Prepping for a pandemic....5

5th thread on prepping for a pandemic and following the risk of a COVID pandemic.

Anxiety

As Preppers we tend to look at a reasonable worst case scenario to plan for. Everyone is welcome on the thread but if you find it makes you anxious be kind to yourself and think about sticking to once daily updates from the BBC or similar Thanks

General COVID Info

The estimated replication rate is R= 2 to 4 based on latest expert estimates. This means each infected person spreads the virus to between 2 and 4 people. Experts estimate that, unchecked, it could infect 60% of the population.

Around 15-20% of cases are thought to be severe - that is resulting in the need for hospitalisation. Around 3-5% requiring ventilation.

The estimated mortality rate is around 1-2% at the moment (compared to 0.01-0.1% for flu). This may change as it is very difficult to estimate mortality.

Children tend to have milder symptoms. Those over 60 with underlying health issues and a history of smoking are more likely to be severe (although not exclusively this type of person).

Spread of COVID

It is estimated that the average incubation period is 3-5 days but can be as long as 24 days.

It can be spread with no symptoms.

It can be spread via droplet (cough/sneeze), aerosol (breathing same air in very close quarters), bodily fluids, fecal/oral route and formites (via surfaces, up to 28 days in the right circumstances but up to 3-5 days in more typical circumstances).

Updates

As this is a novel virus and knowledge is constantly being updated - I will post updates as they become available with links to source.

I am not a medical expert so any opinions or conjecture of my own should be taken with a pinch of salt!

Prepping Scenarios

Most of us are prepping for the following situations:

  • Wanting to stay indoors for 2-4 weeks + in case of a local outbreak / schools being closed
  • Potentially being ill with a flu type illness lasting 2-3 weeks with one or more of the household having the illness
  • Having to take a family member to hospital for COVID or any other reason during an outbreak

Prepping Items

Threads 1&2 have lists of things to think about to prep for the first scenario as do the Brexit prepping threads.

Main differences/additions to something like the Brexit list are:

  • Face masks if you can get them for any trips you have to make in public during an outbreak. These don't offer full protection and cannot be 100% relied upon but are probably better than nothing if you make sure you wear them correctly and dispose of them correctly. N95 masks are best but expensive and harder to wear, surgical face masks are second best. Dust masks are not going to help.
  • Hand sanitiser needs to be 60% or more alcohol content
  • Dettol / bleach / Miltons to disinfect. Not all disinfectants work but these three do
  • Plenty of at home/over counter treatments for flu type symptoms should you need to treat at home
  • Tissues (lots of) should you catch the virus
  • Think about meals that are easy to cook and eat should you be ill or both parents be ill at the same time (soup for example)
  • For a potential hospital trip you may want to prep a 'go bag' should you need to take someone to hospital with the virus (or anything else) during an outbreak. See Thread 1&2 for examples of what people are packing
  • Frequent and thorough hand washing, not touching your face and social distancing (no handshakes, hugs, etc) are some of the most effective ways to stay virus free

Other Thoughts

India have announced that they are stopping exports of some antibiotics, hormone treatments and vitamin supplements as they rely on China for raw materials.

Many factories that supplied fibre for use in sanitary towels and tampons are being diverted to manufacture face masks. Consider stocking up or changing to sustainable items (cloth STs, mooncup, period pants)

Ah @VenetoResident that sounds rough - so are
You and DH ill also or is it a result of stress (cortisol and adrenaline?)
Either way I hope you are all on the mend soon
Some great tips there as well.

Skyejuly · 24/02/2020 07:32

My OH was not keen on spending food money either. I didnt actually spend that much extra as alot if it was smart price etc. We dont mind eating value stuff. I brought a few of those 3kg pasta bags and rice bags and the rest is the value range so I only spent an extra £20 each shop but got a fair bit. There is 6 of us so it wouldnt go far but I could cover a while if we had small meals. Lots of biscuits. Not nutritious but tide you over.

AvocadoOwl · 24/02/2020 07:35

Thinking of you this morning @Veneto Thanks

I don't see how the WHO can delay declaring a pandemic much longer, but I hope it doesn't mean that measures to try and limit the spread aren't relaxed too much. Surely there is still much to be gained from slowing the spread in individual countries in terms of strain on health systems etc.

I feel like we are all just waiting for it to kick off here in the same way as it has in Italy.

ofwarren · 24/02/2020 07:37

New case in Afghanistan just reporting

KundaliniRising · 24/02/2020 07:43

VenetoResident, i wish your ds2 a speedy recovery and i sincearly hope that no one in your family has cv19 Flowers

Just catching up with the news and this fred.....

LeGrandBleu · 24/02/2020 07:50

Italy hasn't reported yet the new cases, but sadly there has been a 4th death.

AvocadoOwl · 24/02/2020 07:55

I wonder how long the virus must have been spreading unnoticed in Italy in order for it to have affected so many people?

Choux · 24/02/2020 07:56

@LeGrandBleu how do you know that?

