Oh yay, fabby news Alba, you must have been sooooo relieved to get that news.

WestYorkshireGirl good on you for booking the scan, you've just got to do what you need to do to get through. This is such a mental battle, you need a full armoury to survive and if that includes scans then so be it.
I had quite big shift in eyesigh*t with my last pregnancy but it didn't kick in til a bit later so I'm trying to dash off and get things done now before I notice a change. I wear contact lenses as well as specs (not at the same time), and found my eyes got dryer as well (I suspect all moisture was being diverted to the bump and nether regions )

Boodleboot - Oddly, I didn't have a fantastic birth experience at QE, but I sort of don't blame the hospital, I suspect that my experience probably would have been a bit shit no matter where I was, a mix of me being who I am and my labour doing what it did and DS being 9lb 11 etc etc. It wasn't a disaster, by any stretch, I just wished I'd been more assertive and asked for a different midwife when I realised I didn't feel supported by the one I had. I reckon if I'd done that a whole chain of other things might have gone better. So this time, if I get that far, I'll be getting a doula to help me.
I can tell you this - I got the pool that I asked for, the midwives read my birth plan and talked to me about it at each stage, when I asked for an epidural I got it, efficiently and it worked like it was supposed to, and when at the end of 30 hrs I talked through my options with a consultant and decided to go for a c-section, it was my choice, they didn't rush me, and the surgery was quick, without complications and I healed without any trouble. Midwives were totally supportive of my wish to breastfeed and helped me to latch on in recovery room. All these are positive things. I guess it's a standard, but new, modern, baby-friendly NHS hospital. I'm going back there so obviously not too traumatic for me .

Dinner's here. Fish 'n' chips for me tonight, yum yum.

LadyBee · 25/06/2010 21:08

toomuchteaching what a pain! That must have been so frustrating. I think I've lowered my expectations so much when it comes to appointments that I never expect to get much change out of a day, but fortunately my work can be quite flexible - doesn't sound like yours can at all.

AlbaDeTamble · 25/06/2010 21:36

Goodness me, it's been busy here today!

Big squeeze back for Jollster, I read back on my posts for those very early days -- I was petrified... hang in there, it will get better (with bouts of hugely scary scan nerves, tooth grinding, sleeplessness, but some lovely joyous moments!)

WYG low risk is from the checks for possible Trisomies (Down's being the main one, but other rarer, and mostly fatal, abnormalities). They check the thickness of nuchal translucency (fluid at the back of the baby's neck) which is a marker of these, and also fetal heartbeat, nasal bone present/absent and the levels of two hormones in your blood. Combined with the background risk for your age they then give you the odds of the baby having these. I'm getting on a bit, and based on my age alone, risk was 1 in 70. Thankfully based on all the markers my risk for down's now 1 in 1391, and for the other trisomies way way lower. Hugely relieved as I didn't want invasive tests due to risk of miscarriage (for obvious reasons)... and the hideous thought of having to make decisions on whether to keep a baby -- beyond awful to even think about and the most hideous decision to ever have to make I think.

I started to feel way better when the lovely sonographer smiled reassuringly before she even started and told me not to worry, she'd seen my blood results already and then checked the nuchal thickness within a minute and smiled even more and said it was looking good, and would we like her to make a DVD of the scan... I'm so glad we decided on the private scan, they have been absolutely fantastic there (had first scan at 8+3 then another at 10+3 when they took the blood tests in advance of today's scan). I've been a bag of nerves every time and I don't think I could have sat through the hideously long NHS waits.

TMT I had a similar experience with first midwife visit with DS I switched surgeries and saw someone else (though slightly helped by nepotism, my uncle was at the time a GP only 10 mins drive from us, so slotted me in with their lovely midwife) however, I have since heard that if you're not happy with your midwife you are perfectly at liberty to change -- see if you can find a surgery with a midwife who is a little less part time maybe? It does make a huge difference, I think, not to be kept waiting overly long, and to feel confident with your midwife.

I can't namecheck all tonight, sorry, exhausted (didn't sleep last night) - but extremely happy -- thanks all for lovely encouraging posts

Very best of luck for everyone with scans next week, and happy weekends to all

Gi1da · 26/06/2010 13:39

Jolls I'm SO excited for you

Muser huge congrats on the BFP too!

WYorks welcome welcome

Sorry v brief post as am currently going slightly insane as my combined results were not as good as Alba's or a lady on the Dec thread who then had a CVS (her result was in 1:1200s but nuchal higher than mine).

My results came back as low risk, but only 1:800. Which I know sounds great at 38 (39 at edd) but somehow I have now got my knickers firmly in an illogical hormonal twist. They also seem to have got my weight wrong, it says 100kgs on the form but am 68kgs.

