Prepping for a pandemic....5

5th thread on prepping for a pandemic and following the risk of a COVID pandemic.

Anxiety

As Preppers we tend to look at a reasonable worst case scenario to plan for. Everyone is welcome on the thread but if you find it makes you anxious be kind to yourself and think about sticking to once daily updates from the BBC or similar Thanks

General COVID Info

The estimated replication rate is R= 2 to 4 based on latest expert estimates. This means each infected person spreads the virus to between 2 and 4 people. Experts estimate that, unchecked, it could infect 60% of the population.

Around 15-20% of cases are thought to be severe - that is resulting in the need for hospitalisation. Around 3-5% requiring ventilation.

The estimated mortality rate is around 1-2% at the moment (compared to 0.01-0.1% for flu). This may change as it is very difficult to estimate mortality.

Children tend to have milder symptoms. Those over 60 with underlying health issues and a history of smoking are more likely to be severe (although not exclusively this type of person).

Spread of COVID

It is estimated that the average incubation period is 3-5 days but can be as long as 24 days.

It can be spread with no symptoms.

It can be spread via droplet (cough/sneeze), aerosol (breathing same air in very close quarters), bodily fluids, fecal/oral route and formites (via surfaces, up to 28 days in the right circumstances but up to 3-5 days in more typical circumstances).

Updates

As this is a novel virus and knowledge is constantly being updated - I will post updates as they become available with links to source.

I am not a medical expert so any opinions or conjecture of my own should be taken with a pinch of salt!

Prepping Scenarios

Most of us are prepping for the following situations:

  • Wanting to stay indoors for 2-4 weeks + in case of a local outbreak / schools being closed
  • Potentially being ill with a flu type illness lasting 2-3 weeks with one or more of the household having the illness
  • Having to take a family member to hospital for COVID or any other reason during an outbreak

Prepping Items

Threads 1&2 have lists of things to think about to prep for the first scenario as do the Brexit prepping threads.

Main differences/additions to something like the Brexit list are:

  • Face masks if you can get them for any trips you have to make in public during an outbreak. These don't offer full protection and cannot be 100% relied upon but are probably better than nothing if you make sure you wear them correctly and dispose of them correctly. N95 masks are best but expensive and harder to wear, surgical face masks are second best. Dust masks are not going to help.
  • Hand sanitiser needs to be 60% or more alcohol content
  • Dettol / bleach / Miltons to disinfect. Not all disinfectants work but these three do
  • Plenty of at home/over counter treatments for flu type symptoms should you need to treat at home
  • Tissues (lots of) should you catch the virus
  • Think about meals that are easy to cook and eat should you be ill or both parents be ill at the same time (soup for example)
  • For a potential hospital trip you may want to prep a 'go bag' should you need to take someone to hospital with the virus (or anything else) during an outbreak. See Thread 1&2 for examples of what people are packing
  • Frequent and thorough hand washing, not touching your face and social distancing (no handshakes, hugs, etc) are some of the most effective ways to stay virus free

Other Thoughts

India have announced that they are stopping exports of some antibiotics, hormone treatments and vitamin supplements as they rely on China for raw materials.

Many factories that supplied fibre for use in sanitary towels and tampons are being diverted to manufacture face masks. Consider stocking up or changing to sustainable items (cloth STs, mooncup, period pants)

I've not commented since thread 1 but I've been quietly following all these threads, so another thanks to mojo from me.

My nurse friend told me to "stop panicking it's just the flu" when all I did was query whether a suspected case she dealt with in Leeds tested positive or not, she didn't actually answer my question and just said that they're self quarantining.

I've not told anyone about my prepping or stash but I feel happy and prepared with what I have. I usually make my own pancakes but I bought the krusteaze pancake mix the other week, 2 large bags for £19.99 on eBay, and I can confirm they are delicious.

ofwarren · 24/02/2020 10:32

What kind of items @SkyeJuly ?

preponderings · 24/02/2020 10:46

(Printer) paper for the kids to draw on. Plus a few rolls of sticky tape, DD's weapon of choice.

I think our toner is almost out so I don't know I'd be able to print out work sheets for them! Did just order them some workbooks though.

DH is looking a bit worried as the Italy cases are too close to home. I complained he hadn't done any household shopping last Friday, he said I should do it though the week. Pointed balancing stuff on my head whilst pulling my trusty trolleys isn't very practical! MIL called this morning and she's the first person who's mentioned it to me. I spoke to my parents about it and they're all "won't happen to us, we're going travelling anyway". I had to cut MiL off this morning as the Dc were fighting Hmm so I think I'll call her back now. Where she lives has lots of tourists from Northern Italy.

FelicityFebruary · 24/02/2020 10:59

I have just remembered an old fashioned, long shelf life item that is seasonal in my supermarket this week : the humble Jif lemon! It was the talk of pancakes. It's on the list.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 24/02/2020 11:08

Jif do long life lemon and also lime juice. I've bought one of each but am.hoping I dont have to resort to them!

Choux · 24/02/2020 11:14

Jif lemon juice good for adding flavour to food. Pasta, bit of philly cheese melted (long life and often only £1), frozen peas, prawns and a splash of lemon juice. It's a meal you could make after all the fresh veg has run out.