LeGrandBleu · 24/02/2020 08:01

Italian newspapers are reporting it
www.corriere.it (quarto morto = 4 death)
www.repubblica.it

EliK · 24/02/2020 08:05

Morning everyone.
I initially thought they'd announce pandemic today but I think they'll hold off until the end of the week or sooner if we see a sudden outbreak elsewhere.
I've got an Asda shop coming with tinned fruit and veg, long-life milk, cleaning supplies and vitamins - delivery driver will probably think I'm nuts.

Choux · 24/02/2020 08:11

I imagine the delivery driver will have seen a few orders like your and as a result is quietly prepping himself.

Looks like the new Italian death is an 84 yr old. Had a conversation with my parents in their 80s in extra care housing about keeping their food stocks high in case self isolation. As my mum with dementia said (quite cheerfully) 'oh a virus could rip through here'. I didn't mention that death rates in over 80s were significantly higher than other age groups. Just that a few extra tins and bread and other essentials couldn't hurt.

ofwarren · 24/02/2020 08:16

Putting in an extra Asda delivery today. Getting £100 worth of tins and dried goods to add to the stash.

HuntedUp · 24/02/2020 08:37

My final shop is due this morning but I’m stressing because we’ve got a load of snow and all the roads are blocked. Hoping it gets here eventually

BlackeyedSusan · 24/02/2020 08:40

Going to see mother today. As she is over 80, I always wonder whether it is the last time. I was considering staying over in her house, I think I prefer to come home where I have preparations.

My fridge freezer has been playing up, I need to order a new one. Problem is I have both compartments full. I don't want another Hotpoint. It is dodgy as fuck. ( Only works if you take the top drawer of the freezer out.)

It is packed solid. Need to find something of comparable size.

NaturalBornWoman · 24/02/2020 08:43

I've been putting off buying a food stash because I'm struggling to see how we would eat a lot of tinned and long life stuff unless absolutely desperate and it's potentially so wasteful. I hardly even use the freezer. I have now cleared out and defrosted the freezer and have a big order set up with all my usual meat and fish enough for a month, plus long life milk, frozen veg, bread mixes, cheese, crackers, tinned fish, tomatoes etc. it's set up for Saturday but now it's all kicking off in Italy I'm wondering if I should bring it forward, they got shut down so quickly. I'm dithering.

WeBuiltCisCityOnSexistRoles · 24/02/2020 08:43

Thoughts to all those in affected areas. I know what you mean about hypothetical situations becoming reality, it can be very disconcerting and a bit terrifying. I hope everyone is OK.

I had an interesting conversation with DH yesterday (who a few weeks ago thought I was over reacting a bit) when we saw the empty shelves in Italy. When we last had an inch of snow here our local supermarkets looked the same and we live in an area where people love an excuse for a fight in Sainsbury's HmmGrin

So now we have decided we are prepping for people not just a pandemic. DH is now very much on board and added plasters to the shopping order.

(I think I said already my GP wrote my repeat script with an extra month, well I got a text from the chemist yesterday reminding me to pick them up. This doesn't usually happen so I wonder if it's related or just a new system which has me jumping at shadows!)

AlohaMolly · 24/02/2020 08:45

My FIL has been in Australia for seven weeks with his brother and is due to fly back at the beginning of March. MIL wants to take 3 yo DS with her to pick him up from a train station... AIBU to feel really uneasy? I don’t for a second think there’ll be infection at the train station but PIL isn’t exactly on top of his hygiene and will have been on the plane. But then again, Australia doesn’t seem to have been badly hit yet?

AlohaMolly · 24/02/2020 08:51

What I also really can’t understand is why there isn’t more reporting on mainstream media? Tbh, I avoid all mainstream, don’t watch the tv live, don’t have FB apart from on my work phone, but if it was widely talked about, my friends and family would mention it. As it stands, my info comes from here and they think I’m crazy!

ofwarren · 24/02/2020 08:56

It is headline news on both the BBC and SKY at the moment. There will be a large portion of normalcy bias at play aloha none of my family or friends seem even remotely concerned either.

BlackeyedSusan · 24/02/2020 08:59

It was covered well on R4 this morning. Ramped up a bit from last week too, warning of pandemic and needing to take extra measures that may effect our everyday lives.

ofwarren · 24/02/2020 08:59

UPDATE: Italy reports 38 new cases of coronavirus, raising total to 193 cases and 4 dead t.co/eUoE2b20hL

fannyanney · 24/02/2020 09:03

None of my friends or family are talking about it either. Some even thing it's all a cover up.

Dennisreynoldsduster · 24/02/2020 09:04

Same here @ofwarren
DH is on board largely because of baby DS, but hardly any of my friends or family have even clocked it really. A few are aware but don’t seem remotely bothered. It’s made me feel quite mad!

I saw a thread on here about people excitedly planning holidays to Italy and Thailand and Japan etc and thought I must be a lunatic surely! 😁
I’m not saying life should stop, but surely if you’re planning travel this would be a consideration?
And here I am stocking up on Nutella and nappies (all the important things Grin) and feeling quite thankful we don’t have any travel booked.

I suspect after seeing what’s happened in Italy with the empty shelves our government will be even less inclined to give us the real info any time soon...

ofwarren · 24/02/2020 09:04

A cover up for what fanny? People can be so strange
