a lot of stuff but would still struggle for meals IYSWIM.

NearlySchoolTimeAgain · 21/02/2020 06:07

I used to buy wraps from Farmfoods - relatively cheap and amazingly long dates. The waffles in Aldi & Lidl are good for a while too. Saves freezer space.

When it comes to rice the norm seems to be about ½ cup (90g) per person, although some people prefer to use a bit less – about 1/3 cup (60g) per person. And remember we are talking about uncooked rice here, which means that when it's cooked it's usually about a cup per person, as rice doubles in size.

So 120g per person per day for two meals. So a 3.5kg bag would see my family of 4 through a week. That's reassuring. I picked up a big bag last week. The food to go with the rice would be peas & sweetcorn and some random protein. We have lots of different bits in the freezer and lots of tuna.

Magissa · 21/02/2020 06:38

Anyone know which handgwks are 60% or above? I bought Cuticura but the label says 57.6%. I found some in Hema but there is no info on the label.

Magissa · 21/02/2020 06:39

HandGEL...posted too quickly Blush

wheresmymojo · 21/02/2020 07:08

New case in Italy, worthy of mention as he is just 38 and in ICU already (and not Asian)

The numbers in China ticked back up again yesterday as they have at least two breakouts in prisons.

Also:

  • A woman in Canada has tested positive after travelling to Iran (chances of their being only six cases in Iran then?!)
  • Two DP cruise passengers who tested negative in Japan and travelled home to Oz have now tested positive
  • South Korean hospitals in the two cities mainly impacted by the 156 cases are reported to be struggling for beds.
OP posts:
BlackeyedSusan · 21/02/2020 07:19

Also the new Canadian case has returned from Iran. Now what does this suggests out Iran's cases?

BlackeyedSusan · 21/02/2020 07:20

Snap. Grin

BlackeyedSusan · 21/02/2020 07:23

Our city has Iranians that visit regularly. (Ex's friend's dps/pils)

Motorina · 21/02/2020 07:28

- Two DP cruise passengers who tested negative in Japan and travelled home to Oz have now tested positive

This means that some who have tested negative and simply released into Japan are also at risk of developing the virus. And spreading it wherever they end up. Which is concerning.

BlackeyedSusan · 21/02/2020 08:02

All those journalists, taxi drivers, etc...

Given that there are taxi drivers who caught it from tourists already.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 21/02/2020 08:18

I'm up in London both days this weekend, using trains and underground. I'm still ok with it. I'll take some hand wipes. but even if there was someone on the same train as me with an infection (very low probability), the chances of catching it would still be very small.

I'm saving my anxiety about getting it for if/when we have multiple community outbreaks in the country. Anxiety is exhausting and leads to illness, so I'm trying to be as pragmatic as I can be.

WeBuiltCisCityOnSexistRoles · 21/02/2020 08:28

Wait.

CANNED BREAD.

What is this?

Also, what do people think is the best way to freeze cheese? I'm thinking grated? I've never frozen cheese before #Failingatprepping

SebandAlice · 21/02/2020 08:30

@Effieray
Can you give a link to Scion? I have had a google but no luck

wherearemychickens · 21/02/2020 08:45

We just freeze blocks of cheddar. It goes a bit crumbly, but then we normally are just grating it anyway.
