Prepping for a pandemic....5

5th thread on prepping for a pandemic and following the risk of a COVID pandemic.

Anxiety

As Preppers we tend to look at a reasonable worst case scenario to plan for. Everyone is welcome on the thread but if you find it makes you anxious be kind to yourself and think about sticking to once daily updates from the BBC or similar Thanks

General COVID Info

The estimated replication rate is R= 2 to 4 based on latest expert estimates. This means each infected person spreads the virus to between 2 and 4 people. Experts estimate that, unchecked, it could infect 60% of the population.

Around 15-20% of cases are thought to be severe - that is resulting in the need for hospitalisation. Around 3-5% requiring ventilation.

The estimated mortality rate is around 1-2% at the moment (compared to 0.01-0.1% for flu). This may change as it is very difficult to estimate mortality.

Children tend to have milder symptoms. Those over 60 with underlying health issues and a history of smoking are more likely to be severe (although not exclusively this type of person).

Spread of COVID

It is estimated that the average incubation period is 3-5 days but can be as long as 24 days.

It can be spread with no symptoms.

It can be spread via droplet (cough/sneeze), aerosol (breathing same air in very close quarters), bodily fluids, fecal/oral route and formites (via surfaces, up to 28 days in the right circumstances but up to 3-5 days in more typical circumstances).

Updates

As this is a novel virus and knowledge is constantly being updated - I will post updates as they become available with links to source.

I am not a medical expert so any opinions or conjecture of my own should be taken with a pinch of salt!

Prepping Scenarios

Most of us are prepping for the following situations:

  • Wanting to stay indoors for 2-4 weeks + in case of a local outbreak / schools being closed
  • Potentially being ill with a flu type illness lasting 2-3 weeks with one or more of the household having the illness
  • Having to take a family member to hospital for COVID or any other reason during an outbreak

Prepping Items

Threads 1&2 have lists of things to think about to prep for the first scenario as do the Brexit prepping threads.

Main differences/additions to something like the Brexit list are:

  • Face masks if you can get them for any trips you have to make in public during an outbreak. These don't offer full protection and cannot be 100% relied upon but are probably better than nothing if you make sure you wear them correctly and dispose of them correctly. N95 masks are best but expensive and harder to wear, surgical face masks are second best. Dust masks are not going to help.
  • Hand sanitiser needs to be 60% or more alcohol content
  • Dettol / bleach / Miltons to disinfect. Not all disinfectants work but these three do
  • Plenty of at home/over counter treatments for flu type symptoms should you need to treat at home
  • Tissues (lots of) should you catch the virus
  • Think about meals that are easy to cook and eat should you be ill or both parents be ill at the same time (soup for example)
  • For a potential hospital trip you may want to prep a 'go bag' should you need to take someone to hospital with the virus (or anything else) during an outbreak. See Thread 1&2 for examples of what people are packing
  • Frequent and thorough hand washing, not touching your face and social distancing (no handshakes, hugs, etc) are some of the most effective ways to stay virus free

Other Thoughts

India have announced that they are stopping exports of some antibiotics, hormone treatments and vitamin supplements as they rely on China for raw materials.

Many factories that supplied fibre for use in sanitary towels and tampons are being diverted to manufacture face masks. Consider stocking up or changing to sustainable items (cloth STs, mooncup, period pants)

I think if they’re going to be putting adverts out like that, that they should be informative in their own right - like ‘how to wash your hands properly’ AND showing the virus going from a cough/sneeze on someone’s hands to a post in a bus onto someone else’s hands’ type things with instructions/video not just a link to the NHS

BlackeyedSusan · 20/02/2020 20:07

Definitely @AmelieTaylor

So effective.

BlackeyedSusan · 20/02/2020 20:10

Schools need to be pushing hygiene in tutor time/ assemblies. They could set up experiments to see how stuff spreads round school. I may be inspired by cleaning ink off the cupboard, banisters, sink, toilet seat...etc.

Leatherupper · 20/02/2020 20:41

They don’t even have soap in the loos at DS’s school. Disgusting.

Perihelion · 20/02/2020 21:00

Just asked DD how many sinks are in the toilets that her year group and the two below ( so approx 200 girls ) and it's 3. And they're not allowed out of class to go to the toilet.

Hello,
I am new to this thread, tried to read much but have not read everything yet. Would love to “compare notes“ nevertheless. Things I did not see mentioned on this thread but I think might proof useful.

  • Examination gloves, I have read they minimize the risk of infection
-Toys, books, coloring books for the kids. Mine have many toys but I figured that if they have to stay inside for a long time it will make it easier for them if you give them a new toy
  • Canned bread (can be bought at military surplus) some here are talking about putting bread in the freezer, if you buy canned bread you have more room in the freezer
-powdered eggs -powdered milk

Sorry, if this has been mentioned and I just didn’t see it.