I KNOW I KNOW 1:800 is really good but please somebody slap me with that haddock?

PS - Cornwall was fabulous, had a super time. Lots to read up on here, so catch y'all laters when I have stopped FREAKING OUT! x

AlbaDeTamble · 26/06/2010 14:13

Oh Gilda, sorry for freaking you out... Try looking at your odds this way: 99.9% chance that your baby doesn't have down's. That sounds pretty good to me. In fact mine is exactly the same... Difference in terms of percent chance all ok has to go to 2 decimal places to be any different between us!

Also be wary of comparisons... Mine was private and included latest nasal bone marker, which NHS doesn't include in combined tests around here, so we don't have exactly the same tests to compare. Nasal bone present most likely improved my stats... FWIW, we discussed what stats we'd be happy with before going in and agreed 300:1... I'd have been very happy with 800:1... Once it's low risk the numbers, for me, are somewhat academic.

I think the lady on the dec thread was concerned about high nuchal thickness... All other markers were v good and gave her the v low risk she had and it was the NT number that led her to decide on CVS. I think yours was nice and thin, wasn't it?

Maybe call them to ask about the mess up on your weight, they should recalculate using the correct numbers and willing to bet your odds will be even better than they've told you. Bit of foot stamping called for if this is worrying you.

But ultimately, sounds like another lovely low risk scan.

Gi1da · 26/06/2010 15:09

Alba thanks lovely . I think I'm just freaking out over nothing. Am going to ignore it and just try to relax. I cried myself silly reading a children's book, The Mousehole Cat, on holiday as old fisherman Tom and Mouzer the cat went out to brave the stormy sea and I felt so terribly anxious for them! Blaming it on the hormones....

toomuchteaching · 26/06/2010 16:13

Gi1da welcome back! Glad you had a good time. Cornish haddock firmly slapped... 1:800 sounds good, so try not to worry.

Thanks Alba and Ladybee for the loveliness about the midwife. I know in the scheme of things it's hardly a big deal, just a small annoyance, I just needed a moan. I wasted my time, and I just want to get things moving... like the bloods for my nuchal.

So stupidly we went to look at a house today that we can't really afford. Aaaaah... madly doing sums. I think the nesting thing has kicked in!

Enjoy the sunny weekend all!

Congratulations on your scan Alba. You must be so relieved. It should be all plain sailing from now on....

toomuchteaching, that must have been a pain waiting. Your midwife might have had to deal with something urgent, but should have told you. With my last pregnancy I had to wait ages once and the receptionist came and told me that the midwife was on the phone to someone in labour so I didn't mind. I've only seen my once so far, and my toddler had a tantrum in the waiting room which I think got things speeded up!

sparklyrainbow · 26/06/2010 19:57

Quick dart in just to say YAY!!! and hello to Jolls Muser and WYG, WYG private scan at 9 weeks was the best thing I could've done though I'm not sure how we lasted that long before doing it!

Gi1da, odds sound fine to me. Hormones probably don't help though (I can't watch the news at the moment- is it just me?)

Hope people at the top of the list are coping with the heat.

Will be back at some point to catch up a bit more... x

Muser · 27/06/2010 11:41

Just wanted to see how everyone was doing. Today I mostly feel hungover. I'm not obviously, but I have that constant low grade queasy feeling of a hangover. Probably because last night I was worrying about not having symptoms. I feel better for a bit of symptom.

Just have to get through next week until the 6 week scan and then I can relax a tiny bit. Every twinge I feel makes me panic a bit at the moment, even though I didn't get any pain with my last ectopic.

Gi1da · 27/06/2010 21:37

Hey Muse glad to hear you're feeling crap! The early days seem to take forever but at least there's gorgeous summer weather for distraction. Shame about the Pimms duff-draught though!

Salute to BunnyBaby my Christmas date buddy! Just noticed you on the list (still haven't quite caught up on the last week). My bad.

Hope everyone's good today and that our topofthelist ladies managed ok in the heat.

becky78 · 28/06/2010 09:51

Hi ladies, I've not been on for ages but have got a couple of minutes as my new baby boy is sleeping on my chest! He is called Thomas Christopher and was born on 22nd may weighing 9lb 1oz. It was a long labour and needed a bit of help with the ventouse but we got there in the end. He is gorgeous and we are totally love him.

So glad to see how long the list has grown and especially how many of you have come across from the m/c thread. Best of luck to all of you and I hope you all end up with the little bundles of joy you deserve after such rocky roads to get there xx

Ah becky that is wonderful news - thanks for coming back to share it with us!! Isn't it amazing how the list has grown....slightly terrified now i am on kept off the top of the list by my lovely buffer meita....eek.

