Prepping for a pandemic....5

5th thread on prepping for a pandemic and following the risk of a COVID pandemic.

Anxiety

As Preppers we tend to look at a reasonable worst case scenario to plan for. Everyone is welcome on the thread but if you find it makes you anxious be kind to yourself and think about sticking to once daily updates from the BBC or similar Thanks

General COVID Info

The estimated replication rate is R= 2 to 4 based on latest expert estimates. This means each infected person spreads the virus to between 2 and 4 people. Experts estimate that, unchecked, it could infect 60% of the population.

Around 15-20% of cases are thought to be severe - that is resulting in the need for hospitalisation. Around 3-5% requiring ventilation.

The estimated mortality rate is around 1-2% at the moment (compared to 0.01-0.1% for flu). This may change as it is very difficult to estimate mortality.

Children tend to have milder symptoms. Those over 60 with underlying health issues and a history of smoking are more likely to be severe (although not exclusively this type of person).

Spread of COVID

It is estimated that the average incubation period is 3-5 days but can be as long as 24 days.

It can be spread with no symptoms.

It can be spread via droplet (cough/sneeze), aerosol (breathing same air in very close quarters), bodily fluids, fecal/oral route and formites (via surfaces, up to 28 days in the right circumstances but up to 3-5 days in more typical circumstances).

Updates

As this is a novel virus and knowledge is constantly being updated - I will post updates as they become available with links to source.

I am not a medical expert so any opinions or conjecture of my own should be taken with a pinch of salt!

Prepping Scenarios

Most of us are prepping for the following situations:

  • Wanting to stay indoors for 2-4 weeks + in case of a local outbreak / schools being closed
  • Potentially being ill with a flu type illness lasting 2-3 weeks with one or more of the household having the illness
  • Having to take a family member to hospital for COVID or any other reason during an outbreak

Prepping Items

Threads 1&2 have lists of things to think about to prep for the first scenario as do the Brexit prepping threads.

Main differences/additions to something like the Brexit list are:

  • Face masks if you can get them for any trips you have to make in public during an outbreak. These don't offer full protection and cannot be 100% relied upon but are probably better than nothing if you make sure you wear them correctly and dispose of them correctly. N95 masks are best but expensive and harder to wear, surgical face masks are second best. Dust masks are not going to help.
  • Hand sanitiser needs to be 60% or more alcohol content
  • Dettol / bleach / Miltons to disinfect. Not all disinfectants work but these three do
  • Plenty of at home/over counter treatments for flu type symptoms should you need to treat at home
  • Tissues (lots of) should you catch the virus
  • Think about meals that are easy to cook and eat should you be ill or both parents be ill at the same time (soup for example)
  • For a potential hospital trip you may want to prep a 'go bag' should you need to take someone to hospital with the virus (or anything else) during an outbreak. See Thread 1&2 for examples of what people are packing
  • Frequent and thorough hand washing, not touching your face and social distancing (no handshakes, hugs, etc) are some of the most effective ways to stay virus free

Other Thoughts

India have announced that they are stopping exports of some antibiotics, hormone treatments and vitamin supplements as they rely on China for raw materials.

Many factories that supplied fibre for use in sanitary towels and tampons are being diverted to manufacture face masks. Consider stocking up or changing to sustainable items (cloth STs, mooncup, period pants)

Ahh my Asda order isn't coming until tonight, hope I've no subs. I'm in uni (mature student haha!) and very aware of everyone coughing everywhere. Ugh.

FourTeaFallOut · 24/02/2020 12:34

My 6yo hates hand cream but he has really dry hands. I have to sneak into his room at night and cover his hands in Aveeno. If he ever catches me, I'm in for it. Blush

SawingForTeens · 24/02/2020 12:56

Don't usually post here, just read, and am pages and pages behind, but has anyone else wondered why the BBC Online news has nothing about the shut down of towns in Italy? Or is it how my page is set up?

ofwarren · 24/02/2020 12:59

The article who's headline is "Coronavirus spread raised fear of pandemic" is the top story on my app.
It mentions the lock downs nearer the bottom of the article.

SawingForTeens · 24/02/2020 13:00

Found a watch/listen under the World heading, after scrolling down. Saharan sandstorm seems more important.

SawingForTeens · 24/02/2020 13:04

Yes I saw that ofwarren, scrolling right down to the bottom!

This was my DH's response: Further proof that BBC news goes through a editorial process that considers the consequences of covering or not covering a story? The test is not just "is this news". It is "is this the version of the world we want to portray". A world in which a major European country is using the army to contain its sick citizens might hurt feelz, or less cynically, might promote anxiety.

AmelieTaylor · 24/02/2020 13:13

My Tesco shop just arrived with only one item missing (I click NO substitutes for most of my shopping, a couple of things I write what I’d be happy to accept as a substitute (no idea if you can do that with Asda or not

A couple of items were ‘out of stock’ so I couldn’t order them

A few things are coming & going as far as availability, but so far not a problem as they’ve been available the time.