FelicityFebruary · 24/02/2020 11:41

Thanks Choux for another freezer / cupboard meal idea.
Frozen prawns can go on my list too. I have bits of space in the freezer.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 24/02/2020 11:42

For a very middle class store cupboard meal, decent hummus can be made with chickpeas, tahini, lemon and garlic. Plus you can use the chickpea water to make meringue (I've not tried that though)

AmelieTaylor · 24/02/2020 11:45

@fannyanney.

You know people that think COVID19 is a cover for Brexit

If I wasn’t so worried about people saying this actually living in the UK & the risk they are should we need to do the same as Italy, I’d kill myself laughing...but it’s morons like this, that will cause the rapid spread of it.

Millions in China on lock down
Thousands dead
Thousands affected on cruise liners
Thousands already affected worldwide
Hundreds outside of China dead
Etc etc

Yep totally plausible as a ‘cover up’ for Brexit

Jesus H Christ

& they say ‘leavers’ are thick.

wheresmymojo · 24/02/2020 11:59

Italy are now reporting 64 new cases today & 5 dead (so one more death) = 224 cases, 5 dead

Iran have reported another 21 cases & 4 more deaths = 64 cases, 12 dead (suspected to be many more)

Take with a pinch of salt as it's just a Reddit user but report from south of Germany:

"I live in the south of Germany one hour away from the Swiss border, 20 minutes away from the French border.

I just got back from shopping to several supermarkets (Lidl, Aldi, Rewe).

Please consider that it is Monday so the shelves got all re-stocked this morning.

Well, pasta, toilet paper, frozen goods, flour, sugar and a lot of other stuff was either sold out or almost sold out and the stores were packed with people.

I asked one of the cashiers what is going on and he said: it's like Christmas today, we don't know what is going on. They called in additional staff to cope with all the shoppers.

Meanwhile German stock market is crashing (I sold everything last week!).

We don't even have cases here and people are already losing their shit.

I'm glad that I did my prepping weeks ago."

Hello. I am belatedly prepping for staying at home for a couple of weeks as I am in Northern Italy and schools and work is closed.

Seventyone72seventy3 · 24/02/2020 12:04

BTW I went to the supermarket this morning and it was busy but everything was available.

ofwarren · 24/02/2020 12:06

My husband works in finance and he says the German stock market has tanked so I wouldn't be surprised if that Reddit post is true

wheresmymojo · 24/02/2020 12:06

Erm....what?

Apparently a spokesperson from WHO has just decided they don't use the word 'pandemic' anymore.

Even though all of their own literature talks about six phases and criteria that lead to the announcement of a pandemic.

If this is true then TBH they are clearly terrified of the potential economic consequences IMO

I saw that wheresmymojo. I read that they were moaned at after H1N1 from countries who struggled to implement the things required once a pandemic is called.

AmelieTaylor · 24/02/2020 12:17

@ofwarren 🌷. That’s absolutely fabulous. She’s a complete star - can we clone her?

That must be a HUGE relief.

My EX PIL put me off hand soap as theirs was always minging. Dry cracked and dirty 🤮🦠. & I don’t like sharing bar soap, so communal areas have antibacterial pump soap, but my bathroom has bar soap. I regularly wipe the soap dispenser with bleach & change the hand towels at least once a day. I’ve put paper hand towels in the bathroom at work and am constantly reminding about hand washing and I’m wiping the toilet flush and taps with bleach.

Roasted chickpeas are lovely too.

@RhubarbTea

and I suspect that’s on the conservative side as I expect many will be stated as CoD ‘pneumonia’ and other things.

I wonder if things will change now after the election?

echobench · 24/02/2020 12:18

Interesting re bar soap, thanks all. I do use Ecover refills rather than buy new ones each time but it still adds up to plenty of plastic. Funny how things go round...

Yes I should listen to John Campbell before commenting. Fair point.

wheresmymojo · 24/02/2020 12:20

I would find the whole thing more convincing if they had mentioned before today, when it clearly became a pandemic, that they don't use the word pandemic anymore.

From the article it seems to be that pharma companies were unhappy that they rushed to create a vaccine for H1N1 (swine flu) that turned out not to be as bad as they thought.

OP posts:
wheresmymojo · 24/02/2020 12:23

BTW I went to the supermarket this morning and it was busy but everything was available.

Seems to be very patchy. There's probably a good psychological experiment to do about this.

If everyone in the local area is chill and just takes what they need = everyone else stays chill.

It probably just takes one or two people to go in and panic buy with wild eyed stares for other people to look at them and think 'oh shit, everything is going to be cleared out by these mad people' and then they join the mad people.

OP posts:
AmelieTaylor · 24/02/2020 12:24

@wheresmymojo. Did they say what they were going to call this, if not a Pandemic?

I understand them being wary, but JC a lot of places won’t take action UNTIL WHO call it a pandemic. There has to be a balance there surely 🤷🏻‍♀️

wheresmymojo · 24/02/2020 12:26

I think they already call it a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC) and that's what they will continue to call it.

OP posts:
bellinisurge · 24/02/2020 12:31

Just popping in to remind everyone again about hand cream - hand washing takes it out on your hands and you can get cracked skin. Which is uncomfortable at best. Your hands are an important tool.
Also, if you have a bottle of surgical spirit in your first aid (it's dead cheap), don't forget to use it to wipe down your phone.

AvocadoOwl · 24/02/2020 12:32

Given that generally speaking announcement of a pandemic goes hand in hand with the relaxing of restrictions and containment efforts I wonder if the WHO are reluctant to make it official for fear of people giving up on stricter measures (when in fact they are still vital to slow the spread).