I am ok but very very very very hot. If i were a cake i would be a hot cross bun...

saw midwife at church yest and she had a little feel of my tum for me and has said that i should be prepared for a caesarian if the scan shows that the fibroid has grown much on friday....that put a bit of a bummer on things for me TBH as bizarrely i am quite looking forward to the unpredictability of going into labour and all the excitement that goes with it...but lets not look on the gloomy side just yet...i am praying that the fibroid hasn't grown AT ALL and it is the baby is big and bouncy and taking my bump over the normal measurements!

cannot wait for next week as will be 30 wks then and will really feel on the home stretch....

glad there are so many of you girls on here now....hope you are finding it as supportive as i did when struggling through those early weeks when you are just terrified the dream will be snatched away again....i think this thead is much less scary than those big buses!

Meita · 28/06/2010 11:19

Hi becky great to hear from you! Huge congratulations for your lovely little boy. So glad you dropped in to let us know how it went - I was starting to be a bit worried! But then, I suppose you had more important things to do, such as getting to know your new family member!

Muser GPs can be useless... glad you managed to get your scan sorted without his/her help. Hope it all goes well on the 5th! Glad to hear you're feeling unwell

TMT sorry to hear about your MW-appointment troubles. With mine, I've started to understand that 30 minutes wait is the minimum, unless I book the first appointment of the day, when the wait is only 10 minutes or so. At my surgery, they book each pregnant lady for 15 minutes - never mind that booking-in appointments are meant to last a whole hour. So it's clearly no surprise that they are always running late!
So what are you going to do about that house you can't really afford?

Gi1da those scans and tests do sometimes cause more worry than anything else, don't they! I remember being totally panicked a bit worried about mine, too. The nuchal fold was a bit thicker than average, and being who we are, DP and I spent a night looking up scientific papers and all, and worrying. The results came back as "low risk" from the hospital after they had factored in the blood test, but they never said how low exactly. Still, "low" means less than 1%, and I personally had planned not to be worried unless it was higher than 1 in 50 or even 1 in 20. I mean, 1 in 20 still means 19 in 20 that everything is all right.
And even a great low risk result doesn't give you any guarantees.
Anyway, I hope you've calmed down a bit by now... Being pregnant can be such a stressful time!

Thanks everyone for wishing us top-of-the-list folk well regarding the heat! I do feel a bit cheated... Usually I love proper hot summers and have missed them the last few years since I moved to England. Now... well. I feel a bit trapped inside. Pity!

Meita · 28/06/2010 11:35

waves to boodle - remember, there is always apples who is really at the top of the list, although she isn't on the list, iyswim. I think she's due sometime end of July. I wonder how she's doing?
I do hope your fibroid thing sorts itself out!
Ah, and a here's an idea: Fresh cucumbers. Eat half a cucumber at a time, it's very refreshing, and it helps tremendously against those swollen ankles! (Make sure there's a loo nearby before eating said cucumber)

We received a bag each of newborn clothes and of 2-4 months clothes from a friend, which we spent some of the weekend washing. Then we cleared out some never-worn clothes from our cupboards to make space for all the baby clothes. Also, FooL (DPs father) made us a custom-made bedside crib and an also custom-made changing table which goes over the bath but can also be folded and stored away (when bath in use for other things, such as, umm, bathing). we have a pack of newborn nappies and this week we are going to order a car seat and a cloth nappy trial pack. This morning a lady from the council came by for a "site survey" and within two weeks or so we should know if our planning application (to extend in order to have space for a nursery/child's bedroom) goes through or not.I think we are starting to be a bit prepared!

Redheadgal · 28/06/2010 13:16

Meita - you sound amazingly well organised! I'm so impressed. Good luck with your planning app.

Becky - lovely hear from one who really has 'graduated'. Brings hope to us all.

Boodle - keeping my fingers crossed that the scan goes well on Friday.

Muser - hang in there. The first few weeks are so tough. Really hope the early scan will reassure you.

Boo to ToomuchT's midwife and all the other crap-too-busy-for-words midwives out there.

It's all go here at RH HQ. We got notice that the proposal to change the sweet shop from commercial to residential use has gone through so we can finally go ahead with the mortgage application. Our architect also got back to us with some plans for the conversion which is very exciting! And the loft conversion is possible, but like Meita it's just the planning permission we need now.