I’m still contemplating ordering the fridge/freezer as not having any freezer space and only a tiny fridge is a bit restrictive, but I really didn’t want to until the new kitchen was in, as until the old kitchen is removed it’ll have to go in a very awkward position and currently the new kitchen isn’t even on order’ 🙄.

Another thing with online ordering is that , yet again, it’s all arrived soaking wet, so I’m having to wipe everything down and try to dry the cardboard etc before it gets stored. Another bloody job to do And I need to get more storage boxes 🙄

@FourTeaFallOut. Have you tried the children’s farm stuff or a mans one?

Is it the feel, smell or idea if it he doesn’t like?

I hate hand cream too, mostly the feel of it ‘sitting’ on my hands afterwards. The only one I don’t mind the feeling of (Clarins Jeunesse des Mains), the smell is now giving me a headache/making me feel sick (I’m VERY sensitive to essential oils/fragrances/lots of chemicals/ingredients) so I’m trying to find something new I can tolerate. Currently trying the Norwegian formula (massively greasy feeling, but eventually sinks in if I use it sparingly & I’m patient. I’m going to try some kids ones next I think!

I agree sawing it took the BBC a whole 24 hours to even report what was happening in italy, even though it was all over world news

wheresmymojo · 24/02/2020 13:18

Well Sky aren't pulling any punches now - top news item features a picture of the Italian police or army with huge guns and masks

According to Sky BoJo is saying the risk to the UK 'remains low' Hmm

I understand the need to ensure no one panics but I really think that if it turns out to be serious this will prove to have been a stupid move.

They should have been (as PP have said) slowly drip feeding messages so that people start to prepare without panicking.

I wish I had enough money to play the stock market as it seems investors only woke up today to move from futures to gilts. I'd have been there 3 weeks before them!

I’ve got a massive Asda order coming tonight and the only subbed item is a Paw Patrol plate for a Peppa Pig one (which will be unacceptable for DD but isn’t a prepping concern Grin).

ofwarren · 24/02/2020 13:27

How can it remain low when people travel to and from here to Italy, Thailand, china etc all the time! Surely it's at least a moderate risk?

amd4578 · 24/02/2020 13:30

Most people are aware that what ever story is clicked on the most will appear at the top of the news. More people click it so they put it at the top to entice ever more people to click it.

that is why sometimes there will be random things at the top about celebrities and other noncence people dont care about because all the celeb lovers will click on to read it so it becomes top news!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 24/02/2020 13:31

of course it's not low. People who've returned from Italy in the affected region after half term need to be looking out for symptoms. False reassurances don't help anyone. I wonder if he has an actual educated advisor helping him with these statements.

ofwarren · 24/02/2020 13:33

6 cases in Italy now

ofwarren · 24/02/2020 13:33

Deaths I mean

amd4578 · 24/02/2020 13:34

Hence why corona virus sometimes is not mentioned in the top news stories online because rightly or wrongly many people really are not that fussed at the moment.i work in a busy uk airport and have seen not a single person with masks on today. a couple of weeks back loads of people were and now it just seems people are not that fussed or worried about it anymore.

wheresmymojo · 24/02/2020 13:34

While I'm venting about the Govt response - they just aren't being proactive enough.

This is a fast moving situation and yet their approach is not being updated.

Case in point about Italy - lots of people coming back from Italy this weekend as others have said.

Zero guidance provided re: coming back from Italy. Even from areas where there are community clusters.

In the absence of such updates it does lead you to then conclude they have given up.

Given Cummings love of eugenics type thinking it wouldn't be beyond the realm of doubt that he's said it would be better to just let it happen.

Less pensioners = less pensions = less deficit and also a freeing up of houses.

I don't think there's any other Govt I would ever have imagined having that kind of conversation behind closed doors except this one.

That's interesting @amd4578

People's concern has reduced just as the risk has increased as it reaches Europe.

NEW: Italy reports another death from coronavirus, raising death toll to 6, three of which happened today; latest patient was someone being treated for cancer - ANSA t.co/eUoE2b20hL

Orangecake123 · 24/02/2020 13:43

I actually do agree with your last post Mojo.

FourTeaFallOut · 24/02/2020 13:47

AmelieTaylor It's everything really, he doesn't like the feel or the smell, he doesn't like any fuss. Originally I would cover my hands in cream and then hold his hand but he got wise to that pretty damned quick so no I'm reduced to sneaking around like the hand cream fairy.

Fww, I just use the regular Aveeno body cream and it soaks in super quick and doesn't have a strong smell and it's very good for fixing dry hands quickly, so I'd recommend that.

Yesiwearspandex · 24/02/2020 13:48

The problem with calling it a "pandemic" is that a lot of things would be triggered on the declaration of a "pandemic".
Insurance covers come to mind (because I work in the sector). If you have a standard health insurance through work, most likely a "pandemic" won't be covered.