We were already preppers before the virus, mostly thought about the dangers of a blackout.

Would love to list the foods we bought here but not sure if that would be boring for you. Should I list them?

South Korea is reporting that its cases have doubled in 24 hours from 52 to 104.

Quite a few of them are a cluster linked to a sect / cult.

Also - things have been kicking off in Ukraine as local residents practically rioted about not wanting people from the DP cruise quarantined near them. Confused

I'd be interested to know about the powdered egg. Can you get it free range?

Haven't seen much mention of nuts - got to be a good prepper food!

BlackeyedSusan · 20/02/2020 21:20

@IvyBush123 I do like a good list. Maybe stick it on a shorter thread so it does not get lost. Either find one that is already started or post a new one.

BlackeyedSusan · 20/02/2020 21:21

Who you calling nuts?

wheresmymojo · 20/02/2020 21:21

Latest video from Prof Neil Ferguson

I probably won't have time to watch it until tomorrow. DH apparently thinks watching videos about Coronavirus "isn't fun or relaxing". Tsk.

IvyBush123 · 20/02/2020 21:23

Yes, you can get powdered egg free range on Amazon (different brands). Unfortunately I cannot tell you if those brands are any good, because I bought ours at a camping store. We also use it for camping and chose it because it come in a waterproof bag and because we like that brand of powdered egg we only bought this one brand.

It's getting quite worrying in Iran, all kicking off a bit.

Basically the brother of one of the people who died says they have lied - not elderly but 60 years old, no existing health issues and caught COVID 'in the streets of Qom'. The brother is a member of Iran's central medical committee. Accuses other officials of a cover up.

Many residents don't believe the official accounts that there isn't already a problem with spreading (as they say their Govt lied about shooting down a passenger plane for 3 days so don't trust them).

Several other suspected cases across Iran, a metro station has been shut to be disinfected.

It's pretty concerning if it's in the wild in that region. Poor sods.

mybrainhurtsalot · 20/02/2020 21:34

The cubs pack I volunteer with did an experiment about germs/hand washing. I can’t remember it exactly but I think the kids all put some special liquid/cream on their hands, then washed as usual and then popped their hands in a machine that showed up missed areas as light patches. When I did it the main areas that glowed were the nail beds and the bits of skin between my fingers.

FelicityFebruary · 20/02/2020 21:35

Interesting video.

AvocadoOwl · 20/02/2020 21:37

I like Prof Ferguson, he has such a calm measured tone of voice.

mybrainhurtsalot · 20/02/2020 21:41

Sorry, got distracted when writing my message and by the time I posted the discussion had moved on - my post was in response to BlackEyedSusan’s comment about schools teaching hand washing/doing experiments to show germ spread.

AmelieTaylor · 20/02/2020 22:11

@Leatherupper - my friend is a caretaker of 3 schools (on the one grounds) they don’t have soap as the HTeachers say the kids just make a mess with it. 🙄. He agrees they sometimes do, but they sometimes make a mess with water, toilet paper, food, soil, paint and everything else - soap AND hand drying towels should not be optional!

@wheresmymojo. A Pubic Liason
officer could be fun!

@IvyBush123. This is the 5th thread in this ‘series’ & stuff for the kids has definitely been mentioned but new people are joining all the time & I doubt many of them have read the previous 4 threads, so it doesn’t hurt.

AmelieTaylor · 20/02/2020 22:18

There was a link on a previous thread to a classroom experiment done with a loaf of bread

I winder if anyone still has the link to hand, it was really good & one to show your schools & see if they’ll give it a go or at the very least show the kids the link.

AmelieTaylor · 20/02/2020 22:19

@mybrainhurtsalot. If you’re able to find out what it was you used, thst would be great!

AvocadoOwl · 20/02/2020 22:28

I did a hand washing experiment with my kids a while back. Pack of cheap Petri dishes and some easily made agar. They loved it. We did the usual washed/unwashed hands and then all sorts of things like toys, the tv remote, the dogs paw etc. Can't remember which dish ended up being the grossest but the unwashed hand were up there.

AbsentmindedWoman · 20/02/2020 22:42

Genuinely horrified some schools have no soap in the loos?

That is utterly revolting, even leaving out anyone getting sick. That surely means a big proportion of kids are eating their sandwiches with filthy hands?

I'd be fucking livid if I was the parent of an immunocompromised kid. It's a slap in the face, I know the school can't police hand washing but taking away the means for proper hand washing is outrageous.