And I've nearly finished my article on medieval childbirth. Apparently it was fairly common in the Middle Ages to borrow (from the local monastery) the belt of a saint. These were supposed to make childbirth a bit easier. There were other belts which were supposed to stop you miscarrying. Don't know about anyone else, but reckon it could be a good investment. We could have a couple of thread belts which we could loan out between ourselves. I'll look on Ebay

All this good news is thankfully taking my mind off my 12 (+5) week scan on Friday. Just checked the list and there's a lot of scans booked for this week. Fingers crossed for all. xxx

clareanna · 28/06/2010 19:09

muser glad to hear you're feeling a bit sick- good sign!

rhg fab news on the planning permission and nearly finishing the article- you've been through a lot whilst researching that haven't you?

meita wow, sudden burst of brilliant efficiency!!!

becky congratulations on your safe arrival- lovely to hear.

gi1da GOOD NEWS on your scan- hope you are not still worried?

More nice news on the other thread over the weekend too!

I'm fine- so far mild symptoms which aren't affecting my working life too much thank god. Completely different to the pg I lost, by this stage I couldn't open the fridge without throwing up- weird.

LadyBee · 28/06/2010 20:47

Oh Clareanna you have no idea how happy I am to hear that you have mild symptoms.
I am almost completely symptomless and it's driving me crazy.
Here are my symptoms at 6 and bit weeks:

  1. Itchy nipples
  2. Sometimes my boobs feel a bit sore when I take my bra off in the evening.
  3. I'm peeing quite a lot, but it's hot, so I'm drinking quite a lot.

Hi All

ladybee I know where you are going with symptoms. I do feel mine come and go and the only consistent one this time has been utter tiredness - nearly nodding off now in fact! I keep trying to think back to before, but all becomes a bit meaningless in the end.

On a downside, couldn't get into any normal/tailored work trousers today so had to wear linen trousers and birks to work . Think I pulled it off in terms of smartness, but am going to have to go shopping at the weekend - have already booked a bra fitting as only 1 is now comfy and DH is convinced there has been considerable growth! !

Red good news all round for you today and good luck for Fri.

Sparkly Thanks for reassurance about scan. Will let you know how the scan goes tomorrow - am very intrigued to see what's different about a private one. They do all the other tests and offer packages going up to £1k, but we have decided to only have scans so I think that is wise looking at the cost!

Meita hello - it's lovely to hear about your preparations and what a great FIL making you things!

Boodle sorry to hear you are worried about possible c-section. I hope things do work out for you.

LadyBee · 28/06/2010 22:09

boodleboot well I guess it's good to start adjusting to the idea in advance, even if it doesn't turn out to be an Elective c-section, if the fibroid turns out to have some unknown impact on progress, it's better to at least have explored what it would mean in advance.
Fingers crossed you do get the labour you want though , I say hope for the best, plan for the rest.

BTW, this thread might seem big, but I checked out the Feb 2010 thread and it has nearly 90 people on it!!!! What's going on?

becky congratulations! Lovely to see someone make it through to the other side. I'm so looking forward to seeing more people on this list come back with similar news.

Meita the bath-top changer sounds brilliant, what a good idea! That was something I always found a bit of a challenge, using reusable nappies, the logistics of dealing with a dirty nappy while DS was being changed in his room (we have cot-top changer, and it is such a back saver.
My dad made our cot-top changer and DH made our bedside crib .

RedHeadGal that's so exciting! And can I be in queue to book out an anti-MC belt? (I'm picturing it a bit like this) Good luck for Friday, I'm scanning then too so will be thinking of you.

boodleboot - if you have any questions about elective sections let me know - I had to have one with DD and was distraught at the idea. In practice it was a lovely experience.

Glad to hear that everyone is pootling along nicely.

I had a I went for my scan this morning - there is only one in there (phew) and it's little heart is beating away. We've told DD as she has been getting concerned about me feeling sick and tired all the time. I just hope everything goes okay now, although we have explained to her that seeds don't always grow - just like the seed she planted, which is sitting on the kitchen windowsill refusing to grow.

DH will tell SIL soon - I'm worried about her as she has unexplained secondary infertility and it'll be hard for her.

LilRedWG · 29/06/2010 10:29

DD is four btw - does everyone think we handled it right?

BunnyBaby · 29/06/2010 11:00

Rhg congratulations on finishing your paper, I remember you talking about it on the other thread. I'm naturally no waisted pre-pg so would like a flattering belt that sits on his more.

becky congratulations on your lovely bundle!

gilda hello due date buddy! I'm betting you'll beat me easily as DS1 a whopping 17 days late! ha ha!

Panicked this morning as DS1's crucifix had fallen off the wall, being a catholic we're a superstitious lot. Anyhows, feelin poo post brekky so know all is well with Baby Bubbles, morning sickness finishes at 12 weeks?! Not for me, I'm heading towards 15, but all good as abruptly stopped last time.

Anyone ekse got chronic heartburn? I can't eat after 8pm and bending over evensets it off.

Though on a good note, constipation better now uterus moved up a bit out of pelvis! Sorry if TMI too early
